San Felipe Del Progreso

San Felipe del Progreso is a Mexican municipality which is located to the northwest of the Sate of Mexico. It is approximately in the 19 degrees 43 minutes north latitude. In the north of the town we can find some municipalities from Michoacan State like Tlalpujahua, which is an important region in Mexico. The town has an extension of 856.05 km2 the people who lives here are called “Sanfelipenses”.[1]


In 1552 was founded the zone called “San Felipe el Grande” by the conquerors. During 1810 the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla went to the town known as “San Felipe del Obraje”. On January 1, 1826, San Felipe del Obraje was declared a municipality and on October 13, 1877, the village was called San Felipe del Progreso.

The earliest records of population in the area are from the seventh century, when it was inhabited by the Mazahuas, which were constantly besieged by near towns. Some of those towns were the Tarascos and the Mexicas which were conquered by the Tlatoani Mexica called Acamapichtli and Tezozómoc. The area came under the control Mexica until the Spanish Conquest.

San Felipe has important people like Manuel Gomez Marin, Antonio Campos y Moreno, Manuel Posadas y Garduño, Fernando Orozco y Berra, etc. They are just some examples of the most well known people from this town. All of them have contributed in one way to this town.

The predominant weather is the mild with rains on the summer. The annual temperature changes between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius, however there are minimum temperatures of 2 degrees and maximum of 28 degrees. The rains are abundant on July, August and on September. On February and March there are winds, while on December, January, and on February as well as on March there are some frosts. On April and on May the temperature is warm, everything is moderate..[2]


The town has natural resources. As yesteryear, it is so important the forest wealth and excessive logging. They have established a big number of sawmills with licenses to cut wood. There is a deposit of tezontle which is administered by the government of San Felipe. There are quarry deposits that have not been exploited, like sandbars, tepojal, etc.

The predominant religion is the Catholic with 90 percent of the communities. There are some exceptions like San Agustin Mextepec and Mayorazgo.

There are 50 high schools in the territory which have 4858 students. There are four high schools or preparatory schools which have 1014 students. There are only one level with specialization in primary education and 165 students. The 26.41% of the population over 15 years are illiterate.

Agriculture has been the primary activity of San Felipe. It is grown mainly corn, potato, zacaton, beans, tomatoes, squash, wheat, oats, and cebada. The other important economical activity is the livestock. There are a number of producers of cattle, sheep, horses, poultry and rabbits. The last two producers produce only domestically. The other producers produce in corrals and grazing in herds that are cared by shepherds.

The tourism is another economical activity. The ceremonial center Mazahua is located between Santa Ana Nichi-Fresno and “Nichi-San Antonio de las Huertas”. It is visited regularly, but especially on the first Sunday of each month. The ancient ethnic Mazahua conducts its rituals and practicing their customs, attracting local tourism, national and international. There is a tourist centre with playground equipment, 96 white-tailed deer, 35 guanacos of the Andes and other interesting animals. There are also a heliport, a museum, a craft center, board rooms, auditorium outdoors, craft workshops and roadways with beautiful flowers and plants among a forest of pines and oyameles.[3]


Nowadays, San Felipe del Progress has a population of 100,201 inhabitants. There are 48 percent of men and 52 percent or women. The population who speak a native language is of 24,723. And its governor is Eduardo Zarzosa Sanchez..[4]
