Razia Sulthana

Please provide with primary sources that mention that Razia Sultana was killed by Hindus. ShivaChatrapati (talk) 19:03, 28 April 2021 (UTC).

The article cites a secondary source (K. A. Nizami), which cites Minhaj-i-Siraj. Have a look at WP:PRIMARYSOURCES. utcursch | talk 00:57, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Content moderation.

I saw you have undone my editing in the article of Alauddin Khilji. You should have noticed that I had cited 4 reliable sources with my edit. The same sources have been cited in many other articles too. Also providing the theme characteristics and information in the beginning of the article gives a clear picture to the reader while following/reading the article. I hope you would restored my edit. Thanks. Friendly Batman (talk) 20:27, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

@Friendly Batman: As mentioned in my edit summary, the lead is a summary of the content sourced in the article body: see WP:CITELEAD. Alauddin's treatment of Hindus is already discussed in the lead a few sentences later. utcursch | talk 14:23, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

The current lead of the article is insignificant part of the history and was not even major (or sub major) theme of the rule of Alauddin. That is why I edited the article to provide the legit information theme in the beginning which can be discussed in the article body. I say this as an academic and history graduate. I request you again to restore my edit and make this platform a source of information and knowledge. Thanks. Friendly Batman (talk) 17:27, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

You can propose your changes on the talk page. If you are indeed a "history graduate" as you claim, you would know that any decent scholarly book that cover's Alauddin's reign discusses in detail his reforms, which you removed. The bits that you added (assassination of his predecessor and attitude towards Hindus) are already present in the lead, a few sentences later. utcursch | talk 19:27, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Regarding CHAHAMANAS OF SHAKAMBARI

Good morning Mr utcursh , I'm ABHAYRAJ SINGH CHAUHAN 42nd descendant of samrata Prithviraj Chauhan, yesterday I edited the list of rulers in the page CHAHAMANAS OF SHAKAMBARI ). Which has been removed today , i have written record of list of rulers because I belong to their family, I request to kindly edit it again. If you want proof you can contact me on my WhatsApp No +917976343991. Potusa1 (talk) 11:08, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

I doubt that you are the 42nd descendant of Prithviraj Chauhan: there are thousands of Indians who claim descent from famous kings, and nearly all of these clams are bogus. Even if your claim was true, you should not be making these edits per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Have a look at WP:V and WP:RS. utcursch | talk 14:50, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Content Removal

I have just seen that you have added the Cynthia tablot reference again to the Rajput Dynasties page, I have already shown you the evidence and that annotation of Rajbut to Rajput is accepted by all historians, just because you think it isn't trustworthy it doesn't make it so. Same view is given by Historian Yogendra Mishra as well. Are you a greater historian than them? Bhojpal1234 (talk) 06:39, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

Take it to talk page per WP:BRD. The source that you've cited just includes an excerpt from Henry Miers Elliot's The History of India, where equivalence of "Rahbut" to "Rajput" is marked as uncertain with a question mark. The author doesn't comment on the accuracy of this identification. "Kandahar is called the country of the Rajput"? Really? utcursch | talk 14:53, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

I have recently seen that you are constantly reverting my edits though I provided reference links with the edits I made, the reference link was of esteemed historian CV Vaidya, while you are providing me a link of Cynthia Talbot, who is a foreign author and have visited India only once.

I also showed you that she was wrong about presence of Rajput Identity, before 12th century, to which you said that the meaning is not clear, maybe the meaning is not clear to you but all the historians like CV Vaidya and Yogendra Mishra have taken that as Rajput only. That's not my personal commentary.

I hope you will try to understand historians view on the matter and won't include your personal biases on such matters.

Already explained above. CV Vaidya hasn't commented on the accuracy of the identification - his book merely reproduces a translation. "Foreign author" is not a reason to mark a source unreliable. utcursch | talk 01:57, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Minor fixes to userscripts

Hey Utcursch, are User:Utcursch/Migrate Infobox Indian Jurisdiction to Infobox settlement/main.js and User:Utcursch/update literacy.js still useful? They both use bare javascript global wg-style variables, which are phab:T72470 deprecated, and while I don't think there's a timeline for their removal, it's been that way for a while. It's usually a straightforward fix, all uses need to use mw.config.get, such as converting wgTitle to mw.config.get('wgTitle'). There's some more info at mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Global wg variables. I can clean them up if you like, but maybe they can be blanked? ~ Amory (utc) 02:52, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

@Amorymeltzer: Thanks for the heads up. These scripts are obsolete -- I've blanked the pages. utcursch | talk 04:02, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Regarding Spamming, Vandalism and removal of sourced content

Hi Utkarshraj,

I would like to bring your attention to a massive vandalism, discriminatory behaviour and removal of detailed sourced content from a community page : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khandayat_(caste)

This page is being vandalised by few users, most ones are by named as P. Sitansu and 100to100. (As per the edits history)

This article is regarding a huge diverse community discussing it's history, different categories and present status, while these users are trying to remove the detailed article and putting a small casteist definitions, which is highly discriminatory, and further resorting spamming and vandalising the article.

I would like to know your thoughts in this regard and wondering is it possible for you to intervene and execute your administive rights against this on-going vandalism, possibly issuing a warning or temporary locking the page from reverting of original detailed edits that I just made.

Feel free to share If I'm required to provide any further information in this regard.

Thanking you Sangramz (talk) 17:55, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

@Sangramz: This is more of a content dispute than vandalism. Much of the content that you reinstated has issues - it cites dead links, books without page numbers, and includes stuff that is outright fake (e.g. an image of Hannibal being presented as that of a Khandayat general). This discussion belongs on the talk page of the article: see Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. utcursch | talk 18:07, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Totally agree. I too have found some issues. I will be coming up with the proper and updated sources ASAP. Sangramz (talk) 18:10, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Sources I take for maps

Hi, I take all the information from many books on History on Google books and JSTOR with great effort, and merge the information together and try to create as accurate maps as I can. This is because like Thomas Lessman, I felt the need for more accurate historic maps. (PS. I am just an 11-year old kid, who has a lot of knowledge on ancient Indian history. I just want Wikipedia to have more good and extensive material on Indian history, especially on the obscure Abhira dynasty, which was created by me. IM HONEST, NO KIDDING HERE) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tulika and Satvik (talkcontribs)

@Tulika and Satvik: If you've reliable sources for the map boundaries, then you should cite those sources on the image file pages / articles. Many of Thomas Lessman's maps aren't particularly accurate either. There is a reason history books don't have maps for certain kingdoms ~~ there isn't enough information available to determine the boundaries of these kingdoms with a fair degree of certainty. Maps drawn with assumptions may actually end up misleading the readers. utcursch | talk 05:17, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

I had actually added a source that includes indigenous people also being genocided [5] and could have more, but it seems most have more fun to remove information that are easily citable claiming them unsourced rather than giving a little effort to find and add them? Well this is what Wikipedia has always been reputed for and i will leave it to those in charge to keep it that way without touching that article again. Thank you for the brilliant removal. I wonder if all the other entries there explicitly calls them indigenous, but its a case of "selective improvement" rather than "overall improvement" despite this info also having numerous citable sources that were probably not used by those who originally added this section and as i said, i had added one and was going to add more but its all yours to use your powers to edit the article as you see fit. Thank you and good day honorable Administrator, cheers. Dilbaggg (talk) 14:00, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

@Dilbaggg: Your source doesn't describe the event as a "genocide of the indigenous people". It includes exactly one statement that mentions the word "indigenous": "the liberation war was fought mostly by civilians – men and women, Muslims, Hindus and non-Bengali Indigenous people." This sentence cannot be used to assert that the event was a genocide of indigenous people, just as it cannot be used to assert that it was a "genocide of men", a "genocide of women", or a "genocide of Muslims".
Contesting the removal of content on the basis that it was "easily citable" or that the remover should have made the effort to find sources isn't a valid argument: see WP:BURDEN.
WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS isn't a great argument either - if the other entries don't belong in that article, they should be removed as well.
Feel free to re-add the section with sources that call the event a genocide of indigenous peoples in Bangladesh, and please limit the content to bits that talk about indigenous people.
If you want to discuss this further, please do so on the article's talk page, so that other editors can contribute tot he discussion. utcursch | talk 19:17, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Harpal Singh stray refs

Hello,
G'Day,
Wrt: [stray refs -- what content do these refs support?]

My Reply: "The references support the data I inserted into the infobox"

I am a bit confused as to how to provide references for data within InfoBoxes. Maybe I should 'cite' them in the Infobox itself ?. OR is there some other place where I can insert these references?

Thank you for your time and consideration, SierraTangoCharlie1 (talk) 08:47, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

@SierraTangoCharlie1: You can insert the refs after each row in infobox parameter, or use the footnotes parameter. I've re-inserted the refs (minus an unreliable one) in front of the footnotes parameter. utcursch | talk 19:14, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Understood. Thank you. But I can 'cite' these references? In the future? Instead of referencing in footnotes? SierraTangoCharlie1 (talk) 05:18, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, you can cite them immediately after the content they support. utcursch | talk 23:41, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
Notice

The article Ahluwalia (caste) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Ahluwalia is not the name of a caste. As stated in the article itself, Ahluwalia is a surname used by the people belonging to the Kalal caste. There already exist articles like Ahluwalia and Kalal. So, the existence of this article is often confusing for the readers.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Regarding the Udasin

Hello sir I see that you are an admin and have often edited the current Udasi page as well. Regarding my most recent edit i would like to point out some things regarding the removed part. I dont know to do the quick links like you as I'm m not versed in html or coding so ill do it the old way. You asked me to refer to the wiki code of reliable sources and ill quote from it

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources

"Wikipedia requires inline citations for any material challenged or likely to be challenged, and for all quotations. If you are new to editing and instead just need a general overview of how sources work, please visit the referencing for beginners help page."

as for the citations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Inline_citations

"The inline citation may be a superscript footnote number, or an abbreviated version of the citation called a short citation. The second necessary part of the citation or reference is the list of full references, which provides complete, formatted detail about the source, so that anyone reading the article can find it and verify it"

The text in question is

"Another Sikh tradition links the Udasis to Baba Gurditta, the eldest son of Guru Hargobind, and there is dispute on whether the Udasis originated with Sri Chand or Gurditta.[5]"

The citation for this information link is/link address is

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Udasi&oldid=1025537571#CITEREFOberoi1994

That is my reason for removing the information in the article, as it does not fall in line with the citation guidelines as mentions above.

I would also petition you directly to change the whole artical name from Udasi to Udasin according to the Indian script naming guidelines as described here under modern names and terms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/India-related_articles#Indic_scripts_in_leads_and_infoboxes

For links related to the modern name Udasin I will include links, both from newspapers from India as well as judgements made in publicly available court cases.

@Utcursch: I see the link here and can click it but I dont understand why on the Udasin page when I pull it up the link is not working like that. I get a non-useable link when I pull up the page. very strange

I would also like to note that the book simply says historians debate it, without any reference to said debate. In looking for even a single references/reliable sources to said statement, I can't find a single one. However I can find 20 + reliable sources that point towards Sri Chand being the founder. As per the book publishers own words

Frequent Vandalism of WP:Jeypore

Hello User:Utcursh, can you please check the Wikipedia page of Jeypore, two editors have been frequently vandalising the page in bad faith by reverting the sourced content with their own perception. Every time they alter the content, they give a misguiding review that they are relating it to the source, which is not true. These users are User:Solarson919 & User:Sangramz. I have reverted their vandalism a couple of times, but now it’s too much. They have been altering it again and again. Please have a look when free. Regards. For your information, firstly that is a government website source so pretty much reliable (check Wikipedia policy on sources) and secondly I did not add that source, it was already there and how many sources did you add ? Which mentions it as a small tribal kingdom, Do you have any ? Odiahistory (talk) 06:33, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

@Odiahistory: Government websites aren't automatically reliable sources. Do you really think that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's website is a reliable source? Or the West Bengal's government for the history of Rasgulla? Or for Wikipedia to use either West Bengal or Odisha as the definitive source for the Jayadeva birth controversy? Missing cites in India-related articles

The article cites several short references without a corresponding source listed in the bibliography. Can you please add? Also, strongly suggest installing a script to highlight such errors in the future. All you need to do is copy and paste importScript('User:Svick/HarvErrors.js'); // Backlink: [[User:Svick/HarvErrors.js]] to your common.js page.

    • "Satish Chandra 2014" - or is that a typo in year?
    • "Richard M. Eaton 2001" - does not appear to be a typo in year based on page numbers
  • Delhi Sultanate
    • "Ludden 2002"
    • "Satish Chandra 2014" - or is that a typo in year?
    • "Pacey 2000"
    • " Habib 2011" - or is this supposed be Economic History of Medieval India (ref number 164)?

Thanks, Renata3 01:19, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, some of these are not result of my edits, but I've fixed them anyway. Not sure about the last two refs for Delhi Sultanate. utcursch | talk 16:26, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Can you rollback the edits on Rantasimha page to my edit because some bad edits have been made.

There have been some rather useless edits made on the Ratnasimha page by some editors where they change names of Kings to suite a more local spelling. ex -> "Ratnasimha" - "Ratan Singh" , "Guhila" - "Gahlot". Also they have changed link names which have made them useless. Can you please review these changes and if you agree with me , can you please Rollback to me edit on 13:12, 13 January 2022‎ for me as I don't think I have access to that feature and also take appropriate action against the editor if any required. Also I would like to know how can I get that feature on certain pages where I have made significant contributions. Thankyou.

Amruteshwar Temple

Thank you for taking the time to thank me for editing the article. Apart from a very light copy edit, I wikilinked a number of unfamiliar words, reasoning that I was probably not the only one that needed to look them up. I was however unable to identify “antaral” and “kichak hastas”, beyond surmising from context that these are architectural details. Possibly you can help with those? If they don’t have articles at en.wikipedia, possibly in another language? If not it’s all good, thanks for your time Elinruby (talk) 04:55, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

@Elinruby: I linked antarala ("antaral" is a modern spelling with schwa deletion), but I'm not sure what "kichak hastas" (literally ""Kichaka hands"?) - I have tagged it with {{clarification needed}}. utcursch | talk 05:07, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

On the article of Siyaka

When I saw your edit 10th June 2022. According to scollars he was a vassal or feudatory of the Rashtrakuta ruler Krishna III in his earlier career. And his son's (Vakpati Munja) inscription of Dhrmapuri copper plate mentions dapakas name as Kaṇhapaika (which is also dapaka of Siyaka in his 969 Ahmedabad copper plate inscription) and in next inscription of 980 Ujjain grant and 981-982 Gaonri copper plates the dapaka's name is mentioned as Rudraditya (which also name of prime minister of Vakpati Munja). That's why I edited article like that on 16 December 2021. Srimant ROSHAN (talk) 05:59, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

@Srimant ROSHAN: The source doesn't suggest that "dapaka" means "prime minister". The meaning of the term is not certain, but various scholars associate it with a role specific to the inscritpion (e.g. donor or drafter of the inscription). It definitely doesn't mean "prime minister". Also, there is no historical evidence that "Rudraditya" was the name of Vakpati's prime minister -- that claim appears in the writings of Merutunga, whos is an extremely unreliable source: his accounts are little more than stories. utcursch | talk 09:48, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Ok, but what about vassal or feudatory of the Rashtrakuta ruler Krishna III. Srimant ROSHAN (talk) 15:04, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

As mentioned in my edit summary, "Vessel of Rashtrakuta" is not an office. Also, the period is unsourced. utcursch | talk 07:30, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

I appreciated your catching the error on the location of the ancient art, which I labeled File:Bhimbetka cave, harper.jpg.

I try to get very specific with locations and time periods when I add historical artwork, and ferreting out that information can be challenging. The non-specificity of captions with artwork has made it difficult to put time and place to many useful images. In the case of India, I feel that its online history suffers.

Thanks for the Thanks. Also, I notice you've just created Vasudeva-hindi, so thanks for that, too. Odissi Music Wiki page

Sir, kindly please correct some lines of this article. I added "citation needed " tag. But some editors removed my tags without any reason. Kjhll (talk) 11:42, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

@Kjhll: The content is already cited: the citations are present at the end of the paragraphs - they should not be added after each word or sentence per WP:REPCITE. If you find that a particular portion of the paragraph is not supported by the reference cited at the end of the paragraph, you can add "{{verification failed}}" at the end of that portion. Also, instead of adding "<ref group="Citation needed ">[[Citation needed]]</ref>", you should simply add "{{citation needed}}" for unsourced material.

Ishan Kishan

I've just requested a temporary page protection on this which might help to calm things down a little. I've got a couple of questions about the page which I think you'll probably know more about than I do:

  • do we call him Kishan or Ishan when referring to him in the prose? I've gone with Kishan, which would be the western standard, and I think that's right with names such as this, but the prose previously had him referred to by both names.
  • is there any agreement about whether or not castes should be discussed in articles like this? It seems much less relevant to my mind, but it's something I see added occasionally to articles about cricketers and wondered if there was any general agreement that you were familiar with? I can't find anything at MOS:INDIA.

Thanks for stepping in on this one. Hopefully things will blow over in a day or so... Blue Square Thing (talk) 18:58, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

@Blue Square Thing: Not sure about the surname -- Kishan seems to be OK. Caste should not be mentioned unless supported by a reliable source per WP:BLP, and it doesn't belong in the lead unless it's an important part of what made the person notable (e.g. for a Dalit leader) per MOS:CONTEXTBIO. To get more opinions, you can initiate a discussion on the article's talk page and drop a note at WT:IND. utcursch | talk 05:32, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
