Next article / Women in Red coverage improvement program

Hi T Wilson, I saw you wrote an article lately on a major female figure in Irish arts, Noelle Campbell-Sharp. Good karma! But the fact that someone so prominent in multiple fields only gets an article in their 70s shows the difficulty in achieving coverage. If you’re not a sportsperson! So I just wanted to say “please keep it up” with a special focus, if it’s not too pushy, on female figures. Maybe some of those painters who took residencies at Cill Rialaig? Or a writer not yet covered, as I see you also did an article on the nearby Anam Cara? I don’t know how many repeat visits occur in this places but between those two alone there must be at least a couple of thousand artists and writers to consider. And a small suggestion, as I see you participated at least once. Could you tag any female articles to the Women in Red article creation drive? Thank you, Sarah777. I am afraid I do not have my own access, and so only get here every 2 or 3 weeks but I do think that this is an interesting and worthwhile idea. It is very good to hear about the Irish Wikipedian area, as I had not come across this. In fact, such features might be better highlighted, although I have to say I tend to take an in-at-the-deep-end rather than read-the-manual-cover-to-cover approach anyway.

I notice that one or two of my edits seem to have generated some discussion, good, though I am wary of one or two conclusions - Dollymount is, e.g. not separate from Clontarf, while I see a sort of consensus on that page has left it as some kind of ambiguous place. Admittedly, though, this is hard in Ireland, where formal boundaries do become blurred, often for property sale reasons, and are confused by pointing to information from bodies, whether private map makers, the Ordnance Survey or An Post, who don't make such decisions. And there are occasional new areas formed, such as Donaghmede, and perhaps Bayside, though the latter does not appear on most OS maps of the last thirty years, just a great big Kilbarrack, all the way to Sutton.

Anyway, such is the nature of team work, and I shall now do some Dublin North browsing and editing for today.

Small note, this: If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit is no longer available, and I can well understand why. I only made two or three edits before signing-up anyway.

Old Map

OS map from 1901

This map is used to give the location of all the following areas:

   * Raheny
   * Artane, Dublin
   * Clontarf, Dublin
   * Bayside, Dublin
   * Kilbarrack
   * Killester
   * Dollymount

Obviously the map describes the situation nearly 110 years ago. Dollymount is now a built-up suburb; as is Killester, which is missing from the map. Artane is spelt differently and most of the map is rural.

It is fine to use an old and outdated map for some historical reference but the current OS maps are the ones to tell what the places are called today?

Also I'm not sure if using the same map repeatedly in so many articles is good practice. Generally speaking, if you are going to make a change that will impact on multiple articles it is best to discuss it first. Each area in an article should be the centre of a map showing where it is. Please see above re. Dollymount, a group of streets in Clontarf. The map in question is what I had to work with but I have asked someone to help with scans for each relevant area, which is indeed a good idea. In terms of accuracy, it does show Killester, and has a clarity about the districts. And OS maps do not set out to show definitive areas, whereas maps up to the early 20th century tended to show the formal Civil Parishes and their sub-units.

In terms of making edits to multiple articles, is there an appropriate place to raise such a question? I am looking at the Irish Wikipedian section you helpfully pointed out in another window, and I am not sure I quite see one.

One small further point would be that OS maps since Independence are, I believe, still in copyright, and so unavailable, as are most modern maps. Luckily, the pre-independence OS maps are out of copyright, as Crown Copyright has expired on them. Now if I just had some to scan.

Taney Parish

Hi Mr Wilson; sorry to hear you not so mobile - but as I said, great work. I live just up the road from Taney and could easily take some photos; any pointers as to what would be best to photograph for the article; the Parish Church I presume, and after that? ps, We have an "Irish solution to an Irish problem" with Dollymount and similar areas; it is categorised now as part of Clontarf and also as a suburb in it's own right. Seems to work so far - there are lots of Dollymount situations across the City. (Sarah777 02:16, 13 July 2007 (UTC))

Thank you, Sarah, and also the fellow contributor who posted the new Church. As the Old Church has its own article, I think the other "targets" from which we might select would be: the parish school (one of the largest Church of Ireland schools) at Sydenham Villas, the site of the old parish facilities at Eglinton Terrace and Old Rectory Park housing development, with the Parish Tennis Club grounds and the proposed site of the nursing home.

I am glad to hear something was done with Dollymount, and I see someone has also acted on the "tween" area of Harmonstown.

Request for help

Mr / Ms Wilson, I see you got a couple of articles going for Ireland this year. I wonder:- would you consider doing something for Irish cycling, where the whole organiser side of the sport, except one famous person, is missing? The history is complex and messy but a set of 10-20 articles, new, or much expanded, would be possible. If yes, I'd be pleased to provide some materials. Photographs could be harder, but as I understand these are not mandatory, at least for Starter articles. Thanks for the compliment. I'm only here occasionally these days, but I think I see what you mean, and I will add it to my to-do list. I have an article on Japanese metalwork to finish, but sure, I cycled back in the Sixties and Seventies and could research at the library, if the old health holds up. I think the article volume on famous riders of the past is "light" overall, and maybe more could be done on women in cycling too. Thanks for recent articles, one small fix

Hello TWilson (hope I'm doing that right, not sure if alternatively there's a surname Twilson I have not met), and great to see you back lately, and with new articles filling in gaps in the encyclopedia. On the latest, it really struck me, especially as I was checking something on Ninette de Valois recently, that I could not name a single male ballet person in Ireland (and only a few females, but at least I know they are there), so well done! One small fix, if you would - the draft of one article is creating a presence in a category, which drafts should not, of course. If you could remove that it would be excellent.
