An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Two edit-a-thons coming up!

Hello there!

I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:

  • This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
  • On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Liberalism

I explained what the purpose of the change was. In more detail I was giving in simple terms what moneytrist and fiscal economics is about. Explaining that parties were arguing about it duing the period and their is't a simple answer. The clause I replaced did not make sense, it is basic secondary school economics that the two schools have always argued about this matter. Please accept the changes or give a valid reason. deleted photo of Judy Goffman Cutler

Hi. You posted that you reverted an image I deleted of Judy Goffman Cutler. The entire entry seems like vanity page to me, with links to mostly self-published sources, and goes into way too much detail for a little known person. I believe there is no need for a photograph since she is not really a public figure. Is there a specific criteria for determining when a picture is considered worthwhile? I didn't know what to refer to, though I probably should have given some reason for my deletion. A good rule of thumb is that if we have an available picture, we should use it. Wikipedia is not paper, therefore adding a picture harms nothing and can potentially add much. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 07:57, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Alan, from your indication that you are the manager of the person whom the page is about - you have admitted to a Conflict of Interest. This is a violation of the Wikipedia COI policy. Further there is an Neutral Point of View Policy that needs to be adhered to as well. Reversion of 'colour' to 'color'.

I am wondering why you reverted my changes. Singapore is a Commonwealth country and the universities whose pages I edited officially use the Commonwealth spellings. The articles themselves also use Commonwealth spellings throughout, such as 'specialised' and 'organised'. I was making the spelling of 'colours' consistent with the rest of the article. As you can see, the Singapore Management University article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Management_University) uses the Commonwealth spelling of 'colours' and I was just making the other university pages consistent as well. I'm just trying to help.

While I was reading up on McDonald's items I noticed on the McNuggets article that where it listed sauces McDonald's has, there were sauces that was discontinued. I tried fixing the mistake but apparently you know more about McDonald's then a McDonald's employee. All I'm saying is that McDonald's no longer has the Sweet Chili sauce and the Chipotle Barbecue sauce. Now before you start calling me a liar I will say yes McDonald's still offers the Sweet Chili and Chipotle Barbecue sauce but only for the chicken snack wraps and premium McWraps. Those sauces are no longer intended for the McNuggets. To go into further detail, when discontinued, Sweet Chili, Chipotle Barbecue, and Hot Mustard were all replaced by the new Habanero Ranch sauce. Washington, DC meetups in June

Viacom Intl Page

HI, I understand your removing the spam comment I put on the Viacom Intl page. However, they refuse my opt out requests. Every few months they send another unsolicited material from one of their media channels. Signing up with them is a source of spam. I believe users should beware of such tactics. NodeWorx/SiteWorx redirect speedy deletion?

Hi, I'm confused by the speedy deletions that you flagged and your notes on my page. Beneath the second, you mentioned "do not simply create the same content again". I believe there may be some confusion. NodeWorx and SiteWorx are two different things. They are commonly confused interfaces to a piece of software, called InterWorx, but not separate software. The exact same thing had been requested on the talk page and enacted for their competitor, cPanel, for the interface WHM; my intent was to use the more-complete article as a model for the incomplete article. Rather than build new pages while I was expanding the stub, it seemed to make sense to consolidate a common article. Can you explain what guideline that you believe this to be in violation of? Please ensure you contest the speedy deletion on the talk pages per the instructions in the tags. The discussion of competitors starts to make this sound like direct advertising... in which case all of these articles should be removed. If there is a discussion that allows the redirects, that is fine... cite those in the discussions on the speedy delete tags. The tags were applied because there were multiple redirects created at the same time and it appeared to be Spam and Advertising. confused from FastEddieB aka Ed Buckner

All, especially (I hope) Trlovejoy,

I'm quite new to Wikipedia as an account holder or editor, though I've used Wikipedia as a resource for many years. I'm not just willing but eager to make articles better for all, not just create self-serving ego-booster material.

I've known there was an article on me for a couple of years or so, but i had nothing to do with posting it or editing it until the last few days. (Material on that page, probably a fair amount of it, originated with me a remove or two back, as people asked me for bio information to help publicize a talk or a debate I was in, or a book or chapter I've written--and I've been in debates or given talks or made news all over the USA and occasionally in the United Kingdom, etc., had several books I've written or contributed chapters to published, etc.) The only thing I've ever posted to "my" page was to add a factually accurate statement indicating where I went to high school and that I was on the debate and football teams there. I was a good debater and a mediocre (at best) football player, but I offered no qualitative assessments.

Where i may have inadvertently violated Wikipedia standards is on the Clear Creek High School (League City, Texas) article. A reporter for an area paper asked me, in relation to a guest editorial I wrote for the Galveston newspaper--see http://www.galvestondailynews.com/opinion/guest_columns/ for June 15, 2014--what my local connections, if any, were. I told him I graduated from CCHS in 1964 and tried to post a citation to myself as a "Notable alumni" --since I've spoken and been quoted in newspapers world-wide, am a published author, earned a Ph.D., etc., I assumed I'd pass muster as "notable"--but perhaps that's not for me to say. I have no citation for my having gone to CCHS--it was fifty years ago, I no longer even have any high school yearbooks (or can't find them in my cluttered basement if I do).

So, what should I do to correct my grievous errors?

Hello, please review the articles I linked in my notice on your talk page regarding the issues. Specifically review the section "If Wikipedia already has an article about you". This section details the steps you should take to mitigate your conflict of interest and bias. If you familiarize yourself with these articles and ensure you prevent a bias you should be fine. The key is not introducing bias, promotion, or original research. Your indication that you are interested in improving your article so that it can be used as a biography source for other work is not really the purpose of the article. My edit was perhaps not the most constructive, but the page listed 'Cal Wilson' as her birth name, which is not accurate. Adding a quote that distinguishes institutions and regimes

Hi Trlovejoy,

As it stands the article is both minimal and misleading. It almost says nothing, and what it does say is just the journalistic account of the concept. I can understand any concern about making the page too complicated, but it should be at least close to accurate.

What I have done is just add in the classical contemporary political use of the term so that it does not appear that regimes just relate to states. The amount of change you introduced seems like something that should be discussed in the articles talk page prior to adding to the article. Women in STEM fields edit

I'm the person who originally added the entire section "lack of female interest". A few weeks later I realized paragraphs 2 and 3 were overly technical and removed them, with the edit summary "Removed overly technical paragraphs".

Then you came in, apparently missed the edit summary and reverted my change. Then you sent me a message claiming (incorrectly) that I didn't include an edit summary.

I don't want to get in an edit war over this. Please just change it back.

Hello, thanks for the note. I do not see any edit history going back to March 2013 where you edited the Women in STEM fields article. Your user contributions also depict only one edit of the article in question. From what I can tell you did not add the information to the article. I reverted the edits because the indication that the paragraphs were overly technical content did not match the content you removed. Those paragraphs were easily understood and properly cited. I suggest you discuss these edits on the article's Talk Page and then remove based on community decision. --TRL (talk) 11:15, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Right, let's try this again. 1) Yes, I'm the person who made the initial addition. I wasn't logged in the first time I cut out the two paragraphs or commented here, but that was me.
2) The note you left said nothing about an incorrect indication. Instead, your note claimed there was no reason given for the deletion. Either you saw the edit reason but accidentally left the wrong message, or you didn't see the edit reason. Either way, it feels like you're moving the goalposts on me.
3) Paragraphs 2 and 3 are hard for me to try to wrap my head around, and I'm the one who posted them. I'm motivated to share information, but not at the risk of causing readers to skip it because it's hard to grasp. If the reader wants to understand the concepts in greater detail they can always follow the citation link.

Hello to all, specially Trlovejoy. I am new in editing an article in Wikipedia. I thought I had done it well, after reading the instructions. So sorry to have caused any situation. I tried to correct some info, that was not accurate and add the most recent ones. When the name Sonia Noemi Gonzalez comes up in a Google search for ex, the date of birth is seen immediately, and it's not correct. Every detail that was changed or added by me is correct. I added the most recent work in the creative field too, that I thought was important,as a Self Published book written by Sonia Noemi "El Camino De La Serpiente." Apparently I did not do it correctly, but it was not my intention to do any vandalism. Thanks Trlovejoy for your interest in maintaining the highest standards in something so wonderful as Wikipedia. The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon!

Ronald Clark O'Bryan

DEATH O'Bryan's first execution date was set for August 8, 1980. His attorney successfully won a stay of execution. A second date was scheduled for May 25, 1982.[33] That date was also postponed.[6] Judge Michael McSpadden scheduled a third execution date for October 31, 1982, the anniversary of the crime, and he offered to personally drive O'Bryan to the death chamber.[34] It was to have been the first execution in the United States since 1964 and the first time Texas executed an inmate by lethal injection. The Supreme Court delayed the date yet again to give O'Bryan a chance to pursue an appeal to seek a new trial.[35] A fourth date was scheduled for March 31, 1984. O'Bryan's lawyer sought a fourth stay on the basis that lethal injection was a "cruel and unusual punishment". On March 28, a federal judge rejected the request. On March 31, 1984, shortly after midnight, O'Bryan was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit.[36] In his final statement, O'Bryan maintained his innocence stating that he felt the death penalty was "wrong". He added, "...I forgive all - and I do mean all - those who have been involved in my death. God bless you all and may God's best blessings be always yours." During the execution, a crowd of 300 demonstrators gathered outside the prison cheered while some yelled "Trick or treat!". Others showered anti-death penalty demonstrators with candy.[37]

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Doubts about verifiability

Hi! My name is Maciel and I'm quite new on Wikipedia, as editor. I have a few questions, that you can find below:

1) Who puts the warning "This article does not cite any references or sources."?

2) How can this message be removed from an article? Who can do that?

I was editing Kotaro Honda article and i added a cite to make reference of a book, but the message is still there.
