First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or by placing {{helpme}} on your talk page and a small message explaining the problem that you have on Wikipedia that needs solving. Doing so helps your helper and yourself! After placing {{helpme}} someone will come along and give you assitance. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia viewed by millions of people. Therefore, when writing articles, try and stay with an NPOV.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Please use polite and cordial language on talk pages. See these guidlines for more information
  • As a registered user you are now allowed to vote on issues like RfAs
  • Intentionally making non-constructive edits to Wikipedia will result in a block or permanent ban. See this page for more information on Vandalism on Wikipedia.
  • Continuous vandalism can lead to you being blocked. Please see the Blocking Policy to see how to avoid a potential block
Articles....
  • As a user you may write an article on whatever you want but it must comply with What is an article? and Notability
  • Don't upload copyrighted pictures on to Wikipedia as they will be deleted. "Orphan" images (images that don't appear in any articles) will not be kept for very long and may be delted as well
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Your article Tom Higgins (rock climber)[edit]

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Tom Higgins (rock climber), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Tom Higgins (rock climber). You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria.

Please see WP:BIO, WP:AUTO, and WP:NOTABILITY for information on how you may be able to add content which would place the article within the notability standards. Please also feel free to contact me on my talk page if you have any questions or need any assistance.

-- Hi Tom - First off, as you may have read in WP:AUTO, autobiographies are typically frowned upon, mainly due to the fact that it is inherently difficult to maintain NPOV when writing an article about one's self. This is not to say that your article acts in this way, it is merely a statement of general acceptance in Wikipedia articles.

As to what would help show notability, the "Central criteria for inclusion" for a biographical article are:

    • The person has been the primary subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the person.

This criterion includes published works in all forms, such as newspaper articles, magazine articles, books, scholarly papers, and television documentaries2 except for the following:

  • Media reprints of the person's autobiography or self-promotional works.
  • Works carrying merely trivial coverage, such as newspaper articles that just mention the person in passing, telephone directory listings, or simple records of births and deaths.

In essence, if you are able to move the point of view of the article perhaps more to citing published works, etc., and showing yourself to be the subject of these works, it would be helpful (basically quote these verifiable references and cite them).

I will copy our conversation over to the discussion page on the article so that further discussion can be made there allowing the input of other Wikipedians. Thank you for your other edits to climbing-related articles. I'm sure there are hundreds of articles that could use your help. PWdiamond 02:45, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
