A request for assistance[edit]

Hello Todor. I have written an article in the Hebrew wikipedia, about Bulgaria at WWI. This, like many other articles, which are being written these days, is a part of what I call: "The Hebrew Bulgarian National Revival". Sometimes there are some technical fraises which are difficult to translate from Bulgarian language, and the English translation isn't very accurate. One fraise is Commander-in-chief, related to Nikola Zhekov. I request your assistance about this subject. Was gen. Zhekov the commander of the ground troops, the field army?, chief of staff or in a militarily aspect, second in command to king Ferdinand ?. Hi, do you think if the article about the film Whale can be nominated in the section DYK? For example: Did you know that the Bulgarian film Whale was one of the most censored, by the communist authorities, films... or Did you know that the so popular in Bulgaria quote "...sprat but fish...fish but sprat..." comes from the film Whale (or comes from one of the most censored films Whale). Hi again! Thanks for the answer! What a pity with these date requirement... anyway. I agree that the article needs a thorough check for grammar and absolutely agree for these peacock terms. Actually I did not mean these exact words to be used. I just wrote them in the message to underline the points. I don't understand what do you mean with the "related templates"... As for the fair use images, after our last discussion about it, it can be seen that I reduced them at most. ;) But you know the scope of the film articles is such a place. I use as a model the so called featured articles. They all commonly have about 3 or 4 fair use images sometimes more. I use these kind of articles as a model for the whole structure. Actually I started the articles about Mormarevi Brothers and Whale (film) with this in mind. To create them as close as possible to the featured articles in the scope. What do you think? It is not a problem that it is in Bulgarian (we should have som voulenteers that can read that). The importaint is that the owner gave a clear permission (identified the images and accepted a license). List of Bulgarian writers[edit]

Hi Todor. Hope you are well. I've created this list directly from here. Most of the translations seem ok but there are some obvious very bad mistranslations. The list is in the exact same order as that Bulgarian category. Can you be so kind as to quickly scan it and translate any mistranslations. Great, thanks. Yeah most look OK but I fully know there are several mistranslations which have been done literally like Onion of Rasberry!! Ideally I'd like more sources for the Abadjiev article but I couldn't find many on the web anyway other than music blogs. Actually I think it might be a good idea to create a few more Bulgaria related lists. By using Bulgarian categories we can root out what articles are missing so at some point they can be started in English. No harm in my view trying to work towards the same sort of coverage as on Bulgarian wikipedia, but we needs more contributors like yourself!! I've added poets and dramatists in new sections to the list. The two new Bulgarian lists are in the talk page.. If you want to merge them all into one at the end of you checking I have no objections. There is probably considerable overlap with some writers being both poets and playerights etc anyway.. OK, thanks for the quick reply. I'll try to finish as much as I can over the next few days before Easter. As I told Gligan, the chief concerns I hope to be addressed by Bulgarian sources fall into three broad categories: a) the Bulgarian participation in the military side of the conflict, b) the perceptions by the Bulgarians of the Rus' occupation and of the Byzantine "liberation", both contemporary and modern, and c) the effects on Bulgarian statehood. Quite the opposite about the emphasis on statements here, usually the statement that comes last has more weight, at least in this case. The construction of the sentence would give the reader a more conclusive point of view on the given statement. I know what you mean, but given that I can't agree on including the "most" part (it's unsourced and very hard to reference properly), the sentence would be giving more weight to Elsie than he deserves in this case. Consider:

"Some scholars including David Marshall Lang state simply that he was of Bulgarian origin, while Robert Elsie generalizes him as being of Macedonian Slav descent."

and:

"Robert Elsie generalizes him as being of Macedonian Slav descent, while some scholars including David Marshall Lang state simply that he was of Bulgarian origin"

Also, in the prior sentence we state a large number of scholars who confirm his mother was Bulgarian. Putting Elsie between "Bulgarian mother" and "Bulgarian origin" would be inconsistent. Todor→Bozhinov 12:17, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you actually took my edits seriously and read them, they are simply more balanced use of language, not changing the facts. They are not POV at all, the whole point was to make them less POV. I agree about moving it, I didnt know the procedure, I'm a noob user. I dont think my changes were very controversial, and didnt need too much backing because it was mostly syntax, not altering the facts or representation of the facts. I am a student of Linguistics so I can see when language, if even a little POV, can affect a readers opinion of the topic, so I try to balance wording throughout wikipedia. Gjorce Petrov[edit]

Hi, I find the emphasis in my talk rather unapropriate. There is no need for war threats as well. Being cool and civil is one of Wikipedia's pillars. There is no need of aggressiveness.
Back to the point, please write the reasons why shouldn't we move the article in Gjorce's original name or even back to Gjorce's. I have wrote my reasons there, here is it again. Both Gjorce (45000 hits) and Gjorche (27000hits) are dominant on Google compared to Gyorche Petrov that has around 500hits. You get even a spelling error in Google saying "Did you mean: "gjorce petrov"". That ratio will not change since Gjorce Petrov is common Macedonian search in Google. Bulgarians do not search for him because he is fairly neglected in Bulgarian history. He was speaking loudly for autonomous Macedonia and against Bulgaria in that time. I need his biography because I write a book about the people called Bunyevci, and in some part of the books that I used like references I found something about this man. The Croatians says that he was his member, because he was a catholic priest. Thats is a their reason. Same thing is with people which history I am writing. Thanks for the understanding, mate. Unfortunately, I think the article needs some further expansion for DYK: it went from 3,243 to 9,469 bytes today, and that's less than a 3x expansion. It's a very interesting and important piece, so try to expand it further with additional sources, if available (I know how hard it can be to find detailed biographies of Balkan people). Thank you! Yeah, I don't think I'm going to get the DYK, but who cares. I just learned a lot today from Materialscientist about how to reference. Perks of bringing things to DYK: have people look into your articles. I really don't want to give blocks of citations to bring it to another 1000 characters, because it would ruin my article. The point is that this Meksi was COMPLETELY forgotten by the communist regime, so no one wrote anything decent about him, while we have so many biographies of people who counted less than him. I mean he IS the author of the translation, everyone who endeavored after him, like Kostandin Kristoforidhi just partially copied his work. He started from scratch. There's no reason you won't get the article to DYK if you can expand it, it's pretty much the only remaining issue with it. I don't think an expansion with some good sources can ruin your article, but if you have to resort to mostly trivial facts in order to get to a 5x expansion, then it's useless indeed.
You're right, communist regimes often tend to 'forget' and ignore important people from a nation's history, particularly when they did not express any admiration for that ideology. Meksi seems like a figure of genuine importance, so a good expansion of the article on him is well justified.
As for the Bulgarian translation, the first was by Theodoius, abbot of the Bistritsa Monastery in Romania, though it was not very good. The 1838 translation by Neofit Rilski had more success. Todor→Bozhinov 06:42, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Expanded Meksi, now I think DYK should be forthcoming. I think I understood why the communist regime silenced Meksi. There were two reasons: first he had closely collaborated with the British and Albania after the Corfu Channel Incident and the rupture of the diplomatic relations with the UK in 1946 had a very strict policy of silencing everyone who had had any relationship with the anglo-saxon world. The second, probably more important reason, was Meksi's participation in the Greek War of Independence. Indeed all the Arvanites were not spoken of during communist times. I had no clue who Marko Boçari or Theodoros Kolokotronis were until 1990. I have never understood why communist Albania had this attitude. Probably the Albanian government wanted to pursue Albanization of the Greeks, the same way that Greece had helenizized the Arvanites? It's the only explanation that I can give myself. Btw, I really like Neofit Rilski. Indeed, DYKcheck detects a 5x expansion now, good work and a great collaboration you got there! The reasons you provide for the lack of information about Meksi during the Hoxha regime (pro-British and pro-Greek stance) seem very reasonable, it's exactly such stuff that would make a totalitarian government erase any mention of a person.
Theodosius seems to be a different case as compared to Meksi though, the vast majority of copies of his translation were destroyed shortly after the publication, probably due to the inferior quality. First, try not to take yourself (or anything, for that matter) too seriously, there's no need for that. Then, reread the sentence that I'm editing: "In parts of the former Yugoslavia (i.e. Macedonia, Slovenia, Slavonija in Croatia, and Vojvodina in Serbia), the term Swab (locally Švaba, from Шваба) is somewhat applied to all German peoples who lived in those regions until shortly after World War II..."
  1. You want an explanation, here it is: Slovenia, Slavonia and Vojvodina were all inhabited by significant German populations before World War II. The modern Republic of Macedonia wasn't, neither was Bulgaria, or if you want an Yugoslav example, neither were Sandžak, Montenegro, Kosovo or Šumadija. "Macedonia" looks odd in there because of that, and so would look Sandžak, Montenegro, Kosovo or Šumadija. This is the logic behind that sentence as I see it. I'm not saying there was not a single German in the region of Macedonia (though they were certainly a handful), merely that there was no local ethnic community that was referred to as Swabians by the locals. Sure, we also say "играят швабите" in a semi-derogatory/semi-affectionate way, but this is *not* what the sentence refers to. The previous sentence is about this use of the word, and you didn't see me removing "Macedonia" from that one, did you?
  2. Tell me, what other reason would there be for the inclusion of the Republic of Macedonia on that list? I don't think it can be anything else but a Macedonian person who saw Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia together and felt left out. I'd really like to read your opinion on that one. And no, I don't think I have to apologize for anything.

I do take some things very seriously, especially the stuff you people do (yeah, I'm talking about our beloved neighbors). Most of the time there's not even a 'G' of Good Faith, and I find myself quite offended.
That sentence is indeed about the German population that lived in the mentioned regions, which is fair enough, but I didn't see you adding "Macedonian" to the previous sentence either. The thing that got me was your comment (i.e. edit summary). Do you really think I added "Macedonia" solely because I saw other countries from the former Yugoslavia, which I truly and utterly despise? Didn't it ever cross your mind that maybe I just wanted to add Macedonia because the term is heavily used and abused in that country too? Well, anyway, I gotta tell you honestly, it didn't seem right to do that, but I had to include Macedonia/Macedonian somewhere, because Macedonians simply just overuse that term, and I didn't have the time to think whether it looks perfect or not. Blame me for that, but I was hoping that another good-hearted fellow Wikipedian would make a good faith edit and correct me, adding Macedonian as one of the languages where the term is used instead. But no, you had to assume that I'm a Yugobrainwashed Serbowestbulgarian person who feels that Macedonia belongs wherever the other ex-Yugoslav republics are, for better or for worse. Alright, so if we leave aside the "blah-blah-blah I'm so sick of people not respecting Macedonians and doing bad stuff to us", I take it the current version of the article is acceptable?
Most Macedonian editors I've encountered have expressed radically irredentist and often pro-Yugoslavia views. I still think my comment is correct, from what I've seen, the Republic of Macedonia does like to appear in lists that include other former Yugoslav countries, even if this is not justified or barely justified.
Sure, you yourself might not be longing for the good old days of Yugoslavia, I take your word for that, but that doesn't change my overall opinion. I still think "Macedonia likes to be in every list of Yugoslavia". Just please don't take it personally. Really, the whole mindset about the evil neighbours who won't let Macedonia prosper is crap, but I wouldn't really like to get into that discussion.

Hi Biruitorul, I'm very happy to see you back and contributing once again! It's a great article, I don't know how I missed it (I sometimes do a search for southeastern European country names on T:TDYK for submissions to verify).
I'm not sure it qualifies though, according to the rules, a submission has to be no more than five days old. The article was created on 2 July and nominated on 8 July under the 7 July section. You rewrote it on 7 July and moved it to its current name. As it stands, it was not expanded fivefold from 2 to 7 July either.
Needless to say, hook #1 verifies and hook #2 is a solidly-referenced AGF (no access to preview), length requirement is perfectly covered, but I think it might be just a bit too old for DYK, unfortunately. I'd recommend that you contact one of the admins who takes care of DYK or initiate a discussion at WT:DYK, but I really can't validate the article myself. Sorry about that :(

Thanks, that would be a great way to collaborate! Please note though that I don't think pretty much anyone at the time had a Macedonian national consciousness, that began to appear much later. Bulgarian revolutionaries from Macedonia certainly identified with the region, but not at a national or ethnic level.
I think the biographies you'd like to start are related to the sources that you'll be relying on. What sources do you have available? I can perhaps point you to some books, but then I need to know what part of the struggle you're interested in, what period, what kind of people. There's a good number of IMRO bios at bg:Категория:Дейци на ВМРО, of which I'm pretty sure the more important are well covered in English thanks to the work of a few contributors who are interested in that topic.
Perhaps we can collaborate on an article about Vërnik, a village in Albania which formerly had a Bulgarian population and has a very decent article in Bulgarian. I could probably translate that article and look for some additions from Bulgarian sources and you could help with modern history, geography, etc.

Todor I started to contribute in Wikipedia in 2008, but only in July 2009 I started to be heavier in the number of edits. In this past year, I can say that I have probably been one of the most active Balkanic contributors and there have been some people who striked me with the content they have provided. One is Cplakidas, the other one is you, the third one is GregorB from Croatia. I asked Cplakidas to apply for adminship [3], but it seems like he would rather focus on content only [4]. I have to ask you the same question: we really need someone from the Balkans, actually 2-3 admins from the Balkans would be even better, so that disputes are resolved not only from FPS, who by the way has done an incredible job so far. We have to start having admins from the Balkans. If we only had three-four admins from the Balkans, many disputes would be resolved more easily and FPS would have some help. In addition the epic wars would be solved by people who better know the Balkans such as you, Cplakidas, or GregorB. Please don't rush to give me a negative answer like Cplakidas did, I would really like you to think a little about it. It's people like you who mentor other contributors: they are impressed by an admin who has provided content, knows wikipedia rules and applies them honestly. --Sulmues (talk) 15:27, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I also thank you for your trust and support. A request for adminship is something that I have thought about; in fact, I had a request a long time ago that, while unsuccessful, was not without support either.
However, there are many reasons due to which I would not make a good admin and in fact, even more reasons due to which I would not like to become an admin. I have a strong personal opinion, particularly regarding topics pertaining to the Balkans, and this is not something that I would like to give up. In my edits, I may try to retain neutrality, but I will certainly not be the appropriate person to decide a dispute between a Bulgarian and a Macedonian, for example. While I tend to enjoy weighing in on a good discussion, I am certainly not the person to solve it.
In fact, I think it may be for the better that we do not have Balkan admins: there is still too much prejudice to neighbouring nations in our region and the opinion of "neighbours" is always taken with a grain of salt. This is not without reason: disputes between our nations are still very much alive and kicking and it would be unsound to think that a Wikipedian from the Balkans could be entirely neutral to a topic directly linked to the peninsula. As a Bulgarian, I am by default a side in most Balkan-related disputes, and to be honest, I could never be completely neutral to most.
I am also relatively busy with my job. Essentially, my editing is limited mostly to minor corrections and one or two new articles per month at best. I would not like to give up the most interesting part of the Wikipedia experience for me, writing new articles, for the unenviable and monotonous job that adminship is. In the few hours I can devote to Wikipedia, I would prefer to enrich its content and enjoy myself, making friends in the meanwhile, instead of boring myself to death and becoming an enemy of most other Balkan persons.
I very much enjoy writing articles for DYK, GAN and FAC and the trans-Balkan co-operation that ensues and I believe this is, for the moment, the area of Wikipedia that I feel comfortable in. Adminship is a tough, unenviable and overly responsible task for my liking, so I feel I will have to decline.

Thanks for your help with Aziz Çami, but the fact that Zog extracted his pistol to shoot back is just a legend of 1930s Albanian sources, which Miranda Vickers liked and wrote about. As a result, Alt1 would be nice, if it were confirmed by all parties. However Prelë Milani is also a good source that brings onto the table all the memories of Ndok Gjeloshi, who was the other killer. Ndok Gjeloshi not only debunks the claims that Zogu shot back, but he also adds that while he was being arrested, he heard and saw Zog behave completely histerically. So I would stand by the original hook as approved by you: the hook stays in the talk page forever, and I would like it to be non controversial. Zjarri liked Alt1, but he wanted both mine and your approval. At the moment, it's in the article as a referenced fact, which is misleading. Having a non-controversial and well-verified hook is a must, of course. Never mind, I thought I would get lots of sources but there were other Solomon Goldsteins I was looking at. Beserks seems to have a tendency of finding very interesting characters to write about.
