Azhar controversy[edit]

hi., Azhar selection itself was a controversy as the same was a vote against the lack of performance from the youngsters in the preceding Aussie tour and bringing back the veterans. In this charged climate, Azhar's name was announced in the squad and was later declared as injuired. Also, making a brief comeback during the SA tour was Nayan Mongia. --Kalyan 17:07, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scorers[edit]

Hi Tintin. on p278-279, it credits JA pendlington. This is from a newspaper cutting on Jan 16 1914 about JAP's death. "The story it told was that Mr John Atkinson Pendlington, a great lover of cricket, when reviewing on a winter's evening the important contests as reported by Lillywhite and Wisden thought it should be possible to devise a scorebook to record the result of every ball bowled in a match. He soon had it worked out and tooke the score at Scarborough in Lord Londesbrough's match against he Australians in 1893 (Mr C.I. thronton's XI). This record showed, for, all time, the number of balls each batsman received frmo each bowler, adn what runs he made from them. It caused much amusement and pleasure to Dr WG Grace who has was Scarborough and was presented with the authentic document. john Atkinson Pendlington was born in South Shields in 1861 and he and his son played for Benwell in the Northumberland League. He was noted as a Shakspearean scholar and a good conversationalist and he founded the Tyneside Supply Company which later became the Brtish Electrical and Manufacturing Company of Newcastle and London" Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:50, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Morris[edit]

My edition of WBCR is quite old. It suggests that Roy Minnett in this match may have gone from c40* to c160* on the second day of the match. But I see Cricket Archive now believes that Minnett was 65* at close of play on day one, so it could be that he was short: it depends how accurate the c160* at lunch is. If it isn't Minnett, then Morris does seem to be the first in a Shield match, though other Australians had done it in other games: Macartney and Punch for NSW in New Zealand, and Clem Hill and Stan McCabe in Test matches at Johannesburg. I've put in my two penn'orth on Bradman's talk page about the "universally acknowledged" question. I think that Fingleton isn't the most objective of writers on Bradman, but there are certainly still those who think that Grace was Bradman's equal. I can safely say that I'm not, because I don't know what that is :) !! Phanto282 07:56, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to disappoint...lol. I have a suggestion to resolve the problem of the size of SDB biog, namely hacking copy for a "Don Bradman controversies" daughter article. It would read (1) aloofness from teammates (2) Bodyline (3) Conflicts with Fingleton and O'Reilly (4) War service (mush criticism that he played too hard using Lindwall & Miller) (5) Throwing - he wrote the rules on chucking in the early 60s (6) WSC. This would remove plenty of text from the biog to leave room for the sections that others want to put in. I don't favour moving stuff to the Bodyline article as its FA and would need still more work incorporating stuff about SDB. And that's what life's all about, innit? ...trying to reduce your workload :)

Muddiah waters[edit]

Mmm. Wisden only changed its listings to the present system, whereby all past Test and all current first-class players are noted with full names, with the 2004 edition. Before that, Muddiah appears only as V.M.Muddiah in the Births and Deaths of Cricketers annual list (at the back since the late 1930s) and the list of Test cricketers towards the front. The full name, for the record, from 2004 is "Muddiah, Venatappa Musandra". My 1984 edition of Who's Who of Cricketers (by the people who brought us Cricket Archive) has him as "Muddiah, Ventappa Musandra", but the Complete Who's Who of Test Cricketers by Christopher Martin-Jenkins from 1980 has him as Venatappa. I can't find any mention of him apart from his initials and "Muddiah" in the Wisdens of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Johnlp 21:13, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose someone could write to him and ask him?? Directly or care of the authorities? Just a thought... Be a missed opportunity if it wasn't sorted out while he is still alive! Johnlp 00:30, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kippax[edit]

I see what you mean, but I picked that photo over the one you have just pointed out because it looks like the late cut shot IMO. I judged it on the reaction of the slip fielder (who seems to be making an effort to lean down and cut the ball off) and the wicketkeeper. It's interesting cos the late cut has basically disappeared from the game, with a few rare exceptions. It used to be an important criteria on which a great player was judged, but players use the square cut today which is a different shot. Take your point on Trumper...lol, although there is some criticism to be found and not everyone thought he was saint (apparently, he was born illegimately in NZ???). I'm almost frustrated out of contributing again cos the article is balanced, and I always write in that manner (see Bradman, for e.g.). I want people to point out mistakes so I can follow them up, but I'm not interested in editors dressing up opinions as faults, then not stating whether they support or oppose. Hi Tintin. Yes, I think you are right. CZ has a definite whiff of elitism about it and they're going to be hard pushed to change that impression. Malayalee[edit]

Hello,

There's a problem in the Malayalee article. The points of contention are the following:

  • Dayaanjali doesn't want the article to mention that marumakkathayam (matrilineality/matrifocality) were practiced by the Nairs. i.e., as a community, Nairs were known to be matrifocal/matrilineal, and a martial class.
  • Dayaanjali insists the the words "Malayali" comes from the Malayalam words Malai and Aali. Historically, the region has been known as Malayalam before the genesis of the Malayalam language. Hence, the words probably originated from old Tamil. He also seems to think that Malayalam originated independently of Tamil, whereas (facts aside) all linguists state that Malayalam split off from Tamil about 800 AD or 900 AD.

Since you are active in Kerala-related articles, I request you to take a look at this matter. Dayaanjali seems unwilling to discuss changes in the talk page. Initially we had a discussion. I provided references to support my points. After this, he has refused to discuss the points, claiming that my edits are "unverified". The discussion is here. I know there is some elements of "caste" in this, but I don't think it's that prominent. The problem is that this user refuses to discuss the changes I have made, and reverts them, calling them "vandalism". --vi5in[talk] 16:15, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AL Hassett[edit]

It's all about Hassett at the moment, everyone's favourite...can you imagine him knocking on the Don's door at 2am for a couple of clarets?? Seriously, I have this from the 49 Wisden [3]: "On the way home the Australians played a number of matches in India, where Hassett set up an Indian record with 187 and 124 not out against the Princes XI." [4] Can you help me with what Wisden means here, what was the record? Thx in advance....

Phanto282 (talk) 05:02, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thx for your research; I guess Wisden was referring to him being the 1st o/s player to score a ton in both inns...do you think that's worthwhile putting in? If so, do you have a ref I could use. Also, I think Archie Jackson is nearly ready for FAC, can you do a scan and leave some thoughts? I think the style section might be a problem, remembering what happened to Kippax. Cheers

Arlott - do we need such a long list ?

I take the view that almost all of the books of Arlott (and Cardus and Swanton) are significant. I confess that I've only read a few of Arlott's books, so that I would find deciding what to omit very difficult.

Armstrong - Shield - haven't heard of this; notable ?

I haven't heard of it either. I suppose if you're an Australian you may think it notable.

ACS books - do we need the fc matches list ? May be because the title specifically mention historians ?

Yes, I think so.

Fyzul Hassanali - who is this ?

No idea.

Martin Wilson - index to Waghorn

Perhaps should appear as a footnote to the Waghorn entry?

Samuel Goud - the article calls him a SF writer. Are these book significant ?

I think that should be "Youd". Arlott wrote: "...since 1946 the best [novels] have been The Friendly Game and Malleson at Melbourne of William Godfrey's unfinished trilogy, and Harold Hobson's The Devil at Woodford Wells."

For Woodcock and Wright, we should have some proper books instead of these.

As far as I can see, the book listed for Woodcock is his only one - surprising for such a prolific and influential journalist, I agree about Wright.

Since the scope is huge, we have to put some filter somewhere, or split into many articles

Possibly split into:

  • histories/statistical/reference
  • reminiscences/tour journals/biographies (but only those of some literary merit or that provide genuine insights)
  • fiction (and poetry?)

JH (talk page) 09:25, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The ACS match lists are the bedrock of all cricket records. The fact that some people choose to ignore certain matches is neither here nor the there. the records that appear in Wisden are based on these lists and score amendments so they are important. Wilson's book is well regarded by historians of that era. Incidentally, The Devil at Woodford Wells is is my view the only decent, serious novel that involves cricket. H de Selincourt's first book is very good but probably not a serious bookFieldgoalunit (talk) 19:39, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A plague on all 20/20 nonsense. It's a shame they couldn't fix 50 Overs cricket, which at least rewards technique - all those World Cup screw-ups and ineffectual tinkerings with the 50 Overs rules have caused this. --Dweller (talk) 14:27, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Punjab Kings[edit]

If you are watching the India-SA series, you must have noticed an advertisement by IPL where at the end the teams are listed. There Kings XI Punjab is used so we can safely assume that Kings XI Punjab is the official name of the Mohali Twenty20 franchise. Also, another page Mohali Twenty20 franchise exists about the same team. What I suggest is delete the Mohali Twenty20 franchise page, delete the Kings XI Punjab page temporarily and rename Punjab Kings to Kings XI Punjab. That way only one page would exist. Please give it a thought and reply on my talkpage as to what you think of this proposal. Thanks. CSumit (talk) 09:01, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Trumble[edit]

I would never ignore any suggestion from you. :-) Thanks very much for taking a look at it for me. I'm at work at present but will take a good look at your suggestions later this (AEST) evening. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 05:45, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tintin. You mentioned at Wikipedia:Peer review/Hugh Trumble/archive1 that you would review Hugh Trumble. If you still were able to, it would be much appreciated. -- Mattinbgn\talk 21:35, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BFOs[edit]

In 82/83 (maybe a bit later) Australia played a couple of unofficial ODIs in support of the relief fund seeking to help those who lost everything to devastating bush fires. Will try and dig out some more information. WillE (talk) 20:51, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clement Hill[edit]

Punch on his 188 at MCG, 1897-98:

I would like to sing
A little thing

About young Clement Hill,

Whose plucky play
On Saturday

Completely filled the bill.

He pasted Richardson about,

And Hayward, too, in turn,

And fairly knocked "the devil" out

Of clever Johnnie Hearne.

Did Clement Hill
Whose batting skill

Has often made the lion ill.

He saw our boys
Go down like toys,

He did not catch the blight,

But pegged away
Throughout the day

And whacked 'em out of sight. He was not, as some batsmen were,

Content to make "a score,"

One score is neither here nor there-

He knocked up nine and more,
For Hill a whoop;
He worked a scoop,

And pulled as all from out the soup!

Tate nickname[edit]

I hadn't seen it before, but found that his Wusden obituary, as quoted in his Cricinfo profile, begins: Maurice William Tate, Chubby to his many friends and admirers, died at his home at Wadhurst, Sussex, on May 18, aged 61. JH (talk page) 08:28, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that does seem logical. I put the nickname where I did simply because that was where it was originally. I'm happy for you to change it. JH (talk page) 09:38, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot immediately recall where I found that toothsome muffin, but I'll rummage through my sources over the coming week. Cheers, Robertson-Glasgow (talk) 10:27, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
