Re: What's My Line guest panelists

Hi, yes I agree that these lists can get tedious. I have no problem putting this list elsewhere--though I do not think that burying the info. within a talk page is of any use as it will most likely never be resurrected. I do not see a problem of having such long lists of guests under their own article, but I think it is more relevant and accessble to have the list within a trivia section at the end of the article. Deletion of Image - Andy Creeggan

You deleted Image:Andag1.jpg from Andy Creeggan citing that it is not used to for identification and critical commentary on the music video in question. I would argue that it is used to identify Andy Creeggan and demonstrate his appearance in that video (just like a screenshot, say, of 24 may be used in an article about a character to ID that character, rather than to ID the show or episode... I understand that; My question is why you feel that identification of how someone appeared in that video does not qualify. Note the image Image:Jean-Luc_Picard1.jpg is also a TV screenshot; like thousands of TV and movie characters on wiki, the image is used to ID the character, though the image is not being used to specifically identify the episode or scene in question. I understand that the copyright for screenshots say 'and its contents' at the end, but it's the same fair use law for music videos as film and tv shots; and that phrase should apply equally to music video screenshots, which are tv screenshots; just because whoever made the template didn't use the phrase 'and its contents' shouldn't necessarily alter the qualifications for use. Hello again, TheHYPO. I believe when the template says "identification", it means identification of "the music video in question", not identification of anything desired. I agree that there are tons of fair use abuses on Wikipedia, but a thousand erros don't make a right. I also believe that when {{movie-screenshot}} says "it's contents", it's not allowing us to use a movie screenshot just to illustrate an article on some person depicted on that screenshot. Also, these templates were not made at some editor's will. They should follow the Wikipedia's Fair Use policies. That image is acceptable as fair use in any article doing critical commentary on the video. Just mentioning the video is no good. Some few lines about the video, is no good. (I'm not implying you intend to do that, I'm just warning you about a very commom type of Fair Use abuse on Wikipedia). The text should be the cause behind the image use, not the reverse.
Even if the article is changed to make a deep critical disscussion on the video, we should avoid using that image as the main image on the article (at the top), as it would be still being used to identification of the subject.
Of course, this is all my interpretations of the fair use policies on Wikipedia and I'm open to discussion.
TheHYPO, I appreciate your intentions to put an image on the Andy Creeggan article. I agree that images greatly improve Wikipedia's article. But free images, although harder to get, are a thousand times better choice. Have you tried to find some free image for this article? I have had some recent success in findding freely licensed images to use in Wikipedia by searching pictures on Flickr and, when they are not already free, contacting the photographer and asking if he/she would be interested in having his work used on Wikipedia. Barenaked Ladies Are Me

Hey! I don't typically use Wikipedia to talk about things other than articles, what needs to be done, etc., but I couldn't resist this time around. I'm a big Barenaked Ladies fan, and I was curious what you knew about the upcoming release on USB through werkshop.com (seeing as how you were the one who added it on the page). TTC Stations

Thanks for your comment. Proposal for managing song lists on Simpsons episodes

Hi, hope you don't mind me posting to your userpage but I'm trying to collect opinion on a proposal relating to The Simpsons and, despite posting to various talk pages, I've had no feedback at all (except from a co-planner). I don't mind if all the opinion is negative (then I'll just forget the idea) but I'd like it to get some visibiltiy. I'm not going to go implement it unless the consensus is positive.

I'm proposing changing the way we manage lists of songs in episodes. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject The Simpsons/Proposal for managing song lists on Simpsons episodes which has a full explanation of the proposal. Please leave comments there.

In case you weren't aware....

...you don't actually "own" the Barenaked Ladies articles that are here. See WP:OWN. And Barenaked Ladies Are Men is its own album. You don't have the right to revert edits - especially when they're so convincingly proven - because it doesn't suit YOUR perception of what the articles should be. I've been here longer than you and one of the things you'll have to learn is that collaboration is a major part of wikipedia and that no one has ownership over the articles. There are also serious NPOV issues in your writing (there is a difference between encyclopedic writing and the musings of a fan). I strongly suggest you leave the pages as they are - specifically the new album, or else I will have to get an admin involved and will be proven right. Learn to be flexible. It'll be to your benefit. (Have you looked at the official BNL site lately? Both new albums are listed for sale separately. Both albums are also being reviewed separately - look at All Music Guide, for example. How much more proof do you need?).

My concern about article Barenaked Ladies Are Men

I hope not to seem unfriendly or argumentative, but I'm concerned about article Barenaked Ladies Are Men, which you have edited. Could we discuss that concern here?

I feel it is better that we make this debate more known to the public so we can hopefully come to a consensus. This template is more a formality than anything else. As I've already said, I could sway either way at this point.

I'd appreciate learning your own views, understanding your reasons for your particular edits, and discussing what alternatives might avoid raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

  • If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
  • If you prefer, we can discuss the matter at Talk:Barenaked Ladies Are Men, where other editors could contribute their viewpoints.
  • If we can't agree in either setting, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as asking for a "third opinion", or requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Admins usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
  • If you prefer not to deal with me at all, you can ask others for guidance: there are experienced Wikipedians who offer mentorship, "adoption", or advocacy; and many admins will also make the time to answer earnest questions on their talk pages (though some are either very busy or away on "Wikibreak").
  • Any time you feel overwhelmed by the complexity of it all, you can simply post {{helpme}} here on your talk page, with a description of your questions or problems, and someone will show up to help you find answers or solutions.

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your editing is so bad that you should just stop or be stopped. I wanted to clarify here that I meant this image was obsolete in terms of 'not needed'. The image is the same as the gif above and the jpg mentioned, and only the jpg is in use. I don't have a preference for which of the three images is kept (my impression is that this image would be best stored as an svg) - but see no reason that we need to keep all 3. ~ BigrTex 09:13, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Cups and balls

Notice that the title of the section is "how to perform". A short summary is fine, but a ten paragraph explanation that goes through every detail and gives the reader explicit instructions on how to do something is not. See WP:NOT. --Captain Wikify Argh! 21:21, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

I don't know anything about magic. But I do know a lot about Wikipedia. My thought process: Hmm... Someone appears to have put a section about performing a magic trick in an article and added hidden text in an apparent attempt to keep anyone from removing it. Well, since they're that desperate to keep it there, they must be the kind of person who will blindly revert me and keep adding that section back. I should A.) remove the section and B.) add hidden text that will prevent them from re-adding the section.
The reason I deleted it was not the length; it was because the section itself was a set of instructions, as opposed to a simple explanation. You're welcome to re-add it, but make it shorter and more applicable to Wikipedia rules. --Captain Wikify Argh! 21:29, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Instruction manuals. While Wikipedia has descriptions of people, places, and things, Wikipedia articles should not include instructions, advice (legal, medical, or otherwise) or suggestions, or contain "how-to"s. This includes tutorials, walk-throughs, instruction manuals, video game guides, and recipes. Note that this does not apply to the Wikipedia: namespace, where "how-to"s relevant to editing Wikipedia itself are appropriate, such as Wikipedia:How to draw a diagram with Dia. If you're interested in a how-to style manual, you may want to look at our sister project Wikibooks.

Oh, stop. You want the simple truth? I was right. The section was pointless and went against a simple Wikipedia rule; I removed it. It's called a Wiki for a reason. If you have a problem with my removal of the section, fix it yourself. And more importantly, who cares? You're acting as though this is some huge deal that will forever lower Wikipedia's accuracy. I followed a policy by removing something that shouldn't have been, and you keep harping on me about it. I have explained, numerous times, that what I did was completely justified, yet you can't seem to understand it for some reason, and you're seriously bugging me by repeatedly trying to save face by attempting to make a point. Let me be very clear: I know what I'm doing. And I don't have time to argue with you about something no one cares about. I'm busy; go fix whatever you think is broken by yourself. I never said to you to put up video links, I know it's against the rules which is why I told him we can't. I'm well aware that the band was on "Behind the Music" but how do we know what information was actually said in that tv special? We don't. For all we know, you or anyone else for that matter can just make up information and credit it to the "Behind the Music" special. The bottom line is, we don't know what was said in that tv special so all we can do is go off what you are saying and I don't think that's a good idea. One last comment regarding the situation

If you are going to keep these sources, then there are some things that should really be removed. These are things that I find should really be removed until more sources are found. I think you should find this reasonable. Here's the list:

It says Tyler Stewart thinks Andy was never happy or whatever it was, that he was replaced as percussionist. This is very suspicious. I've been a huge fan for years and this information seems very odd epsically from what I've seen in all the interviews they've done. It needs to be removed.

If your going to use the tv specials as sources, at the very least, don't use direct quotes. There are things in there that you've quoted Steve and Ed as saying exactly. This is not a good idea. They need to be removed.

The film infobox no longer displays awards, it's too biased. Sorry about your plot clean-up, but it do look awfully stretched. This article has so many up and down days, sigh, with the plot ballooning and deflating. Often I've assumed good faith over people getting the article to a decent level, but... The BnL page is now fixed, there's no more tags.

What do you think of it? I added 8 additional sources to go along with the 7 we already have. They are sources for all the sentences that were tagged such as the ones that said BNL took part in that Shakespeare project, BNL took part in Live 8, BNL's "Lovers In A Dangerous Time" was their first top 40, Andy left to go to McGill University etc. Everything is now sourced. It's great.

However, there WERE a few SMALL sentences that I had to delete and I explain why on the edit page. Some of it was just wrong such as the "E2E got positive reviews", no it didn't. Ed even admitted on his blog that the album was trashed. The whole thing with this boxset, I couldn't find any information and there hasn't even been an announcement lately HOWEVER as soon as the band gives ANY news on it, I will GLADLY put the boxset info back up. Also, the last thing was "MYSD was more mature", I couldn't any source for this, and that's really a matter of opinion anyways since MYSD can still be seen as comical album, it wasn't until Maroon that the band REALLY starting taking things more seriously image wise and they have admitted this too.

So please TheHYPO, I did alot of work yesterday on this. Please don't go reverting back everything just because I took down 2 or 3 small sentences. I wanted to get that "original research" tag taken off finally. I hope you don't revert everything.

I wrote that entire page except for 3 or 4 sentences, I was the one who sourced everything and I spent months working on that article since that band has a 30 year history, so please, don't act like I don't know anything about wikipedia. I don't appreciate that at all.

Yes, I could have given source descriptions to all the sources I added but I didn't have the time. The page was in deseparate need of those sources so I had to act quick and just get those sources up. By all means, go back and give proper descriptions to all the sources, I encourage that, at least now the page is sourced and those tags are finally gone.

I never said just because I wrote the whole Toto page, I know everything, I never said that. Obviously I still have stuff to learn. The whole thing with signatures is something I'm working on, I don't normally post in talk pages, I'll work on that. But I think your being very nit-picky, your trying to find things wrong with me because you don't like that I touched the BNL page, believe me, even though you haven't said it, your still strongly implying that you feel you own the BNL page and you don't like anyone else touching it, well you don't own it.

Bottom line, I've improved the page. I put those tags up which got you to add more sources, plus I put more sources up myself, the article is better now because of what I've done. And honestly, if I didn't start this whole thing by putting up those tags to begin with, you wouldn't have done anything, right now, the page would probably still only have had those 3 sources and all that stuff would have been left unsourced. I get the strong impression from your whole attitude during this whole thing you that you really couldn't be bothered to improve the page at least not anyime soon. Blanking out things

On the BNL page, I only blanked out the part about us talking about my signature which was supposed to be blanked out. It had nothing to do with BNL in any way. What you said there on the BNL talk page, you should have said on my talk page. That talk page is for BNL discussion only.

Not only that, but I want nothing to do with that page anymore. It's impossible for anyone other than you to edit it in any way. You have taken over the whole page. It's like a monopoly. I remember I tried editing some stuff back around March and almost immediately, you reverted everything. Well guess what, your violating this rule Wikipedia:Ownership of articles ,you are behaving as if you own the page and I will be reporting you for this because quite frankly enough is enough. Changing the main image

I remember you said you had another group shot of the band. Is there any chance you can upload it and replace the main group image that's there now? I think the picture is bad because it's insulting to Steven Page, it makes him look like a moron. Readers who come across the page that don't know much about the band will not realize that is Steve is just joking around in that picture, they will actually think he's crazy or something. It's best to replace it. As a fellow BNL fan, I'm sure you would want all the band members to be portrayed in the best and fairest way possible. Writer1400 (talk) 14:11, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm in the middle of exams. I don't have time to search through my photos right now. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the photo, so I don't really want to spend the time instead of studying. I should also point out that there are tons of photos of celebrities on wikipedia that are pretty bad photos just because they are free. The BNL one at very least looks presentable and shows them as a group, at work. I've always hated the photo used at Tom Hanks. Terrible photo. The photo of his wife Rita Wilson doesn't even really show her face. I know for a fact that (minor) news organizations as well as concert promoters have pulled the photo and used it for articles and ticket sales, so I think that if they feel the photo isn't too insulting to print, I don't think wikipedia should either.
And I'm not sure I ever said I had other group shots of the band (I have plenty of access to screenshots, but we're not talking about that). I probably do have a few others that I've taken (and I might have said so) but to be clear, it's probably a dozen photos at most out of several hundred concert shots. It would take a while to find that I don't have right now, and I don't necessarily think they are better photos. While they might not "make someone look moronic", which I don't agree this photo does (by all means, ask on the BNL talk page and see if people think he looks moronic), such photos might more annoyingly block parts of band members faces, feature poor angles on them, or otherwise just be less suitable for displaying the band. I never said you had to look for a new picture right away. I didn't say it was a priority. Obviously, finish your exams first. Just that, when you get the time, please check your files to see if you have another group photo.

I would think that he was doing what he's doing... pretending to golf for some reason... or else I'd just not know what he was doing... I don't know how I'd construe it as insulting him though, or making him look like a moron.

In reply to your last message, thank you for linking to that. I couldn't find it when I looked. And as I suspected, I never insinuated that I had a better image. Merely one that would do the job of the random images from 2005 scattered through the article in sections about 1988 and 1996 etc. which are completely out of place, IMO. Noone else seemed to have a problem with it, so I decided to just leave the many images up. In no way did I intend to suggest the image would be better suited for the lead image of the article, or that would replace the existing lead.
This reply is with respect to the fact that you pointed that link out which I asked you to point out. Now that I have replied, I am done talking to you. I have lost what little respect I already had for you and your arguments. I thought you were a bit stubborn with the citations but that you were trying to improve things in good faith, and were merely misinformed about policy. Then you started threatening to goto the admins over a disagreement as if they have the time to sit around and police your quarrels. After your last comment on the BNL talk page, I'm done responding to you. I will not reply to you on my talk page anymore. I may reply to you on article talk pages if I feel that not doing so will give you the impression that everyone agrees with you, but otherwise I probably won't. In any event, I will reply in the minimum response possible to fulfill wikipedia's policies for being an editor, which will likely require me to respond to you on article talk pages at least on occasion. I will crosspost this on my talk page in case you decide to blank my talk from your own talk page as you have done in the past, which is generally considered bad wikipedia form, but I don't care enough to whine to an admin about it. Just so you know

A majority of the articles you created(such as some of the bnl singles pages and kevin hearn's solo album page) have no sources at all, I put "no sources tags" and "original research tags" on the articles.

Also, the articles that you did not create but keep an eye on regularly such as the ones for "Plinko" and "Golden Road" and the other BNL singles pages all have the same problem so I put the 2 tags on all those pages as well.

I don't care if you reply to me or not(even though you should reply, this whole "I'm not talking to you" nonsense is silly) but all those tags MUST stay until you or someone else fixes them, those are the rules from Wikipedia. Have a good day. Writer1400 (talk) 21:20, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

WP:SYN

I appreciate that you did not revert me on Chris Simon. I just want to refer you again to WP:SYN, which establishes that using a source to draw a connection that the sources themselves do not draw is original research. Basically, if we don't have a source that says Simon is suspended, we can't say that he is just because the rules call for it. Beyond what our policies say, it's not really a safe assumption, either, since weird things happen with the rules all the time. I remember in the 2002 playoffs when the Isles played the Leafs, Gary Roberts got a major when he charged Kenny Jonsson, who was injured on the play. The rules specify that Roberts should've been ejected from the game (major penalty plus injury), but he was not. It would not only have been original research to have the article say that Roberts was ejected with a citation to the rulebook, it would've been wrong.
