AMCO[edit]

You're most certainly welcome. I came across it while deleting unsourced images, and I thought exactly the same thing you did.. "what is this crap?" ;) Cheers, Fang Aili talk 22:07, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the barnstar! =) --Fang Aili talk 22:07, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sports Personality[edit]

Hello there,

while admitting that AMCO sports personality may not be notable enough at the present moment in time to warrant an entry on wikipedia and also noting there seems to be one jokey comment regarding the likes of Wayne Rooney I will say this, just because you yourself have never heard of it and the fact that the retford times website does not have information on it does not mean "The events stated in the article have never happened". The event does indeed take place and has done 8 times since it's inaugral tournament in 1998, Perhaps you simply don't know as much about retford as you profess! It is not a hoax, it is a real event so please point out to me the "holes in this little hoax" that you mention, as i would be interested as to which elements of the event you believe to be made up.

Also, being a moderator/editor, should your edits not be done in a unbiased manner? for you and your "colleague" to describe an article as "a load of rubbish" and "crap" indicates a certain amount of subjectivity in your editing process. Also to describe something that others do in this way is surely a personal attack on them which you claim to be totally against.

Finally just out of curiosity - exactly how many people need to know about something to make it notable? 10? 100? 1,000? 1,000,000? also how many websites does the something need to be mentioned on?

Otherwise good job, i especially like page on smooth jazz - very interesting. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.34.159.45 (talk) 13:15, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there
Thanks for the message on my talk page.
The thing that gets me is that why would a bathroom retailer (AMCO) sponsor a sports event? If an event did take place that required the use of "the iconic Laughterton golf course, Kings Park and the second tier pubs n clubs of the town", then surely it would gather enough attention to be included as a notable event in the Retford Times or even the local BBC/ITV News, yet I have never seen it and a search on the Retford Times website news archive and the BBC News website brings up no articles. The fact that "only Retfordians have won the title despite numerous challenges from else where" makes me suspicious, if it is a open for all tournament, why are all the winners only from Retford? The last thing that made me suspicious is that there is no evidence of "a film crew followed the SPOTY crowd" during the "ghost" tournament of 2001 anywhere on the Internet. As mentioned on the articles deletion nomination, AMCO SPOTY brings up no Google hits.
I have seen the SPOTY website, and nicely presented and well done it is, but I still have my doubts upon its authencity, especially AMCO's involvement. What involvement do AMCO have in SPOTY?
As for the personal attack you suggest, I don't make any bad comments to anyone who either created or edited the article , the whole article just seems to be a hoax, but that's my viewpoint on it and until I can see verifiable evidence, for example a news article on a notable website like the BBC or the Retford Times or a video file on a notable site, again like the BBC or Sky Sports (not YouTube or any simliar website though, anyone could post anything on there).
As for notability, well I suppose the fact that content needs to be verified comes into effect on that matter too, as I said above, and as WP:VERIFY policy states, content and articles must be able to cite a reliable source, or have their content challenged or removed. Notability also depends on the area the article is about, but for a sporting event like SPOTY, I would suggest that the event in question should be referenced on a Google search from at least one or two reliable sources, and that the events attracts media attention, which from what I can tell, SPOTY does not. Someone else in their vote suggested that Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day, which should be a good read as to how people define what could make up an hoax and make an article non-notable.
The main point to gather over everything else is:
I hope that answers a few things from the post you made on my talk page. --tgheretford (talk) 17:07, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SPOTY & AMCO[edit]

No.1: Now SPOTY has been goin for some while even tho there may be some naming rights that the BBC might not be overly happy with but does it really matter as it isnt as tho SPOTY are trying to steal the BBC limelight. It should be clear that SPOTY rewards someone for being excellent at many sporting events not just 1.
No.2: SPOTY only competes in the best locations and recently it has seen it compete in the city of the 2012 Olympics.
No.3: Amco has had an affiliation with SPOTY since the second tournament, does it really matter how? Both parties are in it for sporting excellence with no money exchanging hands anywhere.
No.4: Amco isn't just a bathroom retailer. It specialises in Electrical and plumbing wholesale and also can compete with most electrical, plumbing, lighting and bathroom retail outlets (apart from pants B&Q, but you should always support locally owned and locally run businesses)
No.5: The Retford times has been given write-ups on the tournament in the past but failed to acknowledge the potential in the tournament so organisers decided to self promote.
No.6: The SPOTY tournament is an invitation only tournament with people from many nations competing. It will only get bigger and as we have seen Retford is just too small to handle such a prestigious tournament.
No.7: I have never heard of 102.2 Smooth FM does that make it a non existant entity in my eyes like you seem to disbelive SPOTY's existance?

Disclaimer: The Amco in discussion is Amco Distributors not AMCO Engineering.

I stand by my argument that the event is non notable, can't be verified (no Google hits) and until someone can provide me with some strong evidence that I still believe it is an hoax. I've no evidence (as I said to another person who sent me a similar message) from searching the Retford Times archive on-line for SPOTY.
As for 102.2 Smooth FM, you may have not heard of it, but a quick search on Google brings up a lot of hits from a number of sources, including the station itself, media websites and the Office of Communications, amongst others [1]. Therefore, we can safely assume that it has some notability value for inclusion in Wikipedia. Sadly there isn't anything of the kind for SPOTY that makes it notable for inclusion in Wikipedia. I stand by my comments in the original article for deletion nomination. All I can say is that if you are not happy with the decision, seek a deletion review. --tgheretford (talk) 23:30, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
