The Rape of Proserpina[edit]

Hi TLarish; just a query regarding your use of the phrase "symbolically depicted" in the first paragraph of the main article text. It's cited to Winner, 1998, in the context of pre-existing use of Proserpina as an image at/on the Villa facade. But what does it mean? Symbolic of what? After giving the basic information, Winner quotes Manilli, who described it in 1750: “Disopra si vede Plutone che havendo rapita Proserpina, sfonda co’l carro la terra. Tra molte figure si vede Pallade, che fà forza di ritener’ il carro; e Venere, che la sta ritenendo... .Nel primo ordine della terza parte della Facciata, è posto un basso rilievo che può dirsi che continui l’altro del rapimento di Proserpina”

My best translation:

"At the top we see Pluto, who, having already abducted Proserpina, breaks through the earth with his chariot. Among many figures one sees Pallas, who is holding back the chariot; and Venus, who [retains?] it... In the first [order?] of the third part of the facade, there is a low relief that can be said to show the other part of the rape of Proserpina".

Then Winner says that there's Ceres getting into a "dragon-drawn" chariot to search for Proserpina, and on one side is Proserpina, queen of the underworld, sitting mournfully with an apple in her hand. Underworld figures try to console her and offer her fruit.

Then it gets a little confusing. Again translating, WInner says that "Yes Manilli had dwelt no other interpretation of the ancient sarcophagi [I gather the depictions were on sarcophagi] as much as this one. The Elysian Fields are Proserpina's [spider?], and Ceres climbs on a chariot pulled by two serpents or dragons. The dragon is placed on the lower field of the Borghese coat of arms, while in the upper field is the eagle of Jupiter. The serpents of Ceres symbolize the Earth, the eagle the heavens."

So what I meant was that the significance of its commission may come from the symbols (including religious symbols). I've gotten rid of the word "symbolically".

What do you think of the article in general? I have to add a "conception" section (there's 5-10 major sources of inspiration for Bernini), and a description of the statue (things like the somewhat major details that there are two tears on Proserpina, or that Cerberus is connected to Pluto through a cloth). Any ideas for necessary work beyond that?

A bit early to say, really, and I seldom give advice to other editors. That's not a matter of personal policy, more a recognition that unless one has unwittingly pursued one's rabbit down a very deep or endless hole, the material should and will eventually start to speak for itself. GA nom?[edit]

For once, some advice. Don't rush the article. It's going well but get the language into the best shape you possibly can before you nominate. You've made some tense errors, quite early on (mixed tenses, past/present tenses in the same sentences). And what I suggested above - somewhat tongue in cheek - applies here. Simplify your prose, make it as easy as possible to read. Eliminate all ambiguity. Put the article to to bed for a couple of days; work on something else. When you come back to it, any faults will be much more apparent to you. Do away with any word that is not essential; rhetorical links such as "Additionally" are not needed. Nor "however". D'you know what? I've never put anything up for formal assessment; I've a few GAs but they were nominated by others. I don't know how one removes a nomination, but it'll have something to do with templates... I'll have a look. Review obviously involves feedback and that can be pretty intense, depending on the reviewer - not as intimidating as FA review, but still formidable. There's probably quite a backlog of GA nominations, and a shortage of capable, knowledgable GA reviewers. Some GA reviews have therefore not been of the highest quality, of late. That said, 'twas ever thus, and I wouldn't mind offering criticism and support on an informal basis. Haploidavey (talk) 21:07, 31 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
