I just wanted to remind you the importance of WP:BEFORE and accurate summaries for deletions. The rationale was "This seems to me to not be notable because I can't find discussion of it in the literature." but the source for Dual control (politics) clearly states " This was termed Dual Control (Anglo-French) over Egypt’s finances." It does seem like you didn't look all that hard to find that in the source. Additionally a simple google search would've shown [[7]] at Encyclopedia.com, [[8]] from Britannica.com, and there are many more examples. Mistakes happen and I'm sure there are plenty times you are spot on target just remember to do a couple searches first! Hell in a Bucket (talk) 02:18, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
  • Wales Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
  • Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
  • Kingdom of Prussia Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Chicago Barkeep49 with six GAs, United States Ceranthor, England Lee Vilenski, and Saskatchewan Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and Denmark MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The Anti-Vandalism + STiki Barnstar

Congratulations, StudiesWorld! You're receiving this barnstar because you recently crossed the 1,000 classification threshold using STiki. We thank you both for your contributions to Wikipedia at-large and your use of the tool. We hope you continue your ascent up the leaderboard and stay in touch at the talk page. Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like you to assume good faith while interacting with other editors. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Эlcobbola talk 16:00, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

@Elcobbola: I apologize for the error. In general, I try to treat all edits equally. When I saw the edit in STiki, it appeared to me to be vandalism. When I saw the fact that it was by an experienced user, I reconsidered it and thought that more likely than not it was vandalism. StudiesWorld (talk) 16:25, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
And did nothing to act on that reconsideration. Per Wikipedia:STiki, the tool you used, vandalism is an edit "blatantly unconstructive and intentional in its malice." The tool is employed by humans, rather than bots, implicitly so that actual judgment may be used. Perhaps you should not subordinate judgment to haste going forward. Эlcobbola talk 16:27, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Prep 5

Hi, thanks for helping out with the hook promotions at DYK. I'd just like to note a few details that we try to follow while building prep sets.

First, we look at the previous few image sets to see what kinds of images are running. The previous sets depicted person-nature-building-building. We are due for another person image now. Moreover, the image you chose is very dark and uninteresting at thumbnail size. Even though the nominator supplied it, we don't need to use it if it's not interesting. Additionally, the hook itself is not all that hooky either. Lead hooks and images really should be special.

The three middle hooks are all sports hooks. We try to aim for a balance in the set; one sports hook is enough. In that same spirit, you have a sports car crash, an airplane crash, and a hook talking about capital punishment. I admit it's not easy building sets, but with more practice you'll surely get the hang of it.

So... would you like me to move around some of these hooks to other sets? I'm already removing the image and moving that hook somewhere else. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer on my talk page. Best, Yoninah (talk) 18:44, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

@Yoninah: - Thanks for the feedback. I'd appreciate if you could fix it. I'll take a look at how you change it and try to learn from it. I do want to get more involved in DYK and will try to do better in the future. StudiesWorld (talk) 22:34, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

@TheBullHorde: - Unfortunately not, we need to see independent, reliable sources. I don't think that at this time, the newspaper is notable. Facto Post – Issue 24 – 17 May 2019
Text mining display of noun phrases from the US Presidential Election 2012

Semantic Web and TDM – a ContentMine view

Two dozen issues, and this may be the last, a valediction at least for a while.

It's time for a two-year summation of ContentMine projects involving TDM (text and data mining).

Wikidata and now Structured Data on Commons represent the overlap of Wikimedia with the Semantic Web. This common ground is helping to convert an engineering concept into a movement. TDM generally has little enough connection with the Semantic Web, being instead in the orbit of machine learning which is no respecter of the semantic. Don't break a taboo by asking bots "and what do you mean by that?"

The ScienceSource project innovates in TDM, by storing its text mining results in a Wikibase site. It strives for compliance of its fact mining, on drug treatments of diseases, with an automated form of the relevant Wikipedia referencing guideline MEDRS. Where WikiFactMine set up an API for reuse of its results, ScienceSource has a SPARQL query service, with look-and-feel exactly that of Wikidata's at query.wikidata.org. It also now has a custom front end, and its content can be federated, in other words used in data mashups: it is one of over 50 sites that can federate with Wikidata.

The human factor comes to bear through the front end, which combines a link to the HTML version of a paper, text mining results organised in drug and disease columns, and a SPARQL display of nearby drug and disease terms. Much software to develop and explain, so little time! Rather than telling the tale, Facto Post brings you ScienceSource links, starting from the how-to video, lower right.

ScienceSourceReview, introductory video: but you need run it from the original upload file on Commons
Links for participation

The review tool requires a log in on sciencesource.wmflabs.org, and an OAuth permission (bottom of a review page) to operate. It can be used in simple and more advanced workflows. Examples of queries for the latter are at d:Wikidata_talk:ScienceSource project/Queries#SS_disease_list and d:Wikidata_talk:ScienceSource_project/Queries#NDF-RT issue.

Please be aware that this is a research project in development, and may have outages for planned maintenance. That will apply for the next few days, at least. The ScienceSource wiki main page carries information on practical matters. Email is not enabled on the wiki: use site mail here to Charles Matthews in case of difficulty, or if you need support. Further explanatory videos will be put into commons:Category:ContentMine videos.

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello StudiesWorld,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Nancy Pelosi

I see you passed Nancy Pelosi without any response to my comment. Am I correct to assume you disagreed with all of it? Knope7 (talk) 13:52, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

@Knope7: - No, not at all. I agree that that is a major weak point of the article. However, I interpreted it as being in the gap between the "main aspects" requirement of GA and the "comprehensiveness" requirement of FA, especially given that those periods were relatively less notable periods of her life. I sincerely apologize for not responding to your comment on the GA page and before closing the review, as your comment most definitely was deserving of a reply. Do you think that this was significant enough to warrant failure or further revision prior to GA? StudiesWorld (talk) 14:02, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for the response. I know there is a wide spectrum for how the criteria is interpreted and I appreciate you explaining your thought process here. I agree main aspects should be something less than comprehensiveness, but to me skipping over so much time doesn't feel like its addressing the main aspects. It looks like a variety of editors have focused on recent and polarizing events, which is a frequent problem in articles like these although your point that she is more notable in recent years is well taken. The lack of detail early in the article has also caused a lot of one sentence paragraphs and disconnected thoughts which go to the quality of the prose and compliance with the manual of style. I probably should have expressed this more clearly before the article was passed. If I decide I think the problems are serious enough, I would probably do a community reassessment. I don't think that's in the cards now. Knope7 (talk) 01:25, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
@Knope7: Okay, that makes sense. I hope that at some point someone uses one of her many biographies to improve the article towards FA status, but we'll see. I would imagine that the biographies do a better job of covering her early life. StudiesWorld (talk) 01:27, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC seeks to clarify whether WP:OUTING should include information on just the English Wikipedia or any Wikimedia project.
  • An RfC on WT:RfA concluded that Requests for adminship and bureaucratship are discussions seeking to build consensus.
  • An RfC proposal to make the templates for discussion (TfD) process more like the requested moves (RM) process, i.e. "as a clearinghouse of template discussions", was closed as successful.

Technical news

  • The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.
  • Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.
