Mayflower (1886)

Hi! I think you may have added the clean-up to Mayflower (1886). I think the title should be USS Mayflower II - 1896 or something like that but, being new to Wiki, I don't know how to change it or have it changed. Do you? I opened a discussion at Talk:Mayflower (1886) which sheds some light on this. Thanks! I would do something more myself but don't know the clean-up system well enough. Do you know who to direct a renaming request to? Should the title not be "USS Mayflower II - 1896". or somesuch thing? I find reference to such a ship built in 1896 (in Scotland) and decommisioned in 1904 to use as a presidential yacht for President Theodore Roosevelt. It had quite a history that would be a good article if that is the ship referenced in this article. I am uncertain how to proceed...(fairly new to wiki). I think the writer meant the above ship.

You can easily change the title for almost any article by using the "move" tab near the top of the page. To pick the correct title for this article, I think you'll need to read Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ships), and figure out whether or not a simple title like "USS Mayflower II" is too ambiguous (so I think the recommendation is to use the hull number as the next recourse). The page Mayflower (disambiguation) should have links to all the articles on ships named Mayflower. If you create a new one, change an existing title, or discover any new ones, you should update this list. When there are many articles with similar titles, we put links from each of the articles back to the disambiguation page. There are some handy templates for this purpose at Wikipedia:Template_messages/General#Disambiguation. (I've just added one to Mayflower (1886).) It looks like we have yet to create articles for several of the Mayflowers, so you have a pretty blank slate to add whatever content you think is appropriate. Oh, and feel free to remove the {{cleanup-date}} tag once you think the article in reasonable shape. Hi, I noticed you made some recent edits to List of United States Navy ships, M with regards to this Mayflower ship. Well in doing so, you peeked my curiousity. And I went ahead and made a page for it, USS Mayflower (PY-1). If you are looking for more information on a ship that has been in the US Navy (at least prior to 1970s) I suggest you look at http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/ Which is the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships. There is alot of information there, and it is all public domain, so no worrying about copyrights. The other thing I wanted to let you know about is that I took your article Mayflower (1886) and redirected it to this new one I made. As for the article title, its usually preferable to use something that indicates what the individual was notable for...Dates are therefore hardly ever the best disambiguation term for articles on people. The DoCB lists have them only because these names were taken directly from a dump of the DoCB article database I created and switched to wikipedia format. WP:BIO

Hi Stormbay, I recently came across your article on Thomas-Jacques Taschereau and I have to say I didn't immediately see the importance of the subject asserted in the article. A google search showed just 68 unique hits [1] which could indicate the subject is not encylopedic. It might be an idea to incorporate more information (the biographical link seems to contain lots) and make the notability of the subject clearer in the beginning of the piece. Hopefully this and other biographical articles you have created are or can be brought in line with WP:BIO, you're clearly an enthusiastic editor which is always great to see. By Carol Sanders A provincial court judge will rule next month on whether the Rural Municipality of Ellice can expropriate the lush Assiniboine River valley land where riverboats used to stop with supplies for trails that opened the West.

"We've talked about it, talked about it for 20 years," said Reeve George Boucher.

The bilingual RM nestled near the Saskatchewan border has wanted to develop the storied site of Fort Ellice on the Assiniboine River and turn it into a tourist attraction.

"The riverboats used to come up the river and unload their cargos there in Fort Ellice." From there, the goods would be shipped overland up the Carlton and Pelly trails.

It's only in the last five years that the municipality really started pushing to get the site, have it designated as historic, then develop its tourism and economic-development potential, said Boucher.

He said the owners of the 288-acre property haven't been willing to negotiate a deal. He said the province has tried five times to intercede but hasn't been able to get a response. "Now there's just a big sign that says 'no trespassing,'" Boucher said.

Owner Arthur Fouillard would be willing to part with 100 acres, not 288, said his son, Marcel Fouillard. He said the municipality has taken an all-or-nothing approach to acquiring his 85-year-old father's pasture land just south of St. Lazare.

"They showed up one day and wanted Dad to donate land. Then, last April, they served us with an expropriation notice. We had no time to consider their offer."

Marcel Fouillard said community groups have been using his dad's land for sports days and ball games and the senior has never received so much as a thank-you note.

They've offered to sell 100 acres that include some graves at Fort Ellice and a stone cairn, he said. A mediator backed that plan but the municipality rejected it, Fouillard said.

Boucher said the RM has big plans for the 288 acres and budgeted $10,000 a year for the next five years to develop the site and expects other levels of government to provide matching funds.

Fort Ellice was owned by the Hudson's Bay Co. and provided essential products for the settlers of the area. The Assiniboine River served as the principal transportation route. "It was an RCMP depot at the time of Prohibition," said Boucher.

The fort settled by Scottish people became obsolete when the railway pushed west, and the rail town of St. Lazare flourished with an influx of francophones, Boucher said.

"So many people like historic sites... Once we get it, we'll have tourism like you wouldn't believe." A provincial court judge in Winnipeg is expected to rule April 11 on the RM's plan to expropriate the land.

Boucher said the picturesque site is nestled in the Qu'Appelle Valley area and populated with bald eagles.

"It's one of the most scenic spots you'd ever want to see."

RMs etc

I myself am unsure about the best way to disambiguate communities from RMs. The measures that I took were so that no links to communities were linking to RMs of the same name and vice-versa. I did not intend them to be the end all and be all of naming RMs/communities, but rather a stop gap measure to disambiguate that could be changed later on by someone who had more knowledge of the area than myself. So I am very open to discussion on the best way to do it and then we can do whatever moves/link changes that need to be done to make all of the relevant articles consistent with that system. Whoever created List of rural municipalities in Manitoba decided to link all the RMs in the form "<name of RM>, Manitoba". Now this leads to problems because there are also communities with the same name as an RM and communities are also linked in the form "<name of community>, Manitoba". So what I had done was to append "(rural municipality)" to any link for RMs that conflicted with communities. Almost all of the cases was of existed community articles and links on the "List of rural municipalities in Manitoba" pointing to them, but there was one or two with the other way around: an existed RM page with a conflicted community name that either didn't exist or was in some other location (I think it was Gimli and/or Dauphin).
So this leaves two systems: name both RMs and communities by "<name>, Manitoba" and disambiguate when necessary by adding "(rural municipality)" or "(town)" (village, etc) to the name. Or name communities by "<name>, Manitoba" and name RMs by "Rural Municipalty of <name>". One potential problem with the later system is that there could be RMs in different provinces with the same name.
This is a wider issue then just Manitoba, maybe the editors of other provinces have already come to a solution, or perhaps they should be invovled in the discussion. Qutezuce 03:47, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
I really despise naming any article "Rural Municipality of....". The problem is, I want to keep CSD's in Canada standardized. This means the name of the CSD followed by the province. Having "rural municipality of" is a tad redundant. To disambiguate, put rural municipality in brackets. Now, when a community by the same name as an RM is in a different RM, I would recommend having a main dab article with links to either entity. Eg. Clanwilliam, Manitoba (community) and Clanwilliam, Manitoba (rural municipality). Let's keep some consistency :) --curling rock Earl Andrew - talk 05:40, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Name it what it is

Kamouraska Regional County Municipality, Quebec is an example of a naming convention in the PQ. What is wrong with that type of naming? In my opinion, nothing. (perhaps a little cumbersome, but, accurate). Stormbay 22:09, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Bio-stub

Hi Stormbay. You are exactly right. If correctly formed, a stub template will always be shown as one of the items in the category it "controls". Sometimes WP:WSS (the stub sorters) place the template as the first item in the category to make everything look a bit prettier. I've done that now. The former layout of the stub template was not in line with WP:STUB, but this is what the template was supposed to have looked like. Unfortunately a lot of stub templates become messed up because people don't follow WP:STUB so cleanup is a pretty common task as a stub sorter. DOCB categorization

Hi...just a couple of notes about the categorization of your DOCB articles:

  1. We're trying to keep Category:Canadian people itself empty of individual articles; everybody should be filed in one or more of its subcategories instead of directly in the parent. So could you please use appropriate subcategories, such as Category:Canadian businesspeople, Category:Canadian historical figures, etc., instead of directly applying "Canadian people"?
  2. Where the birth and death dates are known, could you add "(YEAR) births" and "(YEAR) deaths" as categories as well? If either or both isn't known, you should also add Category:Year of birth unknown and/or Category:Year of death unknown.

He was actually a member of the Legislative Council, not the Legislative Assembly. I've got that list on my "to do" list. There weren't ridings for the council and, at that time, people were appointed, sometimes until they died. Legislative Council of Lower Canada

The members of the Legislative Council for Lower Canada, which was created by the Constitutional Act of 1791, were first appointed in 1792. Before that, there was a Legislative Council for the Province of Quebec (1763-1791), so he was probably a member of that earlier council and then later named to its successor. --Big_iron 21:49, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

I am inclined to leave it alone for the moment. There is another DoCB bio [4] (his father-in-law) where he appears as Edward Greive and his biography at the Assemblée nationale du Québec [5] also spells his surname Greive. Fort Richelieu

There's no way to nominate a page on another langwiki for translation here; the translation process here pertains only when an article gets incorrectly posted to en: in its original language. The only real way to have an article from another Wikipedia translated here is to either do it yourself, if you can, or, if you don't know enough French to take it on yourself, to suggest it to someone (like me) who might be able to take it on. Re:Tag removal

As noted in edit history, I translated this article from pl wiki. It is unreferenced, but I should have added a note on the source especially after seeing the tag - alas, it was after midnight and I didn't think clearly (fixed now). Which one is this?

There was an appointed Legislative Council for the Province of Quebec (1763-1791) established by the Quebec Act. There was no elected assembly. This was all changed in 1791. French spellings

I generally try to spell French names correctly. The official policy on this subject is Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(use_English). French accents are part of the Latin alphabet but the policy states that the use of accents is a disputed point, with most favouring their use but no current consensus. So, as far as I can tell, there also isn't any policy about removing accents from article titles. Another factor might be what spelling is most commonly used to refer to that person.

I would not treat such a change as vandalism; it is best to start with the assumption that the person had good intentions. I noticed that some existing redirects were not updated so that there is now a double redirect for Michel Bégon de la Picardière. That suggests that the person who moved this article might be inexperienced. Because the article has been moved, it can still be found by someone searching for that person using either Michel Bégon or Michel Begon. If you wish to pursue this issue, you could start by contacting the person who moved this article to see why they feel that the other spelling would be preferred.

By the way, it is my understanding that currently the sorting for categories does not deal properly with accented characters, so I use the unaccented form for category names, for example [[Category:1667 births|Begon, Michel]]. Re: Whinney Banks

Hi Stormbay. The main reason I removed the speedy is because there is no speedy criterion for removing settlements on the basis of lack of notability. Some areas are indeed so so small/non-notable that they are deleted (usually through AfD) or merged into larger areas. I don't think there are any general guidelines, but the main question is usually whether it is possible to get enough material to write an article on the subject. Whinney Banks does seem less significant to me now than when I first looked at it, and there may be an argument for deletion/merging, but I think it would be good to get some local input. It is described as an area within a ward, but wards have varying significance from city to city, and Whinney Banks has been listed as a suburb at Middlesbrough for quite some time, while the ward isn't. Copyright maintenance

With regards to User:CocoaBeachBoy's cut-and-pasted articles, I did prod most of the military bios he created yesterday, as I took them to be non-notable outside the context of the US military. Some were blatant copyvios, and I deleted those on sight. However, I believe that it is WP's policy to accept some copy-and-paste jobs that originated from the public domain, such as US government (military) sites. (See WP:COPY#U.S._government_photographs.) Turtle Mountain is a reputable national company that manages two successful brands, and the company's dairy free ice cream products can be found in grocery stores across the country, including Safeway and Albertsons. I was also just in a Wal-Mart in Seattle last weekend and saw some of their products. Why is Turtle Mountain not considered notable of a wikipedia page to you?

Please see the wikipedia entry for "Tofutti", a competing brand of soy-based ice cream. Tofutti has had its own page up for months, and Turtle Mountain is a larger company with wider national distribution than Tofutti.

I do not think that Visiting Scholar fits any of the speedy deletion criteria because it is a page about a concept, not a specific person or group of people. Therefore WP:CSD#A7 does not apply. Thanks for your note. The above is my standard message when i remove a speedy tag. The comments about not re-adding the speedy are intentionally made light "I request that you consider not re-tagging". I have encountered several cases where a user did re-tag after a tag had been removed, and so i use this msg when I remove tags from an editor I haven't personally interacted with before. If I know the editor, i normally don't include the re-tagging bit. I use this msg quite a lot while patrolling the category of pages tagged for speedy delete. Can you suggest improved wording that would indicate that tags should not be re-added without discussion to those who may not realize this, without offending those who would never do anything of the sort, given that there is no easy way to tell the two apart in advance. I see that you have put a warning about the need for sources on the page List of shipwrecks in 1966. The reason why there are no sources listed is that all of the information displayed on the page is sourced from other wikipedia article pages, which is where the source information is listed.

Also why have you put a nobility warning on the page as the main wikipedia article SS Heraklion doesn't have any problems concerning notiblity, the reason why I have included it on the page about shipwrecks in 1966 is because many people died in the disaster and would consider it a very notable incident.

Hey There

Those articles you mentioned are definitely CSD material, they fit A7 perfectly, there's no assertion of notability whatsoever on any one of them. Its funny, there's been a recent influx of articles about non-notable shopping centers, I tagged a bunch that were listed on AfD for Speedy Deletion and they were all gone within five minutes. I say tag them all {{db-corp}}, as well as any other mall articles you come across that only list the stores they contain. In general, malls and shopping centers are typically not notable unless they've received substantial non-trivial press coverage or they're Mall of America or something like that. If you lose track of those links, the {{fmq}} and {{amq}} templates — which should be on all American radio stations — link there, so another alternative would be to add {{fmq|WCSD}} to the article, save and then click on the link to see what comes up. Okuno Ryu

Wikisophically, I am an inclusionist - I would prefer that a marginal article remain so that someone could improve it. I removed Okuno Ryu from the karate page because it was decided a year ago on the talk page not to list all karate styles in the karate article. There were too many. I would suggest that you try adding Okuno Ryu to the Karate kata article.

The Okuno Ryu article itself is too general: most styles of karate train kata, most if not all have more than two kata, many styles have diverse techniques. For example, it is interesting that beginners are taught rolls, break falls: why? What attacks are trained that require these techniques for beginners? Under whom did Bernard Collins ( both titles should be removed to meet Wiki standards) study? And lastly, the Okuno Ryu article really needs more good quality references - it will live or die on that point alone.

multiple incorrect speedies

  1. Neither computer programs nor books nor schools can be speedied as non notable, only the types of articles indicated at WP:CSD A7: people, groups, bands, web content, companies.
  2. People who are asserted to be presidents of significant companies do not fall under speedy, because such is an assertion of notability. see WP:CSD A7.

If you question notability , use prod or afd. speedy is deliberately restricted in its application. There is considerable sentiment for removing speedy a7 altogether, which would be a shame, because so many articles do fall under it. I'd hate to lose it--my log shows I delete over a dozen articles a day-- but overuse of it does cause people to keep suggesting just that. DGG (talk) 21:24, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

I did not mean this as a general reflection on your editing or patrolling--far from it. I'd never blame anyone for not agreeing with me. But you'll find that a number of other admins are trying to at least get A7 a little more in order--and some decline speedies I would have deleted. I think it's good to at least keep to the specified types of articles, which is fairly clear-cut--what amounts to a assertion of notability is admittedly subjective, & it sometimes depends on recognizing the organization or whatever. For schools and books, I find prod usually works very well. Less than one in ten gets contested. I think alls well between us, and if I implied otherwise I apologize. prod notifications

I know it is not strictly required that your notify the author of an article when PROding it, but it is considered polite. it seems to me that it increases the chance of finding sources for notability or fixing the other problems. Perhaps it will soon actually be required, but at present, i can only urge you to show this degree of consideration & concern for improving the encyclopedia. The prod tag makes it semi-automatic.
