Re: deleted Image:Salute scroll.jpg

Per your rationale for deleting this image, "‎ (I7: Invalid justification given for non-free image: invalid tag - says it is a CD cover and clearly is not)," I have uploaded a photo

File:Salute scroll B.jpg
CD cover

to validate the original fair use information saying it was a CD cover. If this meets with you approval, you can delete this photo (which I uploaded for your information only) and replace the original one. Thanks for you help. Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 20:48, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

I have restored the image but it may be marked for deletion again later for failing to comply with WP:NFCC items 1, 3a, 8 and 10c. Stifle (talk) 14:58, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Re: deleted image:Runway shot

Your reason for deleting this image was‎ (I7: Invalid justification given for non-free image: fails NFCC8, does not add anything to readers' understanding of the article)

Please note the leading section (top) of this article has this in paragraph 3:

"His specialty was building stage runways extending out into the audience. He would run up and down the runway and across the stage, "teasing, cajoling, and thrilling the audience," often stopping to sing to individual members, all the while the "perspiration would be pouring from his face, and the entire audience would get caught up in the ectasy of his performance."

As you can see, this image - the only one like it in the article - and a basic screen-shot, does add to the article's understanding. That doesn't mean everyone will get the same benefit from it, and some may even miss the purpose entirely.

Yet this image was tagged for speedy deletion and was even deleted without the 48-hour grace period and without the normal 7-day period on most fair use images. Furthermore, a "hangon" tag was added so that I could have time to write out a dispute, as per dispute guidelines, which was either unseen or ignored. Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 21:46, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

I don't agree with your assessment on this one. Note that User:Melesse tagged the image with the tag that indicated it had already been tagged for 48 hours. Your issue that the deletion was too fast doesn't hold water - you added the {{hangon}} tag 15 minutes after the page was tagged for deletion, and I deleted it over 8 hours after that. You therefore had 8 hours to write a reason why the image shouldn't be deleted.
Screenshots from films can only be used for critical commentary on the film and its contents (see the tag) and can't be used in the article of a person who happens to be in the movie. Stifle (talk) 15:15, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Deletion review notice for deleted images

==Deletion review for Image:Jazz Singer premier.jpg==

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Image:Jazz Singer premier.jpg. Since you closed the deletion discussion for this article, speedy-deleted it, or were otherwise interested in the article, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 22:30, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

It appears this image was deleted improperly:

  • No warning tag was placed, no grace period provided - an instant deletion without recourse
  • No opportunity to fix whatever problem might have been there;
  • Your statement "no license tag" was incorrect as this image has been posted for months and had a fully acceptable fair-use rationale.
  • This Deletion Review appears necessary since you have also deleted a number of other images and have not responded to my discussions.Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 22:30, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
As you later noticed, I was away and couldn't respond to your messages in time.
I have closed off the deletion review heading titled Al Jolson because that article has not been deleted. If you want to open a deletion review about some specific image or images, you can feel free.
Fair use images require an image tag (from WP:ICT/FU) as well as a rationale. One or the other alone is not enough.
I hope I can answer any further questions about image deletions here; as you know, you can open deletion reviews about specific images if you wish. However, all the non-free images you chose to add really aren't sustainable as GRBerry told you in the deletion review. Stifle (talk) 15:18, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Old PUI

Would you mind explaining how the small and incidental logos in the screen-shot make the image discussed here unfree? I'm not seeing how it is any different than a small, copyrighted Nike logo in the larger context of Tiger Woods's shirt, for example. It is all about what you are trying to illustrate. Thanks, IronGargoyle (talk) 22:54, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

It would need to be tagged with an appropriate fair use tag, I think. And since the image was orphaned, it couldn't be used in fair use anyway. But it might be worth opening a discussion about this at WP:MCQ. Stifle (talk) 15:20, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Steve Macias (theologian)

Hello. I noticed that recently created article Steve Macias (theologian) is named similar to another article Steve Macias Jr. that was recently deleted. Is this a case of recreation of deleted material? The article appears to be an autobiography and may not meet notability criteria. -- Tcncv (talk) 03:56, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks - it is now deleted. However, in future, please tag pages for deletion in the usual way, as this will result in the page being deleted faster. You can always put a comment on the talk page or elsewhere to explain further. Stifle (talk) 15:24, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. I had already flagged the article for PROD and was not sure if it met CSD. The principal editor of the article removed the PROD notice. A google search led me to the previously deleted article, but I had no way to determine if the content was substantially the same. That's why I contacted you, since you had deleted the prior article. Should I have taken a different approach? Should I restore a deleted PROD notice? Thanks. -- Tcncv (talk) 20:00, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
You can't restore a deleted PROD notice. Pages which are similar to other pages that have been speedy-deleted cannot be deleted under CSD:G4 — they must meet the criteria for speedy deletion themselves. So you could have just tagged it as {{nn-bio}}. Stifle (talk) 09:13, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi: Smith Jones and I have been working, improving, and referencing extensively the life story of Alan Cabal, to the point where we (at least I) believe we have "won" (you can see here User:Smith Jones/Alan Cabal (journalist)). So can you reinstate the article, make it exist again? Is this you who would do this? Or do I just go ahead and do it. What's the policy here? Afterward, I believe I will simply include a single edit summary reading something like "improvement" rather than the dozens of dinky little edits we've made, unless in fact a move operation is the thing to do? If you believe we have not yet "won" then I guess we have to have it out once again in a forum somewhere? Sincerely, Manhattan Samurai (talk) 15:48, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

You seem to have done this already, which is fine. Is there anything else you need me to do? Stifle (talk) 09:15, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Would it be possible to undelete the talk page? I would like to add the AfDs to an article history page. Best, Manhattan Samurai (talk) 18:57, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Auto hide text on post of Copyvio template

There has been discussion at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#Auto hide text on post of template, it has been advertised fairly widely with little conversation generated. We have magic now to let us automatically blank the suspected copyvio when the template is posted. We have instituted the change on {{copyvio}}, The question has come up on why directions for speedy where changed to not delete when posting what is now {{Db-g12}}. It looks like you changed it to "You do not need to blank the page in this instance", which later morphed to "You should not blank the page in this instance". Please stop in at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#Db-g12/test hide copyvio. If there is a good reason to not blank suspect copyvio prior to speedy we have not found a record of it. SELEX Communications page

Hi Stifle,
Not sure if you saw the message I left you on Friday addressing issues such as username etc?

Regarding our proposed WIKI entry.
Thanks for your helpful advice. We now understand your editorial parameters better and have redrafted the entry, which should now better comply with your guidelines.
Can you please either: re-enable the page to allow me to make this article live orget back to me with your comments on this entry, if it still does not comply.
Regards,
James Bryant

SELEXCommunications (talk) 11:01, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

The article draft you left on my talk page, while less of an advert, still does not address how your company is notable (see some criteria for notability), nor does it provide citations from reliable, independent sources. I have moved the draft to User:SELEXCommunications/draft where you can work on it further. Please also see the manual of style. Stifle (talk) 11:10, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Going oveboard on your deletions today

Please stop. Your job is to ASSIST with Wikpedia, not vandalize it by deleting everything in sight. If you have some issue with articles that are under construction related to scientists whose PROJECT is listed on the discussion, please let me know. I only create articles with proper CITING and REFERENCEs.

I expect all pages that were create by me today to be UNDELETED and put back ASAP please. BMW(drive) 16:31, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Please note that the PRIMARY article in question that you delete had more references (added by me) that would lead any reader to better understand this person's importance and role in the post-global warming geology. BMW(drive) 16:47, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Still waiting ... if you're going to DELETE an article within 20 minutes of creation, you should be available for at least an additional 20 minutes after to reply to issues. Thanks BMW(drive) 17:22, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Please do not accuse me of vandalism. Stifle (talk) 18:49, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Then, um ... don't do it? I applaud most of your efforts, I look forward to your immediate undoing of your errors, and we'll all go on our merry way :) BMW(drive) 18:53, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
You might like to have a look at WP:VAND for what vandalism is: "Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content made in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia". This wasn't vandalism. I don't think my deletion was in error, but the deletion review will finally decide that. Stifle (talk) 18:57, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I had a word with him/her and tried to suggest she used references and so on, and other comments of mine which you can see either on her talk page or my archive. Then she left from 28 June- 11 July and I thought she had given up. Things have been very frantic for me the last few days, so forgive me not spotting that she is active again. Thank you for letting me know- I'll take a look and see if I can help in any way.:) Sticky Parkin 14:38, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I've now had another word with her on her talk page. I wouldn't say she is quite a Single Purpose Account though, she just is very keen on the article, but on the other hand if it's deleted I hope she'll continue with the edits she's made (of which there are some) or plans to make on other subjects and articles. aap tv

Hi just want to know why the aap tv article was deleted today? Ive been in touch with them guys for quite some time now gathering information etc on the channel n was about to add all this info. The majority of the pakistanis living in the uk today are from the mirpur disitrict of azad kashmir & speak pahari/pothwari & this channel was for them. I think u should delete all the other pakistani channel articles as they aint imporant too. This is just unreal!

Wow. These are hard decisions to make.-Manhattan Samurai (talk) 23:48, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

AAP TV was deleted under criterion 7 (under Articles) of our criteria for speedy deletion because it appeared to be an article about a company which didn't indicate why it was important or significant. Please see WP:CORP for details of what might show notability. If you think that these criteria are met, please explain which one and provide citations from reliable sources to back up your claim, and I will consider undeleting it.
You may alternatively file a deletion review request. Stifle (talk) 08:31, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Editing

Stilfe, this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ray_Joseph_Cormier has been in the RFCbio list for some time with no editors making any contributions at all. The raw material in the history and in other user talk fits right in with your personal interests on your user page if I read them correctly. If you find the time and interest as an editor, not an Administrator, would you please examine the information and see if any of it can be restored to the article in an encyclopedic language?. Seeing it is an article on me, I have recused myself from editing it, having to depend on others. Many thanks. Peace DoDaCanaDa (talk) 00:12, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

I would have no interest whatsoever in this article. Don't take that personally — I am sure you are very notable, noble, and interesting, but I don't find anything in the article that I would be a significant help with. Sorry. Stifle (talk) 08:30, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
  • I appreciate your brutal frankness. The article itself is not only bare boned, it seems to me down to the marrow itself. The 95% of the information removed to the dustbin of history has peacock terms and may not be 100% neutral, but if it is a biography, some of that factual information of the person's life could be re-worked and restored to the article, I hope. Dear Admin,

I was working on this article ("Rule Oriented Architecture") but did not have sufficient time to complete it and add sufficient context to it. However, I cannot find my own copy of the content. Can you send me a copy of the deleted page so I can complete it and reapply it for publication on the Wikipedia?

SELEX Communications

Hi Stifle, Thankyou for your assistance recently with regards to improving my SELEX Communications WIKI entry. You placed my article in a holding area for me to edit, but unfortunately someone else has locked my account due to the username.

I've since created a new account (which I'm now using) but obviously can't get to my original page to continue refining it.

....and I can't create a new SELEX page since the page has been locked.

Can you tell me how to access the original page so that I can continue working on it, or alternatively just unblock the SELEX entry so that I may work on it there.

Image:Julian sprung 2008 Drs. foster smith frag swap.jpg was deleted under the criteria for speedy deletion because the image description indicated that only Wikipedia has permission to use the image. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, since explicit permission to use it was given, this is in fact not the case. [1] [2] Please do not upload any more files with this restriction on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with a free license, which allows anyone to use it. Correct photo tag

Dear Stifle, Help. Can you please let me know the correct WikiCommons tag for this web source. It is by S. Hayter from this source If you click on the bottom link called 'Information' and then scroll to the bottom of the next web page which appears, there is a clear statement by Hayter saying "All images, unless otherwise stated, are copyright free for non-commercial use. An acknowledgment, including this web site (www.ancient-egypt.co.uk), must be included if they are used in any publication, document or web site."

  • So, while the images from ancient-egypt.co.uk are CF free, I can't use Wikipedia's CF free tag since it is for unrestricted use including commercial ones--something which Hayter forbids. In this case, what tag do you recommend? I'm just lost. If it is a {{pd-XX}} tag, please let me known what I should type in the XX section. With kind Regards, Fabian from Canada Leoboudv (talk) 10:50, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Those image can't be used at all on Wikipedia or Commons. "Non-commercial use only" is not considered free enough, by order of Jimbo Wales. [3]
In future may I suggest asking questions relating to image copyright at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions as you will get a quicker reply there? Stifle (talk) 12:54, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Stifle, excuse me for butting in, I just happened to see this discussion here. I must agree with the user (User:Luby, I suppose?): we really do these kinds of grammar articles with detailed morphological paradigm tables. We have them for many languages, typically united under a single "X'ian grammar" article, though occasionally also factored out into subarticles. Luby has also created Serbian nouns and Serbian conjugation as subarticles of Serbian grammar. These are prima facie legitimate articles, given our precedents, and I really can't see how they fall under any of the CSD. Would you reconsider and undelete? I'd personally favour subsequent merging into Serbian grammar, possibly cutting down a little bit on the tables, I'd have to work that out with the author. (BTW, thanks for clarifying the other thing, about the DRV.) Fut.Perf. 09:02, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
I think I could agree with that one. Articles on Fooian nouns and Fooian adjectives don't belong in Wikipedia, but I think Fooian grammar might. I've restored the page and redirected it to Serbian grammar. Stifle (talk) 09:39, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
