Do not ever insult me again without checking your facts out [1]! You may enjoy the odd pleasures of being an Admin, other people enjoy contributing to the project. If accurate research is beyond you, then stick to vandal patrol, or whatever it is inexperienced admins do. Giano (talk) 18:47, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Copyright free images

Do you know what tag I should attach to an image if I access it from this site at egyptarchive.co.uk: [2]? The author states explicitly they are copyright free. I checked the 'index' section and he has an impressive collection of images. One was used for king Neferirkare Kakai here: [3] I have never uploaded an image onto Wikicommons and this is a unique case. How many sites say they feature copyright free images? Not many, I suppose.

BTW, I did notify Mr. Bodsworth that I used his image for pharaoh Neferirkare Kakai. The previous image of this king's pyramid was badly marred by the presence of a person in the picture. Any help you can give is appreciated on approaching copyright feee images. Thank You, Leoboudv (talk) 05:16, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your message. You may find you get a quicker response in future to questions like this at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.
You can use {{PD-release}} and place a link to that contact page on the image description page. Stifle (talk) 22:05, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

response to Stifle message re: deletion review

Oh, sorry about the missing signature thingie, but that typewriter key does NOT work on my computer, trying to have it fixed.

Anyway, mission accomplished, I scammed those other Wiki editors into assuring my unsigned music artists listings will never be challenged nor removed again, no matter who objects. They are now completely untouchable. lol lol The secret is this: you only need object strongly, "loudly," and hysterically to a Wiki editor's ruling and they always unite together to do the exact opposite of your objection. lol lol lol I learned that lesson a long time ago and, of course, applied it ever since. The best thing is this: once Wiki editors make any formal dispute ruling they never revoke it either lol lol lol When it comes to understanding reverse psychology, well, sweetie, that was my major in college and I am THE expert lol lol lol And that's how you make the big $$$$ in the music biz, my darling---- it's called big time SMARTS, and I got them and then some, that's why my clients love me. lol lol

!MusicBizLady —Preceding comment was added at 10:41, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

As an alternative to the signature button you can type ~~~~.
Regarding the rest of your message, I must confess that I have not the slightest idea what you are talking about. Stifle (talk) 22:02, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

All I'm saying, stifle my sweet, is that the most certain manner to ensure Wikipeea never removes a listing is to INSIST upon its removal and attack the editors who support it. Then like trained Skinner rats, they band together, circle the wagons, and defend the listing until the day they die lol lol Done it before and it works like a charm. The music artists I've attacked will never be removed and never be tagged again, I promise you that lol lol I got that bit of advice from a fellow who once worked as an active editor here and then left in disgust in a bitter disagreement with the guy who set up this whole internet thingie. He told me the secret to ensuring listings will never be challenged, no matter how less than notable or dumb they might be, and so far he's been 100% correct lol lol

Patrick Briscoe

Hello, Please can you help me in reinstating the Patrick Briscoe page. I believe you deleted it in April.

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Poochlet (talkcontribs) 09:00, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

While I'm happy to answer questions, it looks like your question could have been answered and resolved more quickly if you had used my message wizard. It's linked as "Talk" after my name and at the top of my talk page. Why not try it next time?
Patrick Briscoe was deleted by User:Davewild and not me. You would need to discuss the matter with him. Please note that there was a unanimous decision to delete the page, and you can view the archived deletion discussion here. Stifle (talk) 10:23, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

CENT conclusions

I've stumbled upon Wikipedia:Centralized discussion/Conclusions, and my first thought was to make it {{historical}}. But, I've noticed you are a single person still updating it, so I would like to ask: why? Conclusions will be always looked upon on the original talk pages anyway, nobody will search in a such well-hidden place. --Kubanczyk (talk) 19:19, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, the page is there more with the intention of having a link to the old pages that have been taken off {{cent}}. It doesn't particularly need to include conclusions, but if someone wants to make a new centralized discussion topic and can see that a previous discussion of the same topic failed, they might be able to save their time. Stifle (talk) 10:26, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
I had no idea the Conclusions page existed. It seems like a good idea! EdJohnston (talk) 14:30, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
It seems obvious that when anyone adds anything to WP:CENT they first should check the Talk page and archives, it is unlikely that they look at Conclusions page because (a) hard to find (b) the conclusions can be safely assumed as outdated, because no synchronization is kept with the primary source. If you insist on keeping it for archival reasons, I would suggest naming it Archive instead of Conclusions. This would be the obvious name. --Kubanczyk (talk) 11:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Just my personal observation, but the postings on CENT often appear to be well-intentioned but a waste of time, since these discussions are often long and inconclusive. Having a 'scoresheet' that shows that some of them have a good outcome might be a positive thing. EdJohnston (talk) 16:59, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
I think I can agree with that, Ed. Kubanczyk, feel free to move the page or nominate it for MFD. Stifle (talk) 09:33, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Done renamed it. --Kubanczyk (talk) 11:43, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Stifle, I would like to be considered for rollback permission. Thanks --Noxia (talk) 17:09, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't want to be mean here, but per our conversation on Noxia's talk, they might need to get a little more comfortable with using undo properly before going to rollback. Franamax (talk) 17:30, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Copyright free

Dear Stifle, This image was made by a contributor who attached the copyright free tag to this stunning quartzite statue of pharaoh Amenhotep III--the father of Akhenaten. [4] The picture is another copyright free image from egyptarchive.co.uk.

Do you know how I would create this specific CF tag in the picture? I assume it would be {{pd-XX}} but I don't know the exact words are for the two XX's. Or would public domain be good enough? I'm sorry to disturb you...its just that I'm an amateur at uploading pictures to Wikicommons. Thank You from Canada Leoboudv (talk) 05:27, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
The tag on that page is {{Copyrighted free use}}.
If you create an image yourself and want to release it to the public domain, use {{PD-self}}. Stifle (talk) 09:37, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Thank You Stifle for your time and pointers on Wikicommons tags. You are a very kind and decent chap indeed! Regards, Leoboudv (talk) 19:39, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Attack images also suspected as covyvio

Hello, Stifle. I saw you deleted the attack image uploaded by Michael Friedrich (talk · contribs). He uploaded also suspicious images in the same vein (uploaded on the same date as soon as he joined in the Wikipedia). I've also requested other images, but still two images are undeleted. Image:Gohomehitler.jpg, Image:Azzuritomb.JPG, all of the bashing images with low quality look captured from TV clips and are not being used as fair use. If you have a time, can you take a look at them? Also, I think the user in question needs a proper warning by an admin. Thanks. --Appletrees (talk) 11:36, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Go ahead and recreate it. The only sentence on the page that I could make any sense of was "The Saint is a famous land mark in Townsville, Queensland which was painted by a group of men in 1962". The rest was rubbish. Stifle (talk) 20:51, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Swedish auction

I note that you have deleted Swedish auction stating that it is (previously) deletad material (G4). But this is NOT previously delated material! The TITLE of the recent article was the same as that of the previous article but the CONTENTS were totally new taking every precaution to make sure that there is nothing offensive in the recent article. Please have a close look at the contents that you have deleted. Let the recent article "stand on its own feet" and be judged by its own merits, not on the contents of the previous article. Please! - On the Swedish auction Talk page I added some background material. That was also deleted. - By the way, I note that you are an Irish Wikipedian. "[L]ow level of Wikipedia namespace edits..."

S;

I'm having a good think, and that comment of yours caught my eye. Since I give you credit for having (>= 1/2) a brain, I'd like to pick it: There is no evidence that we can teach the ability to work collegially, or to create content. I think we can teach policy. Is there some reason that we shouldn't promote people who don't yet know chapter and verse? I can think of some, but I want to hear your views first.
brenneman 01:12, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, as a preface, I don't think that creating content is a requirement for adminship. But that's not the point, I suspect.
As we know, there is a fairly large gulf with few steps in between autoconfirmed user and sysop. Sysops gain a lot of tools at once when the crat flicks the switch. I am not, as such, comfortable with relying on an after-the-fact approach to teaching policies to new admins (plus the fact that it's too bloody hard to get rid of bad ones) so I look for 500+ contribs to Wikipedia namespace to show that there is at least a basic amount of work on policy pages/AFDs/etc. I wouldn't expect someone to know chapter and verse (although I would expect that someone could look up the answer to ~90% of policy questions, but I'm not going to go and test that because I have a life). I just need to see that the candidate has done at least some meta-work on the project before they go blocking and/or deleting.
If it were possible I would check for contributions to AFDs, AIV, etc., and I do check deleted contributions (for good speedy nominations) when I get a chance, because those are the places where I'm expecting admin candidates to have cut their teeth. But there are already people who sift through candidates' histories looking for reasons to oppose, and I hope I don't become one of them.
Feel free to follow up on this — I can't claim to be right all the time, or even most of the time, and I value your opinion. Stifle (talk) 08:31, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for that response. I find it mostly in line with my thoughts, so some bare-bones responses:
  1. [F]ew steps [from] autoconfirmed user [to] sysop... [they] gain a lot of tools at once
    • Ok, if we were to fractionalise the tools, what are the most "dangerous" ones?
      • Protections is benign, ability to edit protected pages is not.
      • Deletion is benign, resotration *cough* BLP *cough* is not. Viewing deleted pages? Not sure.
      • Blocking is nuc-u-lar.
      • How about an intermediate level, then? Give the 'less dangerous" tools to the lower level? Problems with mechanics, etc, yes I know. But we're already handing out rollback.
    • Which is as easy to take away as to give... hmm, nice segue.
  2. [To]o bloody hard to get rid of bad ones
    • The community decides to award the bit but can't take it away? Odd.
    • I believe that there is close to a critical mass of admins who would support some process.
    • It should not involve Arbcom.
  3. [L]ooking for reasons to oppose
    • Ouch. Lucky I just supported someone then! But you're right, it's trial by fire.
    • Maybe #2 would ease that?
Thank again
brenneman 01:31, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Pretty much agree with all that.
I don't think it's disputed that RFA is the worst possible process for turning people into sysops, except for all the other ones that have been proposed, and that since adminship is allegedly not a big deal, removing it should not be a big deal either. However, getting agreement on how to change it all seems nigh-on impossible.
Splitting the tools might perhaps be more helpful. Rollback was implemented rather stealthily but worked surprisingly well. It's marked as a perennial proposal though, and the last attempt was opposed.
So if we were to have "half-sysops" (working title), and assuming they're needed, what would they be able to do?
Good ideas:
  • Delete pages
  • Protect pages (but maybe not cascading)
  • Rollback
  • Avoid the account creation limit
Bad ideas:
  • Block
  • Undelete
  • View deleted revisions (more or less equivalent to undeleting really since they can just c/p the deleted version, and it comes with the added effect of GFDL-compliance issues)
  • Unprotect
  • Edit protected pages
What else do we do as sysops anyway? Stifle (talk) 14:31, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

If you could, would you e-mail me what the original article was? Most likely, if like the user's other contributions, it wouldn't have been nonsense, meaningless, or incomprehensible, but most likely it would have been highly POV, need wikifying, and much un-sourced. The user is also correct that the Anishinaabe peoples were located farther south, but fails to make the connection that the Saulteaux and Cree were active partners in the Fur Trade and thus positioned themselves all along the trans-Plains trade routes. CSD I8

Hi, Stifle, I got your message about my manually flagging images for deletion. I've discussed this with other admins in the past, particularly Mets501, who runs MetsBot. You should know I've moved hundreds of images to the Commons, and I'm presently in a project to move all Flickr-sourced images to the Commons, where the licenses can be verified by Commons' trusted user scheme and the images are safe from deletion in the event of the all-too-frequent license changes at Flickr. In those cases (images sourced from Flickr) it's not generally necessary to credit the uploader at en Wikipedia unless they made substantial modifications (i.e. enough to generate a new copyright) to the original image - the Flickr user is the only copyright holder that needs to be attributed.

Agreed that some of those are not bit-for-bit for identical copies - I think all the images on which you removed my {{db}} were lower-resolution versions of the Commons images (I always upload the highest-res version possible at Commons) Although CSD I8 doesn't specifically address this, CSD I1 does ("in the same file format and same or lower quality/resolution"). I suppose technically they could be nominated at WP:IFD, but there deletions there would be utterly uncontroversial, and it seems to me that would just unnecessarily further clog a process that is already backlogged enough as it is.

On the images you specifically had a problem with:

If you check my deleted contribs you can see that I have been following this practice uncontroversially for some time. Kelly hi! 15:21, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Talk page sorting

Stifle, sorry about this - but, in my opinion, this whole talk page sorting scheme you've got in place seems kind of dumb. It makes it harder for people (especially new users) to figure out how to talk to you, and it also makes it harder for users who track your admin behavior to keep tabs on what's going on. If you'd like to sort your archives based on subject of the complaint, that's fine - but I think it's inappropriate to direct users off to obscure subpages in order to communicate with you. Kelly hi! 20:37, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Kelly, I think you're misreading what it going on here, the link just gives some options, then, if you want to leave a message, any message you live is directed to a new section on this talk page. Communication takes place on this talk page, but other resolutions may be found by reading the appropriate heading. If I'm wrong, Stifle, let me know. However, Kelly, you may want to follow through on one of the links and see what happens. --Blechnic (talk) 22:01, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Blechnic, that is exactly right. Kelly, the purpose of the talk page wizard is to make sure that visitors can get as quick as possible a resolution to their issue by diverting problems that anyone could handle to the admin noticeboards, helping people to figure out for themselves why I deleted their page, and explaining that I do not generally intervene or mediate in disputes (I don't have much time to do so). I hope that answers your query. Stifle (talk) 18:38, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I have seen that some people upload similar posters under the heading of "fair use". Should be grateful if you would kindly shed some light on this question. I should add that I put this exact question to User:Polly sometimes ago, but it seems that she has not been in for a long time. Kind regards, --BF 23:04, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

That would seem fine. The tag you should use is {{Non-free poster}} along with a {{Non-free use rationale}} with the options completed. Make sure you also specify the source URL.

Dear Stifle, thank you very much for the very useful information. Kind regards, --BF 13:55, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm curious. If you don't mind...

could you please clarify or specify what instances you were referring to in the 'heckling' part of your comment here? Cheers - Ncmvocalist (talk) 10:24, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Nearly every oppose "vote" was commented on or argued with. Stifle (talk) 10:47, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
