    Mention of polygamy[edit]

.. Yeah, I'm not entirely sure about that either. There seems to be some discussion under Polyamory#Marriage implications. Not going to revert again because I don't have strong feelings on that topic. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 13:25, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's just a common talking point against same-sex marriage (that being able to marry someone of the same-sex will lead to a man wanting to marry 100+ women) [30]. I've self-reverted since I don't have a strong opinion about its inclusion either way. Some1 (talk) 13:31, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. So the slippery slope about how same-sex marriage "destroys traditional family values" and such from the far right. Ethical non-monogamy is probably possible (I'm quite uneducated and inexperienced in this topic), and apparently there are queer people who push for that, but these are two different things. (one is probably talking about the practice of polygyny which can be seen as oppression of women; the other talks about relationships that don't have characteristics of oppression) 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 13:51, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the slippery slope argument from anti-LGBT people (particularly from those in the US as polygamy is illegal in the US) that legalizing same-sex marriage will open the door to... a bunch of other things. Here's a good quote from the Politico article I linked:
Yet this non sequitur just won't go away: "Once we stop limiting marriage to male-plus-female, we'll have to stop limiting it at all! Why only two? Why not three or four? Why not marriage to your brother? Or your dog? Or a toaster?" If there's a bloody shirt to wave in the gay-marriage debate, this is it.
(I just want to clarify that I'm speaking solely about polygamy and not polyamory.) Some1 (talk) 14:22, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
