Snake Tales

Slight Smile I did explain my revert re the snake entry on the Gundagai Article page. I put my explanation on the Discussion Page for the Gundagai article. I think that snake entry is relevant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.134.117.210 (talk) 00:29, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't know it was a folklore. "The black snake was the wife of the brown".
Could I ask a favor, I did a lot of work at the same time I did yesterday's revert. Could you copy paste the snake myth as well as the outlaw story back in instead of doing a whole revert. SlightSmile 00:36, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Happy to do that slight smile but do not know what 'outlaw' story you mean. The "black snake was the wife of the brown" may be Aboriginal cultural content that refers to a big volcanic flow here at Gundagai, one that was black lava and one a mud flow. The man who made that comment (George Bennett) was the first boss of the Australian Museum and was a highly skilled scientist and medical doctor. I still need to put in the page in his journal that that comment of his is on. I will go revert it all back to how you had it then put the snake content back in, then look for the 'outlaw' stuff. We call them 'bushrangers' here (in Gundagai but in Australia too), not "outlaws". Gundagai is famous in Australia for its multiple layers of folklore and its folklore is significant but is also based on fact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.134.117.210 (talk) 01:09, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Later - I tried to revert it back slightsmile but it wont do it because of "intermediate edits". I tried. I am guessing that is to do with the paragraphs. I will try to find them manually after I find the bushrager content you mentioned (outlaw content i.e.). Cheers.144.134.117.210 (talk) 01:22, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, if you can that would be great. Some of the sections are pretty bad - a lump of text no one's going to read. Also, I want to add another comment to Gundagai's talk page - as I look at the Snakes section, it's not clear to the readers that it refers to local myths. I would suggest renaming the section something like "Snake tales". SlightSmile 01:32, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Reply - OK, I will put 'Snake Tales'. I think the article reads well. I think many will read it as many people do a google for Gundagai info as the town is so iconic in Australia's story. The Stanley and Jones bushrangers are important as those two went on to be gaoled for other crimes and including those two on the Gundagai page gives a record of bushrangers that were to do with Gundagai. I do have a degree in 'Australian Studies' as one of my degrees. I also live at Gundagai and my lot have been here since the 1840s. The person who is complaining about ghosts and Aboriginal content on the page went to High School age 15 level. I know who that person is and it is trolling aimed at me not at the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.134.117.210 (talk) 01:48, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Back from a little break. I just realise readers might still interpret "tales" as actual reports - not good. Something like "Snake (whatever lingo for Aboriginal for mythology)" might be better. Non Australians aren't familiar with the folkloric attributes of Gundagai. I still say it needs a lot of paragraph breaks. I haven't followed the article's history to know which problem user you're referring to. I first heard of the place from the mini series Changi where the POWs are singing variations of Road to Gundagai. Also, no need to put four tildes in your edit summaries, just at the end of posts on talk pages. SlightSmile 02:21, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Reply - the stories/tales about Gundagai snakes are real events considered important enough for the National Library of Australia in Canberra to preserve under their 'Trove' project. The note from esteemed scientist George Bennett is his recording of something that cannot be western science that he is referring to as scientific thought tells us that red snakes are not the wives of brown snakes - so it must mean something else. I do not know what he is actually referring to but guess it may mean the volcanics here as a cultural story that by coincidence is mirrored in what snakes actually do. I was intendign to put some up re the volcanics here that is little known, (fully cited from its author who is a senior scientist). Its not culturally appropriate for me to put Aboriginal stories that I author here as I am not Aboriginal. I do not author Aboriginal cultural stories. Nor do I author Eskimo stories or English stories. I am Australian of European descent. Australian Aboriginal people and culture are a continuing culture. Their culture has continued for thousands of years and is not in the past as some think. "Lingo" is not that great a term to use as Australian Aboriginal language is Australian Aboriginal language or linguistics etc. the same as English language is English language or linguistics, not English lingo. We don't demean the culture by slipping into a slang term for a cultural group's linguistics. However Australian Aboriginal people can use slang re their culture and sometimes they do but that is cultural. Their cultural not mine. Australian Aboriginal stories are Australian Aboriginal stories or culture or mythology or law or lore or belief. If I put the non Aboriginal snake stories up and called it Aboriginal snake Dreaming stories that is incorrect as they are non-Australian Aboriginal stories. Best just left as its all appropriate. Anyone who clicks on the cites for the snake tales will find that those cites link to our National Library in Canberra, then to the sources they came from so to anyone it will be easy to see their origin the same as links to items on the Olympics and other events have the same links from wiki to where they were reported. The Gundagai page link to the Mirriyolla Ghost Dog story is sourced from and cited to an Aboriginal person so its posted here appropriately. Snakes don't have tales anyway. In Australian slang, a snake story is a suspicious story the same as 'I caught a fish this big' story is. The term 'snake story' in Australian ways, sort of alerts the reader to the fact there may be a degree of exaggeration. I don't believe there is exaggeration in those snake stories I put up and cited to their sources. What would I know though. I am not the source of the snake stories. Australian mythology and folklore is a thing not immediately apparent to people who do not understand it the same as platypus and kangaroos baffled people from other cultures, in the 1700s. No one can deliver that understanding via a wiki article as that is not how cultural understanding is acquired. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.134.113.86 (talk) 06:11, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Did you notice that I struck out my Aboriginal suggestion? When I looked at the Snake tales section again I realized that I was mistaken. As you noted, you know the topic well so just do what you do.
It's too late now, but after I closed down for the day I thought of what I should have suggested after your 00:29, 20 October message above. You let me revert back to my last edit and I copy paste your additions back in, getting the best of both our contributions. Too late now - oh well them's the beans. It's good meeting you. Ever think of getting an account? You seem like a good contributor and discuss issues in a civil manner. The project needs people like that. SlightSmile 16:49, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Will you leave my edits alone, because you are reverting edits that were made after my edits were reverted largely without explanation (and not unbiased edits at that), I am a new user of this site. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.101.102.233 (talk) 01:00, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Those reversions of *that* editor were reversions of my *own* edits,so I have the right of way so to speak in objecting to them (ie by reverting them) tell your friend to take it to the talk section, it can their be discussed *prior* to any further revisions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.101.102.233 (talk) 01:17, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Kill, slay, and murder

At the time that the KJV was written, the word "slay" meant to take a life, and the word "kill" meant to slay criminally. Today, the word "kill" means to take a life, and the word "murder" means to kill criminally. Language changes. The Hebrew original of that commandment, lo tirtzach means "Do not murder". - Lisa (talk - contribs) 15:29, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Re: Fantasy or dark fantasy

I agree with your original thought, which was to revert it back to plain ol' fantasy. "Dark fantasy" seems to imply a horror element, and while that often applies to vampires, I don't think anyone can classify the Twilight movies as "horror". Andrea (talk) 01:01, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Australias National Debt - What's your motive for deleting my update?

Hi,

Wondering why you reverted my update of Australias National Debt back to the old information from September 2011? Notwithstanding the old budget deficit figures from 2009/10?

I validated my update with links inserted from the Australian Office of Financial Management (for the current Aus Gov debt) and the Aus Govs Budget Papers of 2011/12.

Not sure what your motive is? Could you please explain?

Cheers Silverlake1 (talk) 01:39, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Your edits gave the article a messy look and I assumed the worse. How about re-adding your fresh info and if possible maintain some form of layout. You might find useful tips here. Either way re-add it and if I have time I'll see if I can clean it up. How's that? SlightSmile 01:52, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

That seems reasonable. Your best bet is to take this to the article's talk page and if no one responds in a few days or so go ahead and make the change. There shouldn't be a problem. SlightSmile 00:28, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
Oh and make sure you put "per talk page" in the edit summary when you do make the change. SlightSmile 18:22, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for reverting, although I didn't realize someone had done that. I redid the colors anyway—I actually was aware that the colors were a little bit on the gold/brown side but didn't have time earlier today to fix it. Is the new version (see lead image) ok? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 01:38, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure about the colors but it's still much better than the Los Angeles image from November 12, 2012. SlightSmile 01:55, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I understood you the first time, but thanks for clarifying. The older version of my upload was really golden brown and gross and for some reason I had the same thing happening on another image. Just a poor job on my end. I think now hopefully it'll be ok, looks more natural. The original was missing an imbedded color profile and ended up being far more over-exposed looking than I'd originally expected. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 02:32, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

La Bolduc

Maintenance Tag

Re. La Bolduc, the number of red links has been reduced considerably by creation of stub articles. Another editor reverted me when I removed some other links, so it seems that there is some disagreement as to what should be done. Jamesx12345 08:47, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

  • If you're not trying to write an encyclopaedia, but trying to impede the process because you're embarrassed of what the readers might think, you're in the wrong place. A well written article is going to link to everything it should link to, regardless of whether the article exists or now. Hell, you linked WP:REDLINK, so try reading it. Some articles should probably not have any redlinks, while non-English subjects from a century ago or more (such as La Bolduc) are often going to require a lot. WilyD 08:32, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
    • If everything is for the readers, then you need to place your own embarrassment about the encyclopaedia being unfinished below the task of writing an encyclopaedia to inform the readers, direct them to what they're looking for, etc. If red links embarrass you, write the articles. It's your own statement that you're prioritising avoiding embarrassment over writing an encyclopaedia; if you're here to write an encyclopaedia, act like it. Just because a maintenance tag exists, doesn't mean it appropriate for all articles. Adding inappropriate tags to articles is disruptive to those people who are trying to create an encyclopaedia. WilyD 08:33, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

Alien abduction

I think I straightened out the messages after I had an edit conflict with you. Here they are as they now are on my user talk page:

The IP seems to be trying to make an article here but doesn't know the ropes. I wouldn't know how to help him/her and I'm packing it in for the day. Know any where he/she can get help making a stub? SlightSmile 02:39, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
The immediate problem would be the need for a source. All other persons listed in the article on Alien abduction have articles. Presumably, they have sources. The IP tried to add this name but I reverted due to lack of an article and lack of a source. I wonder from the attempt whether the IP is a non-English speaker or a rather young person. I will look quickly for a source. Otherwise, I will place a welcome template. There would no reason to spend further time on this. If this were a notable incident, alien abduction buffs might have put up an article by now. Donner60 (talk) 02:51, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Sounds good. Thanks SlightSmile 03:00, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
I found nothing about this on Google or High Beam. I think it is a hoax or a prank, possibly involving someone the IP knows. It should be deleted. Meanwhile, I left a welcome template - although I have second thoughts about that now. Donner60 (talk) 03:03, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for reverting the vandalism to my talk page. I think that it is proper to refer to a transgender person as the gender as of the time the statement covers. So currently in the case of Laverne Cox, that would be female. I suppose I could have got that wrong, or maybe it would have been debatable, if I had the wrong time period in her life. The response shows me I got it right. We could use "their", I guess. But I do not favor that usage if we know the person's gender. Donner60 (talk) 01:31, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

I wasn't aware of that dispute when I reverted the offensive post on your page. To be honest of all things in the world, that issue is so not a priority with me. If I was to give it any thought it would be: if someone wants to be a she then let them be a she. As far as encyclopedic accuracy is concerned, I think the readers will understand we're in a grey area here. I just spent more than five seconds on this story. SlightSmile 21:01, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your thoughts. It wasn't a priority with me, either. It just struck me as wrong when the edit popped up. I think I would have acceded to a reasonable explanation. Donner60 (talk) 07:38, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
You did exactly right though I have to admit more often than not I would have left it for someone else to fight it out. SlightSmile 16:30, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Debate on Bernard Shaw's nationality.

Was he "Irish" or "British" or do we need to define his nationality in some other way? A debate on the subject, to reconsider a long-standing consensus that he was Irish, has started at talk:George Bernard Shaw. Just in case you're interested. Current comments are at "Nationality", at the foot of the page - although an earlier thread at "Irish"? may also be relevant. --Soundofmusicals (talk) 06:01, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

You have a problem with my edits?

I don't hesitate to straighten out the amateurish, clunky, convoluted and turgid writing I find here on Wikipedia in abundance. Try reading the before and after and honestly ask yourself if it reads better. Reverting edits wholesale without thinking is a very bad idea. Zedshort (talk) 02:42, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

... gerund form of verbs makes the writing very clunky tells me that you are a serious editor regarding grammar and style improvements. Making the reading a little smoother. We've all encountered editors who unfortunately waste edits on minor unhelpful details (such as BC BCE). So I don't blame Rolfy or myself for being a bit quick on the assumptions here, especially seeing no edit summaries. Keep doing the good work. SlightSmile 17:01, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi,

Would you please share your views on redirecting the ENO Drugs page to Antacid. Usually when articles are small, editors like to merge similar articles into fewer medium sized articles. That makes sense. I just did some tweaking on the Doc's merge and redirect. Take a look now see what you think. SlightSmile 19:03, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Discussion Concluded

Hi, not sure what is going on. Why did you restore an unsourced section in the body? Everything not in the lede requires references and again, if the information is below as the other editor claims, it is redundant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:788B:DF50:8CDD:5461:389A:631B (talk) 19:45, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Whatever your valid reasons, it's almost - not quite there yet but almost becoming an edit war which they don't tolerate here. That's when it's time to take it to the talk page here. You might (or not) be right but I'm not really the one discuss this with. Good luck. SlightSmile 20:32, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
Except you are involved, you reverted a change to an unsourced section, which is also the first section after the lede. There is no edit war and if you want it discussed as an experienced editor, maybe you could add a comment on the talk page rather than just reverting and walking away. Everything not in the lede requires reliable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:788B:DF50:8CDD:5461:389A:631B (talk) 21:29, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
One task editors take on here is patrolling recent changes looking for vandalism or otherwise disruptive editing which I have to be honest yours was starting to look like. We revert a hundred such edits a day and "walk away". You seem to know your way around here, why don't you get an account and see how they do things here.
About your issue in Watchmaker. Unsourced content can be either removed or merely tagged {{Citation needed|date=February 2017}} on a case by case basis. It's a judgment call made by fallible human beings.
My advice to you is just tag it and move on. If it's something you really feel strongly about then you'll have to go to that talk page and make your case. By the way sign your posts by typing four tildes like this ~~~~. SlightSmile 22:16, 24 February 2017 (UTC)
Whether or not I have an account has nothing to do with the quality of my edits or in the enforcement of policy, which you have chosen to ignore. I will tag it so someone else can clean your mess. 2602:304:788B:DF50:8CDD:5461:389A:631B (talk) 05:06, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

BC/BCE

So if it's a frivolous issue why do you insist on wasting your time imposing your POV? Note: the original usage was BC in the article in question, then some edit warrior came along to change it to BCE - I referenced the edit. As you'll know, such changes go against the policy of first use, hence my revert. You actually mention the BC / BCE issue in a thread on your talk page from last year, so you appear to have an interest here. For me, whenever I see BCE my first thought is "I bet that was originally BC, and someone with an agenda has come along to change it". Sure enough, that was the case with Philology, hence my entirely valid revert to that original usage. 141.6.11.25 (talk) 15:47, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Everyone has their pet peeves. Mine is edits for minor details filling up users' watchlist, many of which concern BC AD CE BCE and they start to add up. If I walk away from this, in a month I'll see someone changing it back again the other way. Multiply that by many thousands of articles. Time to draw a line. As I stated there's many ways to participate here. SlightSmile 19:56, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
Just one further remark on what I know is a controversial subject. You suggest that I "don't concern [my]yourself about era style". Please don't concern yourself either. 141.6.11.25 (talk) 12:28, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
I concern myself but thanks for the thought. I agree it's disruptive someone with an agenda going around changing BCs to BCE. Probably someone with an ax to grind about religion. Going around changing the other way, BCE to BC is no better.
You know what. You seem like a serious editor. Make that change at Philology. Maybe make a thread on the talk page first explaining what you said above. All the best. SlightSmile 13:14, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, and the offer. I won't change the article but I'll put a comment on Talk asking for other opinions (busy at the moment, so I'll do it over the next couple of days). The issue is, of course, minor within the context of the article so it might not get much comment. In which case, time for us all to move on. Thanks again. 141.6.11.22 (talk) 08:54, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Rites of Initiation

Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist

Hi Slightsmile,

I noticed that on 10 June 2017 you asked at a site how first Eucharist "can be a rite of initiation." Just stopping by to explain that the three sacraments of initiation in the Roman Catholic Church are Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The explanation that the three sacraments are part of the sacraments of initiation is easiest to see in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)in which those who have never been baptized into any Christian faith receive baptism and confirmation and then their first Holy Communion. The Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox initiate neophytes as infants where they receive baptism, confirmation, and first Eucharist in the same ceremony. (Infants receive the Precious Blood on a special spoon.) This derives from practices in the ancient early church in which catechumens entered the waters of baptism and exited to receive the Holy Spirit. Then when clothed, they joined the community and received their first Eucharist. Hope this helps.

Semper Paratus.

Taram (talk) 23:50, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Oops, I forgot to add a link where you can study more about this. The easiest place to look would be at the Vatican's website for the Compendium of the Catechism Catholic Church. The section that would be applicable would be Part II, Section 2, Chapter 1 called "The Sacraments of Christian Initiation ." Then there are three subsections called "The Sacrament of Baptism, The Sacrament of Confirmation, The Sacrament of the Eucharist." One way you can look at the Vatican's info about the three sacraments of initiation is here: http://www.vatican.va/archive/compendium_ccc/documents/archive_2005_compendium-ccc_en.html#The sacraments of Christian initiation

Place Names need Qualifiers

Sorry, do not agree. Most people in the western english world are beholden to social media - social media creates a false view of the world on almost everything. Perth Australia, along with other absurdities - denies accurate geographic knowledge. For a start the argument that created 'perth' as the prime location without qualifier was infested with those editors who dont like qualifiers. I was fortunate to have a relative who had lived in Ontario a very very long time ago, who never stated the name of a place without qualifying where - on the basis that there were more places with ambiguity than, no as many as, the late frank zappa alluded to when utilising the place names for his dislike of urban us culture all those decades ago... (how many springfields in the us say?). I think that place and country is wrong. For some very good reasons. Some mostly former editors of wikipedia thought that google hits was enough to determine primacy. I say may they live in Ontario and try living amongst the place names that require qualification as a matter of life or death perhaps. I like qualifiers, for a whole range of reasons. Please never assume that there is a collective geographical 'good sense' amongst fellow wikipedians. Tasmania has been designated as a separate country by wise editors. I rest my case. Thanks for your comments. I beg to disagree. JarrahTree 01:15, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Though it may seem to you to be a discussion that might not have many ramifications - wrong. The things that we touch on are things like various carnivores (not elephants) in the room. People used to get beaten around the head and other parts of the anatomy over primacy - i find the effort and angst created by having primacy in articles or items to be quite anti-encyclopediac - the general resolution over that could have to be abandon things tied into the google algorithm - google hits are neither a template or standard that wp en articles or subjects should be tied into imho - there are subjects and topics that do not show up on the omnivorous algorthym of whatever guiles or guides it. So why respond on this? Binary names - place and location (within a narrower context for the qualifer, and not country but something more specific) - are endless issues that we as a community should have resolved years ago, but due to the nature of the place... Pity youre elsewhere, this is a long beer or three, or tea, coffee, whatever - that should have been resolved at a wikimania, or something similar. Bet youre a canuck - go geulph! (the relative was enrolled in U of T long before you or I were even on the twinkle of an eye). sigh JarrahTree 03:53, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
