Invitation to Organize Wiki Loves Love 2019[edit]

Wiki Loves Love (WLL) is an International photography competition of Wikimedia Commons to subject love testimonials happening in the month of February 2019.

The primary goal of the competition is to document love testimonials through human cultural diversity such as monuments, ceremonies, snapshot of tender gesture, and miscellaneous objects used as symbol of love; to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia, and other Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) projects. February is around the corner and Wiki Loves Love team invites you to organize and promote WLL19 in your country and join hands with us to celebrate love and document it on Wikimedia Commons. The theme of 2019 is Festivals, ceremonies and celebrations of love.

To organize Wiki Loves Love in your region, sign up at WLL Organizers page. You can also simply support and spread love by helping us translate the commons page in your local language which is open for translation.

The contest starts runs from 1-28 February 2019. Independent from if there is a local contest organised in your country, you can help by making the photo contest Wiki Loves Love more accessible and available to more people in the world by translating the upload wizard, templates and pages to your local language. See for an overview of templates/pages to be translated at our Translations page.

Imagine...The sum of all love!

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Manila Metro Rail Transit System stored-value ticket (2006).jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Manila Metro Rail Transit System stored-value ticket (2006).jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Dee C. Chuan, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Jinjiang (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

A barnstar for you![edit]

Barnstar of Reliability
Thank you for developing Cite Unseen, a user script that helps Wikipedia readers and editors understand the reliability of cited sources by annotating them with icons based on their type. Your project introduces a novel approach to countering disinformation with awareness and mindfulness. — Newslinger talk 09:19, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you don't mind if I fork Cite Unseen and modify it to present information from the perennial sources list. Please let me know if you would like to collaborate instead, and I'll be happy to adapt the perennial sources list into a machine-readable format that can be used as a data source for Cite Unseen. — Newslinger talk 09:19, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for the barnstar, Newslinger! That said, we're definitely open to collaborations. Let me tag SuperHamster here as well so he knows. :) (As for forks, it's all open-source anyway. :P) --Sky Harbor (talk) 17:07, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Newslinger: would definitely love to collab on this! Perennial source identification has been on my radar to add into the script, so excited to hear you're interested in implementing it - it'd be great to collab and have it merged into master.
As you probably saw, the git repo for the project is here. index.js is the main script, and domain categorization objects are located in data/ (the script doesn't do much more than simply string-match domains). Once perennial sources are categorized in JSON format, it'll be easy to add icons for them. Let me know if this sounds all right or if you were thinking of another implementation.
Also, this is a total shot in the dark, but: if you happen to be nearby, WikiConference North America will be in Cambridge Nov 8-11, and both Sky and I will be there and hosting a session on Cite Unseen. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:06, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Exciting! Let's do this!

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to type up all of my thoughts before I had to take a life-related wikibreak last week. I didn't intend to leave you in the dark.

The WikiConference North America watchlist notice was actually how I found out about Cite Unseen. The presentations in the schedule look really interesting, and I'll definitely watch any videos that are released, but unfortunately, I can't make it to the conference in person. I hope both of you enjoy the conference!

It would be great if we could complete the perennial sources integration before your presentation, since this would make a nice example of community collaboration. (Please let me know whether this is a practical goal.) There are a few points that we have to figure out, and since there are three of us, I'm going to organize the discussion in sections to make it easier to follow. — Newslinger talk 19:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! Hope everything is all right re. life-related things. Personally capacity-wise I probably don't have too much time to devote to this prior to the conference, as both Sky and I are actually helping organize the conference itself. But regardless of whether or not perennial sources are integrated before the conference, we can always mention that there's a current community collab that is on-going, which will be exciting to discuss as-is. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:25, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's totally fine, since having no deadline gives us more time to do things right. I hope the conference is a big success, and I look forward to watching the videos and reading the slides. — Newslinger talk 07:39, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cite Unseen integrations[edit]

Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC)[edit]

After reading through your 2018 presentation slides, I'm curious about where the data is coming from. Is all of the data from Media Bias/Fact Check (RSP entry)?

If that's the case, we'll have to somehow reconcile the fact that the English Wikipedia community considers MBFC generally unreliable, since it would be a contradiction to use a data source that classifies another data source as untrustworthy. Perhaps giving users a choice between:

  1. Sources created by the community (including RSP and others, see below)
  2. Media Bias/Fact Check
  3. Other third-party sources (see below)

would resolve this, as Cite Unseen would show only one consistent group of data sources at a time. — Newslinger talk 19:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Perennial sources list (RSP)[edit]

JSON is exactly what I had in mind. Are there specific types of information you would be interested in, or would you prefer a full data dump of WP:RSP to JSON? Also, would you like the data organized in a particular way?

Each object, representing one entry from the perennial sources list, could look like this:

  • id (string): Anchor name of the entry on Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources
  • name (string): Name of source
  • article (string): English Wikipedia article name corresponding to source
  • aspect (optional string): Which aspect of the source the entry applies to (e.g. contributors)
  • aliases (optional array of objects)
    • name (string): Name of alias (i.e. nickname, abbreviation, former name, alternative name, name of parent company, or name of subsidiary)
    • article (optional string): English Wikipedia article name corresponding to alias
  • status (enumerated string)
  • blacklisted (optional boolean): If true, the source is on the English Wikipedia spam blacklist or the Wikipedia global spam blacklist
  • discussions (array of objects)
    • page (string): Name of page on which the discussion is located
    • section (optional string): Section name of discussion
    • label (string): Identifier for the discussion
      • For uninterrupted requests for comment on the reliable sources noticeboard, the year of the RfC
      • For other discussions on the reliable sources noticeboard, the numerical order of the discussion
      • For discussions outside of the reliable sources noticeboard, the order of the discussion represented by an alphabetical character
    • rfc (optional boolean): If true, the discussion is an uninterrupted request for comment on the reliable sources noticeboard
    • active (optional boolean): If true, the discussion is currently active
  • lastDiscussed (number): Year of most recent indexed discussion on the source
  • inProgress (optional boolean): If true, at least one of the discussions in the entry is currently active
  • stale (optional boolean): Entries are normally marked as stale when they have not been discussed on the reliable sources noticeboard for four calendar years. However, sources classified as generally unreliable are not marked as stale if they are identified as self-published or as a publisher of user-generated content. Whether an entry is stale can usually be calculated from the value of lastDiscussed, but in some cases, needs to be overridden by this value.
    • true: Entry is stale, regardless of the value of lastDiscussed
    • false: Entry is not stale, regardless of the value of lastDiscussed
  • summary (string): Summary of previous discussions
  • seeAlso (optional string): id of related entry
  • domains (array of strings): List of domains covered by the entry

This is too much information to show or use all at once, but the details (e.g. discussions, summary, etc.) could be revealed through tooltips.

Ideally, this data would be extracted by a bot and automatically updated on a regular basis once the parsing method is stable. I want to ensure that Cite Unseen has everything it needs from the extracted information, and I'm trying to make this as comprehensive as possible since the extracted data might also be useful for other tools in the future. — Newslinger talk 19:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Other data sources[edit]

After the perennial sources list, you might be interested in adding other data sources to Cite Unseen. Other lists of sources maintained by the community include:

Some of these lists aren't in a normalized format, and we would need to work with their maintainers to make the lists machine-readable.

There's also Ad Fontes Media's Media Bias Chart (MBC), which is occasionally referenced by editors on the reliable sources noticeboard. I'm not sure whether it's reliable, but it's better than Media Bias/Fact Check because it has a named staff, discloses its methodology, and reveals some of the data its ratings are derived from. Note that the perennial sources list conflicts with the MBC on some sources, so it wouldn't be a good idea to use both data sources at once. — Newslinger talk 19:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2019 US Banknote Contest[edit]

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Uprisingengineer's submissions[edit]

Hey there. I've discussed this with SuperHamster over on Discord, but I'd like to hear your thoughts as well. I've noticed that Uprisingengineer has submitted several Russia-related articles to Wikipedia Asian Month. However, I noticed that in many if not most of these cases, the articles in question don't seem to involve Siberia, and the apparent links to Siberia or Asia in general can be peripheral at best. Do you have any ideas on how these articles can be addressed, and if they can still be accepted for WAM? I've held off accepting the articles for some time now for this reason. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 23:46, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there! I was curious, too, about the seeming delay in my submissions. Anyhow, you are right that I have submitted a number of Russian articles for "Wikipedia Asian Month." Culturally, Moscow and "Western" Russia are called "European", but geopolitically, they are called "Asian." The Wikipedia article on Asia places it between "Eastern Europe" and "North Asia" (although, East/North are not opposable coordinates), and when I google "Where is Russia", I am not even given a result, I am simply told "Asia." I would like to say also that the WAM contest image includes Russia, but, as I now am closely examining it with a magnifying glass, I see "European Russia" cut out.
If I was making the call, we would study which tectonic plates, and not which "continents", people are on, as it would eliminate any ambiguity. India's "Indus" river is in the Middle East, and Russia's capital "Moscow" is in Europe. But nobody has excluded India's submissions. Seems like an odd way to do things. Just trying to air my opinion, thank you. Uprisingengineer (talk) 01:11, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
