I've added references to the University of California news website and the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper article in case you doubt the existence of the center. There is also a reference from UC San Diego, a separate campus. I can refer you to secondary sources that document work done by the center, document the existence of the authors and give their affiliations,Sjzaslaw (talk) 05:02, 11 January 2014 (UTC) but they do not concern the center itself.[reply]

Can you tell me what doubts you have that need to be addressed? There is very little in secondary references about the center. If you look at another article I've submitted documenting the work of the center, you can see that the work has been written up in Sky and Telescope and IEEE Spectrum and papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Thanks for your help. -- Steve Zaslaw

Here are some other references that mention the center although they are not about the center: A bunch show up in Scholar. A number show up in Google Book SearchSjzaslaw (talk) 05:00, 11 January 2014 (UTC).[reply]

By way of disclosure, and as stated in the text of the article under consideration, I am the webmaster for the University of California High-Performance AstroComputing Center. Sjzaslaw (talk) 05:48, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New Articles[edit]

Yes you can just create articles without using AFC. Every new article that gets published to mainspace is marked as new until an editor reviews it, even the article I approved goes through the new article process. This keeps major issues and copyright violations from becoming problems. Everyone is encouraged to add to Wikipedia as much as they want as long as they are notable entries. Thanks for contributing! Approved and fixed[edit]

Yes...it is easier for me to just approve it, so I did. As for the name, I should have fixed that when I approved it but I missed it. I just went and moved it. Thanks for letting me know.Chris1834 (talk) 03:25, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for January 13[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bolshoi Cosmological Simulation, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page NSF (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Project AGORA requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://news.ucsc.edu/2013/12/agora-project.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Can you explain what you need? I can access the deleted text, but I can't restore copyright material (which you can see on the original website anyway). If you just want the References, External links etc, I can do that for you Jimfbleak - talk to me? 17:04, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Permission has now been granted to reproduce press release[edit]

Here is a record of my correspondence with the copyright holder in which he gives permission for its reuse:

From: Tim Stephens <stephens@ucsc.edu> Date: Monday, February 10, 2014 at 8:25 AM To: Steve Zaslaw <sjZaslaw@gmail.com> Cc: "Trudy E. Bell" <trudy_e_bell@sbcglobal.net>, <pioweb@ucsc.edu>, Joel Primack <joel@ucsc.edu> Subject: Re: Permission to use contents of UCSC Press Releases

Hi Steve,

The policy of the UCSC Public Affairs Office is that we are fine with our press releases being reproduced in other media, in whole or in part. It happens regularly--in fact, there are a number of web sites that seem to derive all of their "news" from university press releases. The copyright line at the bottom of the page appears automatically on all of the UCSC web pages (top level and secondary pages, from the campus home page on down). But when a press release is distributed to the media the intent is for others to use it.

That said, Wikipedia does have an explicit policy regarding use of press releases: " Occasionally, the question is raised about the copyright status of press releases. While press releases are by nature intended to be reproduced widely, there is no inherent permission to alter them or create derivative works based on them, or to use them for commercial purposes. Accordingly, press releases are handled like other copyrighted content. In the absence of explicit disclaimer or permission, these may not be freely reproduced." (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright)

Therefore, I hereby give you explicit permission to use all or selected parts of the project AGORA press release (http://news.ucsc.edu/2013/12/agora-project.html) for your Wikipedia article. Hope this helps.

- Tim

From: Steve Zaslaw [1] Sent: Saturday, February 8, 2014 12:37 PM To: pioweb@ucsc.edu; stephens@ucsc.edu Cc: Joel Primack; Trudy E. Bell Subject: Permission to use contents of UCSC Press Releases

Hello,

I created a Wikipedia article titled Project AGORA at the behest of Prof. Joel Primack. However, the article was deleted from the encyclopedia due to claims of infringement of the copyrights of the University of California. These claims were made by an editor of Wikipedia (Jimfbleak (talk | contribs) ), and not to my knowledge by someone associated with UC.

I used some text verbatim from the press release, but credited the sources. Therefore, since, if I understood it, the goal of such a release is to propagate the information, I assumed that the University would not consider this a copyright infringement. Contrariwise, it is stated at the bottom of the press release: “©2014 REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.” Therefore, I would like to know what is the policy of University in reproducing some sections of the text, with footnoted credit, and, if in fact the policy permits such use, where it is so stated.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Steve Zaslaw Webmaster UC-HiPACC

Informal review[edit]

I have posted some comments about your AGORA draft article at User talk:Sjzaslaw/sandbox#Informal review comments. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 10:29, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you kindly for disclosing that your employer is University of California High-Performance AstroComputing Center. Also thanks for submitting this and related articles as drafts, which minimizes conflict of interest problems. It is great to have your expertise here at Wikipedia.

Please refrain from editing that article except to correct defamation and other uncontroversial errors.

To do otherwise can be harmful to both your employer's reputation and the integrity of the encyclopedia.

Instead, please recommend improvements to published articles that relate to your employer at article talk pages, and in article drafts, disclosing your affiliation.

Wikipedia's community guideline on this topic is

I hope that helps.

Question about request for me to refrain from edits to articles I've contributed as paid consultant to interested party[edit]

I note that in the proposal for disclosure of affiliation of paid contributors, we see this example, at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Terms_of_use/Paid_contributions_amendment#How_should_I_disclose_paid_contributions_in_my_edit_summary.3F :

'You may represent your employer, affiliation, and client in the edit summary box before you “save” your edit or contribution. For example, before saving your edits to a Wikipedia article about your client, Jordan Smith, you may write this note in the edit summary box: “Jordan Smith has hired me to update their Wikipedia article” or “I work for Jordan Smith.”'

Implicit in this, it seems to me, is the legitimacy of such an edit given the requisite disclosure. Thus, I ask, is this consonant with the request that I refrain from further edits to my articles? I would like to be able to make such disclosed edits.

I do not claim not to have conflicts of interest; that is implicit. Although my contributions to Wikipedia may well stand to be improved, and perhaps they show insider prejudice, I believe I am adding value without promoting commercial or political interests or shading the truth to fit an agenda beyond the transmittal of useful information for the general benefit of readers. Thank you for considering my comments.Sjzaslaw (talk) 18:23, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As a comparison for your interest, Sophie software had a peer-reviewed paper accepted by an IEEE journal, but with no citations or independent coverage, its Wikipedia article was deleted in 2008.
Now, in 2014, I hope to make a case to reinstate it.
