CEM[edit]

Thanx for referring the Gainesway issue to me. I most likely would not have seen it for quite some time. I felt it appropriate to remove it for now, pending what I think might provide for a clear resolution. I can certainly understand why someone would want it removed. Sorry it has taken longer than expected to get back to you but look at the Image deletion work of a new to Wikipedia vigilante on my Talk page and you will understand. Anyway, regarding CEM you said in one of your edit comments that: CEM outbreak important to industry and I agree with you. However, one of the party's who had disagreed deleted it by saying: Not Germane which too is correct.

This is a situation where the reference can in fact be damaging to the farm in question, even though unwarranted, and which is certainly not your intention. Gainesway did not cause the outbreak, had no knowledge of its existence when they bought the stallions in good faith, and as you pointed out, they had U.S. government clearances after quarantine and testing. In addition, once diagnosed they immediately notified the health authorities and spent a great deal of money eradicating it. And, both Lyphard and Caro became very important sires. As such, mentioning it specifically in an article on a very respectable and prestigious breeding farm, is not warranted because of the damage misconceptions can create. Neither would I ever mention the farm in England where it first appeared as they too did not create what is a naturally occurring disease brought on by circumstances over which the breeder had no knowledge of. And too, it is not a disease that is the result of unethical or poor hygienic practices and the like. Not inserting this type of information in such a manner at Wikipedia is very important because unlike Bloodhorse or Thoroughbred Times and other industry magazines who have copyright protection, articles at Wikipedia are GDFL and can be copied in whole or in part and posted on other websites over and over. Sadly, there are unscrupulous businesses who use anything to "hype" their for-profit websites and do not hesitate to print excerpts out of context because it is not illegal. Hence, when one of these websites does that it not only reflects unfairly on Gainesway but also on Wikipedia as the reference source. (I have already found exactly that sort of thing occurring with a website that thankfully has since gone out of business.)

Inserting the information in the Gainesway article here serves no purpose but has the potential to embarrass and even harm the company. As such, I created an article for Contagious Equine Metritis. I recognize and appreciate the sincerity of your work here and hope this explanation gives you a sense of my understanding of the responsibility good editors like you, me, and others carry. Currency conversions[edit]

I too am often curious about currency exchange rates and equally as much about relative rates from say Man o' War's career earnings in 1920 as compared to the value it would have today. However, we cannot show the American equivalent. Wikipedia is a world encyclopedia, not an American encyclopedia with world content. And in fact, with last week's move by China (with its US$1.4 trillion the United States owes China in debt bonds), the rising Euro is about to replace the drastically sinking US$ as the currency of international commerce. If we were to show conversions to American currency then we MUST treat every country in the world equally and post the equivalent for their currency. Then, there is the problem of currency exchange rates at the date in question and few people here would want to start getting exchanges rates day by day (month, even year) for every currency in the world. Obviously that would be an impossible nightmare but what I think maybe we should start to do, is ensure the Currency Sign is linked (€ or US$ or ¥ etc.) where the reader can learn more if they want. Hmmm, I now understand and agree on the currency and certainly didn't mean to make Wikipedia an American only sandbox by any means, just didn't have a clue what a € even was and couldn't search the symbol alone. Anything is an improvement but its still not standardized. The owners need their own page as does the stable. I made a comment on the "talk" page to that end.
