Spring Heeled Jack[edit]

Hello! Have being fascinated with Jack ever since I was a child. As you claim a deep interest in him, and seem to know a great deal on the subject, have you any idea what exactly he might have being? Any illumination would be appreciated. Cheers! Oh, I love the bellydacing photo! very trim! Fergananim 11:14, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, Shauri! Thanks for saying hi. Jack has always puzzled me, and I suppose the fact that we will never truely know who or what he was is part of the fascination. Specking of fascination, I love bellydanceing! Its such a feminine ritual, and one I admire for its artful skill as well as the beauty of the participants! Once, I saw a girl from Brazil do something similar, and was stunned at how she managed to use every part of her body in the dance, though it was'nt bellydancing. I guess I just love to watch women. And women, far more than men, just love to dance. They must know instinctively that its good for the mind, body and soul (as well as an excellant attractant to the opposite sex!). Thanks again! Some minor pimpage[edit]

Hola my Belly-Donna Shauri! Sorry to interrupt your rework on SHJ, but your help and advice are needed. I submitted the article on General Richard O'Connor, Leithp and I've been working on for Feature Status. Please take a look at it then go HERE to cast your vote. Thanks for your indulgance,--R.D.H. Verdad[edit]

My dear Molotov, please, heed Durin's words. We have only met shortly, but it was enough for me to observe your quality. You are experienced, intelligent, and extremely capable. It will come a time to re-submit your RfA, and there's no reason to jeopardize your well deserved prestige over the understandable frustration of a previously unsuccessful nomination, whatever the reason was. But mostly, it hurts me to see a beautiful mind like yours to give in to anger. You are FAR better than that, I know. I also offer myself to help you, so next time you feel frustrated or angered, come to my Talk Page or private message me, and write something to me, no matter what. Clear your mind. It helps me to do so when I'm down. I promise I'll listen and help you if I can.

Molotov (talk) 22:42, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Shauri[edit]

Hi Shauri, I saw your comment on R.D.H.'s talk page. I'm happy that you remember me as a decent editor although, to be honest, I count that whole User:Cadorna and User:Molobo dispute as the lowest moment of my time with Wikipedia. I think that I utterly misjudged the situation and I was rather hacked off with the whole thing for a while afterwards. R.D.H. has brought me back from the brink though with his excellent article on the hononary Scot Richard O'Connor and his lavish praise for my minimal input. Leithp 00:18, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

More congrats[edit]

I'm glad you got promoted; I think we need more admins who work toward maintaining harmony and good relations on the wiki, and you certainly seem like you do! Delighted that my words could bring a smile; there are too many good editors I never run into who deserve more kind attention than they get. Also, I must ask -- what's in your hair in that user picture? :-) Mindspillage (spill yours?) 03:53, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OwenX's RfA[edit]

Thanks for supporting my RfA![edit]

Dear Shauri: Thank you so much for your support on my RfA. I am most honoured by the trust that has been placed in me by yourself and other members of the Wikipedia community. I promise to only use my administrative privileges to assist the community in doing good work, and also to be calm, considerate and careful in working to make Wikipedia a better place. I hope that, through my work as a mediator, I can help to disperse some of the wikistress that has afflicted some people lately; I feel privileged to receive your support in my mediation efforts. I very much look forward to working with you through the Mediation Cabal initiative. Thanks again, --NicholasTurnbull | (talk) (e-mail) (cabal) 01:47, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your heart[edit]

Wiki Wars[edit]

Your contribution was funny (and I shall definitely add it in), but the reason Nufy removed it was that it is way too in advance. Heck, we probably aren't even going to get up to that part of the script for another 6 or 7 days, the way it is going. --Maru (talk) 18:56, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

6 or 7 days, Maru? I find your lack of faith disturbing. Nufy8 23:36, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Enough of this, Lord Nufy! Release him! Shauri 23:49, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
As you wish. By the way, I noticed my vandal hit your user page; sorry for my indirect responsibility in that. I checked my user page's history and noticed that he's been at it for two months now. Wow, that's dedication. Not sure whether to laugh or cry, or possibly even both. You know what, I think I'll go with laughing. Nufy8 00:43, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there![edit]

Hi Shauri, just coming by to say "hello!". I assume you got my message? Anyway, I noticed on my talk page that you gave me a WikiThanks too. That was quite nice of you, and very appreciated. Have a great day! :-) --HappyCamper 20:12, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My Message on Ryan Norton's talk page[edit]

I was going to try for admin on October 21st, but I was advised not to, so I believe that if I won't be good enough then, then I won't ever be good enough. So I most likely never will, possibly for reasons of things in my personal life. It's nice to know that I'd be supported by atleast one person, if I ever decide to try. Private Butcher 23:39, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I know you aren't really paying attention to me anymore but, even if I did try to run for RfA (I really don't want to nominate myself, because I don't like when others do it, and I'd hate that I'd do it), I probably wouldn't get to be an admin, because of what my unpredictable personal life, which could make me leave wikipedia for long spans of time, at any moment (which haven't happened yet, thank God). So I won't ever self-nominate myself, I was advised not to and don't like it, so if someone ever nominates me (in probably a few years, since I'm not that special of a user), then I'd accept. But until then its still nice to know that I have one vote, maybe two. Private Butcher 00:50, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note on the talk page. It's great to know my work is being appreciated. I'm sorry for objecting at the moment. My number of objections may seem massive, but most of them are small points and some I've addressed myself (just mentioned them for your future work). Good luck and congratulations with a fabulous article. - Mgm|(talk) 21:39, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • If Tony objects again just point out that wikifying allows the user preferences to kick in and that the Manual of Style recommends wikifying dates for that particular reason. I might be busy with other stuff and forget to check back, so if you feel I need to look again, please leave another note on my talk page. - Mgm|(talk) 21:55, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shauri, thanks for the message! I'm alright - I hope you are too. I just voted in support on the article's FAC - I hope you don't mind my suggestions on cutting down the size (if it has to happen). I didn't feel comfortable enough to suggest turning the other sections (Mexican-American War, for example) into a summary as it looks so good in its complete form! By the way, have you considered creating a category for the Texas Ranger Division? There are certainly enough articles to warrant it. And yes, I really enjoyed the article (John Wayne would have, too - i'm sure he's reading it in spirit). I hope it makes FA status! Take care. SoLando (Talk) 03:39, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Shauri, thanks for the note on my talk page. You have such elegant prose - I just love it when you leave some well written words on my talk page! I am only sorry that my schedule has not allowed me to help you more on the Texas Ranger article. Now that you have nominated it for FA, I am swooping in at the last moment to help you get it voted in. However, I am arriving late to the battle as you have done such a fine job already. Looking at the RFA, I don't see any issues remaining that have not been addressed. You (and Katefan0 and the other contributors) have really done a fantastic job with a fascinating subject. I will watch and see if any more comments are made so I can help you resolve them. Johntex\talk 00:18, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dates[edit]

I think you misunderstood me with regard to date linking, what I suggested was linking full dates like October 13, 2005 and NOT just dates or months without a year (like August, 2005 or May 21 for example). Also, someone changed the word energically to energetically. I think it's not particularly needed as it may be construed as POV. I'll revisit the rest of the article tonight (it's now 10 am where I am). - Mgm|(talk) 07:57, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've just changed those dates, to how I think they should be wikified. The reason why I thought that some years should be repeated is that you can't expect readers to remember a specific year from the start of a paragraph and link that to a date. Especially when there's multiple years mentioned in the same paragraph. My beef with the image: it doesn't show off how impressive you say it is. The angle obscures all the background of its location and shows mostly the underside of the statue. I'd prefer another shot. - Mgm|(talk) 20:53, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • As I just told you, Mgm, I have much to thank you for, so don't worry about that. I promise I'll try to solve it. If Texas Ranger Division gets to FA, now (hopefully!) or later, you've surely played a major role in it. My warmest thanks, Shauri smile! 23:10, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind message!

I must say that I am always a bit suspicious when I see "world famous" in an article. Generally, that means "famous in the author's country", at best. I must also say that, from my experience of working in the US, and reading the US media, the over-use of "world famous" or similar is also a typical American trait. (Don't take this as an anti-American remark; I like the US a lot, but there's definitely a cultural trait of over-doing praise.)

Another of my concerns is the lack of plain language when discussing some unsavory parts of the Rangers' history. If I take, for instance, such as taking part in summary executions and confessions induced by extreme means:

  • It is imprecise: what does "extreme means" mean exactly? I can understand it to mean "torture", but this could be other things (like threatening to kill a suspect's family). Why not be precise?
  • It may be difficult to understand for people who do not have a strong habit of reading "between the lines". Imagine, for instance, a young teenager reading that. Will he understand the real meaning of this sentence?
  • It hides away unsavory detail in fluffy language.

Texas rangers[edit]

No, that's the worst thing to do to the History section. The history is detailed, and its best you move it to the [History of..] article. Since the history is already well written, you can nominate it for FAC next week. I've done the same for my articles, whenin I split an article and got both featured. A history section should never be fragmented as far as possible. Sentences such as In their early days, Rangers performed tasks of little significance.; However, the conviction of their usefulness had become firmly established, and the agency would eventually be reconstituted etc are redundant, so you'll need to cut down on such sentences, specific years, and less important people. Take a look at the India article which neatly summarises 6000 years. (I'm not asking you to cut it down to such a level). Its a pity I won't be active on wp anymore, or else I'd have summarised it for you. (I used to summarise a lot of articles before.) I would reccommend you not have subheadings in the article to make it neater (specifically in the History section). Thanks, =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:31, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I can't tell if 37 kb is ok or not right now, I review it as per the level of detail the article has. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:33, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
