Hi there. Posted a question at Talk:Current events. Thanks! -- RyanFreisling @ 01:57, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Re:RFA[edit]

From the barnstars page: The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar may be awarded to those that show a pattern of going the extra mile to be nice, without being asked. Not sure whether what you've done with nominating yourself at RfA quite counts, but it has been a welcome if surprising case of going the extra mile to defuse the recent bickering, so I feel like giving you this anyway! Grutness...wha? 11:39, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Damn - I see your user page is a barnstar free zone. Ah well, remove it if you wish, but the thought's there anyway. Grutness...wha? 11:44, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Grutness, you've persuaded me to place that barnstar on my userpage. The barnstar-free zone was intended to help stem the Proliferation of Barnstar Silliness, but your award is genuine, and genuineness should be acknowledged. Thanks! -- Seth Ilys 11:55, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My own renomination[edit]

I sincerely and wholeheartedly apologise if my own renomination for adminship has started a trend for which you are later held responsible: this was not my intention. Coming from a professional background of constant and ongoing review I have been distressed for some time that there is no system in place for review of responsibilities on Wikipedia, and have sought out such review for some time without success. In your renomination I saw an opportunity to seek out the opinions of others and act on them as deemed necessary. I am quite prepared to accept reciprocal action by other users if my own renomination is deemed an unfit use of the WP:RFA resource. -- Francs2000 | Talk 22:43, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading Image:KYMap-doton-Lewisport.PNG. Its copyright status is unclear, so it may have to be deleted. Please leave a note on the image page about the source of the image. Thank you. --Admrboltz 4 July 2005 20:26 (UTC)

Sharbat Gula images[edit]

Hi, unfortunately it seems that fair use may not reply to Image:SharbatGula1984.JPG and Image:SharbatGula2002.JPG, and as such I had to post it on WP:CP, please feel free to leave a note there if you can argue for fair use as I would like to save this image's use on wikipedia if at all possible. Thanks. Jtkiefer July 5, 2005 23:20 (UTC)

Dotmap for Galax, Virginia[edit]

If you're still doing dotmaps, can you fix this one? Kelly Martin 16:39, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

Beresford, South Dakota map is incorrect.[edit]

According to the history of the image file for the map (showing the location of Beresford in South Dakota), you are the one who originally submitted the image file for this map. The map is incorrect. The red dot on your map indicates that Beresford is located in Lincoln county, SD, next to the borders of Minnehaha and Turner counties; and, this is not true.

If you check your atlas (or Topozone map, or any other resource), you will see that Beresford is actually located on the border between Lincoln and Union counties, a short distance east of the border between Union and Clay counties in South Dakota. Most of Beresford (approximately two-third) is located in Union County (including the town's city hall); but, the northern third of the town's area is located in Lincoln county as well. The Beresford City Council has discussed the possibility of annexing land in the neighboring Clay county (to the west); but, this has not yet happened. The border between Union and Lincoln counties is located on SD Highway 46, which passes through the town of Beresford, SD.

Furthermore, I've been a resident of Beresford, SD for 23 years; so, I can personally vouch for the town's geographical location as described in the second paragraph above. I hope this helps to make the Beresford, South Dakota map more accurate. I've already added Union county to the categories listed at the bottom of the town's web page as well as two local Beresford links.

Important VFD[edit]

Please see the VFD for commons:List of victims of the 1913 Great Lakes storm. This is of vital importance. This list and others like it are being pushed off of the entire Wikimedia project. It started at Wikipedia, where they were VFDd in favor of moving to Wikisource/Commons. Now they are being VFDd off Wikisource (they don't really belong there, since they are not original source texts), with people there saying they should be on WP/Commons, and it is also being VFDd on Commons, where people don't realize that Commons accepts texts (says so right on the Main Page). This will set a precedent for any user-created lists. -- BRIAN0918  22:23, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Massachusetts[edit]

Hey Seth, I'm a new-ish Wiki map geek. I downloaded recently an outline map of Massachusetts from Redjar's site and I'd like to do a "space-filling" map for all the Mass towns like he's done for Vermont. I've already got it into PNG format, just need to do 351 maps. Shouldn't be too hard. ;) - Petros63

I put up a few prototypes - Barnstable, Massachusetts and Bourne, Massachusetts. What do you think? I'm concerned about the map taking up too much space but still being big enough to actually see the shape of the town. Petros63 04:23, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. The smaller size still looks pretty good, but I think it would look better right in the upper-right of the pages - compare to Brattleboro, Vermont. Is it standard to have the map midway down the page? My interface-geek side of me wants to put images in the upper right or upper left all the time. :) I'm actually going on vacation tomorrow for a couple weeks, but this will be fun to pick up with when I get back. Jay Cooke Image[edit]

Seth,

I would like to use the image of Jay Cooke in a historic panel about the Northern Pacific Railroad. Do you have a higher resolution photo that I could use?

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Request for Assistance in Dispute Resolution[edit]

Hello.

I don't know when you might get this message, but I see that you have previously been involved in the Lost Liberty Hotel article, and it's current undergoing a significant dispute. Your assistance in bringing it to a properly neutral POV would be greatly appreciated.

Removing article-per-episode of Babylon 5?[edit]

Seth,

Since you did most of the work on this, I wanted to run my proposal by you before doing anything hasty. Please see Talk:List of Babylon 5 episodes for my proposal that we only have specific wikipedia articles for "significant" bab 5 episodes (season openers and closers, movies, etc.), and just link to the Lurker's Guide for others. What do you think?

No, no Kevin here...[edit]

Nope. I'm actually a Yankee from Indiana. Jaccos Towne Lodge is where I hang my hat (used to be Wulakamike #21). Cheers. KC9CQJ 02:19, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Red Dots for Indiana[edit]

I saw that Indiana has not been Red Dotted and so I have been playing with maps a bit. If anyone would like to comment on my work, I have put a few pictures on my talk page. Marvin01 | talk 22:39, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Spoo Peer Review Request[edit]

Ahoy. As a renowned Babylon 5 fan and editor extraordinaire, I'd like your input, if any, into the Peer Review Request I've put up for Spoo. Many thanks for your time! --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> - 05:28, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up. I've got it on FAC now. It's doing well-ish, but if you like the article I could use more support. If not, I could use more input. Whatever's cool. Thanks! --Jeffrey O. Gustafson - Shazaam! - <*> 08:48, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

More Massachusetts[edit]

Hey, I'm actually pretty far along on the Massachusetts "dot" maps. I've got all of the maps created and am starting to upload them to the Commons. I have all the Barnstable County towns done, if you want to take a peek. Here's my question.. is there some way to use a bot to automate some of this stuff? I don't know much about 'em, but there has to be an easier way than doing Image:(town name) ma highlight.png|300px|right after the "Geography" header 351 times. Not that I'm unwilling to do so, mind you. :) Petros63 08:41, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New Orleans[edit]

Sorry to revert, but the city is preparing for total destruction. The hurricane has winds over 200 miles an hour and will competely flood the city, and since they can't shut down the petrochemical plants in time, the city will also turn into a toxic swamp until they can pump it out, predicted to be six months later. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 05:02, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Jack W. Smith[edit]

I was browsing the Cary, North Carolina pages and noticed that of all the council members, Jack W. Smith (among other things, the most senior) was the only one that was deleted after the recent VfDs. Since it seems like the consensus for the others was that the size of the city made it interesting enough to keep verified information, I was curious why the page hadn't revived.

WikiBreak[edit]

I'm just too pissed off about Angela and Anthere's callous attitude towards human life here to even be able to discuss it rationally. I'm blocking myself a week, for starters. -- Seth Ilys 18:11, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh Seth - Please don't leave. We need you around here. But if you must take a break, then please do so. I think that a compromise can be reached on the above issue though. --mav 22:38, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Seth, I really wish that you would reconsider. Like Mav, I believe that a compromise can be reached. Having met Angela and Anthere, I really believe that the way you are reading their remarks does not reflect their true attitudes. We need you to fight the good fight. Danny 02:39, 7 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Seth, please don't leave. :-( We miss you already. I really think that you're mis-reading what we're saying, however.

Just a word to say that while you are very upset at us, your comments truely hurted me.

I personally do not care you do not vote for me next time, because I am not currently planning to be a candidate again. It is too difficult, too much work for a working mom, for too little satisfaction and far too much rudeness from editors. I also do not care because I think that what is important is to build a truely sustainable organization and become a charity ourselves, in our own sense. Charity is not only about sending money to reconstruct a city, there are many ways to be a charity. Many mentionned hunger issues, diseases issues and so on. But in many sense, what brings sadness and pain over the world is the lack of knowledge, the lack of understanding and the lack of communication. And we can help on all these issues. We can bring knowledge to people, and knowledge will help these people. Don't you think I know which ones are suffering in New Orleans ? Mostly, the blacks, the poor, the old, the left aside. Usually also the less educated ones, who never managed to get a good job and could not even pay that bus ticket that might have saved them from much suffering. We can do more than that even. For many who participate to Wikipedia, there is also something learned. The community teaches us right now (*right now*) that we do not agree with each other all the time, and that does not mean the other is an ass. He has the right of his own thoughts and beliefs. And he has the right to be respected and talked to in a respectable way. Wikipedia makes us discover full power that there are people who think differently, and offers the opportunity to discover not only that they think differently, but also to explore why they think differently and to try to understand why.

When I lived in the USA, I thought most americans thoughts were just like mine. And I felt very confortable in that society.
After more than 3 years on Wikipedia, I discovered I was very far from truth. That not only did they thought differently, but on top, some had no idea of how I thought. And some did not give a shit. And some even thought me crazy for my thoughts. Believe me, it was a tough discovery. But I think I understand better now that I ever did.

I also think that upsetting people by my opinions is something I have to live with. There is no way I will transform myself in a carpet just to voice always only the politically-good ideas. I prefer to be consistant with my beliefs. If that means people hate me after a while and ask me to go away, I promise, I swear, I will go away. I am not so far from going away right now.

I understand you are currently very upset and hurt, but I just want you to realise that if you did not bring any financial relief to those guys, you brought pain here. I am pained being called inhuman. You never met me. You know very little of my own life. You know not what hurt me, or what I do not care about. You know nothing of my own involvement in other organizations. You know nothing of my own battles. Nothing of the battles won or lost by people I care about. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. People can have another life aside Wikimedia and making assumptions over what they are is not fair. I would like also to insist that NOWHERE I wrote that we should not do anything because those guys are americans. I think you were blind by your pain when you concluded this was the sense of what Angela and I wrote. It was not.

The only reason I did not delete my page myself is that I feel I have a responsability toward wikipedians right now. But in my heart, I lost the spirit. And virtually, my own page here is also deleted.

I understand that you took a wikibreak but please remember that blocking yourself to enforce a wikibreak is against Wikipedia:Blocking policy#When blocking may not be used. I assume I don't need to quote it and it would be practically insulting for me to do so also please note that this is just a little reminder I'm not making judgement nor am I trying to yell at you for it.
