Request

I am unable to find a solution on the "Frontline Magazine" entry. The contrarian edit opinion-maker is not willing to discuss in the "Discussion" page. Do revert back to my edit ( as I have already threshed out the points in the Discussion page). Template:Estonia Presidents

There seems to be an attack going on on {{Estonia Presidents}}. A group of editors from Estionia want to remove from Wikipedia any mention of the fact, that Arnold Rüütel was ever President of the Supreme Soviet or President of Estonia before his second term as president in 2001. This disruptive editing started at the article on Lennart Meri but has now also extended to the template. Could you keep an eye on the template. -- Petri Krohn 00:38, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Nauru

Looking through the Politics of Nauru article the system of government in this country is fundamentally different from Westminster System. A ceremonial head of state and a ruling Prime Minister is the key feature of W. system while in Nauru "the President is both the head of state and head of government". Bicameral parliament is probably not a must but its more Westminster-like than unicameral legislature (which is the case in Nauru). Why do you think that Nauru should be included in the list in spite of these substantial differences? Zello 22:25, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

See [1] for a list of pages that cite Nauru as a Westminster system. Yes, it is heavily modified because Nauru is a very small country, but the President's role is exactly that of a Westminster prime minister; the only exception is that he has the "head of state" role tacked on. It is not a presidential system because the executive is inextricably linked with parliament and the president has no mandate beyond the life of the particular parliament. —Sesel 22:31, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

I understand that it is not a typical presidential system but it's neither a typical Westminster System. Probably this is the Nauruan system of government :) I still don't think it a good idea to mention Nauru among the classic examples of Westminster System. Differences are way too significant. 1. Your reference does not say whether Tuva declared war officially to any Axis power. It only says it "entered" the war. It could have very well done so unoficially, helping its conquerors, the Soviets. In fact, my reference implies that there was only help provided to USSR, not an official war against the Axis: "During the Second World War she did much to mobilize the resources of the republic to help the USSR fight Nazi Germany." (Khertek Anchimaa-Toka) So no official war, only help provided to the USSR. Unless you come up with a clearer reference that Tuva declared official war on any Axis power, and hence fought officially in WWII, your edits to the article will be treated henceforth as vandalism and reported to the appropriate administrators.

2. You are perhaps not aware, but you violated the the three-revert rule, by reverting my changes 4 times in a less than 24 hours period. Please, undo your last revert unless you want me to report you first thing tomorrow morning to the appropriate board for a 24 - 72 hour edit ban. I won't be lectured by an uppity user with less than 100 edits. You obviously don't care about the facts; you just want a provocation. "It is sad that even Western accounts of World War II fail to mention either Tuva as a participant in the war (soldiers from that independent country fought on the Soviet-German front in 1943-44), or the expansion of the Soviet Union at the expense of Tuva's territory." (Soviet Studies, Vol. 44, No. 5, 1992, 881-895) I can only find two (non-academic) online sources that mentions a formal "declaration of war" (http://www.avantart.com/tuva and http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=105382) but if there wasn't one, there are plenty of wars that were not declared (Iraq War, for one). Somebody else pointed out that Tuva was not recognized as an independent state by the world, except for USSR (its creator) and Mongolia (another soviet nation). The list of heads of state engaged in WWII includes only those of independent states. Hence, Tuva does not belong in the article. If you have reliable references that Tuva was recognized during its independence by most world nations, please, past them either here or on the article discussion page. Burkina Faso

Why do you insist that Burkina Faso is a democracy ? Please read a history book, and you will easily find that it is a dictatorship under Blaise Compaoré who seized power in a murderous coup d'état 20 years ago. I would appreciate an explanation. I don't insist it's a democracy. I insist that it has a republican form of government. These are different things. Many republics are also dictatorships: Equatorial Guinea, North Korea, Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, and Uzbekistan to name just a few. You certainly can't accuse me of not knowing the history of Burkina Faso: Thomas Sankara is my greatest political hero. I own both editions of Thomas Sankara Speaks. I have studied the Burkinabè Revolution in great detail. If I had the time and resources, I would study and learn the French language just to be able to read Burkinabè documents in their original form. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the character of M. Compaoré's regime, but you or I can't impose our beliefs on Wikipedia articles due to the policy of WP:NPOV. —Sesel (talk) 03:31, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

I am glad to see that you support President Sankara and I apologize for assuming the contrary. However, I must disagree with your statement that a republic can exist without democracy. My dictionary says that a republic is "a political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them", and the dictatorship in Burkina certainly doesn't follow this model. It's all about theory. In theory, the Burkinabè people do not have a monarch and select their representatives to govern them. This is a republic. While the Compaoré dictatorship claims to allow the people to choose their own representatives in government, this is obviously not the case in practice. It's not about theory, but practice. One can't say that Burkina Faso or Equatorial Guinea is a republic, only that they claim to be republics. To label them republics would be to follow along with the positive masks used by Compaoré and Obiang to cover the reality. The purpose of an encyclopedia in my opinion should not be to talk about what things ought to be, but rather about what they really are. -74.79.7.214 (talk) 01:12, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

No one here can just pick and choose which countries are democratic and which aren't, which are de facto dictatorships and which aren't. I don't think the word "republic" has any particular positive connotation, except maybe in contrast to an absolute monarchy. Every internationally recognized state in the world without a monarch fits the objective criteria that define a republic, with one exception. I have been using your list as a guide for finding articles to write about, primarily Mexican politicians or historical figures. I am wondering how you find the names, or at least if you have more information about the people, at times I have trouble finding relevant information on the subject, or finding out who, out of a larger group of people with the same name, is relevant and requested. --I Write Stuff (talk) 14:22, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Most of the Mexican topics I listed come from Mexico: Biography of Power by Enrique Krauze. Yala name change

I noticed you changed the name of the Kumba Yala article a while back. I'm not so sure about this, because the common name should be used as the title, and the press is apparently continuing to use his old name. I left a note on Talk:Mohamed Ialá Embaló. I don't think we should draw conclusions based on a few months. For now, what he prefers to be called should be respected in my opinion. Many African politicians in the past have converted to Islam as a political tactic, changed their names, and later dropped the adopted names or converted back to their original religion anyway (e.g. Mathieu Kérékou, Jean-Bédel Bokassa).
