Parajanov[edit]

Can you point me to the interview with his wife that you mentioned? I assume you mean Svetlana Sherbatiuk? Thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 15:08, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's extra content on the RUSCICO DVD release of The Legend of Surami Fortress. Although they were divorced already by the time of arrest, but kept close ties (because of Suren). She makes it clear that homosexuality charges were fake. A young man no one knew (she recalls his last name as Vorobyev) was brought in court and testified that S.P. sexually harrassed him and tried to physically coerce him to homosexual intercourse. So it was fake, as were all previous charges—in 4 months that the trial went on the charges changed 2 or 3 times, from icon-smuggling to bribery and finally to homosexualism (prosecuted under the art.110 of Soviet criminal code). Tshcherbatiuk assumes that "they" settled on homosexuality because in Soviet prison hierarchy homosexuals were considered the lowest of the lot (except maybe rapists).
  • There really exists no solid proof that he was homosexual, except a couple of unconfirmed rumours and the homoerotic imagery in some of his later films and screenplays. And since Parajanov was famous for hoaxes, the rumors might have been as well triggered by the man himself. And it is absolutely certain that the reasons he was prosecuted and jailed in 1973 had litte to do with homosexuality—so could you please consider reverting back to my edit. As of now, I'm close to completing an article on Parajanov and maybe in a week or so I'll post on Wiki because current revision is subpar and almost completely unreferenced. There will be a separate section where i'm trying to go into detail about all three incarcerations of Parajanov (1947,1973-1977,1982). Semicolor (talk) 15:50, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Correction: just looked it up. he actually was sentenced for violating criminal code of Ukraine, art. 122 (Pederasty) and 211 (Production, sale & distribution of pornographic objects).
  • And once more: what i tried to emphasize in leading section is not that he was/wasn't homosexual, but that the whole case was botched. Was he prosecuted under homosexuality laws? Yes. But whether he was homosexual is irrelevant in this case. Parajanov wasn't flamboyant gay rights activist like Derek Jarman, neither is the topic of homosexuality (or even homoeroticism) central for his work—unlike, e.g. for the work of William S. Burroughs. Even if he was homosexual, he never liked to talk about it—to the point where no one (except close friends) really knows what the truth is. I've removed the "LGBT people" cat. The reason *why* he was prosecuted seem to justify that category, so I'm leaving it. I don't know much about him, so I defer to your obvious knowledge here :) May I point out, though, that: [1] is a lot of references to homosexuality. It at least deserves mention in the article.
Thanks for all your work! I'm going to keep the article on my watchlist, just so I can learn more about the man :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 23:28, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for referencing your claims! I've looked into it and some sources seem unreliable (e.g., one of them states year of his death as 1993), and the third from top goes like this: "Whether Paradjanov is in fact homosexual is not clear. A divorced man with a son, he is said to have admitted to being "partially homosexual" and to have ...", is said to have admitted being the key words here. The thing is, it's the Soviets who wanted the world and people to see and remember Parajanov as gay, and certainly not he himself, because all of his own references to his "untraditional" orientation were either jocular (before imprisonment) or vague and scarce (after release). Due to encyclopedic nature of WP and especially the ultimately tragic impact it had on his life, his (alleged) homosexuality certainly deserves mentioning. I'll try to make some more research on this issue to clarify the matter later in the article. Semicolor (talk) 00:33, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Works for me! And again - thanks! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 00:54, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
