Images[edit]

Hello!

Thanks for uploading some pictures to Wikipedia. I wanted to make sure you were aware of some of the requirements and good practices for uploaded images.

Pick an image name.

When uploading an image, pick a file name that is descriptive, and unique. Remember that many images may be uploaded about the same topic, and remember that names are case sensitive.

Source the image.

On the image description page, explain where the image came from. If you created the image yourself, then say so. If it's from the web, give a URL. If it's a screenshot of a movie or game, or a scan from a book, give the title.

Provide copyright and license information.

This part is a little bit trickier, but it's very important. The copyright of the image generally belongs to whomever created it.

If it's a photograph you took, or an image you created (modifying an image that already exists doesn't count) in software like Photoshop or GIMP, then you own the copyright. To upload it to Wikipedia, you must agree to license it under the GFDL (which allows anyone to use it, but requires that they give credit to the original author and requires that any further edit to the image be licensed under the GFDL as well) or release it into the public domain (which allows anyone to use it for any purpose without restriction.) Do this by placing an appropriate tag on the image description page, like {{GFDL}} or {{PD}}. Be sure to mention that you created the image. If you're using {{PD}}, you may also want to use {{NoRightsReserved}}, since there is some dispute as to whether one may grant items into the public domain.

If you didn't create the image, or the copyright somehow belongs to another party (like a screenshot, which you might "create", but the copyright belongs to the author of the movie or video game), then you need to find another tag that describes the copyright status of the image. Images used on Wikipedia need to be free for our use and the use of sites which reproduce our content. This means that images cannot have a restriction such as "only for use by Wikipedia", or "for non-commercial use only", or "for educational use". Images without a free license may be usable in certain articles under fair use, but such a use should be justified on the image description page.

Describe the image.

To another reader, the image may not be immediately understood. A caption in an article doesn't explain the image to a visitor who sees it on its image page. Put a brief explanation of what is in the image on the image description page, similar to what you might include in a caption on an article.

Book covers[edit]

Please reduce the resolution of the images, the fair use license says: "It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of book covers ... qualifies as fair use". Otherwise they are not acceptable. Thank You. feydey 13:18, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can delete the high resolution image Image:Tintin Cover - The Red Sea Sharks.jpg (that's .jpg) and others, by adding {{db-author}} to the image's page You uploaded and want to delete. NB. Remember to edit the articles then too (.jpg --> .JPG). feydey 18:23, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Comics looks like the place for help, use the talk page or You could use Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous) by putting a note there. Or You could do so in the The_Adventures_of_Tintin talk page to ask for help. But remember things happen slowly in Wikipedia, do not hope that 10 editors jump to this immediately, probably one interested person will contact You in a week or so. From what I can gather, you want to start a Wikiproject. First read the guidelines on the page and be sure that this is what you want to do. Once decided, you can add the request at the list of proposed projects. If you are unable to find enough interested people, you can work with Wikipedia:WikiProject Comics and still achieve what you want to do. Best of luck. Unspecified source for Image:RickRubin.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:RickRubin.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Regarding Tintin books[edit]

Hi, thanks for offering to help with the change of the infoboxes (I indeed still need to do the last 7 or so). As for links: for ISBNs, I use Amazon (.com for English versions, .fr for French versions). The original publication dates, I get from the French comics catalogue (the BDM), which isn't available online, but I check it usually with sites like Tintinologist or Bdoubliées. I'll try to get to it today, before The Adventures of Tintin hits the main page. Fram 06:09, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A source for the translations (publishers, years, names of translators) is [1], a page by a journalist of The Comics Journal. I have now changed the last few remaining infoboxes, but I still need to add publication hiostory and ISBNs. Note to the admins/unblocker: The IP addresses 203.110.243.21 as well as 203.110.246.230 are Proxy adresses of IIT Kharagpur. Often one of them experiences a downtime and the other has to be used. Hence please make an arangement so that the user is blocked instead of the IP address.

Sorry, but it's beyond our control if vandals at your university keep on triggering the autoblocker. Fair use rationale for Image:WWB-boyzone.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:WWB-boyzone.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box.
