आल्हा-उदल के पिता बक्सर के अहीर थे तथा उनकी शादी ग्वालियर के अहीर राजा की पुत्री से हुआ था ।भाव पुराण मे कहा गया है कि यह न केवल आल्हा और उदल की माताएँ हैं, जो अहीर हैं, बल्कि बक्सर के उनके पैतृक पिता भी अहीर हैं। जो कुँवारी भैंसों से नहीं बल्कि उनके नौ में से आने वाले देवी चंडिका के आशीर्वाद से परिवार में प्रवेश करते हैं। -उन्होंने नौ दुर्गाओं की प्रतिज्ञा की और इसलिए अहीर परिवार के स्वाभाविक रिश्तेदार थे। इसमें से कुछ इलियट के आल्हा के साथ जाँच करते हैं, जहाँ गोपालक (अहीर) राजा दलवाहन को दलपत, ग्वालियर का राजा कहा जाता है। वह अभी भी दो लड़की के पिता हैं, लेकिन केवल दासराज को देते हैं जो अहीर और बच्छराज थे जब पायल ने उनसे अनुरोध किया था। रानी मल्हना जोर देकर कहती है कि राजा परमाल ने चन्द्र भूमि के भीतर से दुल्हनों को बछराज और बछराज को पुरस्कृत किया। ग्वालियर के राजा दलपत अपनी बेटियों देवी (देवकी, आल्हा की माँ) और बिरमा उदल की माँ की सेवा करते हैं। रानी मल्हना देवी का स्वागत करती हैं महोबा में उनके गले में नौ लाख की चेन (नौलखा हर) डालकर बिरमा को हार भी देती हैं। राजा परमाल तब नए बाणपार परिवारों को एक गाँव देते हैं जहाँ वे आल्हा और उदल नाम के अपने पुत्रों को पालते हैं और उनकी परवरिश करते हैं।

(जसराज) और दिवला (देवल दे) के पुत्र हैं। कन्नौजी पाठ के अनुसार आल्हा का जन्म दशपुरवा (दशहर पुर, महोबा की सीमा पर एक छोटा- सा गाँव) में हुआ था। आल्हा की जन्म तिथि जेठी दशहरा बताई जाती है। आल्हा से ऊदल लगभग बारह वर्ष छोटा था। पिता की हत्या के बाद उसका जन्म हुआ था।
