Introduction to contentious topics[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Hi, I'm sorry, I'm new at this and definitely don't want to cause any issues. Can you please let me know what are the contentious topics that I have added, so that I can remove them immediately. Also, I'm a little stuck and would appreciate your help.

Since this person that I'm editing is a retired professor a lot of his coverage is in old magazines that I have scans and PDF's of but the magazine hasn't got them put up on it's website any longer. And I don't really have the copyright to those so how do I upload them, as I only want to upload to prove the person's authenticity as cited by others.

Hi, Sankalprawal! Any content about a living or recently deceased person (called a "BLP") is considered a contentious topic on Wikipedia. That means content in articles, Talk pages, noticeboards, anywhere. It's especially important that we get content about BLPs correct and that everything is properly sourced, because anything we write here can affect them more than, for example, someone who's been dead for a hundred years. Administrators have more leeway when dealing with editors in contentious topics, like blocking editors who vandalize articles about BLPs.

Now this doesn't mean you've done any harm. The notice is simply to make you aware that these articles (and anyone who edits them) are under greater scrutiny. You'll be expected to be generally familiar with our policies and guidelines—and in the case of BLPs, specifically familiar with our policy on content about living and recently deceased people. (I suggest reading that last link thoroughly.)

As far as sources go, old magazines should be fine. (They don't need to be online. Please don't scan and upload them yourself, as that would be a copyright violation.) Read through Wikipedia:Citing sources and make sure to cite them completely. If you have questions about which sources are and aren't appropriate, you can ask at the Reliable Sources noticeboard. In general, the sources we're looking for are from reputable publishers who are independent of the subject. Our page on reliable sources may help here.
