Bot request[edit]

Can you follow up on your comments made on the Bot request page, with the section Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Category:Queensland_Rugby_League_State_of_Origin_players.

I don't mind if you say no, but I'd just like a reply. If you do say no, I will go through and do it manually. SpecialWindler talk 08:55, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

inadvertantly removing colons[edit]

This edit of yours [1] removed a colon from the category reference, placing the page in the category. That seems wrong to me. Also, do you know where this move was discussed? I've looked and can't find it. I think it's a perfectly fine move but am curious as to the discussion, thanks. ++Lar: t/c 03:24, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lar, first of all let me thank you for fixing my mistake. I don't really know how I managed to screw that one up since I actually remember doublechecking those edits. I guess my typically espresso-infused brain must have been craving for more caffeine. ;) Anyway, thanks for picking up my slack. I'm afraid there wasn't much of a discussion though. Category:Administrators open to recall was speedily renamed to Category:Wikipedian administrators open to recall (please see this listing on WP:CFDS). There has also been some discussion at the category's talk page. In fact, the edit you mention was part of an attempt to fix some redlinks created by the move (which, in turn, was done by my bot) before the redirect was in place. --S up? 10:05, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers for that info. If I spot any others, I'll fix them. I had let you know because I thought it was bot changed rather than manual and that you might need an algorithm tweak. ++Lar: t/c 14:36, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Anytime. :) And thanks for letting me know. S up? 14:38, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seedbot edit summary glitch[edit]

Hey there. I just noticed that the edit summary from Seedbot when it removed categories is wrong here, here, here and here, as the only category removed in each instance was "Category:Eponymous albums". It is correct for example here and notably here though. This leads me to believe the bot uses the incorrect edit summary when the category is included as "[[category:..." as opposed to "[[Category:...". Just thought you'd like to know. --PEJL 15:36, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PEJL, thank you very much for bringing that to my attention - I really appreciate it. That does indeed look like a bug (kind of a weird one, too). I'll definitely look into it. Cheers S up? 18:50, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong date given in edit summary from Seedbot[edit]

On recategorising pages from Category:Bus companies to Category:Bus operating companies, which is in the CfD log for July 5, I notice that the CfD link in the edit summary instead points to the log for July 4. Is this a fault in the bot itself? Or was there a human error in the parameters it received? Just curious... Quackdave 18:02, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Palmer – Blue Eyed Soul[edit]

Hello there. I noticed that a bot had removed one reference to 'blue eyed soul' that I added to the Robert Palmer page but left the one in info box on the right. I'm afraid I'm still learning the ropes here and I couldn't quite follow the 'Blue Eyed Soul'-discussion page. Should I remove the second reference? Cheers. Doozy88 20:46, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I read the info now about POV and I see what ya mean. You and I both know its the truth but expecting the other readers to agree is a tough thing. What I done is went back and rewrote the thing but I changed the words. Everyone agrees that something has to be written about her beauty, otherwise they wouldn't know an important fact. Cheers bud. bot request[edit]

You may remember doing the Category:Queensland Rugby League State of Origin players, tagging every page with that category.

Well it appears I forgot the other team, so I put a request on the WP:BOTREQ page, to do the same thing except for this page New South Wales state rugby league team players for this category Category:New South Wales Rugby League State of Origin players.

Thanks SpecialWindler talk 03:25, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, how are you doing? You seem to have removed the "Jewish American journalists" cat for [[Jeff Greenfield] and left only "American journalists," completely removing any category relating to Greenfield's Jewish heritage. I have a feeling you've done that to dozens, if not hundreds of other individuals' articles as well. If you're going to use a bot, can you please program it carefully so that we do preserve the proper cats -- in this case it would be replaced with two cats: "American journalists" and "Jewish Americans." I and many others would appreciate if you'd go back and do that for all the other articles, thanks. Badagnani 20:28, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replied to at user's talk page. --S up? 14:50, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I'm unfortunately all too familiar with the "I'm just a janitor" response/defense and find it just as disgusting as when any other category deleter rampages through categories without fixing them properly (one by one, replacing with the proper upper-level remaining categories) for future users. I've not once encountered an individual doing what you're doing who admitted an error or actually followed through and corrected him/herself. It's not a question of "being a janitor" but doing what is right. I find it excrable that you apparently find it just fine to perform such "janitorial" work while neglecting the actual cleanup, done properly, to ensure maximum usability by editors in the future. I have the best interests of our encyclopedia and its users foremost in my mind and am far from convinced (from the lack of accountability of users such as yourself) that it is also the case for yourself. I now have to go through, by hand, and replace remaining Jewish categories for hundreds, if not thousands of articles when your bot could just as easily have done this in the first place. I've had to do this before, and been through the same song and dance with the category deleter: "Well, I wasn't specifically told to do that, and, by the way, it would be so hard to go in and examine all the articles one by one, doing it by hand..." The irony is, I'll have to do that now! It's a question of "right" and "wrong," and you're in the wrong, no matter what kind of "janitorial" defense you might make. You really do have to think about our users, and the fact that what you're doing is fixing one thing while breaking another. Badagnani 01:03, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BOT and NYT[edit]

Your bot is making changes that break working links of 2006 and adding links to 2007 that do not exist like July 29. --Drappel 22:25, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your BOT[edit]

S, I noticed that the category for Category:Battles and operations of the 2003 Iraq conflict changed to Category:Battles of the 2003 Iraq conflict. I do not agree with renaming this category. There are many operations that are not battles. Some are humanitarian missions to provide food, medicine or services to the Iraqi people, some are classifications (such as the ones for Canadian, British or australian participation) and some are simple searches or security operations were no or limited fighting occured. I notice that someone ran a bot that is changing the category for the new name and I recommend we stop it before the true battles are lost in an unrecognizable blur.--Kumioko 00:25, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello S. I'd like a quick word of advice. I've been working on the Klaus Kleinfeld page and someone keeps vandalising it. I don't want to get into a tit-for-tat edit war so I thouhgt I'd ask an expert. What do you think I should do? Cheers. Doozy88 19:34, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
