Baja California

Thanks for the feedback. Actually, my "source" for Baja California is the Spanish language article, which doesn't have any sources either. Don't know what to do in that case . . . The preceding unsigned comment was added by Xabuneqis (talk • contribs) .

Esperanza Elections

Hello Rune! Thank you for supporting me in the ongoing Esperanza elections. Your trust in my actions means a lot, especially since I pretty much failed at being an admin coach! Don't worry: I'll find time to show you the path to the cabal headquarters... Anyways, thank you very much. Regards, Bratschetalk 21:10, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FLC note on my talk

Thank you! It is very kind of you. You would not believe me, but I dreamt something tonight about being a bit too harsh on the FLC comments :) And here I find your relaxing message... Phewww :) No wonder you are an important part of Esperanza. Renata 13:44, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I've contacted the Swedish FA to check if they have any free license images of the trophy the champions get (Lennart Johansson's Trophy). That should surely be a suitable image to add to the article. It also looks like any non-art-image taken in Sweden before July 1, 1944 is in the public domain (see {{PD-Sweden}}) so I guess one or two photos of champions from the early years would be nice. -- Elisson Talk 15:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the pictures and tagged the trophy picture with the appropriate tag and added a fair use rationale. Hope that is what you asked for. :) -- Elisson Talk 19:36, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin Coaching

Hey! How's everything. You never told me if you had any questions about the lesson I gave you... so, was everything clear? Do you have any questions? Titoxd(?!? - help us) 05:53, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrights

Well, usually, I would think that the next lesson encompasses copyright problems, but as you have corrected me in that aspect of Wikipolicy in the past, I don't know how much I could be of help in that. However, the process itself asks for copyright violations to be listed on Wikipedia:Copyright problems. If you encounter a cut-and-paste copy of another commercial website (meaning, we have little chance of getting a release for the content), it is speediable if it has been uploaded within the last 48 hours, and then you have to warn the uploader with {{nothanks-sd}}.

As for your question, yes, there is a centralized log, and you already know about it: Just go to Special:Log, and type "Rune.welsh" in the User: field (if you want to see actions done to you, type User:Rune.welsh in the Page: field, including the User: prefix!). You will get a page that looks like this. This should have all your logs (page moves, blocks, protections, etc.) in one place. Any questions? Titoxd(?!? - help us) 07:28, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mopping

Interesting question. The thing I would have liked to know the most before being an admin would be how to actually do the admin tasks themselves. It took me a while to remember the difference between Special:Blockip and Special:Ipblocklist; also, I didn't know that while you have to block a user through Blockip, the only way you could unblock him was through Ipblocklist. That reminds me about another thing: if you're trying to see deleted edits, you look at the page's history, then click on the "View or restore χ deleted edits" box. Don't click on the delete or undelete tab, as it is not visible through there. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 23:00, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why, thank you. I'm planning on doing this for every month, but due to recent complications I don't have much free time to edit on Wikipedia. A collaboration between the two of us would be an easier way to get this things done. Would you want to help me write March so it is ready before it comes around? Image Tagging for Image:Ignacio_Allende.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Ignacio_Allende.jpg. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.

Peer review of Mexico metro

Hey, great awesome list! Gets my support right away :) But here is some ways to even be more awesome :)

  • Maps are really cool, and I think the main map could even go to WP:FPC, but there is this one little "but"... the balck background. Since it's png I assume Panchosama has it as svg and that would not be that hard to change it.
  • Also, on the maps every station has a little icon. Why don't have it separate and use to decorate every subway station entry? They are already created, just cut from the maps... And if it's really svg it will not be too hard to magnify. (more work for poor Panchosama...) I noticed that individual articles use gif and claim it as fair use. Would it be possible to have "free" alternatives?
  • I wonder if there is any photos of the acctual cars. Mexico City Metro has two. Any more?
  • I know that there is no space, but a reeeeeally nice touch would be the station name origin. I don't speak Spanish so it would be nice to know what it means.
  • There is a minor formatting glitch when pictures create a wide gap between introductory text and the table. I will find a solution myself.

Conclusion: don't aks for my reviews :) If seriously, veeery nice. Waaaay better that London when it got promoted. So you get my support :) Renata 00:32, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I dream that your attention would shift one day to one of Lithuania related topics :P BTW, "Kind of a central place where to start working from" - that's really my definition of a really good list. I hope the images will play out well and you won't have to redo anything. Anyways, good luck. Renata 03:31, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey RuneWelsh,

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Wiki editing, so I wasn't sure where to respond to the note you left on my talkpage; hope you get this one. Regarding your question, I'm not in Mexico City, but if you want info on those lines, you can take a look at my Google Earth map, where I have all of the stations located, and you can see which are above-ground or not, and it's fairly easy to tell which stations are elevated (ask me if you need help). Great work on the List of Stations page, btw.

  • Regarding the station names origins mentioned above, I could translate the info found on the STC site, if you need it (for each station).
  • I have all of the metro station logos cut out (that's how they appear in my Google Earth KMZ), but I'm not sure how to get them to be "free", as mentioned above. Any tips in regards to this would help, so that we can put them up. Also, I got all the images for the Xochimilco line, as well as the Metrobus stations, if you'd like (again, not sure about the proper licensing, though).
  • Any way we could communicate by email? I'd prefer it to here, because I'm still new and not sure if I'm able to dedicate much time to learning wiki editing, so I could just email you the pics or something, for example. Let me know!

Advise on image copyright

Hi Carnildo, I was hoping you could help me figuring out the proper copyright status of this image (Image:Metro system.png) before I send List of Mexico City metro stations to FLC. The problem here, is the use of the station logos in the map. Since they were created to identify the stations I'd assume it would not be a problem if they were distributed in this context, but then I only know so much about copyright law in the US...

Note that the layout itself is not a problem, since that's how the lines are actually laid on the city, and this is just a redrawing.

Many thanks! -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 15:06, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It looks good to me, although the image description page should have a note that the logos are not the creation of the author. My concern is the choice of font for the map: on a high-resolution monitor like mine, the lettering of the station names is almost unreadable. --Carnildo 00:42, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
