I hope that someone will drop in to answer this question. When I post something, I now know that I should sign it by using the four tildes. But I did that and I find that my posts are still listed as unsigned.

Also, this article is very confusing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Signatures I just want to know what I must do to sign an article.

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. I hope that the first paragraph will be revised to add that while there is currently doubt that Peary reached the Pole, the "Recreation of expedition in 2005" paragraph suggests that this doubt may be misplaced. As the article stands today, a reader would not know this unless he read the article down to that section, almost at the end. As it stands now, the first paragraph is not a fair summary, as it should be. rumjal 05:06, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Tower houses of Scotland[edit]

Thanks Rumjal for your comments at Talk:Tower house. I'm interested in your reference to a "lost" article on the tower houses of Scotland. I don't remember any article particularly about this topic, and I'm not sure what you mean by a "30 to 50 page article". You may be thinking of the List of castles in Scotland, which certainly still exists, or the 350 or so articles about individual castles in Scotland? Either way, articles are never "lost" until they get deleted, which seems unlikely with this topic unless it was a copy of something from another website, as the page histories are retained indefinitely. Hi Jonathan, I hope that you get this reply. I was not sure whether to post it here or on your talk page. I still know far less about Wikipedia than I would like.

In regard to your comment, some years ago I was delighted to come across a Wikipedia article on the smaller castles of Scotland which included a long discussion of the tower houses.

I merely bookmarked this article instead of printing it out. But this is a great interest of mine and it did not occur to me that it would vanish. But it did. Some time later, the bookmark failed to work and the article on Towerhouses of Scotland vanished without explanation.

I was so unhappy about this that the next time I came across an article like it, I saved both the article and the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L_Plan_Castle

By the way, this article needs work http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-plan_castle

You can reply here or on my talk page, either way. I'm afraid I am no closer to knowing what happened to this Tower houses of Scotland article. If we knew the article name, it would be easy to find the page history, or the deletion log if it got deleted. But without, it is a much harder proposition, and I'm not really sure of how to go about it. You may want to ask at the Help desk where someone more knowledgeable than I may be of assistance. Thank you for your advice. I will check the Help desk. I wish that I had archived the name of the article, but when I came across it, I knew very little about Wikipedia and had only been here once or twice before, so I did not even save the bookmark when it failed to work again. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
