Disambiguation link notification for December 21[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited William R. King, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Frontispiece. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:10, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help[edit]

this is Royal Autumn Crest. I was trying to reset my password, but I do not have an email set up here. Please help.

If you did not have an email associated with your account in its Preferences, there is nothing that can be done. If you are unable to recall the password, you will need to create a new account and identify it as a successor to your old account("I am Username123", I was previously Royal Autumn Crest"). 331dot (talk) 15:23, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome.[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. I’m not sure how you would see my reply unless you refreshed the page, can you explain how I can see replies and be notified that my replies have been viewed? My question on the talk page also was “ Thanks for the welcome. Is there a list of articles that may need editing or reviewing? My new year resolution is to make at least five quality edits on Wikipedia per day. I want to help in any way I can.” cheers. Kangarooooooooo (talk) 00:30, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your welcomes[edit]

Why are you welcoming users like THEFROGDOG who aren't making constructive contributions? User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 23:00, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@: I generally don't look at the edit histories. If there's a red link on their talk page, I try to assume good faith and let them know the rules. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 00:14, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see several users welcomed who have no edits at all, welcoming users with no edits is generally discouraged. How are you finding these users? I encourage you to check edit histories before welcoming users; trust but verify and all that. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 00:16, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@: I look at the recent changes log. I appreciate you reaching out to me on this and I agree that the behavior of non-constructive editors should be addressed. However, it's easy to block or checkuser an account if the non-constructive user continues their behavior, if it's just a new user not aware of how things work around here, they deserve a warning. Best case scenario, they turn into constructive editors, worst case scenario, a few minutes of time are wasted. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 00:21, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the Welcome[edit]

Hi RAC, Thanks I appreciate it. I always check the pages for artists and albums. I just make minor edits for things like grammar and bad links and sometimes incorrect info. Kind of fun to contribute as I always get a lot from the reading which turns me on to new artists and albums to enjoy. ProbecksProbecks (talk) 19:22, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FYI[edit]

If you are really curious, and really bored, you can find some background on the infamous userbox wars at: 1, 2, 3, 4. Some additional wreckage is visible at 1, 2, 3, 4. And of course there's also Wikipedia:Userbox migration. Due to circumstances beyond my control my IP is currently hopping randomly all over eastern europe, so It's somewhat unlikely that I'll be able to follow up on any inquiries, sorry about that. @Royal Autumn Crest: Curious, should my content meet standards, roughly how long does it take for it to publish on Wiki? Rhandle (talk) 19:54, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rhandle: It's immediate. Check general notability standards and ask around with other editors if you're not sure if your article is ready to head into article space. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 20:22, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Royal Autumn Crest: The article does meet standards. Being a newbie, I created the article in my Sandbox, then sent it for editorial review. Thus, it's not on Wiki yet, at least as far as I can tell. How do I push it into article space? Rhandle (talk) 20:48, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rhandle: go up to the search bar and type in what you'd like the title of the article to be. It should say something somewhere that it doesn't exist, would you like to create it? Click on that - it will send you to the space where you will put in the article. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 20:51, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Kurt Cobain[edit]

While I won't revert your edit to Kurt Cobain again, you might want to consider that it not only says one shop sold 20 Nirvana CDs but that they were sold on April 8 which was the same day that his death was announced. The store which sold a "few hundred" did so the next day, April 9, which was the day after his death.QuintusPetillius (talk) 18:06, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@QuintusPetillius: I think noting the difference between the two days is appropriate. What I saw written was that only 20 CDs were sold and that additional context was not there. Selling 20 CDs in a day isn't noteworthy, but a large spike is worth including. Thank you for reaching out. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 18:14, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of National Night[edit]

Hello, I have proposed that this article that you marked as a stub be deleted.

Notice

The article National Night has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

article is a stub, has very little information, and does not meet the Wikipedia guidelines. It also has not received significant coverage.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Handing out welcome templates[edit]

Hey, I noticed you gave a welcome template to someone who hadn't edited yet here. They might not ever edit; there's even a possibility that they could vandalize articles. That's why we typically don't give a welcome template to people who haven't edited yet.

If you sign up to be a mentor at this link, you can give out {{mentor welcome}} to editors on your mentor dashboard who haven't edited yet; I've heard of at least one mentor who has talked people through their first edit on other language Wikipedias, so there's some justification in giving a welcome template to someone who hadn't edited yet, in spite of the risk. Here are the instructions to add the "mentor welcome" template to Twinkle; however, you'll have to press save not once, but twice during the process. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 01:40, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@I dream of horses: Hi, I've said this to a few other people, but I have to disagree with you in regard to welcoming people because we assume good faith with newcomers. If the newcomers are on Wikipedia for nefarious reasons, they can be given instruction on how to correct their behavior or they can be blocked. If that specialized message you mentioned is useful toward that goal, I'm happy to use it. But I'm not going to stop assuming good faith toward newcomers. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 11:58, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@I dream of horses:Signed up for the mentorship dashboard. Please let me know the next step. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 12:02, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not only is there a risk that you might accidentally reinforce challenging behavior, there's the whole "Thank you for your contributions," message in most welcome templates (not {{mentor welcome}}, I doubled checked!), and it's like, which contributions? They haven't done anything yet. Perhaps I should've emphasized that more. Sorry about that.
I've also had the experience of giving someone a warning for vandalism, and the vandalism accelerating/experiencing harassment afterwards. So have others. Not everyone truly has an understanding that negative attention exists; all attention is good attention in their eyes, hence the phrase "Wikipedia:Our social policies are not a suicide pact." At least with the mentor dashboard, 90% of registered newcomers don't get a mentor, and the remaining 10% get divided among the active mentors, so that reduces the chances of getting someone acting in bad faith by a lot. If you're going to do this, you'll need to do it with sense. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 22:23, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Add {{welcome mentor}} to twinkle with the instructions I've already added above. For your convenience, I'll repeat it down here: Here are the instructions to add the "mentor welcome" template to Twinkle; however, you'll have to press save not once, but twice during the process. You can do so at Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences#welcome.
  1. Filter the dashboard to only show mentees with 0-100 edits that were active within a day. Creating an account counts as activity according to the mentor dashboard.
  1. If they don't have a talk page yet, they get a {{Welcome mentor}} template from you.
  1. Watch their talk page for at least 24 hours after placing a welcome template. At Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences#welcome, you can have the talk page watched temporarily or permanently.
  • There's a multi-choice window on the right that adjusts how many mentees you get (half of average, average, twice than average). Leave that alone until you figure out approximately how many of them will ask you questions.
  • There's also a way to 'pause' mentorship if you're on Wikibreak. Good to use if you're busy, on vacation, stressed out, sick, etc. The mentees just get temporarily assigned a new mentor, so it's okay to do this. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 22:23, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@I dream of horses: That's fair. If someone hasn't made contributions, it may be confusing if someone thanks them for their contributions. I can also agree that negative behavior shouldn't be reinforced, although I think newcomers should be given the benefit of the doubt and get warnings. Best case scenario: they can be rehabilitated. Worst case scenario: no one can say they weren't given a chance to correct their conduct. I'll try to figure out the twinkle stuff. Also - is there a way to easily look at people making vandalism edits via twinkle or some other coding that can be added? Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 23:48, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's the philosophy of the {{subst:uw-vandalism}} series, actually. Unfortunately, they don't often work; nearly all vandals are drunk teenagers/adults and unsupervised little kids who legitimately think bad faith editing is funny. They either do a drive-by vandalism and never do it again, regardless of whether or not they get warned, or they get blocked after given a chance to correct their conduct.
Twinkle adds a "warn" tab close to the top of the page when you view userspace. No need to add more coding. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 07:40, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think regardless of the situation, it's important to follow the process, if not for the hope of rehabilitation (like in those situations you mentioned), then for the sake of standardization - they want attention. Treating those situations with a lack of emotion is important: if they continue to vandalize, there will be consequences, and if they decide to edit appropriately, that should be encouraged as well, but either way it's best just to revert the vandalism, post the warning and move on. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 17:04, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Right, hence why {{subst:uw-vandalism}} exists. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 19:49, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkle welcome not working[edit]

@I dream of horses: tried to put a stripped down welcome into twinkle, but it is not working. Please advise. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 17:24, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mind if I talk a look at the template first? You can link to it with {{tl}}. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 19:51, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot find it now. Just do me a favor, give me a step by step on how to do this. Your links above didn't help me. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 21:55, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at your contributions, I don't think you created the template? I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 02:07, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I may not have, I have no idea. Here are the steps I did before, let me know where I went wrong.
  • Go to Wikipedia:Twinkle/Preferences
  • Go down to Custom welcome templates to display
  • Click "edit items"
  • Then I copy/pasted everything from the normal welcome, minus the "I saw your contributions and I hope you want to stay" and called it "royal welcome" (per the first part of my user name)
  • Then, click save changes.

Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 03:05, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You're supposed to have already created a template, in the Template namespace. If you click on, for example, {{mentor welcome}}, you'll notice the title of the page starts with Template:. Then you're supposed to put the name of the template in the "Custom welcome templates to display," minus the "Template:" prefix.
It'd probably be easier for you if you stuck to only welcoming newcomers that are your mentee with {{mentor welcome}}, at least for now and for the most part. Just add {{mentor welcome}} to the custom welcome templates. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 04:07, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy to offer that mentorship to everyone, but if I can't make it work, I'm just going to stick with giving welcome messages to all new users. If there's an easy way to differentiate new users that are vandalizing versus new users that aren't, I'm happy to provide the other message as well, but otherwise, I'm happy to stick with what I've been doing. I'll give the template another shot and if you could give me a step by step like I asked, I would appreciate that. I think you are trying to help me here, just like I want to help the new users and I want to show my gratitude by trying to understand this process you're discussing here. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 05:47, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I'm assuming good faith. Part of assuming good faith is assuming others are doing the same. Most accounts aren't going to edit, even if you add a welcome template. Just wait until they edit. You can't offer mentorship to literally everyone, anyway; it's impossible. I don't think you're being that literal, though.
Step by step instructions:
  1. Get the "Custom welcome" dialog prompt to show up. I think you've done this before.
  2. Click "add"
  3. Add {{mentor welcome}} to the custom welcome Twinkle display panel. Just add the words "Mentor welcome" under "Template name (no curly brackets)"
  4. Click the "save changes" button on the dialog prompt
  5. Click "save changes" on the bottom of the page.
I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 06:01, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I will do anything I can to help anyone that asks for my help provided that I can give it and that they want it. I can't speak to mentorship or not beyond that in regard to that help, but I will always do what I can. I appreciate your help here. I'll ping you again if there are any issues. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 10:44, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 21:17, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mentorship[edit]

Hello Royal Autumn Crest

You signed-up to be a mentor. Thank you!

While visiting the list of mentors, I found your description being very short and different compared to others: it is actually your username. I encourage you to edit it, on your Mentor Dashboard.

@Trizek: was unaware there was a description. I'll update it when I get a chance. Thanks. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 18:43, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
