Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Fleetwood Park Racetrack/map

Hello. Since WP:Subpages are disabled in mainspace, perhaps this should become a template. Thanks, Wikishovel (talk) 04:04, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

@Wikishovel, thanks for your note. What does it mean that they're disabled? It seems to work fine for me, even in an incognito window. Am I missing something? RoySmith (talk) 15:14, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) If you navigate to Fleetwood Park Racetrack/map, you'll notice that unlike, say, User:RoySmith/sandbox, there's no backlink to go to Fleetwood Park Racetrack. That's because for this instance of MediaWiki, slashes in page titles are obviously allowed, but they're not considered real subpages. They're just pages with slashes in 'em. Best practice is probably to move this to Template:Fleetwood Park Racetrack map :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 15:18, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
It'd be pretty silly otherwise – input/output would have a backlink to input. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 15:19, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Funny, I'm sure I can remember subpages in mainspace, many years back. How they managed names like Face/Off back then is beyond me: must have been some awkward PHP trickery. Or maybe I'm dreaming the whole thing. Wikishovel (talk) 15:24, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Ah, I did wonder why it didn't have the backlinks :-). I'll move it, thanks. RoySmith (talk) 15:26, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
FWIW, Template:Fleetwood Park Racetrack/map doesn't have the backlinks either, but whatever :-) RoySmith (talk) 15:55, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
well sure, because Template:Fleetwood Park Racetrack doesn't exist :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 15:57, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Arbitration elections notice

The following is just a friendly unsolicited suggestion, so please feel free to ignore it. Regarding this edit: could you consider rewording it not to use the term "winning"? I do appreciate it's a natural term to use for those who are selected by election, so no worries if you'd rather keep your phrasing. Sure, technically those who pass the community's standard for being elected but don't finish in the top N places lost the election, but I think by running they've helped make the overall process a better one, and so personally I would like to focus on this. isaacl (talk) 23:38, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

I'd be interested to hear (no promises) what phrasing you think would be better. RoySmith (talk) 23:44, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
I suggest something like "has a good shot of becoming an arbitrator." isaacl (talk) 00:01, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

When the school administration, having demonstrated that it is actively monitoring vandalism from its network and removes all of it within minutes if not seconds, requests that it NOT be blocked for years on end so that students can familiarise themselves with the Wikipedia experience and learn to edit the site constructively please accede to the request. This is not happening at the moment Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive302#5.150.96.0/19. 213.123.216.179 (talk) 08:23, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

Anybody can edit that page; you can post it yourself. RoySmith (talk) 13:19, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
You may not see this, but the page is semiprotected. 213.123.216.179 (talk) 14:26, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
Hmmm, no I hadn't noticed. I've unprotected the page so you can go ahead and post to it now. @Valereee: that was your protection I stepped on; I hope that's OK with you. I've added the page to my watchlist and will re-protect if need be. RoySmith (talk) 14:33, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
It's totally fine, I just thought it seemed like it was wasting enough time that it was worth protecting, but I certainly see it as a bit of a close call. Valereee (talk) 15:19, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
Well, I see I got suckered. I guess that's what I deserve for a AGF :-( RoySmith (talk) 16:49, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
We've all done it. :D I have a tendency to be very kind and trusting to anyone who looks "new". I probably get suckered/trolled more often than I actually encourage a sincere new editor. Valereee (talk) 16:57, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

FAC review

Hi RoySmith, I have completed my responses to your review comments for FAC Adamson Tannehill. I know the article hasn't been the easiest to review. Is there more to come, or has the article been rejected? Thanks very much for your very helpful comments! Tfhentz (talk) 14:54, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

Review of revisions

Roy, I've addressed the revisions based on your second reading of Adamson Tannehill. My responses are on the FAC page. Thank you for the follow-ups. Let me know what you think. Tfhentz (talk) 19:15, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

Roy, I have added the ALT= text to the three remaining figure captions and slightly modified the one you wrote (thanks!). I left you a note on the FAC page. Let me know if all is good now. Thanks. Tfhentz (talk) 14:27, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

Checkuser request

Hi RoySmith. Could you please take a look at Funster78? I think it may be AndresHerutJaim based on EC permission gaming, the username pattern, and the interest in massacres related to the Arab-Israeli conflict. In addition to ensuring the account is never unblocked, I'm looking to do a CSD G5 of an article draft. Thanks. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 21:12, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

@Daniel Quinlan I ran some checks. It's  Possible, but it's a low-confidence match. I'll ping another CU who has had more experience with this case to see if they can add anything. RoySmith (talk) 23:34, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
RoySmith asked me to take a look. I took only a brief glance but I'd say  Unlikely. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 01:35, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi Roy, Thanks for bearing with my delayed work and responding so promptly to the spotcheck. You've done nice work on the article! Best, Eddie891 Talk Work 23:32, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Much appreciated. To be honest, I found your review (while certainly painful to endure) the most valuable of the bunch. The citation mistakes you found were actual mistakes which needed to be corrected, and once I've read something 100 times, I'm just not seeing any new problems, so having a second set of eyes is essential. RoySmith (talk) 23:37, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
That's often been my experience, as well. And in my experience, a number of scholars are actually *worse* about keeping all the sourcing together than Wikipedia editors who write FACs! Eddie891 Talk Work 15:25, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Please revert yourself

Perhaps you don't like what I said or you think I'm incorrect, or impolitic. Your feelings don't make my comment uncivil. I am well aware of how disliked I am by your ilk. And yet, I'm not wrong in what I said. I encourage you to find the requisite humility to revert yourself. Chris Troutman (talk) 16:31, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
