Articles for deletion/List of shopping malls in Kenya

Ron, now that this AFD has been decided, I want to educate myself about the process so I can better work within the guidelines in the future. I want to amke it clear this is not complaining about the decision or trying to appeal it here, but just me trying to better understand the process, as this is one of the first articles I have nominated for deletion. Your closing comment was, "No arguments for deletion aside from the nominator." My confusion is in the guidelines of WP:ROUGH CONSENSUS, "Consensus is not determined by counting heads, but by looking at strength of argument, and underlying policy (if any)." As I was referencing WP guidelines (at least to the best of my understanding), I want to make sure I understand your decision in light of your seeming to count opinions? It would help me to understand why the guidelines I referenced did not carrry more weight then the mostly non-referenced opinions of the others that commented. Thanks. You're right that consensus is not about counting heads but the head count is not meaningless. I agree with you that the keep opinions weren't the strongest I've seen but only you were arguing to delete this article and there were too many comments to justify a relist. (though I might have if it were a BLP) If I'd had punched this one "delete" it's likely I would be defending my supervote at DRV. Since this is a "low risk" article I would wait a few months and try again if it hasn't improved. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 02:11, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Question

There is a line that says admin, use only and mentions an AfD resulting in a keep result. It never went to AfD. Is this left on to show it's been prodded? Never seen that left on an article before (though I'm sure it's not uncommon). CycloneGU (talk) 06:23, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

The "admin use only" line is the oldafdful tag that goes on the article's talk page when an AFD is closed. It's misleading because non admins can close AFDs under certain circumstances. It should say "for closer's use only". In the case of Brett Ritchie, it wasn't "left on the article" when the PROD tag was removed. It's part of a separate AFD nomination and will be used when the AFD is closed. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 13:38, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Actually, my question was asked thinking for some reason the old prod. tag was still on the article. I misread; someone took it to AfD literally six minutes after the WP:REFUND. But yes, I agree the "admin. use only" bit is outdated and perhaps should be edited if such can be done without screwing up existing AfDs. Regarding this one, it's a bit of a shame that an editor has such a strong opinion against simply having an article about a player; I've seen articles kept for less. Mobile17

Martial arts pages

Hi, mr Ritzman, I saw you relisted one of the K-1 pages for further discussion. Just wanted to let you know that there wont be any discussion from the people involved or familiar with the subject in question, we've pretty much all stopped contributing here because what Libstar has done in a past month, listing about 50+ articles for deletion every day. Immensely disappointed about the information what will be lost, about four years of work form my fellow editors about the sport i love but i guess thats how wikipedia works, some people create, some delete. Alex Day article

Hello Ron. I'm not sure whether or not this is an unusual request, but last October you deleted a page about the YouTube personality Alex Day after an AFD discussion (here). I was wondering whether you would be able to restore the page and its history to my userspace - I vaguely recall that at some point a link was placed in the article (but then deleted) that might be able to assert Day's notability, and I'd quite like to access it again. OSSTMM Open Source Security Training Methodology Manual

Hi Ron The Page has been deleted , and OK thats fair. The presentation of the material was a slight oversight. I have started on the rewrite, and am quite sure it should meet the accepted parameters this time. Its my opinion that OSSTMM is unique and should be given proper mention. Please undelete the Antiobjects article

Hi Ron,

please undelete the Antiobjects article:

  • there are new academic references
  • the cited OOPSLA paper is a CS conf paper with over 30 refs. most of them CS

The approach has gained quite a bit of use with thousands of kids across the USA using the idea to make games through funding by the National Science Foundation, e.g., look for Collaborative Diffusion. If Google Scholar really would be used to judge the quality of articles then most of Wikipedia should be deleted. This is work funded by NSF. The fact that not everybody appreciated or understands the concept should not be held agains the article. Noreen Khan-Mayberry

Ron, I made a request to undelete Noreen Khan-Mayberry's page. You referred me to the person that deleted the page. This person "Wizardman" is semi-retired and no longer active on Wikipedia. Would you please re-instate the page. The AFD was done quickly and does not address the question regarding inequitable standards being levied on the Noreen Khan-Mayberry page that are not being applied to others lised in the NASA Personnel category. That "semi retired" tag on the top of his talk page is somewhat deceptive. Wizardman is still active and still closing AFDs. The best way to determine if an editor is active or not is to ignore any lame "retired" tag you see and look at their contributions. According to wizardman's contributions he is still quite active so try discussing it with him and then at deletion review if you are still not satisfied with his answer. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 00:11, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Would you reconsider your comment here? Penwhale (talk · contribs)'s closure was "It won't do much good; the person is using multiple sockpuppets; the account listed above is already blocked via CU." He originally enacted a ban but reversed himself a minute later. His ultimate closure was against the overwhelming community consensus to ban the serial vandal. My concern was not that "[a user was] being speedy railroaded in AN/ANI ban discussions". My concern was that consensus to enact the ban was being overridden. Cunard (talk) 00:01, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Just curious

to know why you relisted the Sreelakshmi Suresh AfD when all three participants other than the nom seemed to think that the subject passed GNG, and four full bio refs are within the article (and a prior keep AfD). The Lexington School

Ron, I'm new to a lot of this, and it is leading to some confusion on my end. I'm interested in restoring a page about The Lexington School. It was removed because of copyright concerns. I would like an opportunity to show that the information listed on this site is not infringing on copyright. The information I posted was relevant and accurate, and I was careful to include the school's mission statement and philosophy of education. I'm concerned that another website has also posted this same info, and that is leading to the question of copyright material. I want to comply completely with the guidelines in place here, but I'm confused about why the page was deleted. Is there a way I can see the version that was deleted? I'd like an opportunity to make any necessary changes to have the page restored. Could you review my AfD edits today?

Would you take a few minutes to double-check my work? You were recommended by an uninvolved admin as being a good person to review proper closing procedures. Would you mind looking at my recent contribs (especially the AfD process stuff I've done today) to make sure I've dotted my Is and crossed my Ts? I closed three debates as non-admin closes and just relisted one debate. I'm dipping my toe into this work (after editing for six years) to see if I understand this as well as I think I do. I might look at some later but if you are going to be closing and relisting then add this script to your vector.js or monobook.js file

BTW, if nobody's commented on my Moosally close by now, then I guess I provided enough in my closing rationale to satisfy interested parties. Given the points made in the discussion, I felt a keep outcome for a FA was a pretty safe call. I didn't feel it was up to me at all; I was just recognizing consensus as it lay. Everything else I've done in the last couple of days felt pretty routine, just a step out of the argument, not above it. Your deletion of 'antenarrative theory' by Dr. David Boje

Your deletion of Dr. David Boje's work in quantum physics and storytelling, and his concept of ANTENARRATIVE, is THE single most egregious and unfortunate edit I've ever seen on Wikipedia. Please allow it to be reposted, or re-post it yourself, if that's possible.

I have made my entire career (30+ years) in the storytelling business, from working as the publicist on the original TRON, when I had to explain to the news and entertainment media how a new technology (CGI) was going to change filmmaking forever (I also wrote the book the Art of TRON)...to when I produced the website for the first 'Toy Story' film and subsequently participated fully in the construction of early internet narratives...to today, when I use improvisation and (improvisational) game structure to help our clients generate productive business narratives in networks...

I am an expert in narrative, Ron. And I have never read anything more relevant to the future of narrative than Dr. Boje's work. We are, I believe, entering an era akin to the shift that took place at the end of the last century, when machines began giving way to information systems, and Newtonian physics to quantum mechanics. Today, like then, the old narratives are tired, and have sapped of their economic vitality (nowhere more so than in the U.S.). We need 'new story creation' on a unprecendented scale, and this effort will, of necessity, require what I call quantum narratives. These narratives will explore big themes like sustainability, education, religion, politics, leadership, etc. etc, We've spent 20 years building the technical infrastructure and now it's time to use the infrastructure to build the new narratives.

To do this productively (i.e. not chaotically) takes massive re-design in the conceptual, virtual and physical realms in which we dream and bring our dreams to life. Dr. Boje's theory of antenarrative and his other work in quantum physics and storytelling is going to be at the conceptual epicenter of this re-design.

By deleting his work, you are plopping yourself squarely in storytelling's past, when we spent all our time and professional energy battling to establish dominant narratives. The new narratives don't seek dominance, they seek flow. They are not 'owned' in the Disney IP sense of the word; they designed to invite participation. In terms of improvisation, the new games (which are used to generate narrative) are positive sum.

It will take Dr. Boje's work, translated to action in a multitude of different ways, to impose the discipline of design, the cosmos of creativity, on the chaos of information and invention that churns through the networked world in search of meaning (e.g. economic exchange) that can be assigned to it by people, environments and objects.

I urge you to reinstate his work. It's important! To me, it's like you're at editor at a science journal in 1904 who rejected Einstein's 1905 paper 'On the Electrodynamics of Moving Objects' that ushered in the new era of physics. That's how important, and potentially transformative, I believe Boje's work is. I don't care whether he self-publishes it or not. It doesn't matter. It is thoroughly documented and accredited academically.

My wife is on the faculty of the School of Cinematic Arts at USC, and I can tell you that Boje's references and the people he cites in his work pop up all the time in the most sophisticated and evolved academic conversations anywhere in the world, around the subjects of multimedia literacy, social media, cinema, games and participatory culture.

BTW, I don't know Dr. Boje, have never met him, don't even know anyone who knows him (although I know a woman who's married to a blacksmith in New Mexico who may know him, as Dr Boje's side business is blacksmithing). I came across his work a little over a month ago on a website published by the University of Bath in the U.K., where he presented his 'The Quantum Physics of Storytelling' paper earlier this year. Only time (or as Boje's paper would call it, 'timespacemattering') will tell, but there's every possibility it could be this century's 'On the Electrodynamics of Moving Objects.'

This article has been through 2 AFDs, which you can read by clicking "afd1" and "afd2" above, and in both there was a unanimous consensus to delete. I couldn't have closed the second AFD any other way and if it weren't be it would have been some other admin. Request for further info regarding deletion of ChristmasLightsEtc.com wiki page

My page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChristmasLightsEtc.com was deleted and I would like to either have the deletion reconsidered, or gain some valuable insight into what was done incorrectly so I can try again. I followed all of the posted guidelines, and added references from media coverage. Once the page was flagged for deletion, I went in and studied numerous similar pages, including http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balsam_Hill. I could continue to add media coverage from other sources, but after providing coverage from CNN, CBS, Fox News, Associated Press, Smart Money, and NY Times, I thought enough had been added. Should I have just continued to list news sources?

Actually, OrangeMike salted it. I edited through the salt and created a protected redirect to Michael_Phelps#Philanthropy. HJ Mitchell then deleted it thinking that an AFC submission needed to be moved to it. A new article was created and now it's a redirect again. I'm getting dizzy :(

The deletion of Mikhail Tank

In reviewing the criteria for Wikipedia, I see that entries must have verifiable references. I also assume that the purpose of Wikipedia is for individuals to look up information on topics and/or people that they have come across during the course of reading articles, listening to radio, or watching media. Given these two facts, I am confused as to why Mikhail Tank's page has been deleted. I understand that you are not the only person who had a say in this outcome; however, you seem to be someone who can best explain what transpired.

I am familiar with Mikhail's work and wonder whether the verifiable information that he provided was insufficient. For example, there is a review for the film he directed, "My Little Pony", here: http://liljas-library.com/showreview.php?id=222. This film was also screened at five film festivals around the world: Oldenburg Int'l. I also understand that there was some contention over his Guiness World Record for the longest titled song. Does this mean that all Guinness records are inconsequential for this site, or just the ones that wikipedia editors find so? If this is the case, then how is it decided which records are noteworthy and which are not? What if there is a person who wants to know about this record and wikipedia refuses to acknowledge it? Does this not make this site less useful?

There was also the dismissal of Mikhail's participation as the first online performer "at" the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (an event which is listed in wikipedia) as noted here: http://news.scotsman.com/scotland/A-virtual-first-for-the.5387736.jp. Why isn't this a relevant bit of information for wikipedia readers who might want to know how the festival may have changed over the years?

Again, I appreciate that you are but one voice of many who found his post not up to the standards of wikipedia. Yet, given the verifiable references and that his public persona can be established, I am unsure of how posts that may be considered obscure to many may remain on the site while Mikhail's does not when each maintain the same criteria.

Actually, the truth is that the administrator who closes an AFD discussion and hits (or doesn't hit) the delete button is suppose to be neutral and not have a strong opinion on the matter, otherwise he should be !voting in the discussion and not closing it. The discussion, which you can read by clicking "afd2" above, could not have been closed any other way and if it weren't me it would have been some other administrator. I saw your name as one of the people responsible for "removing" my article from Wikipedia. I guess I'm disappointed in this because it has truly helped me over the years, expecially with people finding out who I was and what I've been able to accomplish during my career.

I have written to a lawyer from Atlanta who helped work on my deletion also, a fellow UF grad who goes by the name "legaldog" or something like that, who didn't truly research me and my background. It said that I didn't graduate from the U of Florida (I received a BS in Adv from the College of Jm and Comm on March 21, 1970). He also tended to play down my "Hall of Fame" career as a coach with 3 state titles and a history of going to horrible programs and turning them into instant winner, because I was not "an athlete of impact" during my brief career as a walk-on punching bad, scout team player who tried so hard to play that the coaches took me in as an "intern"...how I learned the game from the inside.

I have built a career by winning where no one else wanted to go, winning state titles, taking 0-10 teams to the Final Four and helping kids make it in life. My last 14 years of HS coaching, we went to the Final Four 13 times, and went to 7 title games, winning 3. I started the football program at Pima College (Tucson) and we defeated the defending national championship team in our inaugural game. In my last game before I retired, we beat a hugely favored team, Kilgore College of Texas, in the Pilgrims Pride Bowl on national TV and finished #5 in the nation. It was only our 4th year of playing football.

My work with kids, under funded schools, doing clinics, speaking at hundreds of coaching clinics and doing 8 coaching DVDs for Youth and lesser programs has truly helped our sport. I currently coach Team Stars and Stripes in the Global Bowl, an exhibition game played in some foreign city (Japan, Munich, Paris...and this year Rome) that features ALL of the right kind of student-athlete, and to promote American sytle footbal around the world.

Hey, I can understand that I was dropped because there are a lot more noted coaches than me...that would be easy. But to be left out because poor research didn't find my BS degree (I now hold a M.ED from the U of Arizona ( May, 1971), or that all I did at Florida was get beat up to learn a game that I love, turning that career into something that has helped literally thousands of kids, just isn't fair to me...or others who really make the system work.

While I would not want your job or what comes with it, I do understand that some must be left out or dropped. However, being included in Wikipedia has helped parents to learn about me before they decided to send their son's with me overseas, has generated an easy source of information about me for the clinics I do, now throughout the world, and for students I speak to at motivational seminars who are interested in finding out about my career.

There's no doubt that there are plenty of amazing people in this world who don't have Wikipedia articles and whose articles get deleted. As for my job, in truth I'm actually the editor with the least say in the issue (except for close debates) as I just close the discussion and delete, or don't delete, the article. In the discussion about your article, which you can read by clicking "afd" above, some concerns were raised about the accuracy of some of the things in the article but if I had a strong opinion about it, I would have commented in the discussion not closed it. Back again...

The article on Jeffrey Sanzel was nominated for AFD on July 5, amd relisted on July 14. I commented on July 15, and when seeing it still open three weeks later, did some work[1] and reported my editing progress on August 11. The nom's concerns that it should be deleted per WP:NOEFFORT really have no basis in policy or guideline, and that he could nothing on the individual flags in the face of evidence that improvements were and are possible. best approach for a deleted article?

long-time wikipeida user, short-time wikipedia member, so all apologies in advance. I see you closed the Jeff Pearce (American artist) article a few days ago. From looking at the google cache of the wikipedia page, I believe I could write a far better one, with better outside references (i/e outside links to prominent reviewer's comments about his music- if you google jeff pearce, the first four listings are for the American musician). I was wondering if the best approach is start from scratch, or re-open the deleted article? Your opinion (informed by your obvious experience) would be most appreciated. Thank you for your time! If you think you can write a better article with sources then you are certainty welcome to do so as "delete without prejudice" means that it won't be subject to CSD G4. My close as delete was solely based on the article being an unsourced biography of a living person. Hi Ron, WikiProject Conservatism has just setup an article incubator. I think Star Parker is a good candidate for the incubator. Is this a separate "incubator" where the articles will be sub pages of Wikipedia:WikiProject Conservatism/Incubator or is it just a list of links to articles in the main incubator that interest your wikiproject? Fionavar Dieties info.

Hi I am a newbie at this so if I am not doing it right please forgive me. I was reading the Fionavar Tapestry wiki page [[2]] and clicked the Fionavar link under the "The Deities" section ( http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fionavar&redirect=no ). This link leads back to the same page with the redirect from Fionavar. The deleted text of the Fionavar page includes information on the Deities of Fionavar as well as other details about the world not in the Fionavar Tapestry link. Being new to this I did not want to just undelete stuff and mess up some process underway, but the info on deities at least should be placed in the Tapestry page and the link removed if this page is going to be removed completely. In most cases I think it's best to address the issue of previous WP:ATA arguments in your delete !vote instead of replying to every one. The closing administrator can decide how much weight they should get. a disambiguation request

Hi Ron- I hope I'm using the right word ("disambiguation"). I'd like to request a disambiguation page for "Jeff Pearce"- right now it leads to the Canadian musician Jeff Pearce, and as you know, I've been working on the Jeff Pearce (American artist) page. A google search for "jeff pearce" has the American artist's website as the top result, with six other (non-artist) websites on the first page alone, so I think an argument for a disambiguation page exists. Plus, after looking at more google results, there's apparently a UK author named Jeff Pearce who has recently released something of a top seller, as well as another author named Jeff Pearce who specializes in, let's say, "adult fiction". Deletion of Tim Pierce - Guitarist from wikipedia

Hi Ron - I am curious as to why you deleted Tim Pierce from wikipedia. He has played guitar on literally 100's of rock, pop, and country albums.. enough to have a listing I would think..

Here's an example, where Tim is listed in the additional musicians section of a Shinedown album. Your deletion of Tim now eliminates the cross-reference from the Shinedown entry..

Request to Reconsider Redirection of Sidney Miller Page

Hi Ron, I wanted to ask you to reconsider the redirection of the page I did on Sidney Miller, which now redirects to Malbec (Band). There was one vote for Redirection and one vote to Keep the page as is in the discussion, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Sidney_Miller. The vote to redirect cited two references as being "nonsense," but in the context of the article the first reference was referring to Sidney Miller III's father whom was the subject of the sentence, and the second reference in question was talking about Sidney's band, Malbec, which was also the subject of the sentence that the reference tag was placed in. The deletion discussion was relisted twice but no one else gave an opinion. I would like to have the redirect removed or at least have the discussion reopened.
