Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Sign your messages with four tildes (~~~~), be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

Happy editing! Cheers, Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 12:07, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

July 2022[edit]

Under construction icon

Thank you for your recent contributions, such as Assassination of Lasantha Wickrematunge.. Getting started creating new articles on Wikipedia can be tricky, and you might like to try creating a draft of your article in draftspace or in your userspace first, which you can then ask for feedback on if necessary, with less risk of deletion. Do make sure you also read help available to you, including Your First Article and the Tutorial. You might also like to try the Article Wizard, which has an option to create a draft version. Thank you. ––FormalDude talk 03:31, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Storchy. I noticed that you added or changed content in the articles Ali Sabry (Sri Lankan politician), Assassination of Lasantha Wickrematunge, and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Storchy (talk) 12:55, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Romesh67! Your additions to Lasantha Wickrematunge have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 19:32, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

July 2022[edit]

Information icon Please do not remove maintenance templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Mahinda Rajapaksa, without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your removal of this template does not appear constructive, and has been reverted. Thank you. Chanaka L (talk) 08:02, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you wish for me to delete the page I took hours working on today I will delete it. This is my first time working on Wikipedia and i am uncomfortable and don’t feel safe editing or contributing to Wikipedia anymore. The edits I made took hours of research and work but you are attacking all my contributions and making me feel uncomfortable contributing to Wikipedia. Disambiguation link notification for July 2[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Gotabaya Rajapaksa, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page FT. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 19:49, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ahimsa Wickrematunge moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, Ahimsa Wickrematunge, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 03:53, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

August 2022[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give the page Draft:Ahimsa Wickrematunge a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Ahimsa Wickrematunge. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Storchy (talk) 09:27, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Are you able to move it Romesh67 (talk) 09:33, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's a history merge request at the top of the page, asking an administrator to fix the problem. Storchy (talk) 09:35, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you wish to delete the page I created I will do so. I do not feel safe or comfortable editing or contributing to Sri Lankan related Wikipedia articles anymore as users here are making me uncomfortable and removing all my work which I took hours to edit and contribute. Romesh67 (talk) 12:14, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Ahimsa Wickrematunge requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ahimsa Wickrematunge. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here.
