several definitions of the west. Use of colours.[edit]

I was wondering if you would reconsider your choice of colours for your map and key for "several definitions of the west.

The light blue color used for "Developed countries in east asia and Oceania, sometimes considered western" is not clear at all. Would it be possible to change to a bolder colour. Especialy as most of these countries are islands and are very difficult to see against the white background.

Wagga Wagga[edit]

Hello my friend. Just wondering do you have any old maps of Wagga Wagga (or Wynyard or Clarendon) available - or can point me towards? A bunch of us are trying to get Wagga Wagga, New South Wales up to GA or beyond and a nice early map of the streetscape or similar might provide some excellent enhancement? --VS talk 13:31, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks Astrokey - this one might still be useful but if you find any other/s that would be brill.--VS talk 22:35, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another Aust. Transport infobox[edit]

While I commend your efforts to improve navigation amongst Australian Rail articles, the number of Australian public transport navigation infoboxes is simply getting beyond the point of being funny. I know this because I spent the better part of a whole day doing a massive cleanup of Melbourne which resulted in a single nav infobox. I would like to see a similar level of effort put in for the national perspective, so can I please gain your thoughts about this proposal I have put together this morning for a national approach to transport related infoboxes. Thanks, Thewinchester (talk) 02:43, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Common Law Graphic[edit]

I was over at the common law article and saw the grapic you made for it. It looks nice, but when I saw the US on it, it looks incomplete. Many states in the US, no longer use common law. Illinois, for example, replaced common law in 1961 with a criminal law statute. Torturous Devastating Cudgel 22:02, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

With regard to Illinois, (the only state I have any first hand information on) the passage of the Illinois Criminal Code of 1961 marked the transition from common law to statutory law. For example, 720 ILCS 5, Section 1-3 dealing with the Applicability of common law states that “No conduct constitutes an offense unless it is described as an offense in this Code or in another statute of this State.“ But on the other hand, common law, at least in Illinois, can still be applicable in civil cases. This article here in JSTOR might also shed some light on this topic [1], but I don’t have access to the whole thing. At any rate, perhaps there is some legal expert on Wiki that could help clarify this. Torturous Devastating Cudgel 15:39, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I left a note here for some input. Torturous Devastating Cudgel 16:06, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Torturous Devastating Cudgel, I saw the request for Guidance that you posted. Unless I am drastically mistaken in what you are asking, the only U.S. state that employs a "mixed-system" for purposes of the image you are referring to is Louisiana, and that appears to be already indicated in the image itself. Note that the adoption of penal codes and codification of the rules of criminal procedure do not necessarily mean the same thing as the adoption of a "mixed-system" for purposes of the image you link to. Judges in Illinois still meet the test specified in the article Common law. Hope that helps. dr.ef.tymac 16:17, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your help is needed![edit]

Hello Astrokey44. Currently I am working on a project, translating the National Hockey League and it's related articles into Persian and Hebrew Wikipedias. Since the leeters in English language are written from left to right and in Persian are written from right to left, it creates a problem when dealing with the map you've made about team locations in that article. Here I provide you the link in Persian Wikipedia so you could see the problem about the map. Since I have no idea of how to fix this map, I was wondering if you could help me in this. I really appreaciate your help. here is the link to Persian article on NHL and the futured map

Municipalities in Delaware County, Pennsylvania[edit]

Thanks very much for your work thus far. Please see my notes and comments at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Maps. Your work is very much admired and appreciated. Spikebrennan 13:35, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, marvelous work. Were you going to finish the locator maps for the rest of the municipalities? Spikebrennan 18:59, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll add my thanks as well. Good work with the maps. I noticed that for Concord Township you added to the map to the Geobox, which I think is a good idea. I had done this for Bucks County as well. However, I think your new maps should be the first map shown so that the flow of smaller to larger area (county, state, country) remains consistent. What are your thoughts on that? VerruckteDan 21:32, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Astro, in response to your post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. counties, check out Aspinwall, Pennsylvania. User:Skeetidot is working on creating maps for Alleghany County that use the name colors as the PA Locator map and USA locator map used in the boxes of the Delco municipalities. Also, from what I've seen there's a collection of PA counties that have county locator maps. I've seen them for Allentown area articles, Bucks and Lycoming Counties. I think they are a great feature for articles, and I really like that the Alleghany County maps match the color scheme. VerruckteDan 19:50, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Western Australia project[edit]

might have a conversation you might or not might be interested in. SatuSuro 06:30, 13 July 2007 (UTC) thanks for that - is there any easy process for non creators to addcthings to that stuff? we have a new geography of wa article -and the intro paragraph needs about3 maps just to set the context right - I am very very tempted to ask you for help :) SatuSuro 07:03, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(1) WA occupies nearly 1/3 of the Australian continent. - a simple wa against the other states (maybe very small text with land size in sq kms as well...)

(2) Due to the size and the isolation of the state - considerable emphasis has been made of these features. Such as - it is the second largest administrative territory in the world (after Yakutia in Russia), or no other place in the world occupies such a high percentage of a continental land mass. maybe maybe not

(3) Its capital city, Perth, is also amongst the most isolated on the planet, being closer to Jakarta than to the national capital Canberra. jakarta to sydney regional

Or is there a place and way to try this stuff oneself (i work from an intel imac with no photoshop or other special software mind you) -- SatuSuro 07:08, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright issues NLA[edit]

In answer to your comments about who owns the copyright to the photograph which I uploaded to the Royal Canberra Hospital Implosion.........James Nomarhas worked as photographer for the NLA and took these images as part of an assignment. The library owns the works and copyright and Nomarhas is happy for the images to be used anyway.I am working as a volunteer within the Pictures Collection and have access to staff and records connected to copyright issues.NLA PIC 23:48, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Having access to staff and records, does not assign copyright permission.

Permission to use under copyright, assigns permission to use.

Volunteer or even salaried status at the NLA, does not conjure up authority to give permission to use images.

Sometimes volunteers imagine they have more authority than they are ever likely to be granted.

Can you put your legal name here and I will check with my NLA contacts if you do have authority to assign copyright on their behalf. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joyen (talkcontribs)

new maps[edit]

Hi! I'm wanting to create some county maps for an article I'm working on. All of the (U.S.) state and county maps I've run across have a consistent format and I assume were generated by the same process. I seem to recall long ago finding a link to an external site(s) for map generation but the results weren't what I was looking for, and weren't consistent with other wikipedia maps already in place. And I can't find those links now anyway. Any advice would be much appreciated. And thanks for your earlier advice regarding animated GIFs. PurpleChez 03:21, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message. As for US County maps, all I'm really looking for is an outline map, preferably with rivers, and maybe with the county seat and/or largest city. I'm putting together a page on the waterfalls of northern Georgia; I have the waterfalls grouped by county, and for each group thought I could number the entries and then place corresponding numbers on the county maps. I've found map generation websites, and I could probably make maps with Adobe Illustrator, but I would prefer that they be stylistically similar to other maps at Wikipedia. Thanks for any advice. Inkscape answer[edit]

Hi Astrokey,

The British election map is compiled from a PDF file from the Office of National Statistics and from the site TheyWorkForYou, which briefly listed the latitudes and longitudes of the borders. The reason there are no gaps is that the points were placed by computer, rather than hand. Inkscape was only really used for tweaking it and simplifying the paths.

If you are trying to vectorize maps, first of all I suggest that you trace them by hand, rather than trying any potrace or anything like that. Deliberately overlap each electoral district onto others, and then use Inkscape's logical path functions - chiefly "Difference" - to ensure that there aren't any gaps. Only add borders when you've finished, as it can make things terribly confusing otherwise.

Oh, and if the map involves a coastline of any sort, it is well worth checking out the GSHHS, which will save you some time at least.

Hope at least some of this information will be of use to you.

Hi Astrokey44.
