London Wall

Is the Tower of London really considered one of the "gates" of the wall? Please could you provide a verifiable source that proves this? --TBM10 (talk) 07:16, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

However, it appears that it may not be counted as one of the traditional eight gates (although there are definitely eight, not seven). This website gives "Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Moorgate, Cripplegate, Aldersgate, Newgate, Ludgate and Billingsgate," and this one has the eighth gate as Temple Bar. I'll keep looking for a definitive list, and I'll accept that Posterngate is probay not one of the traditional ones, but I've always understood there to be 8. From the Museum of London's archives page: "The six main medieval gates were Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Cripplegate, Aldersgate, Newgate and Ludgate ... There were also smaller postern gates, for pedestrians, like the one by Tower Hill. However, these are not usually included in any count of the number of gates. One of these posterns was at Moorgate which was pulled down in 1415 and a new larger gate built, so that in most counts after that, Moorgate became the seventh gate." I always thought seven was the correct count but it seems like one of those things that will never be exactly known for certain! --TBM10 (talk) 18:26, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Incidentally, and funnily enough as it made me think of this discussion, I was standing in a pub in the City yesterday which had an old poster framed on the wall featuring drawings of the seven gates of the London Wall: Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Cripplegate, Aldersgate, Moorgate, Newgate and Ludgate. --TBM10 (talk) 00:28, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
