I just made the assumption that the image was created during the lifetime of Shah Jahan (January 5, 1592 – January 22, 1666), which would qualify it for the tag. Could be wrong. The image looks to be an orphan currently so you may as well delete it. -Regards Nv8200p talk 23:32, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

West Ice Shelf 'feature'[edit]

While I suppose it would be difficult to go back and find your original sources, at least you'd have a better idea what "the rest of the story" is. I'm quite defeated trying to think what the phrase might have been meant to say. :-)

  • It was copied from USGS GNIS — I have added a reference. Looks like someone didn't proofread the text when it was added to GNIS. I found a second source and re-phrased that fragment. RedWolf 23:58, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:X3DFritz Kasparov G2 final.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:X3DFritz Kasparov G2 final.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Yup, the image can now be deleted. A freely available alternate is now being used in its place. RedWolf 17:50, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Beartooth Mountains[edit]

I may have messed up the image spacing on the article...my browser setting is low, so I oftentimes get a lot of spacing issues in articles with images. Feel free, of course, to readjust if you are getting too much crowding.--MONGO 08:02, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A task for your bot.[edit]

I recently closed the CfD for Category:Cause of death missing with a consensus to delete the category. However, there are about 1100 or so articles in that cat, way too many to tackle by hand. Could CanisRufus handle that task so i can delete the cat? If not, can you recommend a better-suited bot? Cheers. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 12:24, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • No problem. I'll run CanisRufus to take care of that. RedWolf 15:32, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • While you have prevented me from racking up some massif edit stats, your bot will undoubtedly save me from painful repetitive stress issues. If I can ever do anything for you (help on a task, review an article or two, etc) do not hesitate to ask. Cheers. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 17:53, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From User_talk:Waqas.usman#Image:Diran_P8050944.jpg Hi. Thanks for uploading Image:Diran P8050944.jpg. Since you released it under a PD license I have copied it to Commons → commons:Image:Diran P8050944.jpg. If you could provide a source date for the image there, that would be appreciated. Thanks. Sorry, I didn't login in months, I don't remember if I put the date or someone else took it from the exif, but it's there now :) User:Waqas.usman (Talk) 11:25, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked the image history, I did put the date myself back in Sep 06 but didn't reply at your/mine talk page. User:Waqas.usman (Talk) 11:28, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Okay, no problem. Thanks for adding the date. RedWolf 06:30, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:SSEichmann.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:SSEichmann.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:13, 6 April 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Yonatan talk 02:13, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anger at Category:Fullmetal Alchemist cast members[edit]

I'm really really angry that your bot would delete a cast member category and then not even bother to listify it. I personally am also angry your deleting these categories because it makes it difficult to keep track. Really not happy with this.--Jack Cox 05:17, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The list was incorporated into the existing list article List of voice casts of Fullmetal Alchemist. RedWolf 08:21, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the reasons why these types of categories are being deleted can be found at CFD Actors by series. RedWolf 08:30, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Links to ericandlucie.com[edit]

I noticed that we're both trying to remove links to ericandlucie.com from numerous pages. This has been going on for a couple of days. I finally decided to send an email to feedback@ericandlucie.com (the contact listed on that site), but the email has bounced (twice, the second time I sent it to multiple possible email addresses at that site). This is what I sent:

Hi Eric and Lucie,
Someone using an anonymous IP address has been adding links to your trip reports to numerous mountain articles on Wikipedia. These links, although perhaps interesting to some, add little to the articles in question and violate Wikipedia's policy on external links, which frowns on including links to personal webpages. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links
I do realize that these links may have been added by a third party unbeknownst to you. But I just wanted to ask if you or anyone you know has been responsible for these edits. If so, please desist or ask those adding the links to desist.
Personally, I think your trip reports are interesting. They just don't fit the policy for inclusion in Wikipedia articles, and all of the links are being removed as they are found.
Thanks,

Would it be appropriate for you to block the IP 63.18.127.133 now that they have persisted in adding the links after your warning on their talk page? The links have been posted from at least 3 different IPs thus far, though. Thanks. --Seattle Skier (See talk tierS) 22:41, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I just found out that the IP 63.18.127.133 has requested an account at WP:ACC, ericandlucie (talk · contribs), which has now been created. The IP entered an email address, public@ericandlucie.com, and so I have re-sent my email above to that address. --Seattle Skier (See talk tierS) 23:00, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I had started looking into a block but then got distracted by something else and didn't get a chance to get back until after I saw your followup. Hopefully the issue can be resolved through the new account rather than having to block. I will keep an eye on what this new account does. RedWolf 06:46, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My last email to public@ericandlucie.com did not bounce, so I'm assuming that whoever has been posting the links has received the email. I don't expect any further problems, it seems like a friendly website and they don't look like spammers. Probably they were just innocently (but very persistently) adding the links. --Seattle Skier (See talk tierS) 08:47, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Human Touch.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Human Touch.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi RedWolf,

Well, to answer your question regarding where to find the population rank for a particular municipality in a whole country, you can find the ranks via this website: [1]. The population rank is shown on the last column of the chart.

Thank you for reminding me for my spelling mistake.

Namche Bazaar[edit]

Would you consider re-licensing your [photo] of Namche Bazaar under CC-by-SA 1.0 for use in our article on Wikitravel? We've been talking about making it one of our monthly featured Off the Beaten Path articles, but we need a photo. You can reach me there, or I'll check back here. Thanks. Gorilla Jones 17:52, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is not my photo, so I cannot directly add a new license for it. The image was originally from stock.xchng. I contacted the photo owner (els) in Nov. 2003 and he granted permission for me to license it under GFDL. Unfortunately, it seems the photo has been removed from stock.xchng and I was unable to find the email address for els there anymore. I will have to dig through my various email archives to see if I can find the email address I used in 2003. However, given the time involved, the chances of still contacting els at that email address are not great.
Now, I have been to Namche Bazaar myself and do have a number of photos of the town. I will go through my collection and see if I can find a suitable photo and upload it. Does it have to be CC-by-SA 1.0 or can it be CC-by-SA 2.5? RedWolf 09:20, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 01:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Convert[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you switched the heights in feet for Mount Cameroon to use the Convert function and thus be derived from the metric dimensions. This approach is convenient - and I have inserted it myself into infoboxes and elsewhere. It works where the height in feet was not originally calculated independently of the metric height. However, where the original calculation of height was from a source in feet (or from a metric measurement exact to a greater number of significant digits - rarely the case for mountain heights), using Convert is not appropriate. This is because feet are smaller than metres and thus a range of feet values gives the same metre value, although the converse is not true. For example, 5,000 m using Convert gives 16,404 ft. However, measurements of from 16,403 to 16,405 ft all convert to 5,000 m. Thus, if an original measurement is in feet it should not be replaced by a synthetic value using Convert. In my example, suppose a mountain's height was given correctly as 5,000 m (16,403 ft) and that the foot measurement was correct. Replacing the text with Convert would give 5,000 m (16,404 ft) which would be incorrect. Obviously, this example works for all pairs of units where the smaller unit is an originally-measured value. It is thus important where the original measurement is in the smaller unit (feet in the above example), for the writer to note that this is the case so that a rounding error is not introduced. As to how this is best done, I am open to suggestions. Until further notice, I shall use footnotes. By the way, I have not determined that this problem exists in the case of the Mount Cameroon changes, however, I do intend to look into it. Best regards - Sammalin

Geobox 2[edit]

Hello, this message is sent to you because you've shown some interest in the Geobox templates in past. There is now a new version (aka Geobox 2) which supersedes all older Geoboxes (aka Geobox 1). The major difference is there are no feature specific templates (Settlement, River, Mountain range etc.) but just one master template which can handle all type of data. There are a couple of new features and many new fields making the template much more versatile so now it can be used for virtually any geography related feature without the need to create a specific template.

The switch to Geoboxes 2.0 is highly recommended as the new template has a much more effective code, which renders faster than the old one (with much smaller pre-expand size, it can be one third to one fourth of the pre-expand size of Geoboxes 1). To convert aa page from Geobox 1 to Geobox 2, there are two ways:

  • By changing the template header:
    {{Geobox Settlement
    becomes
    {{Geobox|Settlement
Although some field names have been changed in order to be unified, the old names are accepted too. For any settlement Geobox use {{Geobox|Settlement and set the settlement type (city, borough, town, village) in category field. Calling e.g. {{Geobox|City will work as well but it's not the recommended way (from technical reasons).
  • By a semi-automated tool which reorders the field names in the Geobox 2 style and also renames the few changed field names.

There are several unresolved issues at the Geobox talk page, please add your comments and of course any other ideas you might come with as well as bug reports.– Caroig (talk) 09:28, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Super Mario RPG lists[edit]

Currently, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has two lists pertaining to it (List of characters in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). User:TTN decided it would be best to merge the lists into the main article and split Smithy Gang into those articles. I recently merged Smithy Gang into the list of chatacters by removing the non-notable characters, and I have asserted that a cameo section in the list of characters is valid, per Wikipedia:Trivia sections and Wikipedia:Handling trivia that uses Alex Trebek#Cameos as a good example. I have suggested that we rename the articles per Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves to something along the lines of Characters of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and World of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Mushroom Kingdom (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) just like Characters of Final Fantasy VIII and World of Final Fantasy VI or Gaia (Final Fantasy VII). I believe if these articles are to evolve beyond a non-notable list, they should be renamed. For example, List of Final Fantasy VII locations was merged into Gaia (Final Fantasy VII), because a World article is notable, but a simple list of locations is not. That is why there are other secions of the article to make it a World article. It simply has not been renamed yet.

TTN believes the citations in the development and reception sections of the list of locations, books and magazines, are trivial sources. When I added that the 3D perspective of the game is reminicent of Equinox to the main article, TTN removed it since my souce was "the opinions of the Nintendo Power player's guide writers". Although it was actually Nintendo Power magazine, I do believe a magazine is a reliable source, and I gave a page from Next Generation Magazine which also said the same thing. In addition, I was surprized that TTN said that it was from the players guide, since he claims to own the players guide for the game. He has not verified this, since I asked him for citations in May, "Could you look in the back of the Player's Guide and tell me what “types” of … Magic? I forgot what they call it in the game … well, anyways, what types of Special Attack or whatever it is (actually, could you find out what it's called?) there are? I remember some vaguely when I owned the guide like “Fire”, “Jump”, “Electricity?”, etc. Could you provide a citation, like the page number with a quote in context?" TTN replied that he was going to "get to it" (User talk:TTN/Archive 5#List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). TTN claims the player's guide is "at the bottom of a box that's behind at least five others in a cramped space". Seeing that TTN did not recognize that the page was not from the player's guide when I provided a scan of the page in question from Nintendo Power shocked me. However, I have continued to assume good faith by not questioning TTN's honesty.

Per Wikipedia:Consensus#Consensus can change, I have offered five different reasonable, temporary compromises that might integrate my idea with TTN's.

  1. Go over the list of characters so we can delete non–notable characters
  2. Rename the articles by following the steps at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves.
  3. Cut down the geography section list of locations by cutting it into the regional maps the adventures use when traveling from one to another. I can get pictures and write the fair use rationals, and someone can cut down the text that has no citation and does not allude to other media.
  4. Write the concept and creation and reception sections for the list of characters
  5. Write the concept and creation section for the main article

TTN rejected my compromise because it still keeps the articles. I agreed I would consider a redirect, but Wikipedia:Article size does not allow that, since the list of locations is currently 82 KB long. Instead, I agreed to help cut down the geography section that is the bulk of the article, but TTN rejected that as well because TTN states, "I am not interested in working on the article in regards to improving it." and "get past this "having sources automatically means that this information is good" mentality." TTN states, "I don't think they have or will ever assert notability." I have replied with, "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, so if you don't think the articles will ever assert notability, we cannot yet know this, per Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions#I don't like it.

Would you please take a look at Talk:Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and give us your thoughts? Taric25 01:44, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chomolhari assessment[edit]

There's no argument that the text on this peak represents a start, when comparing to other mountains of similar importance. Obviously a picture is needed for example. However, when assessing quality should one not take into account how much and how easily information can be gathered on a peak in the first place? It took me quite a bit of digging to even find which 5 groups had climbed the mountain, let alone how they did it, while books have been written about mountains that have a similar start rating. Start is described as that "many readers will need to find additional sources of information". Good luck to them. Btw, I've just removed the "stub" designation, as people may stub their toes trying to expand it further.

Despite the lack of information on it, I do disagree with the Low-importance rating. The mountain is very prominent in many ways: the topographic kind (over 2 km, only 9 peaks in the Alps beat it), the visual kind (it's the one mountain people keep staring at while traveling between Sikkim and Tibet and treks in Bhutan are organized just to go from one to the other viewpoint of Chomolhari), the alpinistic kind (the faces that one is allowed to climb are exceedingly challenging), and the cultural kind (as mentioned it is sacred to the Tibetans) (It's sacred to the Bhutanis too, but then all their mountains are sacred). It ranks above peaks like Baruntse (rated High importance) and Chogolisa (Top priority) in all these aspects.

Otherwise I have no particular "relation" with Chomolhari, never been there and just found it necessary to expand on your stub on such an important peak. Looking forward to the WikiProject's assessment of the one other mountain I wrote the text for and of my baby that once (and unnoticed by me) was nominated for featured article. Afasmit 19:57, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are lots of mountains (do I dare say thousands?) of mountains where it is difficult to find extensive information on them. I am going by the standards set for B class and above articles when I rate the articles more or less. Also keep in mind that I am just one reviewer; others may give higher/lower ratings. Also, the rating of mountain articles is still in its infancy and we are still trying to determine what is needed for each rating level. I initially rated it low importance as references were missing on several statements (I am partly guilty for that as I was the one who added some of the info) so if the importance to Tibetans was cited by several sources, that would give more weight to rating it higher. I have re-examined the article and raised it to Mid. The importance of the two mountains you mentioned may be one notch too high on each now that I look at them again. Thanks for your feedback; I'm still working on my article assessment skills so feedback on my review is good. RedWolf 05:10, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Metres in infoboxes[edit]

Good work you're doing on Mountain articles. I noticed you changed the way metrr and feet are wikilinked in infoboxes ([2] for example). When I wrote it like this, I figured that meters and feet should be linked and unabbreviated at least once, but more than once is not necessary. --Berland 16:59, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I feel that metres and feet do not need to be wikilinked at all in mountain articles as it just adds unnecessary link clutter and the article content is not really relevant to these units of measure to deserve a link. That being said, I am not objecting to the link only first occurrence rule just that I am trying to be consistent in other mountain articles. RedWolf 17:18, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have been consistent to my rule in my own infobox edits. There should possibly be a guideline on this in the project. --Berland 18:24, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Macintosh System Template[edit]

I recently put up an article about the Hard Disk 20 and wanted to use the {{mac specs}} System Template it appears you created. If so, the problem I am having with it is that it will not let me format the template without CPU & RAM info. Even if I put "N/A" it leaves formatting artifacts. I apologize for my ignorance about Wiki syntax, but is there a way to clean up the template for my use? Otherwise, would you be so kind as to help me create one for non-system specs? Thanks and best regards ...--Woodwynlane (talk) 17:20, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • CPU, CPUSpeed, RAM and RAMType are now optional parameters. RedWolf (talk) 18:31, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hanging Hills etc.[edit]

Thanks for the Wikiproject reviews of reveiws of the Hanging Hills and the Holyoke Range. I have to question the low importance rating on them, though. Both of these ranges are well known New England landscape features with significant recreational, cultural, and geologic notability. Did you read the articles? I'm wondering if you have a west-coast mountaineering bias on what constitutes a significant mountain (i.e., an elevation bias). And what about the start-level quality rating on Chauncey Peak? Any advice for improving it? What is it missing?--Pgagnon999 (talk) 17:56, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • The importance rating is as it pertains to mountains on a global basis taking into account elevation and ranking within its range or mountain grouping (if any). Mid importance is typically for highest mountains within a range/group. Many/most mountains would be well known locally so that is usually not a primary factor in determining importance as it pertains to the Mountains wiki project. Regional wiki projects would no doubt give these articles a higher importance. As for Chauncey Peak, the geology section needs a bit more. I realize that it says to see the related article for more information but there should at least be a summary of that article as it pertains to this particular feature of the area. Great work on these articles. RedWolf (talk) 18:51, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I don't think you've read these articles very well. Nor have you read the explanation of ratings on the mountain project page. Here's a quote: Note that general notability need not be from the perspective of editor demographics; generally notable topics should be rated similarly regardless of the country or region in which they hold said notability. Thus, topics which may seem obscure to several audiences —but which are of high notability in other places—should still be highly rated. Might be worthwhile to review it; at the very least it opens up a whole field of discussion. That said, how about a moratorium on rating east coast mountains? Or elicit the viewpoint of editors who are familiar with the region?--Pgagnon999 (talk) 19:13, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Pgagnon999. Not everyone knowns the same mountains. Most of the mountain articles I have seen are rated low importance. I have rerated some mountain articles I know that were not low importance. Some were even more than mid importance. For example, the Arctic Cordillera in the Canadian Arctic would rather be high importance because it is the only major mountain range in eastern North America, it contains the highest mountains in eastern North America and because the other major mountain systems (Rocky Mountains and Appalachian Mountains) are high importance as well. I understand the Arctic Cordillera is probably not very well-known, but it's still a major mountain range and deserves a major rating. Black Tusk 20:12, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've just tacked a post to the wikiproject mountain discussion board that will (hopefully) open this issue up for general discussion. There is certainly a lot of bias, and most of it seems centered around the idea of mountains as a recreational resource, specifically a mountaineering resource. But mountains mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. See you at the project discussion board. --Pgagnon999 (talk) 22:50, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • You are certainly welcome to change the importance if you feel there's merit to doing so. Be bold. Just post your reasons on the assessment comments page. I'm not trying to be the sole judge of the ratings and am only going on my interpretation. Black Tusk, if you feel the importance is wrong, change it and make a note of it on the comments page. The importance ratings are not carved in stone once they are set. RedWolf (talk) 23:02, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Red Wolf, I just came across low ratings you posted for two major mountain ranges (entire ranges!) in India (in the most densely populated area on earth!) with highly significant cultural, religious, and economic importance. I therefore have to assume that you are rating the mountains based on recreational value only. As you are an administrator, I can't help but hold you up to a higher standard than the usual Wikipedian. This kind of bias doesn't help the project. I don't think being "be bold" is a suitable response in this case. Would you consider holding off on doing any further ratings and instead contribute to a discussion on the subject? Again, I've made a post on the project talk page. --Pgagnon999 (talk) 14:41, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How does Whistler Peak in the rockies rate higher than the entire range of the Eastern Ghats in India? --Pgagnon999 (talk) 14:55, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
