Table scopes

Again, I really appreciate the edits you made with the tables on Shinhwa discography. One change you made was adding ! scope="row" to several rows, and I was hoping you could explain what that means? What is the purpose of the scope statements? (if you know) How do I know on which lines something like that needs to be used? Is column scope a thing? No one's assessed the article at all so far, so I'm a little panicky, ha ha. Also, I feel like I owe you for all that work. What kind of refs are you guys looking for on the GG music videos? Shinyang-i (talk) 23:14, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

It is further explained on WP:DTT. It's new to me, so I can't really explain it better than that. I see now that I missed some (scope="col" should be after the ! on "Title", "Album details", etc.) I will add these later, but feel free to do it yourself. I have a few proposed changes, so I'll probably comment on the FLC page later today. I don't want to support until I'm sure I understand the criteria. There is a backlog but hopefully others will comment too. Random86 (talk) 01:19, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
The criteria are really vague, which is a lot of what has bothered me so much about the process. I didn't get a lot of feedback on anything but the lead during peer review, so I was left wondering if the rest was good, was crap, was confusing, or what. It's unnerving to me, ha ha, because I can't tell if there are expectations beyond the obvious. I did some reading there, and it seems there is a lot of bias against song and discog lists because of various issues, so I'm afraid people will avoid it. Oh well, I should stop worrying. I look forward to your suggestions. :) Shinyang-i (talk) 01:54, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

Overdose (EP)

Hello there, as you may know, I'm a certified n00b on wiki. I created the page "Overdose (Exo album)" knowing that "Overdose (EP)" already existed. I just didn't know how to turn into an article. Anyways, I read through someone else's contributions that Overdose once had an article last year. Why did it turn into a redirect link? Idealtype 15:02, 15 June 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Idealtype (talkcontribs)

Hello Idealtype. Overdose (EP) was created by an editor who didn't understand copyrights. Once all the copyvios and single-vendor charts were removed there wasn't much left so I redirected the article. You can undo the redirect by editing this version, but it will need to expanded with more prose based on reliable sources. Helpful pages include WP:NALBUM, WP:KO/RS, and WP:EDRED. Happy editing! What to do for Bigbang tour page

Hi Random86, I'm posting because I'm unsure about what to do with a page and thought I should ask a more experienced editor. The article MADE 2015 World Tour has been deleted once in afd Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/MADE 2015 World Tour and once again by an admin through speedy deletion when it was recreated 11 days later. It's back up and though I think it has changed a bit, the changes are not in anyway beneficial to fixing the page's notability issues. I am at this point unsure if I should submit for a second afd since the changes, I think, negate speedy deletion or if I should try to talk it out with the editors since at least one is an editor who put it up the second time, ...or maybe just let it go for a bit as they are still updating stuff (but again I don't think they will have enough). I hope you can just give me some direction or thoughts on what to do since I am not as knowledgeable about Wikipedia guidelines and etiquette. Thank you!Peachywink (talk) 15:11, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Peachywink: As you can see, the page has been speedily deleted again. I didn't see any major differences, and the prose was the same. Random86 (talk) 01:37, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
Yeah I saw that you put in for the speedy delete and am sorry to have to bug people with the question. I just am not very aware yet of how much a page should change before a speedy delete isn't an option despite reading the guidelines but I think I am slowly getting a better idea now.Peachywink (talk) 18:47, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello Random86, can you edit page Koh Na-young for me, please ? Jessiejung (talk) 09:02, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Random86,Wiki said:This biographical article needs additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous or harmful. CAN YOU EDIT IT FOR ME,PLEASE Jessiejung (talk) 02:56, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Jessiejung: If Koh Na-young is a topic you are interested in, you should improve it yourself. If you need help with something specific I will try to help you. However, Koh Na-young is most likely not notable so there may not be anything you can do. By the way, if you want to send me more messages don't use barnstars and WikiLove templates inappropriately. You can send a message without using those. (Click "new section" for a new topic, otherwise edit the existing topic.) Random86 (talk) 04:38, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
Jessiejung, did you read the above message? Please don't respond using WikiLove because that is not how you send normal messages. There is nothing I can do to improve Koh Na-young because she is not notable. Random86 (talk) 06:56, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Reference changes

Hello. I had some questions about the changes you made to the reference formatting on Shinhwa discography. How did you figure out whether something goes in the "work", "website", or "publisher" field? One editor is nitpicking a lot of stuff and when I looked at the references I realized they're quite different from when I last viewed them, but I can't really see the logic behind many of the changes. Not saying you did it wrong, just wanted to know what rules you were following (since we'd both been murky on the issue previously). Like I don't necessarily see why "website=KBS World Radio, publisher=Korean Broadcasting System" is wrong and "publisher=KBS World Radio" is correct, or how you (or anyone) would know to format it the latter way instead of the former. Also, there was no "of" in the RIAK's name on the old website, hence its absence from the article. And why change the Korean language template from "lang-ko" to "Korean"?

Also, why the change from "last=Hong, first=Gil-dong" to "author=Hong Gil-dong"? If the former is wrong then why is it in the citation template? (not challenging you, just trying to figure this mess out.) For author names in Korean-language articles, WP:KOREA actually says to use the first & last fields to write "last=Hong 홍, first=Gil-dong 길동". Obviously I haven't gone so far as to add the hangul, ha ha.

By the way, I hate this process and am never doing it again, LOL. I don't think 90% of the requested changes enhance the article quality. Kind of funny when you consider the kpop editors who've accused us of being overly picky when compared to the absurd level of non-substantive nitpicking that goes on outside the little kpop bubble! LOL~ Shinyang-i (talk) 18:56, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Shinyang-i: Work/website puts the words in italics, which should only be used for books, newspapers, journals, magazines, etc. (I figured this out by looking at how more experienced editors edit non-Kpop music articles.) RIAK's website says "Recording Industry Association of Korea". I changed the template to Korean because "lang-ko" was used incorrectly (the romanization was in the same parameter as the Hangul script, and was showing up in a different font as a result). I formatted the Korean authors' names that way because I read somewhere to do it that way for Korean names (and other names that have the family name first) This could have been in another featured list discussion? It makes sense to me. By the way, I don't think the other editors are really nitpicking. I think maybe you are taking it a little too personally? Some things just need to be explained, on both sides. For example, why the Korean titles need to be there, or why publisher should be linked at every occurrence or just the first time. Random86 (talk) 05:28, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
Great explanations, I appreciate it. RIAK's new site has the "of", the old one doesn't, so I'll just leave it, LOL. Sounds like there is conflicting instruction on how to format Korean names (no shock there). I didn't think your change was wrong, I just wondered what was behind it. And I didn't mean they were picking at things that shouldn't be picked at necessarily (although I do find most of them kind of pointless), just that they were picking at little details that drew all the ref changes to my attention. Nitpicking isn't necessarily a bad thing, though I suppose the word does have a negative connotation. The editor in question has a way of phrasing things that makes them personal, and the lack of ability/willingness to point to the explanation in writing is frustrating. That's just how I learn - by reading instructions myself, not by being told "do this, do that". It's no big deal. Thanks again for the explanations! Shinyang-i (talk) 11:13, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, some of the comments implied you were the page's only editor, which of course isn't correct. lack of ability/willingness to point to the explanation in writing is frustrating – I agree this is frustrating, but a lot of this stuff is not actually written down anywhere (as far I as I can tell), making the learning curve much harder. That's one of the oddest things about Wikipedia to me. Like, why does the ref toolbar encourage putting the name of the website in the "website" field if that is not actually correct a lot of the time? Random86 (talk) 21:41, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

List of girl groups

Oops, I think I might have interrupted you working on List of girl groups. If so, sorry about that. I'm done for now. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 21:43, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi!

I know this is weird but do you mind explaining to me what is a consensus on wikipedia? I looked up its wikipedia page but i have a very, very hard time understanding it. :( (no that I am saying that the page is bad) Thank you! Again I'm sorry for the inconvenience. 75.37.14.77 (talk) 23:35, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Hello. I'll try to help you if I can. Did you read Wikipedia:Consensus? Random86 (talk) 23:42, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I have read Wikipedia:Consensus. However, I am particularly confused on how i can achieve it, and what it means for someone to edit someone else's edits because of "no consensus". If there is no consensus, how may I acieve it for that particular case? (the one i mentioned earlier) ^_^ Thank You for answering. :) 75.37.14.77 (talk) 23:52, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
Are you referring to adding a members table and/or birth dates? If so, I recommend starting a new discussion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Korea/Popular culture. For some background on this issue you might want to read Talk:Girls' Generation#Member section (and the earlier discussions I linked there), Talk:U-KISS#Members table, and User talk:Drmies/Archive 85#K-pop members section, again. Random86 (talk) 00:19, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you! Now i understand. Thank you for your time. :) 75.37.14.77 (talk) 02:14, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Uee

I noticed you undo the changes I made because of "Unexplained changes".

If you looked closely at most of the South Korean actors page, there seemed to have some understanding or standardizing that "Baeksang" is used instead of "Paeksang" and "51st Baeksang Arts Awards" instead of just "51st Paeksang Arts Awards".

If there are so many ways to refer to the same things or format, isn't it very confusing and messy? There are much time and efforts put up many people to tidy up so don't demoralize and discourage them from contributing.Jjaey (talk) 03:49, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Did you look at WP:SEAOFBLUE? Using a "more specific single link" is recommended. Linking to 51st Paeksang Arts Awards is better than linking to 51st Paeksang Arts Awards per the MOS. As for the romanization, it doesn't really matter if it's Paeksang or Baeksang, but the name of the page is Paeksang Arts Awards, not Baeksang Arts Awards. If you're going to insist on "Baeksang" you should request a page move on Paeksang Arts Awards and all related pages. Random86 (talk) 06:47, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Girls' Generation discography

Hello Random86. I think Studio albums section should spliting Re-released out to new section because other artist Discography do this such as Katy Perry discography. She was released Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection that was Reissue or Repackage album same Girls' Generation. Importantly, it should not combine charts and sales between standard edition and Repackage edtion because it is different time to release. What do you think about this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Enjoyso (talkcontribs) 09:28, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

The reason I thought indicating repackage under the original album looks better (in GG's case) is because there are not much charting information on those repackages and it seems to me Korean/Japanese media tends to lump sump the total sales off all the versions together.--TerryAlex (talk) 16:31, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Sorry to butt-in, but what TerryAlex said is correct: Korean charts lump the sales of original releases and all repackages together as one album rather than separate albums/releases. Katzenlibrary (talk) 18:30, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Minx Redirects

Hi Random86, I saw you moved the Minx (South Korean band) page to Minx (band). Thanks for that. Someone moved it to MINX (band), which isn't the way K-pop articles are traditionally formatted, so I moved it back to Minx (band). Somehow, there are multiple redirect pages now: MINX (band) and Minx (south Korean band). You may or may not have the answer to this question, but is there anything I/you need to do about the redirects? I know a bot comes through and cleans them up, but I didn't know if there were any responsibilities on the editors' end. Thanks! Katzenlibrary (talk) 16:10, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Katzenlibrary, editors are supposed to check for double redirects and fix them. I don't know if there were any in this instance, and a bot does fix them if any are missed. Does that answer your question? Sorry for the late response. Random86 (talk) 05:53, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

and on and on goes the FLC

I think it's becoming a little ridiculous. :( I've realized that these reviews are largely the personal tastes of whatever editors happen to show up at the review. There's been some constructive feedback, but by and large it's been making annoying changes that have no impact on clarity or conformity to any established MOS (the discog MOS is not established, even). One knowledgeable editor says "do this" at some point, and then another knowledgeable editor says "do the exact opposite" at some later time, and it's all based really on their personal preference. I'm willing to do all the pointless things that have been suggested with the exception of the references for every single. I think he/she somehow thinks this is vital because he/she is unfamiliar with the music or something, because I've looked around and it's not done anywhere else. What is your experience with this? (Also, I'm again struck by the irony of the excruciatingly detailed nature of the demands on this FLC, while in the meantime, probably 100 utterly non-conforming-to-anything-at-all-and-never-to-be-anything-but-total-crap kpop articles have been created. I just keep thinking the efforts of knowledgeable editors could be so so so much better used...) Oh well, complaint time is over, but I do want to know your opinion of these reference demands. :) Shinyang-i (talk) 14:58, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Shinyang-i you are exactly right in thinking that I am unfamiliar with Shinhwa's music, and that's exactly why I think the singles need sourcing. Wikipedia articles are not made with solely experts of the subject in mind, if that's what you think, create Shinhwa.wikia.com for the upmost experts in their music to contribute, however here, articles must be informative to every reader. To top that, you've nominated the article for WP:Featured list class, which if you read the Wikipedia:Featured list criteria would know that "A featured list exemplifies our very best work. It covers a topic that lends itself to list format (see WP:List) and, in addition to meeting the requirements for all Wikipedia content (particularly naming conventions, neutrality, no original research, verifiability, citations, reliable sources, living persons, non-free content and what Wikipedia is not) a featured list has the following attributes:" I sympathize with your comment about how there's ridiculously tedious requests made at FLC's (some coming from me), but of the 4,211 discography article on the site, a mere 211 are featured, so they have to be the of the highest standard possible.
While you say "I'm willing to do all the pointless things that have been suggested with the exception of the references for every single." I implore you to do the exact opposite, personal preference changes such as moving references and removing a "See..." at the top of the page? I can deal with not happening, but promoting a list for featured status while a large portion of it's content is unverified? I'll never support that. Azealia911 talk 01:35, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
Um, I was discussing this with another editor, the whole process, not YOU specifically. I can piss and moan if I want to; it's allowed. Of course I didn't ping you because I didn't plan to conduct "official" FLC business outside of the FLC forum. But thanks for stalking me like a creeper. However, I'm glad you confirmed for me that only music YOU aren't familiar with needs extraordinary levels of sourcing. I wouldn't know a 50Cent song if it slapped me in the face, yet his FL discography does not have a damn source for every single. You're being discriminatory and borderline racist ("it's not from MY culture so it's weird and unverified!"). And don't ever bring up that Wikia bullshit to me; I've spend months upon months telling kpop groupies to go there if they wanna list every outfit every stupid girl group wears in every stupid music video and do zodiac readings for boyband heartthrobs. I made a good discography with levels of sourcing equivalent to those found in other Wikipedia FL discographies, not some Wikia-level fanshit. You cannot make up your own rules and threaten people just because you don't like foreign stuff; people like you are the exact reason Wikipedia editor retention is so bad. Shinyang-i (talk) 04:09, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

I am adding the refs for singles using real sources (not music videos, which won't work for Shinhwa anyway). Please don't add any retail sites as refs, because they aren't desirable in the first place and prove nothing but a song's existence anyway. Sourcing the singles isn't really that hard; I was mainly objecting to being singled out (which I was; this isn't the norm at all) and his reasons for the singling out (he'd never heard of Shinhwa - worst reason ever and blatantly discriminatory). Oh and suggesting I go to Wikia, of course. Anyway, I did 95% of the work on this discog so please let me be the one to renominate it and don't take orders from someone who admits they know nothing about the subject matter. He drove me into the hospital with his antics, so I'd appreciate it if he'd just go away and leave this discography full of weird, unfamiliar foreign stuff alone. I appreciate all your help throughout these months on Wikipedia, Random86. And if you're reading this, Azaelia-whatever, please just let it go, okay? Any further interaction with me will only serve as harassment because I openly and firmly do not wish to speak to you in any way. Thank you. Shinyang-i (talk) 02:44, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

I only planned on re-nominating because you gave the impression you were retiring from Wikipedia. You are the most knowledgeable on Shinhwa, so it's best for you to add the refs. I'm sorry you were hospitalized, but your response to Azealia911 was an overreaction. If you wouldn't have withdrawn the nomination, the situation may have been resolved by now. Azealia911 was starting to understand how the Korean music industry works. By the way, the Melon link for "Just One More Time" did say the song was a single (싱글), but a third-party ref is obviously better. Random86 (talk) 04:36, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
Your opinion is duly noted. You could have contacted me instead of assuming. Azaelia911's understanding of any subject is not necessary for anything related to this FLC. He is just one editor and has relatively little experience, and is a startling hypocrite who didn't see fit to hold the discog he just nom'd for FL to the same standard he demanded from me. He's heard of that artist, so it's okay I suppose. Anyway, please don't analyze my behavior and judge. It's simply not necessary for anything. We are different people, and that's okay. Lecturing me won't make the situation better. Anyway, this was just a courtesy heads up and a plea not to make weird changes to the article based on a relative newbie with little FL experience. I won't bother you again, based on your personal comments, but please just leave the discog alone, if you'd be so kind. Shinyang-i (talk) 07:44, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
I guess I shouldn't have assumed, but I was really thinking you weren't coming back. You have a notice on your talk page saying not to contact you there. I shouldn't have to e-mail you and reveal my e-mail address to discuss something like that. That's all I'm going to say right now. Random86 (talk) 09:48, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

BigBang charts

Why did you remove the charts for numerous Southeast Asian countries on the singles pages for some of Big Bang's new songs? The chart is legitimate here's an independent source: [[1]]. (124.180.107.200 (talk) 11:42, 28 July 2015 (UTC))

I removed them because I wasn't sure they are suitable charts according to WP:CHART, particularly because there is a no archive to verify chart positions. I suggest you start a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Record charts if you think these charts should be recommended for use on Wikipedia. Random86 (talk) 05:58, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
According to the List of record charts, Music Weekly is recognised. (121.214.33.76 (talk) 08:13, 29 July 2015 (UTC))
Being listed there doesn't necessarily mean anything. That is an article, not a guideline. Random86 (talk) 09:22, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't understand, why would it be listed as a chart if it's not recognised as a genuine chart by Wikipedia, that's just going against everything Wikipedia stands for, it would mean none of its rules and regulations are valid. (138.217.69.44 (talk) 09:30, 29 July 2015 (UTC))
I'm not sure what you mean by "genuine chart". I'm not saying the chart doesn't exist. iTunes and Amazon have music charts, but they aren't suitable for inclusion on Wikipedia. Also, there are many articles that aren't in line with Wikipedia rules. Random86 (talk) 19:17, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Awards and Noms by VIXX

Hey Random86

Can we have some help over on List of awards and nominations received by VIXX, while I am pretty damn sure Big Byung shouldn't be listed under VIXX since it isn't really associated with that group there is this person that keeps adding what I suspect are fan awards including Big Byung.. Perhaps you would know? Alicia leo86 (talk) 04:30, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Alicia leo86 Yes, Big Byung awards definitely should not be listed there. I just removed some fan awards I recognized, but I haven't researched all of these awards so I could have missed some. I hope that answers your question. Random86 (talk) 05:54, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Replaced images

Sorry to bother you! As I finished suggesting a page move for [T.O.P (entertainer)|T.O.P] to T.O.P in its talk page, I noticed one user [User:Msamiilah|Msamiilah] changed the infobox image to one of a weaker quality. They did the same thing to 13 other YG artists' page and they claim that those images are theirs. I highly doubt that they are however I don't know if it is reasonabe to revert their edits. The images seem to have been taken from Google. So here I am blabbing on your talk page since I don't know any other editors who particularly edit k-pop related articles. Idealtype 05:16, 28 August 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Idealtype (talkcontribs)

Idealtype: You definitely should revert Msamiilah's edits because those images are copyright violations. I nominated them all for speedy deletion on commons. Random86 (talk) 06:33, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

I don't know what to do with these images

Hi! I was coming here to ask you a question andsaw that the talk section above this one deals with the same sort of issue. Basically I found some photos of the k-pop group got7 in the wiki commons that claim to be original work but they aren't. All 3 are also posted by the same editor: Igotbangtanboys. I have zero clue how wikimedia works and what the process is that I should take to delete them, and was hoping you could help me or just point me in the right direction. Thank you! Peachywink (talk) 01:27, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Hey Peachywink! Obvious copyright violations can be tagged with the copyvio template (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Copyvio). I usually edit the file and add something like {{copyvio|Non-free image}}. I did one of the Got7 images so you can see it: [2]. It might be deleted before you have a chance to look. :) Random86 (talk) 08:21, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for answering so quickly. And yes it was already deleted, as were the other photos so I couldn't practice, but I looked at the pages you linked carefully and think in the future I would be able to add a template myself. Thanks again for helping! Peachywink (talk) 17:32, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Re: Boram

Yeah, in cases like this it can be hard to tell, cuz the most common Chinese transcription for Boram () happens to have the right pronunciation when you read it in Korean aside from ㄹ/ㄴ (unlike with other similar names e.g. Sora, Haneul, etc. where the Chinese transcription clearly doesn't work at all in Korean).

BTW, since both Jeon Boram and Lee Bo-ram are known mononymously as Boram, should the name page itself be moved to Bo-ram (which is now a redlink), or should Bo-ram also redirect to Jeon Boram as Wp:PRIMARYTOPIC? 58.176.246.42 (talk) 07:36, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

@58.176.246.42: I was thinking Bo-ram (name) could be moved to Bo-ram, and Boram redirect to Bo-ram. It depends on whether Jeon Boram is the primary topic or not. I'm not sure. Random86 (talk) 07:53, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

Real awards Vs Fan awards?

Hello there, I noticed you were removing awards from the VIXX LR and List of awards and nominations received by VIXX respectively, I have no problem with that however how do you know which are the real ones compared to fan awards. What are the guidelines of them being able to be listed? For example you had removed the International K Music Awards which is run by JAPAKO Music and the awards are actually given to the recipients. Alicia leo86 (talk) 15:19, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

I removed the awards that look like they are run by K-pop sites and based on fan voting. This was based on earlier discussions in WikiProject Korea. There are so many awards given out and I don't think they are all notable. I don't know anything about JAPAKO Music, but their site says they are an online magazine. In the earlier discussions, everyone agreed awards from Soompi or Allkpop should not be listed. How is this magazine any different? I wish I could get further clarification on some of these awards but it's hard to know where to have that kind of discussion. I just started a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Notability (music), so I'll see if anyone knows more. Random86 (talk) 03:20, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
I understand, although I kind of wish there was guidelines (like an actual listing) somewhere for people to read up upon them so they know what is allowed and what is not. Alicia leo86 (talk) 05:00, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi

It's been such a long time. Just want to drop by to say hi to you, buddy! Hope you are doing well!--TerryAlex (talk) 21:55, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Hey TerryAlex! It's good to hear from you. I took a break for a while but I'm back for now. Sorry I never got around to finishing the drafts we were working on. Random86 (talk) 22:04, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
I took a long break as well, but suddenly really miss Wikipedia these days. I certainly hope we can finish those drafts someday. See you around.--TerryAlex (talk) 22:30, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
Forgot to say this last time (I know I have said it a lot of times in the past), thanks very much always. Always wish I could have done more to return the favor. Don't hesitate if there comes a time when you need me on anything. Enjoy your day! :).--TerryAlex (talk) 02:33, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Random86! It's been long since we last met :) Would you mind leaving some comments at my latest FLC? Thanks! Simon (talk) 06:28, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

@: I don't feel comfortable being the first comment after this fiasco. Once there are other comments I will consider it. I spent a lot of time on T-ara discography last year (mostly adding all the chart position refs) so I'm glad you're trying to make it a FL. (BTW, "Hurt" and "Don't Get Married" most likely did chart on Gaon but there isn't an archive to prove it.) Random86 (talk) 00:43, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Seoulbeats as an RS

Hello, Random86! I noticed you removed Seoulbeats.com as a reference from IU (singer), citing unreliable source as a reason. I have noticed that the site is listed in WP:KO/RS as a unreliable source and while I agree it would be an unreliable source for a biography, I don't think it is an unreliable source for music reviews. According to WP:USERGENERATED: "Self-published material may sometimes be acceptable when its author is an established expert whose work in the relevant field has been published by reliable third-party publications..." Seoulbeats.com is listed as a partner site of The Guardian here: http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2013/sep/17/new-music-around-world-series

In fact, one of the review references I found was actually from The Guardian's site but I decided to link to the original article from Seoulbeats since they actually wrote it. It was actually through The Guardian that I found out about this site. Since Seoulbeats' articles are actually published by a reliable source (The Guardian), do you think they are an acceptable source for reviews? I agree they shouldn't be used in the biographical sections but I do think they seem credible as a review site if they are accepted by a newspaper such as The Guardian. -- Anolduser (talk) 12:42, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Hello Anolduser; thanks for your message! I was not aware that Seoulbeats.com was partnered with The Guardian. Because of that, I think their reviews are probably OK and I will restore those for now. I'll also eventually start a discussion somewhere (probably Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums) to see what more experienced users think. Random86 (talk) 22:44, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, Random86. I wasn't sure about it myself but thought I'd check. In a similar case for Soompi, they have been referenced by The Wall Street Journal and Korea Joongang Daily, though not to the extent of referencing their articles. I did browse through some of Soompi's articles and noticed that they do cite reliable sources (from what I can see), however, I'm not sure how to judge the reliability of their own original research articles. I suppose we can always use the reliable sources they cite whenever it's possible. There is also a discussion in WP:KO/RS about the uncertainty of listing Soompi as an unreliable source; I'm also not convinced that it is an unreliable source (again, from what little I have read). Perhaps the website had unreliable content when it started but now that it has grown, I'm not sure that it is still unreliable unlike Allkpop, which is described as a blog and gossip website. Anyway, it's always great that we have people who care about the quality of the articles. :) -- Anolduser (talk) 08:44, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Soompi doesn't always cite sources, unfortunately. It started out as more of a fansite, but it has grown a lot since then. It's not blatantly unreliable like Allkpop. I'm not sure what it would take to put Soompi in the "reliable" category. Random86 (talk) 00:30, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

TTS

I recently attempted to clean up the article. Does the content look better now? Please help to copyedit and reword as necessary, when you have time. Thanks! :)--TerryAlex (talk) 19:28, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Yes, it looks much better now. Nice work. :) I did some copyediting and plan to re-do some of the tables later. Random86 (talk) 00:17, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks so much, your touch just makes everything flows so much better. Yes, please help with table formatting as I'm not very familiar with it still, but I will archive and check on the chart references.--TerryAlex (talk) 06:17, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Help me look through and copyedit SY's article as well. Thanks so much. It feels embarrassing asking you for help all the time :)--TerryAlex (talk) 05:01, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Random, just wondering if you know where we can find the full list of Billboard's Kpop Top 100? I know it has been discontinued and I'm just looking at some old charts, but because the main website [3] only shows the top 50, so just wondering if there is a place where we can look at the full chart (most likely through a subscription right?)--TerryAlex (talk) 18:45, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
TerryAlex, you can see all the full Billboard charts with a subscription to Billboard.com/biz. Even without a subscription, searching the charts by artist shows their chart history, for example:
http://www.billboard.com/biz/search/charts?f[0]=ts_chart_artistname%3AGIrls%27%20Generation-TTS&f[1]=ss_bb_type%3Achart_item&type=2&artist=GIrls%27%20Generation-TTS
You have to copy and paste the link because it is not linking the whole url. Random86 (talk) 20:54, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Anything similar for Gaon chart?--TerryAlex (talk) 15:03, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately, no. Random86 (talk) 02:16, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Random, if a reliable source link is now dead and there is no archiveurl for it, are we truly out of luck unless we can find a replacement? Well, what happens is I'm reworking on Seohyun's article, and found an mwave source to be dead. I've been trying to find a replacement for it, but the only thing I can find is a translation on soshified (it was the same article & content), so....--TerryAlex (talk) 17:40, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Which link is it? Per WP:LINKROT, you can leave the dead link there and hope a live link is later found to replace it. Random86 (talk) 04:31, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
This one [4], I can only find a very similar translation here [5] I think it was one of the very few (if any) interview where she talked a bit more in details about her childhood and parents.--TerryAlex (talk) 19:26, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
Where did you get this link? I did some research and found the text of the original interview posted on blogs (e.g. [6], [7], [8]). Some posted the original source [9], but it's not archived. I think you can still use this source. Here's what the ref would look like: <ref>{{cite news|author1=Choi Eun-hwa|title=[창간특집 스타인터뷰] 소녀시대 서현이 말하는 서주현의 모든 것|url=http://enews24.interest.me/news/01/1217422_1161.html|work=enews24|publisher=CJ E&M|date=May 3, 2011|language=ko}}</ref> (Another part of the interview is still online: [10]; translation: [11]) Random86 (talk) 23:15, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
Mwave had an English translation of the same article in the link that I posted, but it's obviously not working anymore. Thanks so much. I searched all over Naver and Nate but could not find anything. :)--TerryAlex (talk) 01:05, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
I find it a bit hard for me to structure her article. I have an idea of what needs to be trimmed down from the draft I did a long time ago. Her significant work started after the formation of TTS and when her musical acting career began, but not sure what should/should not be mentioned before that.--TerryAlex (talk) 17:13, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
How does it look now? (my sandbox). Help me look over it (copyedit, reword) when you have time. Tell me if anything needs to be improved. The section I'm not so sure of is "Public image"; if you find it unnecessary, then remove it for me. Thanks!!!--TerryAlex (talk) 02:53, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
It's looking good! I'm not sure about the "Public image" section; I'll look at it again later. Taeyeon's quote about her piano playing doesn't seem to belong, so I would consider removing that. I also think Seohyun's quote about "Only U" should go in the Holler album article instead. Random86 (talk) 08:21, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Took your advice. Is it looking good to go now (except for the Public image section)? Is there anyways we can rephrase the very first paragraph a bit? It doesn't flow very well to me.--TerryAlex (talk) 17:06, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

How is the first paragraph now? The Public image section might be better without the first sentence about Tiffany. The rest is more about her public image, so I think it's probably ok. Random86 (talk) 00:19, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

It's your call. I don't mind taking it out as I was not sure myself either. --TerryAlex (talk) 00:43, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Random, just a quick question, I thought there was an agreement to remove "hanja" sometimes ago? Thanks!--TerryAlex (talk) 13:26, 17 April 2016 (UTC)

Only if it's unsourced, and it has to be a Korean source. Random86 (talk) 13:36, 17 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Random86, do you know what would be the best English-equivalent words for "Daesang" and "Bonsang" awards? Or what would be the best explanation for the words, because just stating "someone has won 2 Daesang and 2 Bonsang", does not really mean anything to me?--TerryAlex (talk) 17:00, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

They literally mean Grand Prize (Daesang) and Main Prize (Bonsang). I would probably write something like "Artist won a Daesang (Grand Prize)". Bonsang is a little harder to understand, because it's an award, but also a nomination for Daesang. If you write "Artist won a Bonsang at the Seoul Music Awards", it's clear from the context that bonsang is an award, and the links can be clicked for more info. You can also write it the other way, like "Artist won a Main Prize (Bonsang)". Random86 (talk) 21:15, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
Don't you think a term like "Top 10" sounds more distinguishable to describe "Bonsang"? because when I hear "Grand Prize" and "Main Prize" next to each other, they just sound too similar to me. Just a thought. Thanks always!!!--TerryAlex (talk) 02:52, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

Woolliment comment

[Trans}Hi, this is woolliment official, please do not undo any changes that have just been made. Thankyou, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Woolliment (talkcontribs) 04:16, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Again, Woollim Entertainment does not WP:OWN the article. The list of trainees is unsourced, and their notability is unclear. Next time, include a third-party reliable source. Random86 (talk) 11:03, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Just FYI, that account was blocked for WP:CORPNAME, legal threats and sock puppetry. What a piece of work. --Drm310 (talk) 04:52, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Random, do you know what this is? Is this just imaginary stuff? Drmies (talk) 17:27, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

@Drmies: It looks made up to me. Speaking of sandboxes, I think User:Emzidrama/sandbox is maintained as an alternative to those List of South Korean idol groups pages. Random86 (talk) 00:24, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I nominated the Sukrovishte sandbox at MfD. The Emzidrama one, I suppose we should let that stand since someone could conceivably claim it's viable in article space. (It's not, but the claim can be made.) Take care, Drmies (talk) 14:38, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Yoo Ji-ae image

Hey Random,

Yeah, while it appears that the image has an acceptable licence on Commons, when you check the origin here it quite quickly becomes apparent that it is a copyvio and that the uploader has removed the watermark by cropping the image. Hence the revert. Karst (talk) 12:01, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Karst, the origin page has an acceptable license (CC BY 4.0). Look for the Commons logo at the bottom of the page. Cropping is allowed as long as it's noted. Random86 (talk) 12:07, 27 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. Other images from the page have been tagged too on Commons and it appears odd to have a CC licence but then add a watermark. I will leave it to the expert admins on Commons to decide what to do with it. Karst (talk) 12:14, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

DYK for The Sound of a Flower

On 14 April 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Sound of a Flower, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that The Sound of a Flower is based on the life of Jin Chae-seon, who became Joseon's first female pansori singer in 1867, when women were forbidden to perform on stage? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Sound of a Flower. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, The Sound of a Flower), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
