Thanks for letting me know of your request to delete this page. I guess I can understand why you have suggested some references be deleted (though I believe the SVM stuff is directly related), but I don't understand why or the rationale for the entire article deletion. I will study more closely and respond directly on the article Talk page. At any rate, I appreciate the courtesy to notify me. Mkbergman (talk) 01:30, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[Qwertyus -- this a copy of something I've just shared with Dragan -- dig it!!!] My friend Dragan! First of all, I see that you have been recognized by one of my few other Wikipedia buddies QWERTYVS [or is it QWERTYUS ?]; and so I draw your joint attention to the anomalous Wikipedia entry on the movie "Red Planet Mars", which movie (which I have just viewed on Youtube) was a quite heartfelt and anomalous comment on the possibility that compassion is a universal reality! But the Wikipedia entry itself is way, way out there! Synchronist (talk) 05:33, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Date format in Linux articles[edit]

Hello! Any chances, please, for you to have a look at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Software § Date format in release history sections of Linux articles and possibly comment there by providing your point of view? The whole thing is pretty much poorly discussed with only a few editors actually discussing it, while it seems to be affecting more than a few articles (and the date format seems to be extending beyond the tables into references, please see history of the Linux distribution article). Any contributions to the discussion would be highly appreciated! — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 02:39, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Dear[edit]

I am thankful for you for correcting and showing the correct way of editing done by me. I am sorry, I was really very aggressive and it is but natural that I was so inclined toward DB article that it looked like doing partisan activity. I being declared DB, I have disadvantage and I should have taken extra care of that factor before doing any editing that I should avoid making comments which depict doing favours without any Wikipedian proof, and now after succession controversy, I should have learnt that I don't have now any rights to do good faith editing on DB articles at least.

Aggressive actions by a specific editor has given me opportunity to learn the fact, but I also thanks him also for teaching me a lesson, but let me warned him that Wiki have system and fellow editors like you, user:Anupmehra, User:Occultzone , any many more including admin involved, will not allow him the activity which he started doing aggressively after 29th Nov, deleting well sourced material of his dislike and adding material of own controlled partisan websites of his favour.--Md iet (talk) 04:32, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Biometric Devices[edit]

I certainly do not wish to start an edit war, but I do believe it was inappropriate to delete my stub article without discussion.

I quote from your reference:

"Both dictionary entries at Wiktionary and encyclopedia articles at Wikipedia may start out as stubs, but they are works in progress, to be expanded. Wikipedia articles should begin with a good definition, but they should provide other types of information about that topic as well. The full articles that Wikipedia's stubs grow into are very different from dictionary entries."

I should think that, given your concerns, you might have tagged the article with {{Dicdef}}.

This article is meant to discuss the specifics of Biometric devices, a topic frequently mentioned in other WP articles.

The Biometric topic does not mention biometric devices, but rather the measurements made by such devices.

I believe my article should be reverted back to the original that I created and researched.

Without discussion I will revert it back and ask for arbitration.

BST consistency checking[edit]

I saw your edits to the binary search tree article, which are cool, and I thought I’d add a comment: when I have a data structure with some complex invariant that has to be maintained over time, such as the BST ordering condition, it’s often useful to have code to check whether that invariant holds or not. That way, when my code doesn’t work, I can check to see if it’s because the invariant of that data structure is getting broken, or for some other reason; and by invoking that code repeatedly, I can find out when it is getting broken.

Not that this belongs in the article; I just thought you might be interested in when someone might run into this problem outside of problem sets. Kragen Javier Sitaker (talk) 05:57, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A/UX teamwork barnstar for you![edit]

The Teamwork Barnstar
Thank you very much for working with me on A/UX. You seriously brought the goods. I see on your User page that you are extremely good at this and wicked smart. I had been sad that the article was so lame and subjective, but I had no idea the subject was so relatively robust and amazingly foundational to 1990s enterprise computing culture until you brought all those great sources. By 1997, I knew someone who had a BeBox, I knew someone with MachTen, I had a Mac IIsi with NetBSD and System 7.7 beta, but I had never heard of A/UX. I'm so sad. I should like to emulate it once the guy implements networking support. Let us raise our emulators and toast. Furthermore, I am a reference formatting wizard, and I regularly use named and list-based references with Template:Rp for pages, but you blew my mind with something which I can't believe I never heard of: Template:R. fcntl()[edit]

Hello. I want to know your opinion about having a separate article about fcntl() system call. I think it is notable enough to have a separate page, it is standardized by POSIX.1, besides that, there are some independent, reliable sources such as:

  • W. Richard, Stevens; Stephen A., Rago (May 24, 2013). Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment (Third ed.). Addison-Wesley Professional. p. 82. ISBN 978-0321637734. Retrieved 27 February 2015.

  • Kerrisk, Michael (October 28, 2010). The Linux Programming Interface. No Starch Press. p. 92. ISBN 978-1593272203.
  • Rochkind, Marc J. (May 9, 2004). Advanced UNIX Programming (2nd ed.). Addison-Wesley Professional. p. 187. ISBN 978-0131411548.

Thank you. -- Bkouhi (talk) 18:12, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Do any of those sources provide significant coverage besides simple usage, like the kind of history we have in Fork (system call)? I'm certainly not in favor of reinstating the old content, which goes against WP:NOTMANUAL. If you do have good additional material, you can also post it to File descriptor first, then see if the topic deserves its own article. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 20:03, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The coverage is somewhat significant in various sources, but this coverage is just technical details, not like fork(), thus the article would not be more than another man page and it is hard to provide encyclopedic description. I'm now convinced that a separate article is not needed. But good idea, since this system call has been widely covered by reliable sources, IMHO it should be somehow covered by Wikipedia too, and the File descriptor article is a good place to start. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you. -- Bkouhi (talk) 21:03, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Blurbs[edit]

Hello Qwertyus,

You have twice removed a brief, referenced quotation from a museum website, the Kunsthal, providing critical commentary about an artist Carolein Smit who had a major three month solo exhibition there in 2010. You have called such a quote a "blurb" from an "advertisement". I do not believe that a respected museum's own web page is an "advertisement" and I believe that brief quotations of the descriptions published by the curators of such museums are worthy of inclusion in biographies of notable artists, especially five years after the exhibition has ended. I find this especially surprising given that you dd not remove some clearly promotional language referenced to the website of a commercial gallery that sells her work. I consider that paragraph far more problematic and had intended to remove it once I had added new content to the article. That's much more of a "blurb" in my opinion than the museum content you removed. I am interested in a more detailed explanation of your reasoning in this matter. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:09, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't removed the other bits because I did now. Mentioning an exhibition at the Kunsthal is fine, but citing the museum's own announcement doesn't add any value, IMO. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 09:44, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

An issue with the Formal logic link[edit]

I appreciate your reversion of my edit to the Prolog article's link to the formal logic article. Unfortunately, "formal logic" automatically redirect to the Mathematical logic article, which you find in error. Just to let you know so you can maybe cleanup that that redirect or discuss it on a relevant talk page. Cheers! Bumm13 (talk) 13:41, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, you already fixed it! :D Bumm13 (talk) 13:42, 16 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I find it rather strange that enwiki has no article about formal or symbolic logic per se, but the redirect to mathematical logic is simply in error. In casual parlance, the two might be the same, but among logicians, mathematical logic is really the application of logic to mathematics: metamathematics, proof theory, etc. Not the application to arbitrary programming problems that people do in Prolog. The lion in love[edit]

Hi, Qwertyus, I note that you have queried my use of primary sources in the Idioms section of the above article and am rather puzzled by what you expect in their place. To begin with, I give a Google Books ref for an adult romance novel, as I've seen many others do in Wiki articles. There's a romance website with a review, and mentions of the book on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble; would they be viable and in what way would they be superior? Or are you looking for evidence that a reference to the idiom is intended by the author?

I guess one could ask the same question about paintings with that title. And in the case of associated idioms, is a dictionary reference rather than evidence that they were used in the past preferable? I'd be grateful if you could point me to the guidelines on use of primary sources so that I can avoid such pitfalls in future. Thx Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 13:21, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm looking for evidence of intended reference. This is Wikipedia policy (WP:ANALYSIS):
Policy: Wikipedia articles usually rely on material from reliable secondary sources. Articles may make an analytic or evaluative claim only if that has been published by a reliable secondary source.
The Lion in Love (fable)#Idioms only cites novels and asserts, without proof, that all these works of art refer to the Greek fable. You should really cite some literary criticism for this kind of thing. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 14:30, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You're looking for intended reference to an English idiom? Forgive me, but this seems like a personal interpretation of guidelines. Since I've had bad experiences with self-appointed policeman on WP, I must ask you if you are an administrator. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 18:08, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an admin. I'm not sure what you mean by an English idiom; you're connecting English, Russian and French works with a Greek fable. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 20:20, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up. I've now rewritten parts of the article and added some references. Mzilikazi1939 (talk) 12:40, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edges vs arcs[edit]

"Feedback edge set" has about 286 hits on Google scholar, while "feedback arc set" has about 1460. So regardless of whether "edge" or "arc" is in more common usage more generally in graph theory, it seems clear to me that "feedback arc set" is the much more frequently used name for this problem. In addition, "arc" has the advantage that (when used in graph theory) it unambiguously refers to directed graphs, while "edge" could be for either the directed or undirected case (although the undirected case of this problem is not very interesting as an algorithmic problem). Based on that, and WP:COMMONNAME, would you please reverse your recent move to the less-common name? —David Eppstein (talk) 22:04, 9 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@David Eppstein: did that, thanks for doing some research. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 07:33, 10 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Signing Edits[edit]

Heya, thanks for the help!

Should I re-do my changes so they are signed? Also, I contributed to the page a bit when I was not signed up (so my IP is shown). Is there any way for me to change that so it shows my name now? (On the view history page)

LythPython (talk) 00:27, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
No, you should only sign edits on talk pages. To be honest, I'm not aware of any way to claim IP edits. You could ask over at the WP:Help desk.

Hosting Controller[edit]

I have now added appropriate 3rd party references to the article.--HostingController123 (talk) 22:28, 31 May 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by HostingController123 (talkcontribs) 22:20, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@HostingController123: a business partner is obviously not a third-party. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 06:21, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I do not understand how this article is inappropriate. Hosting Controller is a notable and reliable control panel and has been in the market for 15 years now. People have the right to know about it. Its part of the following Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_hosting_control_panels and it shows that its a popular software. It has a huge following. The style is not promotional and the list of competition in the article proves that. I am unable to link the dead reference. How to do that ? Besides if you can provide solid suggestions to improve it you are always welcome.--Yul at Hosting Controller (talk) 07:12, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Yul at Hosting Controller: you need to prove the notability of software by coming up with unaffiliated references that provide significant coverage. Inclusion in the Comparison of web hosting control panels doesn't prove anything, except that some random Wikipedia contributor added it. A "huge following" needs to be proven. Existing for fifteen years doesn't mean anything either. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 08:24, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As required I have now included ample 3rd party (unaffiliated) references establishing notability of Hosting Controller and providing significant coverage to it. Please check the inline references.--Yul at Hosting Controller (talk) 13:27, 3 June 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yul at Hosting Controller (talkcontribs) 13:21, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Need citation/Clarification[edit]

Can you please provide the reference or context for arriving with following statement? When employed in industrial contexts, machine learning methods may be referred to as predictive analytics or predictive modelling. Thanks naren (talk) 12:41, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

nvattikuti take it to Talk:Machine learning. I'm not sure why you're asking me, I only toned down that statement. QVVERTYVS (hm?) 14:20, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
