Question for administrator[edit]

{{admin help}}

I'm a newbie. Please go easy on me!

I may need to have an image deleted that I posted today. The name of the file I have contributed is "The Apple - 1970 - 76x92cm.jpeg". I was given a disc of images by an artist whom I am creating a page for, so believed that I was okay to post the images, as I (retrospectively and now obviously) did not fully understand the copyright legalities that apply to Wikipedia images. It was not until I posted a second image that I fully realised the copyright laws that apply to Wikipedia. The second image was titled 'Ivan Durrant 2011.jpeg'. I ticked the License box to say that this image was not to be used outside of Wikipedia, and subsequently got the speedy deletion message. The image has been speedy deleted - the following details are copied from the deletion log: "11:57, 21 January 2012 RHaworth (talk | contribs) deleted "File:Ivan Durrant 2011.JPG" ‎ (F3: Media file with improper license)".

My issue now lies with The Apple image. I will be contacting the artist tomorrow to discuss what his stand is regarding the images. If the images are not to be released without a copyright protection, is there a possibility that The Apple can be removed before the 28th of Jan 2012, which is the specified date for its removal???

Additionally, I need clarification on how to upload images to the page that I am creating for the artist. I am currently using the Sandbox, and can't seem to work out how to post images to that page, without creating a new page for each image. Where am I going wrong?

Thank you and best regards.

If you want those images deleted, you can just tag them with {{db-g7}} or leave a note on my talk page and I'll zap them. That said, you cannot upload an image directly to an article; you can only upload them to the file namespace and, then, place them on the article using a wikilink. This tutorial should be quite useful... Salvio Let's talk about it! 13:49, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

---:Thanks for your help Salvio. I'll investigate that information tomorrow after I talk with the artist about the images and the copyright regulations. Regards.

I have requested that the image titled "The Apple - 1970 - 76x92cm.jpeg" - which I contributed the other day - be deleted, due to the fact that it is high-resolution, as I suspect that in its current format, would vioate copyright regulations. Having said that, I would still like to contribute (with the artist's permission) lo-resolution versions of the images. Having looked at the Wiki-page for Australian artist Sidney Nolan (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sidney_Nolan_-Kelly-the_trial.jpg) and the discussion about fair-use that is outlined underneath the image "The Trial", I would like to clarify whether simply posting lo-res images constitutes "Fair Use" within United States copyright law, OR is it still necessary to get a declaration from the artist? He is happy to supply that information if required.

I'm going to go ahead and copy this request to the Wikipedia:Media copyright questions noticeboard. The editors there are going to be much better at answering than I. Remember to keep an eye on that page and follow up if they answer, or if they have additional questions. Good luck! UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 15:36, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I also removed the duplicate request, above. FYI. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 15:36, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Ivan_Durrant_2011.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ivan_Durrant_2011.JPG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 03:43, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for File:Drive_in_Flinders_-_1971_-_67x92cm.jpeg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Drive_in_Flinders_-_1971_-_67x92cm.jpeg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 03:43, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Dicker_Road_Sheep_Floor_-_1997_-_92x121cm.jpeg[edit]

I have tagged File:Dicker_Road_Sheep_Floor_-_1997_-_92x121cm.jpeg as a disputed use of non-free media, because there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please clarify your fair use rationale on the image description page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 03:43, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
