I don't have much to talk about but here goes:

Annoying...

You (in other words, me) know what's annoying? When you get some idiots who don't know what they're doing on Wikipedia. They make some articles with horrible spelling and grammer, two spaces after every sentence, and completely horrible linking. They don't check if a link exists before they make it, they don't look for it under different names, they don't understand Wikipedia syntax, etc. They just write it. Also, it sounds crappy. Know what else? When someone else reads it and DOES NOTHING! I just spent over two hours going through this idiot's Golden Sun character pages and fixing all of the above errors (I'm sure I missed a few minor ones). I then had to go to the redirect pages someone else created for the idiot's links and find everything that linked there and fix those links. I then went here to get them deleted. I mean, I know how big Wikipedia is, but I wish it looked as good as Memory Alpha. They run one tight ship over there. People shouldn't be allowed to edit if they don't know how to spell, use commas, spacing, or, most importantly here, Wiki format. I mean, I'm not perfect, but seriously! 06:00, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Spaces?

Isn't it correct to have two spaces after each sentence?

Hi! Thanks for all of the useful links. I am also sorry for leaving the tabor address in the article- As you can see, I obviously stole it from their site. Thanks again! Chkiss 02:14, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

It used to be, and is still sometimes considered proper form in business correspondence. However, in most cases it is now considered archaic.

The double spaces were used because some letters are wider than others in a fixed font, and could make for ugly kerning. Proportional fonts (Adobe, TT) changed all that, and two spaces after a sentence are no longer necessary or common. SicTim (talk) 14:27, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Editing user pages

The only changes I'll ever make to a user's page: 1) reverting vandalism; and 2)fixing links. Yours was #2. I'm always very careful about it. --nihon 21:44, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

reverting Mnemonic page

I am curious as to why you reverted about three and half month's worth of edits in Mnemonic the other day. There were several good contributions to that page over that time and I see no reason to delete it all out (rather than manually going through and deleting unneeded information, for example). There may have been many needed edits that you thoughtlessly removed. I would simply revert your reversion, but I assume you have a reason and I would like to hear it first. Thanks.-Platypus Man | Talk 06:34, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Platypus222. That revert was a mistake on my part and I'm not sure how it happened. I went and set it back to version '00:09, 11 February 2006'. It's very strange, the October version wouldn't even have been available for me to select on the history page. Monkeyman 14:13, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
I added back the edits from the last few days as well. Thanks for bringing this to my attention and also thanks for assuming good faith! Monkeyman 18:09, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Ethan Rom

Has the origin of his name been confirmed by the writers, or is this fan speculation/original research? Jtrost (T | C | #) 23:26, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Seeing how it's pure speculation, I don't think it's appropriate for Wikipedia. Jtrost (T | C | #) 13:31, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Dave Mordal.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Dave Mordal.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 07:48, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:RJ_Reynolds_High_School_Front.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:RJ_Reynolds_High_School_Front.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Redirects

It's no big deal, but you can't get redirects to go to a specific part of a page (like Final Fantasy III DS). It really doesn't hurt anything, but it doesn't accomplish anything either. Just figured I'd tell you... -Platypus Man | Talk 23:51, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

In response to your Trivia Cleanup talk post

If you feel the need, I suppose the trivia (that is useful at least)..should be re-added to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Just remember, Wikipedia isn't against trivia, but just limits them to small sections. If you can put the trivia in the article itself (in other sections), then go ahead. Remember: Wikipedia isn't a fan's guide to every little note (minor or major), it's an encyclopedia. The Cleanup project isn't for removing each and every trivia section, just making them smaller. I think you somehow think Wikipedia should list everything interesting about a subject, but that's not the case. If you open a normal paper edition of an encyclopedia, you won't find endless trivia sections on subjects there. A web version is no different. If you happen to see a trivia section just removed (and no important information put back in the article), report it as vandalism. I hope this helped, and cleared things up. RobJ1981 04:33, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Well the policies for trivia cleanup aren't set in stone, and could be changed if needed. People don't always follow the policies anyway. If a person doesn't read the policies (which I'm sure many don't...), then they just edit trivia how they like. That's something I can't control, nor wish to. If people vandalize by removing trivia that shouldn't be removed, it should be reported. I agree somewhat on your note on my talk page of: If something is complete speculation, coincidental, or irrelevant to the article at hand, then I see no problem with deleting it. I'll try to update the trivia cleanup policies and make it improved so at least some problems are solved. I know the users of the project, read the policies more... so that will at least help them out with trivia issues like the one that happened at the Final Fantasy page. Request for Adminship

It is my regretful task to inform you that I have closed your request for adminship early as unlikely to achieve consensus. Please do not be discouraged; a number of users have had their first RfA end without consensus, but have been promoted overwhelmingly in a later request. Please continue to make outstanding contributions to Wikipedia, and consider requesting adminship again in the future. You may find Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship helpful in deciding when to consider running again. If I can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate to ask. Winston-Salem slang

Yes, I agree that the slang section doesn't really belong in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina because it's not really all that "encylcopiedic", but a number of editors keep adding that info in over and over. So all I'm saying is that you'll probably receive lots reverts from those editors and those sympathetic to them. If they can find a source for that stuff, then I'm fine with it. Just a heads up. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gooday.1 (talkcontribs) 15:01, 25 January 2007 (UTC).

License tagging for Image:Bh4j.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bh4j.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Image:Hefny.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Hefny.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 48 hours after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 18:19, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

"You lost your chance."

I lost my chance, eh? Your one opinion isn't "clear consensus" for anything, even if I didn't show up within your set time limits. You lost your chance to gather consensus. 1ne 07:07, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

No, it doesn't seem that I'd like to show up and change the 'consensus'; it seems that you based 'clear consensus' on two IPs. 1ne 22:33, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

It is my opinion that because there wasn't much discussion to begin with, a person coming in to oppose is better late than never. People aren't capable of keeping on top of everything, and plus varying opinions are always good. Could you consider re-opening the discussion? Signed, your friendly neighborhood MessedRocker. 02:52, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

A question about Image:Metroid Justin Bailey.png...

Wow! A message regarding an image that's not from a boilerplate template! Weird, huh? :-)

Seriously, though, I just have a quick question: you reverted the image Image:Metroid Justin Bailey.png to an earlier version. I certainly don't want to get into an fight over this, so I won't push the matter, but I'm curious as to why. The problem with the original image, as discussed briefly on Talk:Nintendo Entertainment System, is that it actually does a pretty lousy job of capturing what the picture looked like on most television sets: the palette and aspect ratio is off. Again, I'm not looking to pick a fight, and I'm not even questioning your action, per se, but I am curious about your reasons. Thanks! – Sean Daugherty (talk) 05:44, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, that's just it, really: "downgrade" is pretty much in the eye of the beholder. To be sure, the image does look crisper and the colors less washed out in the original image. The problem, though, is that the game was developed with the limitations of NTSC video in mind. The scanlines and overall muddiness were acknowledged and usually expected by developers (particularly the case regarding later games where those elements were deliberately manipulated). I guess it's ultimately a question of whether or not the clarity of the image is more important than recreating the precise manner in which it would have been displayed on release. And I don't mean that to sound dismissive at all: clarity may well be a more important factor, depending on the context.
Anyway, I won't revert the image because I really don't think it's my place to do so. Others who have actually spent more time over at the Metroid article are undoubtedly more qualified than I to judge. I only uploaded the replacement in the first place because I was working with the ROM image to grab a replacement screenshot of the image used in the Nintendo Entertainment System article, and figured I'd grab the JUSTIN BAILEY shot at the same time. It honestly didn't occur to me that anyone would object in the first place, or I'd have asked around first. My apologies. – Sean Daugherty (talk) 06:52, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Whoever vs whomever

Here we have a choice between "whoever" and "whomever". "Whomever" is the form used for an object -- but here, for the clause, we need a subject. "Whoever" is the nominative form, and so will function as a subject -- and the clause then reads "whoever painted it." Also, see the usage note for who. Fair use rationale for Image:SuperBowlXXXVIII.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:SuperBowlXXXVIII.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Image source problem with Image:SuperBowlXXXVII.png

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:SuperBowlXXXVII.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Orphaned non-free media (Image:New Animal Planet logo.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:New Animal Planet logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. PNG v JPG

Hi! I noticed the {{ShouldBeJPG}} tag added today to Quake III Arena q3dm0.png, and was just wondering why it was attached to that image. Is it just a preference for JPGs over PNGs? As a test, I ran a quick comparison on the image in question between the original PNG format and a copy saved in high-quality JPEG format, blowing up a section of it to more clearly see if any noise had crept in. The resulting image does show some noise/artifacts, particularly clear when screen brightness is increased. Huwmanbeing  20:25, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:BYSLogo.png

Thanks for uploading Image:BYSLogo.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

The following images also have this problem:

Help

Seeing your work on the image, Image:Isaac_Brawl.png, I have to say I am quite impressed. Could you possibly create a nice background for Image:SSBB Opening Sprites.png? It is in dire need of one. If you can, thanks a bunch. If you cannot, please tell me, as I need to find someone who can. Cheers! --haha169 (talk) 04:48, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, I wanted a nice backdrop for the image, since it looks really awkward like that. Do you have software that allows you to create appropriate vector images or cliparts? (see the very beginning of this video for an example of what I'd like it to be. If you can't, than thanks anyways. But please consider it - as you said it yourself: Authenticity would probably win. Thanks! --haha169 (talk) 23:04, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I'll see if spriter resource has anything; but I still think that a white background is a little lame. But you have a great point there. --haha169 (talk) 23:14, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Image request

Hey, could you give Image:Super-smash-bros-brawl-20060510074501608.png a transparent background? Its in PNG format, so there is no need to upload a new image. You did that to Image:Isaac Brawl.png previously, right? --haha169 (talk) 22:39, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

True. Thanks anyway. --haha169 (talk) 23:02, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Re: this edit summary; policy and arbcom decision have supported the removal of images which lack fair use rationale for a specific use. It's not a question of being hasty. If you want to add a non-free image to an article, add the rationale first then add it. Adding a rationale five hours after it is added to an article isn't the best way to go about handling this. You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Jeffrey Rowland (webcomics) to a different title - however your proposal is either incomplete or has been contested as being controversial. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved, to automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 19:05, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

brown recluse bites are not medically "provable"

It's simple enough. NO doctor can diagnose a brown recluse bite from its symptoms. Only an arachnologist, with the spider in hand, can confirm a bite. I'm betting that Mr. Rowland does NOT have the spider that bit him - meaning that while that may be a necrotic wound, the odds that it is from a brown recluse are about 100/1. Let's put it this way: unless the examining physician RULED OUT pyoderma gangrenosum, bacterial infections by Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, herpes, diabetic ulcer, fungal infections, chemical burns, toxicodendron dermatitis, squamous cell carcinoma, localized vasculitis, syphilis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, sporotrichosis, and Lyme disease (all of which are MORE COMMON sources of necrotic wounds), then there is no way that anyone can claim that was a recluse bite from its symptoms alone. When it comes to spider bite diagnoses in the absence of a spider, doctors are no more reliable sources than any other non-expert. Which is to say, they are not reliable at all. It's a shame, and it comes as a surprise to people (who doesn't want to trust their doctor implicitly?), but it is true. Dyanega (talk) 22:38, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Here's a chunk from the most recent paper on brown recluses [1]:

"“Spider bite” is an oddly comforting diagnosis for patients with skin lesions (Benoit & Suchard 2006). It becomes a badge of courage that they “survived” an encounter with a beast of perceived danger. People who feel they have suffered loxoscelism recount their stories for years, which are then retold by others (Vetter, unpubl. data); this is one of the mechanisms for reinforcing myths in the general public (Difonzo & Bordia 2006). In contrast, one rarely recounts to friends and colleagues a personal bout with a bacterial infection, especially long after the incident.

Patients often put blind faith in their physicians (Vetter, unpubl. data). If a physician diagnoses a brown recluse spider bite, this carries far more weight in the patient's eyes as to the probability of Loxosceles spiders in a local area than does the lifelong collecting experience of regional arachnologists (Vetter & Isbister 2008). Physicians knowingly work in an environment with accepted uncertainty (Montgomery 2006); however, patients feel that physicians work in a world of absolute knowledge."

There is a long and glorious history of doctors getting it wrong, but WP doesn't need to perpetuate it. Dyanega (talk) 01:23, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
