Monmouth

I've noticed that you have started creating new articles on Monmouth, which is excellent. If you need any advice on formatting articles, such as including citations from reliable sources - and creating wikilinks like that one - please let me know. There is a huge amount of guidance and policy in Wikipedia about how articles should be formatted and referenced, which like all of us I'm sure you will pick up over time. I am by no means one of the most experienced or expert editors here, but I may well be one of the most experienced in Monmouthshire (and, incidentally, am an officer of the Chepstow Society) - I'm happy to help. After tinkering a little with your article at Church of St Thomas a Becket, Monmouth, I've belatedly noticed that the text seems to be very largely taken wholesale from this site. I very strongly suggest that you (or someone - preferably not me!) rewrite the article, so that it no longer falls foul of Wikipedia's strict rules on copyright violation. (I haven't tagged it for copyright violation - if I had, it may well have been spotted and deleted on sight by now!) I suggest that you read WP:COPYPASTE ("In 99.9% of cases, you may not copy-paste text from other sources into Wikipedia (short quotations aside), because it would violate copyright and/or constitute plagiarism...."), and how to avoid it. Copying and pasting text is very commonly done by new editors - when I started I frequently did it myself - but it is heavily frowned upon, even when there might appear to be no problem over getting authorisation from the original author. I suggest that you have a go at rewriting the article in your own words. I'm happy to help and advise, and can only apologise if you find this message somewhat dispiriting! You have reverted to your version which (as well as being a clear copyright violation - which I've ignored) is mis-formatted, not well written in terms of Wikipedia's manual of style, and removes useful links. I am genuinely trying to help you here, and am in touch with John Cummings to see how best I can do that. Please do not revert the changes I have made without at least having the courtesy to discuss the matter - which is what I am trying to do with you here. I know you are a new editor here, but please (as someone who has been on this site a long time) consider whether you would benefit from learning some more about how Wikipedia works. I'm guessing you might be feeling as if we just want to nag at you. I think this is because we (like you) are very keep to see this Monmouth thing take off. I guess that because of our previous reputation we are paranoic (is that a word?) about copy and pasting. Even half a sentence can get pounced on.

The good news is that the ST Thomas the Martyr article that you started is going to appear on the front page in next 2 weeks or so. I'm hoping you will see that it has changed and what was done. Please perservere. It is worth it. I guarentee that 1,000 people will read your article in next month and it can be as high as 10,000 or even 30,000 if its exceptional. Thanks. Hi there. --Philbly (talk) 19:42, 14 December 2011 (UTC) I'm not sure what you're referring to re St Thomas's, since I haven't knowingly reverted to an earlier version or removed any links. Indeed, I'm happy with your improvements to it, and I see that it has moved to a Wiki page, while still remaining in the same format in my drafting box. It contains several references you've added, which is fine, though I haven't checked them since I assume you know what you're doing, and the gallery photos are fine. I'm still learning how to do some of this stuff for myself, though my original agreement with John was to place as much of the Blue Plaque Heritage Trail stuff in Wikipedia as seemed sensible, with the necessary added references and links, as a quick nucleus for the Monmouthpedia project. I'm not particularly interested in embellishing and perfecting them, since my understanding is that, once started, others (and yourself) will improve them. John has recently explained more about how things are done, hence this reply which I assume you will pick up. I intend to work my way through the blue plaque buildings, along with other Civic Society members, and maybe the Open Doors buildings. All the Heritage Trail text also exists in Welsh. We'll see how to get this in, but we can't edit it since none of us speaks Welsh. But John is looking at how best to proceed, since a Welsh nucleus will be important. Thanks for your help Phil

Hello Phil. I'm Guy Hamilton (aka Ghmyrtle). My comment about you reverting to an earlier version was based on this edit of yours - perhaps it was a mistake, but anyway the article has moved on from there, and is now looking more like a standard Wikipedia article. I have the Blue Plaque Trail booklet (in another capacity, by the way, I'm currently writing a similar booklet for the Chepstow Society), and I also have some other sources such as the "Buildings of Wales" book, and one of Keith Kissack's books on Monmouth, so I am happy to help out, add references and generally help turn articles into Wikipedia style. Regarding articles in Welsh, I assume that this project has been raised at Wicipedia Cymraeg, and that editors on that site will help with any translations. Phil - you need to look at WP:ICTIC, choose one of the license tags such as {{PD-self}} (if you're willing to give up all rights to the image, without attribution), and then add the template to the image page. I think that should work - but, as you see from that page, it's better (and easier) to upload photos to Wikimedia Commons and then copy them across, rather than uploading them directly to Wikipedia.
