Dubbo page[edit]

Hi Phil I noticed you have previously added to the Dubbo page. Can you have a look at the dubbo talk page and see the discussion there if you have time. I'm not sure whether to pursue this issue or let it drop. It's not that important, but feels a bit like I've been bullied. Wayne Connor 06:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Scottish Parliament building diagram[edit]

Hi Phil, I'd gladly convert to SVG if you let me know how - Photoshop doesn't seem to export to that extension. The PSD file has no vector information either - what's the advantage? I used Autocad to create the line content and then printed to file as a pdf and exported into photoshop where I added the colour and text. regards --Mcginnly | Natter 00:43, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Thanks![edit]

Just wanted to say "thanks" for the helpful edits to the solar car article I put up. I think that's the coolest thing about Wikipedia that people make contributions like that. All the best! FN 03:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)fnazeeri[reply]

Changing my user page[edit]

Please next time can you ask before changing anything on my (or anybody else's) talk page, as they may not want you to change it. I know people that have been sent this:

"Please do not edit the user pages of other contributors without their approval or consent, as you did with User:????. It may be seen as vandalism. If you would like to experiment, please visit the sandbox. --User:????".

Also, I did have the "st"/"nd"/"rd"s/"th" on the end of my dates for a reason, I HATE IT without them. And now I've got to do change all of the dates from this:

"20 January 2007" to this: "20th January 2007", which in my opinion you should have done.

As you are a Wikipedia admininstartor, you should know that you are only supposed to change someone's user page with their prior consent. (Of course, if it's vandalism it's okay, as long as you say clearly in the edit summary)

I don't mind what you did, but just next time - ask!

Thanks, -- Arriva436 17:08, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation needed.[edit]

I expect an explanation from you to come for removing my comments from someone else's user talk page. My comments were intended for Freakofnurture, not you, not anyone else. If you do not give me an explanation soon, I will revert you. I am not making false claims, I have IRC logs of what I am referring to, and even witnesses if you want, but I don't see the point as this is a private conversation with Freakofnurture who knows very well what I am referring to. If Freakofnurture has seen this message and asked you to revert it for him, do let me know. Otherwise, like I said, I will revert you.--KonstableSock 11:19, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Long ISBNs[edit]

Hi Phil, Really we need to monitor the booksources until we reach a critical level. However Wikipedia pressure or requests may actually convince some to change over. Also there is a little resistance (which I sympathaise with upto a point) to having other than the "printed" ISBN as the reference. The third problem is my disk with the scripts on is in a bit of bother at the moment. Rich Farmbrough, 17:02 23 January 2007 (GMT).
PS No reason not to use full ISBNs for any new entries. Rich Farmbrough, 10:40 24 January 2007 (GMT).

I have removed a contact template off of his user page. I notice that you used your admin powers to wipe away his previous contact template. Please review my edit to his userpage. Either revert my edit if you disagree with my removal, or wipe away his contact page again. You don't need to leave me a message in either case. Be advised that he is a younger teenager, and it is a child protection case. Cheers! Royalbroil T : C 04:56, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Hyperdrive main.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Hyperdrive main.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Yellow Submarine Improv Troupe (YSIT)[edit]

Would you please take a look at Yellow Submarine Improv Troupe (YSIT)? I am currently in a conflict with User:IrishGuy about this article. (Among others - he has been following me from article to article). In a nutshell: I removed a lot of uncited claims, unencyclopedic and/or vague language, and explanation of improv comedy. He says he disagrees with my removal of what he feels are claims to notability, but which I feel are uncited, vague references to people they hired to teach them. So he just reverts all of my edits, not just what he says he disagrees with.

As I said, this conflict has moved from article to article, as he reverts edits that I make to remove uncited material. Please, if I am doing anything wrong, tell me, but I really don't want to be in an edit war, and certainly not several of them. I am just trying to clean up all of the articles about non-notable comedy groups, and this one in particular has a lot of irrelevant or uncited claims. Thanks, Future Fun Jumper (TIC) 00:18, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infantry brigades[edit]

Also replied on your talk page:

Are you quite sure those are unique names? In general, I'd be very careful about applying that clause to extremely simple numerical designations (e.g. 36th Infantry Brigade, which, for example, has a name collision with at least one US unit by that name); while some of the highest-numbered ones may, indeed, be unique, it's a pretty safe bet that anything up to 100th Whatever has been used by some combination of US/Soviet/Chinese/German units.

(As an aside: isn't the unit's actual name the "12th Indian Infantry Brigade" rather than just the "12th Infantry Brigade"? I do know that many territorial units actually had the territory name in the unit name; is this not the case here?) Kirill Lokshin 21:15, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm cool with you reverting if you think it best. I have to admit that I am getting confused between situations like British 36th Infantry Brigade—where the unit is actually called "36th Infantry Brigade" and is British—and Indian 12th Infantry Brigade—which is actually called "12th Indian Infantry Brigade" and is also British—and Indian 2nd Infantry Division—which is actually called "2nd Infantry Division" and is Indian.
When I refer to "unique name", I'm referring strictly to within Wikipedia: I'm not dogmatic about there not being any others with the same numeric designation. In that case, the naming convention should come into play, as in the case of 2nd Infantry Division (India). I would also draw your attention to this which I think I did right but would appreciate a double-check.
HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 21:48, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, it's no big deal. A large number of editors wanted the simple numerically-designated units to be preemptively disambiguated (hence the inclusion of a recommendation to that effect in the guideline), so I would suggest not moving pages purely for the sake of getting rid of that disambiguation; but it's not really a major issue if limited numbers of them wind up needing an eventual move.
As far as the other issue, I agree that it's confusing to figure out what the unit's actual name is sometimes. I'm hoping that, in the long term, editors with more detailed knowledge of the units in question will catch any mistakes; so long as the overall scheme is more-or-less coherent, people will figure out the stranger cases.
40th Infantry Division looks good, incidentally. Thanks for setting it up. Kirill Lokshin 21:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You closed this as keep and said there were no valid reasons for delete given. But how does this not fail WP:NOT#Wikipedia is not a directory? Please explain how a 150K item list of numbers, dates and discoverers is anything other than a directory. Eluchil404 14:48, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's a primary source dump, which if anywhere belongs on Wikisource. But more pressing is the issue of possible copyvio, since it's a perfect 1:1 copy of a copyrighted website without established permission. Of course the question why we would want to mirror a perfectly well established and stable web source rather than just link to it in the relevant articles has also never been answered. ~ trialsanderrors 19:12, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't think that it's a copyvio since it's such a pure directory. If one can copy a telephone directory (and one can under Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service) then logically one can copy an asteroid directory. But the point is still reasonably well taken. This list is either a copyvio or a directory and doesn't belong on wikipedia in either case. Would a mass nom for all c.1600 articles be in order or should this one go to DRV first? "The Secret" film disambiguation[edit]

In reference to your edit, 09:40, 26 February 2007 at the page for the film "The Secret":

 • Wikipedia search for "The Secret" now finds "The Secret (2006 film)" and "The Secret (2007 film)".
 • I am unaware of a 2007 remake of the film and I note that there does not exist a page for such a remake.

"Intemperate closing remarks"[edit]

Nah, I think I did kinda screw up on that. No harm was intended, and as said at the project talk page, I don't think I actually did any. The new WikiWorld strikes me as a lot more useful than any of the old templates, and I've deployed it everywhere relevant. Still, I certainly didn't handle this properly, and apologize. I don't know why I was on such a tear that day. I think seeing a WikiProject tag in an article instead of on its talk page just set me off and made me turn purple. Stop messing up the category sorting[edit]

Please stop changing articles which were previously properly sorted in their categories, or those which were not, by adding improper sort keys such as the you added in this edit of Krisztián Sárneczky, where they were all previously properly indexed with the sort key "Sarneczky, Krisztian". See Wikipedia:Categorization if you need information on how these sort keys work; they may look like wikilinks, but they are something entirely different. Amy b. Jordan[edit]

Phil, would you please upgrade the article on dr. Jordan so it will survive AfD. See 1 and my comment there. It needs: dates of her degrees, previous positions, with dates, and details of her awards, and particularly, links or exact references to her video presentations, and a much fuller list of publications (not every conference, but certainly every peer reviewed paper in an inmportant journal). DGG 04:41, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated Amy B. Jordan (research investigator), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amy B. Jordan (research investigator) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. Phil, It's your belief that I am doing something wrong. Nobody has yet presented any evidence to refute the established consensus for LOEs. It's purely a subjective matter of opinion as to if they are copyright violations. My opinion is that they add a lot to articles and comply with the NFCC. Your opinion I expect is they do not and violate the NFCC, you are just as welcome to an opinion as any other editor. The matter in hand is do you have consensus for your "group's" actions? Personally I do not believe so. This requires a community discussion, not something at WP:AN. Have a good afternoon, Matthew 14:59, 1 May 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Tensors[edit]

I saw your post on Splash's talk. I hope you don't mind me jumping in. I can't speak for him, but for myself I tend to agree with that opinion. But, at the same time, I've found that the easiest way to get people interested is to simply create nice little templates which relate topics of relevance. It is incrementally the easiest thing to do that makes it apparent why a certain technical subject is relevant. It does not do the explaining of course, but its a first step towards unifying content on Wikipedia. As for tensors, what do you want to use them for? Sometimes, it's appropriate to consider the level of abstraction that is necessary for the application...Cheers! --HappyCamper 15:25, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New "source" tag[edit]

I noticed your recent AWB change to Singleton pattern, replacing the <code> tags with <source lang=...>. I'm happy that somebody finally got around to designing a tag to indicate the particular language used in a snippet of source code, but I'm extremely disappointed in the fruit-salad syntax coloring, especially since there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it — the coloring is different between different languages, and it's not obviously based on any prior art (Borland for Pascal/C/C++, Microsoft for C/C++/C#, the ACM or Knuth for Algol/Pascal,...).

I respectfully request that you not convert any more articles' source code until the problems with syntax coloring have been sorted out. In the meantime, could you tell me how you learned about the <source lang=...> tag? I don't see it mentioned anywhere obvious. Regarding the BDJ ArbCom case[edit]

You've misunderstood me completely. I was saying that dubious or wrong information about a living person should be removed immediately, especially if potentially libellous; that's what it says on Template:Blp which is used in all such articles, and that's what I understand the main purpose of BLP to be. If information is definitely accurate, verifiable and published in reliable sources (hence not "private" information), but still potentially harmful, then yes, we should take the harm factor into account in discussion - but it isn't a reason for immediate deletion. We have a legal responsibility to prevent false or defamatory information from being spread, and to remove it ASAP. That's a given. But whether we have an "ethical" responsibility to delete things that might hurt someone is a matter of opinion. For such articles, content removals should take place only with discussion, debate and consensus, because ethical principles are individual and subjective. Yes, we should take ethics into account; but it isn't acceptable to say "This article might hurt someone, it offends my ethical principles, so I'm going to use my admin tools to delete it. Try and stop me." WaltonAssistance! 18:27, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re your comments on the Workshop page, I was talking about details appearing in reliable sources. Certainly we shouldn't "out" a subject's private details from an attack forum or blog, just as we wouldn't with a Wikipedian. But, just as Wikipedians who are notable must face the fact that someone might dig up details on them from the press, so the subjects of our articles have to deal with the fact that the press might publish stuff on them, and that this content might end up in a Wikipedia article. Psychomanteum[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Psychomanteum, because another editor is suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add db-author to the top of the page.
