Mecca -- Makkah[edit]

Pepsidrinka, Makkah may be a better transliteration of the name of the city in Arabic, but Mecca is now the accepted English name. It is quite common for various languages to have different names for one city. The Brits call it London, the French call it Londres, etc. In this case, Mecca is so widely used and understood that using Makkah is just going to confuse readers. Please don't change the name in the articles you edit.

Otherwise, I appreciate many of the edits you're making. It's possible that we're not always going to see eye to eye <g>, but at the moment, any help in keeping articles truly NEUTRAL in Sunni-Shi'a disputes is appreciated. Zora 22:38, 19 December 2005 (UTC) (a non-Muslim -- a Buddhist, in fact)[reply]

Arabic transliteration[edit]

I agree that Wikipedia is extremely inconsistent in its use of transliterated Arabic. One of the problems, I gather from reading prefaces to scholarly works, is that there are several transliteration schemes in use. Another problem is that it takes some extra work to add all the necessary notation and a bunch of us lazy editors (like me) often don't bother. It could be argued that a great many Arabic names or words have been Anglicized, and that Muhammad, say, is now an English name and doesn't need to be marked up. Of course, maybe that's just laziness.

I wish I could help with this, but I'm at the state of intending to learn Arabic -- as soon as I can afford Rosetta Stone, for a start. Perhaps we should have a Project Arabic notice board (or some appropriate name -- it shouldn't assume that all Arabic speakers are Muslim, or speak the same dialect of colloquial Arabic) at which Arabic-speaking editors could gather, decide on one transliteration scheme to be used throughout Wikipedia, and then try to make sure that every Arabic name or term has, at least once in every article, a proper transliteration and a version in Arabic script. I'm not sure I would want to try to enforce it on every use of every word, but at least ONCE when it's used in an article would make sure that we're all talking about the same person or the same word, as well as helping Arabic-speakers for whom English is a second language. Your thoughts? Zora 01:18, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Editing the "Shi'a point of view" articles[edit]

Pepsidrinka, all those articles were created by Striver. Their status is unclear at the moment. A couple were put up for deletion, but kept -- it is HARD to delete anything on Wikipedia. However, a number of people, including some important admins, have said that POV forks (creating an article just so you can rant without anyone criticizing you) should not be allowed in Wikipedia. I'm ignoring the articles, since any work on them will lead to revert wars with Striver AND because improving them would make them more respectable and persuasive. If they're left as Striver wrote them, any intelligent person finding them is going to dismiss them.

Of course, I could be wrong. I often am :)

I fixed it since I can do move and delete. I'm not sure about the subject but it might be good to make sure others agree with your new naming. gren グレン 03:19, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Babel templates[edit]

Dear Pepsidrinka -- as an Arabic-speaker, you have a skill that is in short supply on the English-language Wikipedia. You might want to put up a Babel template on your user page. I've put up an example. Let's see, I think the source code you would want would be:

Dunno what other language you speak, and you may want to adjust the English and Arabic levels -- I'm guessing at your proficiencies and your background. Frex, if you're a native English speaker but your Arabic is only near-native, you'd put this:

If you increase the languages from 2, change the source code from Babel-2 to Babel-X, X being the number of languages you're going to list. Contact me if you need help. I'm an expert <g>, having finally figured it out. Zora 04:38, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS -- delete that Babel template once you've set up your own. By posting it, apparently I've enrolled you as a native English and Arabic speaker! Zora 04:40, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Abu Jahl[edit]

If there's an article on Abu Jahl, his contribution to the Battle of Badr should go there.

I understand that in later years it was so prestigious to have been at the Battle of Badr that many men claimed to have been there. Muhammad must have set out with a force numbering many many thousands to accomodate all the boasters <g>. Zora 01:56, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

We don't capitalize "prophet" in front of Muhammad[edit]

If we give Muhammad the title "Prophet Muhammad", it implies that Wikipedia recognizes him as a true prophet. We don't, because that would be POV. It has been a long-standing policy to remove all PBUHs and to decapitalize "prophet". In fact, I had somewhat of a struggle with a militant secularist over the use of the term prophet to refer to Muhammad. He thought that endorsed Muhammad and I argued that to use prophet without a cap just said that he held the role of prophet for his followers, which was not necessarily an endorsement.

Old argument, but let's try to keep it neutral. Zora 02:50, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Then someone has messed with the manual of style -- we discussed this matter at the Village Pump, on the policy page, and consensus was for the de-capped prophet. No one brought up the manual of style then, which suggests to me that this business wasn't there. If it was, it should be changed. Danged if I'll write "Prophet Muhammad". Zora 02:55, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Muslim editors want to capitalize Prophet, ignoring a consensus that has held for months. I don't see any non-Muslim editors but Tznkai (sp?) arguing for caps. If you insist on non-Muslim editors "honoring" Muhammad according to your strictures, you're just setting yourself up for a backlash.

I'll try raising this on the Village Pump again. Zora 00:00, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BC/AD, BCE/CE[edit]

Pepsidrinka, you're new, and you keep wandering into OLD controversies, and asserting your POV as if "Well, of course I'm right!" There are some people -- like me -- who feel that BCE/CE is more NPOV and better to use. I don't go round Wikipedia changing dates on random articles, but when I start an article, or do a major revision, I use BCE/CE. Usually non-Christian editors (like me) prefer that. I'm somewhat surprised that you feel so strongly about using BC/AD. In any case, this is a controversial issue on Wikipedia, with strong views on each side. We've had vicious revert wars and one editor, jguk, was sanctioned and left Wikipedia over this issue. The rule of thumb people use now is "whatever date scheme the creator of the article used OR what most of the repeat editors prefer". I wrote the Aisha article and prefer CE; I think most of the other editors would agree with me -- but I could be wrong. But are you sure you want to argue about this in the middle of the other battle, with the editors accusing Muhammad of being a pedophile? Resolve that one first and then we can argue AD/CE. CE[edit]

I saw you added CE to Battle of Yarmuk... I was wondering why? Typically if the date has no AD or CE it means common era... and it just brings us back into the God forsaken CE / AD debate... may I recommend not adding that to articles? (Unless you have a good reason in which case could you tell me... I thought it generally accepted to leave years alone). gren グレン 21:56, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't worry about undoing it... I just wouldn't do it anymore? It's not wrong... but, it's unnecessary since if it's linked it definitely goes to a common era date. It's also easier to me and since we don't have a set AD vs. CE policy per se... there's really no contention about neither. I suppose you probably didn't see some of the arguing about it. :) gren グレン 03:12, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dates[edit]

I think those dates are all useless. We don't have any in depth analysis of any day... because there never really has been a study of a day that I know of. I think they should be deleted, however, I think they need to go for AfD probably. Just to set precedent. gren グレン ? 19:52, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Events with the Sahaba[edit]

Why didn't I press to have these deleted? Because I was exhausted, that's why. It took Striver 5 minutes to create an article and everyone else days and weeks to get rid of it. Also, because my record with getting Striver's ridiculous articles deleted was only 50-50. There is a strong "inclusionist" tendency among certain repeat voters on AfDs. They want things kept; they seem to believe there's nothing that can't be salvaged with a little editorial attention. They're not prepared to GIVE it that attention, NO. That's up to the rest of us, working day and night to deal with the tide of cruft.

Jihad Watch/Dhimmi Watch[edit]

Legally I think that if that's our main conent it would be unwise to try it. If it was an important paragraph integrated into a larger article I think you have more legitimacy because it's not using their content as your sole content. I'd say it's a bad idea just for reasons of NPOV though. If our article is mainly their wording then that's not good. In a larger context of a well written article I think it could be justified. The way you said it led me to believe that you mean just copying paragraphs for conent. It may not be copyrighted but I tend to assume that everything is unless otherwise stated. It seems to be more safe that way and also forces us to write under our guidelines of NPOV which other sites dont have. gren グレン ? 20:32, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Question[edit]

Hi Pepsidrinka,

I added the following passage to the "Criticism of Islam" article part "Domestic violence" ( based on what I found in http://www.islamawareness.net/Wife/beating1.html.)

"Some other scholars argue that the Arabic word used in 4:34 is "idribuhunna" is derived from "daraba" which literally means "beat", or "go abroad", or "give" in the sense to give or provide an example. Thus the word "idribuhunna" could mean to "leave" them. They add that for example in the same chapter the word "darabtum", which is derived from the word "daraba", is used to mean to "go abroad"."

I am not good in arabic, but could you please check whether the logic makes sense or not. I am not confident.

It's probably not good to use an author who has a history of writing against. And as for the other language source, yes you can use it but add that it isn't in english. In wikipedia if english sources aren't found, foreign-language sources are acceptable in terms of verifiability, but subject to the same criteria as English-language sources. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 22:23, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If a source is given in another language it should be proven that if what it really says is true. If it is something like having to read the Qur'an in secondary schools then a english source about this probably won't be hard to find. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 22:34, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use images[edit]

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia. Fairuse images are best avoided as it defeats our primary goal of free content. Pakistan is a vast topic that can definately garner free images.

Fair use images should be used as a last option eg. if the pic is of a sensitive military area, and available to only the media. Secondly, many sites used wikipedia content. Since FU images are copyrighted, they would have to strip them off, again defeating the very purpose that they serve. Lastly, if free images are available, all previous FU/Non-commercial/non-derivative images will have to go.

I hope this was sufficient. If you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to ask. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:44, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

People usually have the impression of Pakistan being a backward country with no infrastructure at all. The image of Karachi is infact a testament to the economic development of Pakistan. Also, since a lot of people rely on Wikipedia for their first knowledge of Pakistan, it should represent all areas of the country. And since Karachi is THE largest and most important city of Pakistan, its a MUST that there should be a picture of Karachi on the Pakistan page. Swerveut

Hey Mr Pepsidrinka.. This is regarding the vote at Mosque Talk page and your comments about it.. I am new to wikipedia and my intention of putting the protected tag to the article was to "Protect it!!!" and nothing else.. And I dont think it was a wrong intention.. But I agree that I should've investigated a bit more and learnt that only sysops can protect a page. Removing Inuse from Seiyū[edit]

Why did you remove the tag? The article is collaboratively being worked on, and the last edit was today. That's hardly a stale tag. Please don't remove these tags without asking first. Thank you. --日本穣 02:58, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Under Construction[edit]

I am in the process of a multiple-day reconstruction of this article, and placed the appropriate template on it to so indicate. Why did you remove it when it was less than 48 hours since the last edit? Robert A.West (Talk) 02:09, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are confusing {{underconstruction}} with {{inuse}}. Given the template description, I would say that 72 hours is a lower bound for considering removing it. Certainly, 36 hours is too short. Robert A.West (Talk) 02:20, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I read the relevant talk page thoroughly before using the template, in no small part because I wanted to make sure I was selecting the correct template of the set. In this case, because I am expanding sections, I didn't want some other editor to look at something that is too short for a section and just compress it back while I was off checking sources, and this seemed to be within the intended use. You removed it after what I think is a too short a time for courtesy, so I let you know. As you put it, that is how wikis work. Happy editing! Robert A.West (Talk) 02:40, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, I have removed the {{underconstruction}} tag from Felony murder, as my schedule this week precluded finishing the edits I planned. I will return to it next week, I hope. I have left the tag on the talk page, where I hope it will not bother anyone. Robert A.West (Talk) 17:14, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Thank you for your stub submission. You may wish to note that it is preferable to use a stub template from Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types instead of using simply {{stub}}, if you can.

Nomination for Adminship[edit]

As promised, I am nominating you for adminship; you've deserved it. You have had a high number of edits and have contributed tirelessly throughout many articles and Wikipedia projects. I forsaked the startard nomination for adminship template because it was a little too corny for me. But it does have some important information.

Please visit Wikipedia:Requests for adminship to see what this process entails, and then contact me to accept or decline the nomination. A page has been created for your nomination at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Pepsidrinka. If you accept the nomination, you must formally state your acceptance and answer the questions on that page. Once you have answered the questions, you may post your nomination for discussion, or request that I do so.

Good luck on your request for adminship. Salaam. joturner 03:37, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're a sysop![edit]

Hi, Pepsidrinka/Archive 1, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Zora is succumbing to wikistress[edit]

I need help. I'm struggling on too many fronts.

At Zakir Naik, we have some devotees of Naik who want the article to be an advertisement for his teacher (or perhaps it's just one guy under various usernames). They're claiming that Naik has memorized the Qur'an, the Bible, the Mahabharata, the Talmud, claiming that Naik "won" a "famous" debate at a Chicago Islamic conference ... it's just me against a POV-warrior. I think he's making Islam look bad with all these ridiculous claims.

Then in Muhammad Cltfn or whatever his name is has totally trashed the sources section based on material he's getting from freerepublic.com. I've got a splitting headache and I'm in great danger of losing my temper badly.

If you can't help, please recruit some. Zora 04:57, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit-warring at Aisha?[edit]

Pepsidrinka, I've gotten myself involved in an arbcom case, Zmmz versus Aucaman Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Aucaman/Evidence. I offered evidence against Zmmz and he in turn accused me of a multitude of sins, among them edit warring. One of the articles in which I'm said to have edit-warred is Aisha -- and two of the arbitrators are crediting the charges. I know you also monitor that article and do a lot of reverting of PBUHing and charges that Muhammad was a pedophile. Could you explain to the arbitrators the situation at high-profile articles like Islam, Muhammad, Muslim, and Aisha, where it takes constant reversions to keep the articles in reasonable shape? I would appreciate it. If I'm blocked from editing Aisha, it's going to add to the load for the other editors. Zora 19:18, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

deletions[edit]

Apparently, you deleted articles I started without even bothering to check if they were legitimate. They are all nominees for a major award, and frankly I'm disappointed that you did not even take a few seconds to click on the link and make sure. See Wikipedia:Web_comics. They all easily fit the criteria for avoiding deletion. Tool. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Asler (talkcontribs)

Reason for 2005 NFL Draft color cahnge[edit]

The reason I continued to change the background colors to their original ones is due to the fact that every NFL Draft, as well as every draft in general, uses the default list colors. By changing this one, there will be many other draft lists that will also need to be changed to this. That being said, I still do not know why it was changed in the first place. --Wizardman 00:15, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good comment[edit]

Thanks for taking the time to comment on the Request for Arbitration. Your comment was very calm and balanced -- which is actually more believable than a post claiming that I was the best editor on WP would have been. That wouldn't have been true :) Zora 03:06, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

response to NFL Draft questions[edit]

Sure, You and I an fix up the draft pages. My apologies if I seemed a little angry earlier, as even I admit havign to change the other draft pages really isn't that big of a deal, and the colors actually do look better on the 2005 page. It would actually be interesting to see if all the NFL Draft pages could become featured lists. (though I doubt any early drafts could be FLC's due to a lot of rounds and a lack of info) --Wizardman 03:28, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rick Bruner[edit]

While I can see why this article probably isn't a good choice for a speedy delete, Wikipedia is not a soapbox and "Editors should avoid contributing to articles about themselves or subjects in which they are personally involved..."

So when I see user Rickbruner writing an article about Rick Bruner, I automatically get concerned. Should this article get a re-write from a neutral party? Should it still be put up for Proposed Delete? Llort 02:30, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your incredible incivility[edit]

That was, without a doubt, one of the most rude messages I've ever recieved here on Wikipedia. Firstly, the picture of the president was NOT under copyright- it was a press photo that was released into the public domain for the express purpose of public dissemination. Secondly, given that Wiki has free use of that picture, we DO have the right to crop it in order for it to fit the profile of our particular usage. You have neither proven a good rationale for your deletion, nor have you attempted any civility in this matter. As such, I am restoring the pictures that you have deleted, and I will continue to restore them without hesitation. Your rudeness (not to mention deleting something you had no right to delete in the first place, especially without prior discussion) is noted. Never Cry Wolf 06:49, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I still don't agree with you at all, but it doesn't matter. There's a better fair use image of Mahmoud on there, so the discussion is moot. Never Cry Wolf 10:41, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IranPix.com pictures[edit]

Thanks for deleting those pictures. I would have deleted them myself, but since I had a conflict of interest with the user, I just put them on speedy-row and let another admin delete them. I see you put a couple of pictures on that copyright watch page (don't feel like looking for the exact page). The user also has many more pictures from IranPix.com uploaded. Some of them have "exclusive use by him" liscenses, though every picture from IranPix.com is non-commercial and are still I3. Mind taking a look through his contribution list sorted by Images. Most of the iranpix have iranpix in the summary. Pepsidrinka 17:00, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's quite a problem! I only speedily deleted images in which he stated licensing was exclusively "non-commercial". Unfortunately, copyright violation of images cannot be speedied (and indeed, since he's claiming an "exclusive" license, it's just possible that the photographer gave him a different license under which photos may be uploaded here, to that which he gave IranPIX). I have been through all his uploads and deleted all those licensed non-commercially. The remainder will need listing as copyright violations (and can be deleted in due course...). Some of them are lacking source info in any case and may thus be speedily deleted in 7 days if not updated. I will have a look through to try and list the other copyright violations if I get a chance at some point, but am a bit busy right now... UkPaolo/talk 17:17, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mahan image[edit]

Business one:

We've had this discussion with admins before. Some agree, others (like GMaxwell) dont:

The 1922 PD law does not apply to Iran, because according to the US Copyright Office, the US has no copyright treaties with Iran. [5] That is why Iran officially illegally distributes all American software and intellectual products.

The image is a government image; it has no intellectual proprieter.

But the again, what can I say, the decision is yours.--Zereshk 17:24, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Business 2:

I suaully dont report people because it's below my level. But this one irks me real bad:

User:Timothy Usher is calling me an "anti-semitic" just because I provided American and Israeli sources stating that Israel supported Iran in the war against Iraq. I think that's a clear attempt of abusing WP laws.

Thanx.--Zereshk 17:24, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks pep: [6]. Moshe and Pecher (who have followed me around to the same page ever since they encountered me on Talk:Persian Jews are also itching to get into a conflict with me. Notice Moshe's remarks to me elsewhere: He keeps using ad hominems: [7]
What have I done to these people but minding my own business?
Thanx again.--Zereshk 17:43, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Foreign language prods[edit]

You left the comment on ترجمة: don't PROD foreign language artices.

Ignoring the fact that someone speedy deleted this article while I was AfDing it, the fact remains that sub-stubs aren't terribly useful to Wikipedia in any language. If the original author had written more fully on the topic, then it might be worth translating, but there is no benefit to Wikipedia in keeping foreign sub-stubs.

If the article had been any longer than a few words, I certainly would have left it alone with the translate tag. However, as it was it just wasn't worth cluttering the translation queue. -Harmil 18:42, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Again, you seem to be focusing on the translation aspect. The article was a few words long. This is what is generally refered to as a "sub-stub", and such articles are often given a {{prod}} tag when they are in english. If someone feels that such an article merits an entry, it can always be expanded within the time period allocated to prod-tagging. Hope this helps clear things up, and happy editing! -Harmil 18:59, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More Hadith Templates[edit]

I created all these templates. If you want a shorter version of the Bukhari template use Template:Bukhari-usc created by Timothy. If there are issues please feel free to fix them and remember to put a note on the talk page thanks «₪Mÿš†íc₪» 09:16, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Islamic scripture template news[edit]

1) Template:Quran-usc has been altered in two respects:

a) it’s no longer required to input three digits - this is automated thanks to joturner.
b) the template no longer includes “Qur’an” in the bluelighted display. Editor may choose to write it or not (or “Sura”, or “verse”, etc.) according to context.
c) thus the “-num” variants are redundant and should not be used.

2) The “range display” problem is still not solved - more information coming soon.

3) Template:Bukhari-usc is operative, with three variables (volume, book, hadith), and automated tridigitation as per Quran-usc.

4) Template:Quran-usc-num, Template:Quran-usc-numrange and Template:Buhari are defunct and should be deleted.Timothy Usher 10:07, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
