My First Edit[edit]

I was reading Jimmy Wales' user page on my mobile phone and thought it odd that his email address wasn't included where it said that you could email Jimmy Wales if you needed to contact him. I eventually found it at the bottom of the page. On my computer it was visible on the same screen without the need to scroll but as this wasn't the case when viewing on my phone I decided to edit the page. I hope that is OK Paul Bates 1973 (talk) 23:43, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Paul, I see you already got the obligatory welcome template - so I'll just add my "Welcome" here. I saw your post to Jimbo's talk page, and it makes sense to me. (putting a link at first mention). Also I'll add my "sorry" here too as it seems several folks got a bit uppity with you there. Depending on the areas you edit Wikipedia can be a very enjoyable place - it can also be a very hostile and unforgiving environment in some areas as well. I hope the places you find are the former. Anyway - Jimbo's talk page is likely one of the most watchlisted pages we have here, so it's going to attract a lot of attention any time someone either edits his page, or posts on his talk. For the most part I tend to think of each users page as their own in most respects, and figure it should be how they themselves want it to look. (so long as it's not violating any of our policies and such). If I had to guess though, I wouldn't be surprised if Jimbo didn't really care one way or the other. I think that perhaps because Jimbo is one of the founders of Wikipedia (or the founder depending on your point of view.) then some folks tend to be very protective of his pages. Although he makes it clear that he doesn't "own" them, and encourages anyone who is able to edit things to make this a better site. I could speculate on the why as far as people being protective of his user page, but I'm sure the reasons vary from one individual to another. Anyway, my best wishes to you in all you do here, and if there's anything I can help with then feel free to drop by my talk any time. Cheers. — Ched :  ?  00:15, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Ched

In response[edit]

Hello. It looks like your early edits have been reverted or redirected. Please don't let that discourage you! It takes a while to get the hang of editing Wikipedia, and it's totally normal for people to have their first edits reverted. It happens to everyone in the beginning, and I hope you stick around long enough to get past the bumpy early days. Welcome, and good luck! ```Buster Seven Talk 13:28, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jimbo has put a hat over it but I have commented at his talk page about your failure to mention my outreach to you. Jumping right to the Founders page with your first dozen edits seems to signify not a newbie but someone that knows their way around the place. Also, you said "feel free" to comment and then get in a snit when fellow editors comment. All in all, I'm sorry I got involved. ```Buster Seven Talk 17:45, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Events[edit]

Hey! So I saw your posts on Jimbo's talk page and for the record, I'm *really* impressed that you were willing to do something so bold - not to mention something that was patently intelligent. I know you may be frustrated with the community already, but I think you should give us a 2nd chance. If you have questions or want help with something, please feel free to post on my talk page! It's good to see new people around here. Keilana|Parlez ici 00:03, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Keilana, I just wanted to participate, I didn't know if my change would be accepted or not, but I wanted to have a discussion about it. I still want to be a editor, but if every edit results in this sort of encounter with other editors I am not sure if it will be worth it, there are many other good causes I could give my free time to

Paul, it is unfortunate that you were treated this way. Let me know if I can be of any help. Viriditas (talk) 07:40, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree thoroughly. There *are* people around here who will jump down your throat for the littlest thing, but I've found the vast majority of people to be kind and helpful. Keilana|Parlez ici 14:26, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just human nature. I am sure I do not have to tell you that. And if you have any forum experience at all, you already know that a thick skin goes a long way. Coat the thick skin with Teflon and you are golden. Have fun editing. --Lyncs (talk) 00:08, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome To Wikipedia[edit]

I saw the discussion regarding your edit of Jimbo's user page while reading another discussion on his User:Talk page and wanted to welcome you to the Wikipedia community. As a fairly new editor myself I know how it feels to make an edit only to have it reverted or deleted, the page that I significantly rewrote as a brand new editor was deleted within two weeks. I just wanted to praise you for your willingness to make bold edits even as a brand new editor. I truley hope that you do not let this keep you from making more contributions here on Wikipedia. If you ever have a question feel free to post on my talk page and I will try to answer it.Andrew Kurish (talk) 01:17, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
