Balanced Ternary money system

There seems to be some confusion on the Ternary page.
Here is my understanding of a balanced ternary monetary system. In balanced ternary, you have digits that represent postive number, and digits that represent negative numbers. For example, 5 is represented "+--": 9 - 3 - 1. To represent five dollars in a balanced ternary system, one would have a nine dollar bill, a negative three dollar bill, and a negative one dollar bill. It's not balanced ternary unless we have some way of representing negative amounts. Well, if I had five dollars from having a positive nine dollar bill, and two negative bills, well I would just throw out the two negative bills and have nine dollars!
So, yes, either I'm hopelessly confused about this, or we will need to keep the above sentence in the article. Please clarify if I am mistaken somehow. Samboy 14:09, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

- Well thank you for letting me know. Wikiproject_Drugs has a policy on the naming of drug pages and "common spelling here in the US" is not part of the policy. I posted on the amphetamine talk page that I was going to move the page, with a pointer to the project page, so that anyone who disagreed could raise any objections. Blocking
Recently, you blocked me for a period in excess of 24 hours, for breaching the three revert rule. I concede that it appears that I did breach this rule.
You asserted that I had been warned about breaching the rule and that I ignored the warning. You further asserted that I was a long-time user. Neither of these assertions is true.
Given the political orientation you profess on your user page, I am concerned that you did not exercise your authority correctly.
I would like to inquire as to the following:
- How did you become aware of the breach of the rule?
- Have you ever blocked someone before without warning them?
- What interaction do you have with those editing the Soviet Union or Russian articles?
- Why did you block me for a period in excess of 24 hours?
Please respond promptly.
Warning
I was certainly not warned until after the changes were made. Check the timing. Once warned, I made no further changes. While no excuse, I was not aware of the rule and was certainly not told about it until it was too late. It is my responsibility to read the rules, of course.
However, I am told on IRC under the Blocking policy it is customary to warn "vandals" twice.
No one even suggested I was vandalizing anything. Far from it, I was making an entirely sensible change to an article, which some on your side of politics seemed not to like.
Again, I ask you whether you have ever blocked someone without warning them? Presumably the process of warning involves 1) warning 2) an opportunity to comply with the rule or persist in breaching it and 3) penalty. You exercised your authority quite wrongly in that context.
I also ask whether you review your 24 hour blocks or whether you rely on them to automatically expire when the system for that seems not to work. I sent you an email about this and received no reply. This excessive penalty compounds your original error.
172 is in breach of the orders of the ArbCom, please let me know if you wish to know more and would consider blocking him. Libertas

On a tangent, I notice that SHA family lists the alleged SHA-1 break, which has yet to be published or receive formal review (Schneier notes in his blog only that the paper "looks good" and has reputable authors). Do you think we should make it more obvious that this is an unconfirmed result? Also, what algorithms have little in common with the SHA family and aren't already broken, in the event that this is an issue? Scneier says that SHA-1 is now broken as a hash function for signatures, but breaking signatures involves finding a collision with one of the few possible hashes that have been signed, not finding a collision on any hash - am I missing something here? - Yes, I think you're right: it would be good working practice to make clear that the result is only "hearsay" at this point, and hasn't even been made public yet. (I think Adi Shamir also mentioned the break, and this team is reputable, so it's unlikely Schneier's wrong). I've heard people suggest Whirlpool (hash) as a replacement algorithm that doesn't use the MD-x/SHA-y/RIPEMD-z structure. There is a reasonable concern that you can use collisions in nasty ways with digital signatures: if you create a collision X and Y, H(X)=H(Y), and convince someone to sign X, then you've forged a signature for Y as well. Of course, in practice X and Y would have to take on a certain form for this to be of any practical benefit to an attacker — but that would very much depend on the specifics of the collison-finding method. (And the attack that you can do with the brute-force method that's listed on Birthday attack might not be possible.) Re: grad school — cool! - Yeah; my hunch is that we're a long way off from having any interesting practical attacks made possible by the recent hash function breaks. But, of course, migrating to better primitives is still very prudent — better to be conservative about security. Re: RIT -- would it be research or taught-course? Myself, I'm part way through a PhD (in cryptography) at the University of York, but it's going a lot slower than I'd hoped. - It's a, well, transliteration, though I don't see how it can be better done. 自由王国 is literally correct, but the "kingdom" takes on a children's storybook connotation of "kingdom" when read. Dividend tax
You probably hear about dilution most often with mergers where stock is swapped rather than new stock issues, of course with new stock issues control is always being diluted unless it is existing stockholder that purchase the stock. There is often a price drop in mergers, because generally a premium is being paid over what was the market price of the company being acquired. However, the executives and those stock holders that retain their shares generally agree that the stock is worth more because of some synergies or cost savings that will result because of the merger. Dilution is sometimes viewed by the market as an issue, however, I don't this necessarily being a topic for the Dividend tax article. Best wishes. --Silverback 18:36, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Tolls are inefficient?
I saw your change on the Tax article, and thought you might want to reconsider. As a libertarian, I'm sure you've heard of the Cato Institute. One of their recent policy analysis had to do with the Federal Gasoline Tax. They concluded that a toll was a far better solution than the current system for paying for highways. Version six-three tracks who made the edits, and rankings are available. Much of the work was done while I was asleep, explaining my low place ;).
The next project, which may even be released today, will probably fix incorrectly capitalised headings, particularly "See Also" and "External Links".
The mailing list has grown to 24 people and while that is very nice for my ego, it is rather difficult to send out updates. The article on Ayn Rand/Objectivism seems to have been written by people who are attached to her ideas - who else would even think of her except as an author, and a rather interesting one at that? But she was an egomaniac and wanted everyone to act the same way. Push, push, knock anyone else out of the way, scorn the poorly educated as they are lazy, scorn the poor as they must be lazy, scorn the liberals who try to help the poor - feeding beggars (even if they are children, I'd suppose) encourages more begging and less work. Scorn architects following classical lines (I agree they can be a bore, but does everybody need a Saarinen or I.M. Pei. ?) Anyway, if you can balance the article so as to be more neutral - go for it. A viewpoint that is worth considering is that Ayn Rand, an escapee from under the Communist heel of oppression, like Edward Teller, lost her ability to deal with different philosophies or viewpoints equitably. - As the symbolic "no secrets in Scouting guy" on the article, I would like to thank you for your compromise on the safeguarding issue. For your information, the BSA has already released the four tests into the public through the National Fact Sheet (as I stated previous in the talk space) and I thought it was pretty much a bad idea to slap a spoiler warning box into the article for the main reason that the real juicy part of the Ordeal is not the tests themselves, but the learned lessons. Sleeping out under the stars was totally different for me than it was for you, and that's the real meaning I put behind my flap and sash, not the fact that I slept out alone, didn't eat a lot, didn't talk, and helped my camp out. Nathan, I have created a new project page at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard, and Secretondon suggested that I tell my fellow bureaucrats about it. It's designed as a forum where users with bureaucrat rights can discuss difficult situations, either beforehand (for advice about what to do) or after taking action (for review and feedback). It's similar to another page I created, which is starting to catch on (e.g., Jimbo used it this month): Wikipedia:account suspensions, which is not for 3RR or simple vandalism but for close calls and disputed blocks.

Nigel Short
You claim in your edit of Nigel Short that the words "the youngest GM in the world at that time" semi-imply that he (me, in fact) was the youngest ever. It does nothing of the sort. That interpretation is for the dull-witted or intellectually lazy. All your edit has done is to remove a not unimportant piece of information. There are a large number of teenage grandmasters these days but there were very few during the 1980s. Not everyone is aware of this, and for those who do not know you have simply downgraded my achievement.

Mutual funds and Wikibooks
Hi Pakaran. I saw your note on Jimbo's page. Note that investment advice might or might not be acceptable on wikibooks: the info itself would probably have to find an existing book, as something not even a page long is not a book (or, a larger book could be started that would include that in a section, but it's a bad idea to start books that don't have people interested in writing the rest of them). I'm willing to bet a proper Image tag could be added and all would be fine, but that's hard to do when the file has been deleted. Someone may just re-upload the same image anyway. For a page that is part of a major project like Star Trek it might have been more sporting to drop a message on the Discussion page rather than doing a speedy. - I guess my issue with this is that I wasn't aware this image was in danger of being deleted (I assume that it did go through the Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images process, correct?). Had a note been dropped onto the discussion page, I or someone else might have been able to rectify the situation as I have that article on my watchlist. (PS. I did not upload that particular image, so I have no idea what it was. Most likely it was either a screenshot or a promotional image, both of which are kosher under Free Use; all it needed was the proper image tag notation.) I personally don't spend time looking at Jimbo's personal page; he should add this latest instruction to the front page or do some sort of blanket PM about it. Now I need to track down the original again (hopefully, might be impossible), as when my laptop's hard drive crashed, it went poof. I realize it sounds far-fetched when you read it, but I would never report something for fact on dubious authority. The BBC World Service is without a doubt the most credible journalistic source in the business- it's the only one I never found in error (not counting futlities such as the pronunciation of a name in my native Dutch) in decades of critical listening. So if they report something without reserve, and even include it in the weekly digest "Pick of the Week", I take it, though I have no access to their documentation, that the burden of proof is on the other side. Surely every self-respecting government knows what the BBC broadcasts, so if it had been an utter lie there should have been a denial, which probably would have stirred a scandal, especially now the Blair-Bush axis is accentuated by the Iraqi 'peace front'. If yoy know of a denial, I'ld be happy to include that; you will see that I nevertheless chose the cautious phrasing "widely reported", leaving room for doubt which I personally don't see room for. I'm afraid we can't wait till it makes the history books.
As for the freshmen: organizations haze those that are initiated in their circle, regardless which academical year they are in, so it is impossible to haze but not freshmen in that sense- so I change the word freshman to initiant to clear that one up Fastifex 20:52, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

A major problem with Wikipedia is the people who believe in ESP, PK etc fill the pages with their POV, people who adore Ayn Rand's works overfill the pages of Objectivism and watch like hawks for changes, people who believe that the Earth is young and the story of Noah's Ark is literal truth fill pages with strawman arguments against themselves which they then demolish with their arguments, and they, too, watch like hawks for changes, and so on. The Noah's Ark story is important allegory and may have deeper meanings. It is also part of the Judeo-Christian tradition. But if you want to take it as the literal truth, then it makes no sense to conjure up "scientific" objections and then shoot them down. To do so is mucho POV. If you believe that the number 88, for example is a lucky number - OK. But if you then come up with objections against beliefs in lucky numbers, and fill up Wikipedia with these concocted objections and your own "scientific" rationalizations as to why 88 is "lucky" - nuts to you, as McAuliffe once said. Hi,
Re the IP block, the user in question is suspected of being a particular troll who under an arbcom ruling is automatically blocked indefinitely for posting such comments. (They have been blocked indefinitely at a variety of IPs and usernics already.) As to their comments, they have left themselves open to criminal prosecution. If any one of the millions of users visiting WP sees that edit in the edit history of the article in question they could report it to the police. Indeed in many jurisdictions where mandatory reporting exists, the mere suspicion that someone may be a child abuser due to their comments would produce a legal requirement that someone finding that comment would have to report it to the police and the police would have to investigate it. The identity of the user making the claim would then be traced (as can be done relatively easily in most cases) and then the complaint passed on from whichever jurisdiction the report was made in by police forces to the local force of the person who made the comment. There is as a result a strong possibility that at best the person who made that claim in the edit summary could have a visit from the police. There is a possibility that a criminal investigation may be opened against them. Even if there is no evidence that their claim is true, posting it would be an instantly sackable offence in most jobs if a work computer was used, and would earn instant expulsion if posted from a school computer. It is quite a serious matter, far more so than was actually conveyed by the message. (A lawyer friend to whom I described the edit earlier reckoned that it if reported to the police the comment, even if as is likely to be the case merely a joke, could get the poster into massive legal hotwater. Given the nature of the comment an indefinite ban was the only option, not least to protect WP both from possible media attack and from any of the legal complexities that could arise from such a claim. As mentioned, comments implying criminal behaviour by the poster or anyone else in an edit summary have generated an automatic instant indefinitive ban.) FearÉIREANN

While WP:FU does indeed indicate that fair-use images shouldn't be on user pages, it does not specify what kind of action to be taken in this case. While we're quoting policy, I do believe it's frowned upon to edit a protected page, especially if you're involved in the dispute. Request For Protection Until Dispute Resolved
Hi, i want to know if its possible to protect the Gothic Metal article. A while back i performed a revision of the page after a near 2 month dispute on the articles contents. After intense discussion and several revisions of the talk page on the since deleted temp article, one of the users has proceeded to start vandalising pages ive edited. This user is DanteInferno. This user was involved in the debate in opposition to the revision i wished to make, which was made due to consensus being reached on the revision and the argument being abandonded against it being posted. Since the users return he has demanded that i am vandalising pages, and has claimed me of using sock puppets to make edits to pages, and has claimed several users dislike me and refuse to work with me. Both of these claims are unsourced. Dante also seems to exhibit Meglomanical Point of View, reverting any edits made to pages listed on his user page, on the basis he 'owns' the articles. I do not know clearly how to deal with this user, and i have posted this message to several admins as i wish to ask advice from several admins i have had no previous contact with, as i do not wish to seem biased. I hope that the page can be protected against this vandalism, as it is disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point, which along with the users other actions against me, is in violationg of several Wikipedia policys. Thank you for your kind consideration and reply. I did see that you were listed as an AMA member on one place (your userid was the only visited link of the membership) where it said, "just ask." But I also saw that you were not listed on the page where AMA members indicate their willingness to accept new clients. So I understand completely if any or all of this isn't feasible.
My most important hopes are that you (or another advocate -- any recommendations?) might be able to make sure I get all the questions posed if I am off-line while the moderator is on-line, because over the next few weeks I'm probably going to have to put in 100 hours for a new client, which means my wikiparticipation will plummet until the end of January. And that if I am slow in responding you/my advocate can calm the moderator to prevent any railroading or the like.
Further, you/my advocate are most welcome to get as far in to the technical details as you like. I can offer you my best-guess cache of on-line research as follows. I predict these will be the most important sources in the mediation that I already have on line:
- First U.S. military proof of the method and magnitude of chemical toxicity[3], [4] (compare to [5] showing uranium ten times worse than plutonium);
- Proof the U.S. military didn't look for uranium trioxide gas (a/k/a UO3(g) a/k/a uranyl oxide gas)[6] (search for "75 percent"; observe only particulate measurements);
- The 2000-era vet birth defect stats[7];
- Evidence of uranyl ion near DU munitions fires[8];
- Health Physics Society's study of particulate (non-gas) dispersion patterns[9];
- Asaf Durakovich's review of uranium toxicity[10]; and perhaps
- see also my open directory[11] for more.
There are a few essential papers that I only have on hardcopy right now, especially the 1960 Ackerman paper which you may have seen in the most recent talk page archive, with its citation search of seven supporting subsequent papers. I can make all my hardcopy available if need be, but I'm not going to scan them all in until I know which in particular are needed.
Do you think you can make sure that I get a fair chance to respond to questions from the mediator, to let him or her know that I'm not around if I'm not around, and I'm not trying to ignore or delay him or her?
Anything more would be icing on the cake, but if you want to, the above should get you ready.
If you can't or don't want to do this, would you please recommend someone?

An Esperanzial note
As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. I am seeking your guidance and advice on a particular issue. Mahuri page on wikipedia was initiated by me, and I have contributed to the page from time to time. As per policy of the wikipedia anyone can use the contents of wikipedia, but I understand that use of such contents should indicate the source, that is, the wikipedia. The contents of the page Mahuri have been used in the site mahurivaisya without giving any reference to wikipedia - though I am glad that they have used our contents. In this case, a problem may arise at a future date if that website takes a stand that the contents of page Mahuri on wikipedia have been copied from that site and thus violates copyrights. In an alternative scenario, a user here may tag our Mahuri page with copyright violation under the impression that our contents have been copied from that site, reference to which was given by me long back as an external link when that site was not active and having only a welcome page. Although I am not aware of any such issue, which wikipedians may have encountered in the past, I believe that such a situation may have arisen earlier too. Can you help me with User:Nandesuka?
Greetings; thanks again for your help months ago with Depleted uranium. I once again find myself in a situation where I have a whole lot of work to do, and not a lot of time to devote to Wikipedia. Hoever, the content disputes have, more-or-less, gone favorably for me, with DV8 2XL placing some of the disputed content from Uranium trioxide into the Uranium article, although there are still some questions about whether he was acting in good faith.
However, at this point I am having some serious problems with User:Nandesuka, who has, as a non-party, asked for an injunction against me in arbitration because he didn't like the fact that I insisted on (1) keeping the discussions in chronological order, and (2) compiled a Table of authorities so that the arbitrators could easily compare the quality of the sources I am using with those of my opponents in arbitration.
Yesterday, he blocked me of 3RR for what I believe was simple reversion of vandalism. Please see User talk:Nrcprm2026#Blocked for revert warring on Uranium trioxide.
I don't want to ask for Nandesuka's joinder to arbitration, because that would just complicate things for the arb com. However, if Nandesuka believes that his behavior has been correct, then I will.
Would you please ask him, as a third party, what he thinks about his actions?

A short Esperanzial update
As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.
As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Mix CD in Linux
What's a good Linux program to make a mix CD from tracks that exist on other CDs I have, ideally with no loss of quality and playable in a normal CD player? I use gentoo, any common program is probably available. Thanks. -- Pakaran 00:58, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Templates on WP:CHU
Hi Pakaran. On WP:CHU, we have been requested to use the templates {{done}} and {{not done}} when we grant or deny a request, so that VoABot can archive those accordingly (it recognizes the templates). Cheers, Redux 20:02, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again. You're welcome. I guess we could add it to BUR, but we'd have to stay on top of it, since those circumstances can change quickly -- I mean, not a month ago it was a different bot doing the archiving (EssjayBot II), which used to cross-reference our signatures and the timestamp, achiving everything that was 48 hours old. In the not-so-distant future, a different bot might require a different procedure -- I don't mind, it beats having to do the archiving ourselves. ;)
Speaking of news, here's one that I don't know if you've seen: soon we will have no more email addresses to rename. The software has been modified not to accept names containing the "@" symbol. It just happened 2 days ago, so we'll have to rename the accounts created until then, but that should be the end of that. Cheers, Redux 22:14, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

First issue: Context. Who I am. Just a selection of pages created by me:

I would like to known if this page I created is "Wikipedia kosher"...or not. I left the page unlinked because "they" (some spanish wikipedians and admins) are starting to groan about it in es:Wikipedia [12].
I would like also to know if the "Brandemburg gate" joke in the history of my user page [13] is also "Wikipedia kosher" or not. I had been blocked in the es:Wikipedia for three days due to that page, and now I want to be very (very) cautious about my next actions.
Now I am blocked for a week in es:Wikipedia because a commie admin (he has a KGB shield in his user page) blocked me ([14] 23:36 3 dic 2006) for changing my userpage in es:Wikipedia and for "retiro de comentarios ajenos".
- I did not change my userpage, the I.P. that made it is in Chile. I am logged in Spain. The accusation against me of changing my user page unlogged is untenable.
- I retired nothing, I moved a picture added in the middle of my intervention [15].
It´s a totally incorrect blocking, and, I dare to say, a bad faith one. I emailed the admin with the details and, so far, zippo.
Please read the contents in this page. I am not the only author, nor I am the first "exiled". Other spanish speaking guys who choose to put the "exiled" userbox are linked in this page.
To sum up: The Wikipedia in spanish is an unholy mess, Pakaran. Hard-working people is kicked in the butt on a daily basis,and is no surprise that the spanish version is in the last position among major languages Wikipedias [16]. I could provide you dozens of examples. There is a core of sectarian (lefties) admins breaking havoc there. For instance, they want to remove the fact that Jimbo likes Ayn Rand [17]. It is a sourced statement, and this guy, Varano, is about to be elected as admin w:es:Wikipedia:Candidaturas a bibliotecario/Varano, even as he is talking about strangling people:
- Es una de las ventajas de las relaciones o el trabajo por internet, que te permiten tomarte un minuto o dos antes de contestar a cualquier locura. De estar cara a cara supongo que ya habría estrangulado a alguno ;).Last sentence
I would like to know what do you think about these issues, because if this is the aceppted way to treat an user like me in this place, this is not a proper place for me.
If the owners or admins of Wikipedia do not care, I do not care neither.
In that case, I am about to stop any Wikipedia activity (rv vandals, voting, creation of new articles, wikicommons work categorizing , uploading of images...the whole lot) save the most basic, barebones, maintenance work and few improvements in a handful of carefully selected articles, i.e., my "core" articles.
If this is not the accepted way, please tell me what´s the next step.
