Unknown Private Eye Edit

Hello, I received a message from you, some kind of warning about an edit to Private Eye and the addition of "nonsense" to the article. I have no recollection of editing any articles recently. I am unsure as to whether I may have a shared IP Address as my internet access is currently in student halls of residence, so this might be the case. Streaker Revert

Please delete this page

Question About Vandalism Report.

I was given a vandalism warning regarding the "Recurring South Park characters" page. I am not sure this is the correct place to explain my change, and if is not, please let me know. In the Timmy portion is says "He can usually only say his own name, a garbled line that sounds like "tim-eye", Timmy's name, and Gobbles...". I changed it to "He can usually only say his own name, a garbled line that sounds like "tim-eye", Jimmy's name, and Gobbles..." I changed this because the fact he could say his own name was already mentioned and I know he has said Jimmy's name before. I really don't want to be put on the vandalism list. I love Wikipedia and really want this change made since I believe it is really a typo. --132.170.100.91 14:28, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi there 132.170.100.91. First of all, if you're serious about Wikipedia, I'd strongly suggest creating an account rather than the anonymous 132.170.100.91 address. People with proper accounts appear to get more respect to their edits, probably due to most vandals being anonymous. Further, there was no edit summary explaining why the change, another possible sign of vandalism. I'd reverted your edit as it appeared to be vandalism, particularly as earlier in the paragraph (and later in the article) the name was referred to as Timmy. Switching the name around between Timmy and Jimmy doesn't appear to make much sense. Best way to make sure your edit doesn't get reverted is to cite a source. Hello again, as you can tell I do have an account, though I sadly forgot to sign in when I made the edit, and therefore thought I had to reply with that set of numbers to make it clear who I was. I will be more careful next time. I am going to try and explain my reason for the edit again.

The sentence states “He can usually only say his own name, a garbled line that sounds like "tim-eye", Timmy's name, and Gobbles, the name of his pet turkey.” I think it should be changed to “He can usually only say his own name, a garbled line that sounds like "tim-eye", Jimmy's name, and Gobbles, the name of his pet turkey.” “Jimmy” is referring to Jimmy Vulmer/Swanson and to avoid confusion the sentence should probably state “He can usually only say his own name, a garbled line that sounds like "tim-eye"; Jimmy Vulmer's name, a garbled line that sounds like "jim-eye"; and Gobbles, the name of his pet turkey”. One episode I know this took place was “Up the Down Steroid”.

Does this make sense? I don’t think the paragraph is saying twice that he can say his own name, I think it is moving on to a different fact. If you can change the paragraph to reflect this fact, or if you can tell me that I can without getting another vandalism warning, that would be great! --Soxcanmeow 14:06, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Your edit to Wii

In regards to your edit, the previous version (edited by me) was done to avoid the problem of "the Wii" versus "Wii". At least one user changed the start of the article to "The Wii is..." which could have started a lengthy discussion (or even another edit war). I'm trying to sidestep possible conflict. If you could clarify what made "is the name of" a weasel phrase, it would be helpful. Just64helpin 17:38, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Invalid username

I think you will find that non-latin charaters are deemed inappropriate - as per Wikipedia:Username#Inappropriate usernames. Thanks, Ian Cairns 21:29, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Ian, thanks for the feedback. The username I was commenting on was "Nácíček Ignác" (here). The username contains Extended Latin characters. Discussions have taken place about this subject in the past, see here. So, I agree that such a username isn't appropriate. But just blocking the user isn't the preferred approach : engaging them on their talk page is preferred, see here. I plan to approach the user asking for such a change. --Oscarthecat

I did permanently block the account, for reasons given on his talk page. It is another vandalism/harassment account of somebody with a grudge against certain Wikipedia editors. (Look here and here). - Mike Rosoft 00:07, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: Wii Sales

I was confused about what happened at first, but there was a formatting error on the page causing the wrong reference to display. This is the reference URL that was actually next to the number of units sold. The article says, "400,000 units now in the homes of happy Japanese citizens," and goes on to say, "Along with the 600,000 units sold in the U.S, this puts the Wii over the Million sold mark in just on two weeks." Honorary knights

Sir Paul McCartney is not an honorary knight. He is a knight bachelor which has no post-nominal letters. Steven Spielberg is an example of an honorary knight. (rm "sir", per WP:MOS "Note that honorary knights and dames are not entitled to "Sir" or "Dame", only the post-nominal letters.) - Kittybrewster 14:40, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Cricket stubs

Hello. Good point as things stand. The cricket project has decided to present an article about every first-class season worldwide and about every first-class tour worldwide. Each artefact meets the notability test in its own right and each one does need separate treatment, especially as the potential for growth is considerable. If you look at the reviews of recent tours and seasons you'll see what I mean.

Some members have been focusing on particular seasons or tours, especially where England plays Australia, but there is a need to get the articles in place so that they can be developed in due course. Having the articles in place helps people who have material that covers several seasons, given that most cricket books are written across a broad period of time. We have seen this in the way that numerous English seasons have been expanded from very basic stubs.
