Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, OrlaithHendron. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Smallpdf, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. jcc (tea and biscuits) 12:38, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, if you are being paid by, work for or otherwise have a conflict of interest with Smallpdf, then please declare it now to avoid trouble down the road. jcc (tea and biscuits) 12:39, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

COI[edit]

If you have a conflict of interest, stop editing now, and follow the instructions at WP:DISCLOSE or you may be blocked from further editing. jcc (tea and biscuits) 17:17, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You emailed me, requesting an unblock. If you wish to be unblocked, you need to follow the instructions in WP:GAB. Note that the unblock request you sent me would definitely not be sufficient for an administrator to lift your block, but WP:GAB will help you understand how to craft an acceptable unblock request. --Yamla (talk) 11:21, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Dear Admins, thank you for pointing out my mistake. It was my first post on Wikipedia and I was unaware of the rules at that time. I was trying to impress a potential employer by creating a page for them that I intended on completing if I got the job. I did not know this would be a conflict of interest for wikipedia, because I was quite uneducated about how wikipedia works. I was successful in getting the job at Smallpdf but have not worked for the company since 2017. I have not attempted to edit the page since before then. I am aware now that it is a conflict of interest to have a post written by someone in employment for the company being written about. I understand that I should have declared this to wikipedia before creating the post and that I should have sought advice from the admins about the entry. I wish to be unblocked now so that I can use my wikipedia profile in the correct way. I would never repeat the same mistake. I am also happy to comply with any instructions regarding the offending post and would agree to remove it completely if admins thought that was the best course of action. I did not know about this ban until very recently when i was contacted by someone at Smallpdf who wanted to find out why the post was blocked/unfinished etc For now I think they want to create the post properly and by contacting Wikipedia to inform admins of a potential for conflict of interest. I would like to remove any association with my former employer on my personal account at wikipedia and I therefore ask that my account is unblocked and perhaps even the offending post removed. I await your response and i'm ready to comply with your requests and answer any questions you might have.

Decline reason:

I am sorry, but I am unable to unblock you at this time. I (and I believe other admins too) would want to see something to indicate you are interested in being a general, individual Wikipedia contributor and edit about subjects unrelated to your former employer. I think there is a strong possibility of your being unblocked if there are other things that you want to edit about, but at this time I must decline your request. If you make another, someone else will review it. 331dot (talk) 16:20, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

What do you want to edit about if unblocked? 331dot (talk) 12:41, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

To reply, simply edit this page, as you did to make your unblock request. As you only need one open unblock request, you can just make subsequent comments without any formatting, as I have done here. 331dot (talk) 12:58, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You indicate in your email that you still want to edit about smallpdf and suggest above that you are still in communication with them, but state they are your former employer. Please clarify the nature of your current relationship with smallpdf. Are there any other subjects you want to edit about that are not related to your conflict of interest? 331dot (talk) 13:03, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanks for clarifying.

I have not been an employee of Smallpdf since Feb 2017. But they recently contacted me via linkedin to ask if i'd been contacted by wikipedia about the article i inserted as they want to edit it themselves. For me, since i've breached Wikipedia regulations with that post, i'd like to only edit it to make sure it comes in line with all rules in wikipedia.

Please advise.

At this moment I currently have no other pages i'd like to edit.

They contacted me because the article about them is currently flagged and they want to have the flag removed. Unfortunately I think it's flagged because of me. I'm trying to make things right.

the talk page for the smallpdf page suggest that the COI flag can be removed after the editors (me) contributions have been removed or cleaned up. I just want to do that.
