GNUCash Software[edit]

Hello, I installed the GNUCash software, I’m having difficulty using it… I have to fill in the ‘Transfer’ Tab from a drop down list wherever I enter a sum resulting in the selected ‘Transfer’ item’s numeric font being coloured with a minus sign… Could you please guide me where I should/could insert ‘original sum’? -- (SuperGirlsVibrator (talk) 18:39, 17 March 2015 (UTC))[reply]

It's been awhile since I used GNUCash, so I don't remember all the details. I do know that it uses double-entry accounting, where every transaction has to balance with another transaction: for example, say you have $100 in your Checking account, and you spend $20 to buy supplies. Assume that you track your supplies in an account called Supplies. You would enter -$20 in the Checking account, and $20 in Supplies. This shows where the money to buy supplies came from, and what it was spent on. For every transaction, you must make two entries, and they must total to zero.
Here is a GNUCash tutorial that explains double-entry accounting, and also provides some examples on how to use the program: http://www.gnucash.org/docs/v2.6/C/gnucash-guide/. I hope this helps! OldTimeNESter (talk) 12:25, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think the double entry in this software version is automatic. I'll give you the problem I'm facing, when I open the drop down list of the 'Income' section (unable to open it by itself as it doesn't allow because the 'placeholder' 'check' box is ticked; not a problem as I know how to deselect it) from the first default tab, I double-click on the 'Salary', a new tab opens up with 'Date', 'Num', 'Description', 'Transfer', 'R', 'Debit', 'Credit', 'Balance' columns. If I insert 100 in the 'Debit' column and select a desired 'Transfer' section in its row from its column (must, no way out) e.g., 'Salary' field, automatically inserts the desired amount into the 'Credit' field then creates a new row inserting the same amount in the 'Debit' field, resulting in the 'Balance' field becoming zero. After closing this 'Salary' tab, it takes you to the default tab which has three columns, 'Account Name' (possessing all the drop down lists), 'Description', 'Total' - where it shows '0.00' for 'Income' and its subsection 'Salary'.
Now, if I insert 100 in the 'Debit' field, in the 'Salary' section I have to select a 'Transfer' section in its row from its column, which is a must for some reason. In other words, there is no way I can keep the money in the 'checking account' just by itself...
Again, if I insert 100 in the 'Debit' field in the 'Salary' section and select 'Transfer' section from its row field, from the drop down list, as 'Cash' (which possess no subsections) the 'minus' sign and the 'red' font appears in the default tab, in the 'Cash' sections 'Total' column, I also find the same after double clicking 'Cash' section i.e. the amount in the 'Credit' field and 'minus' sign and the 'red' font in the 'Balance' field. When I go to the 'Supplies' section, I inserted as you stated, the amount in the 'Debit' field, I have to choose the 'Transfer' section in its row from its column (as it is a must) as 'Cash' section, this result in the 'Cash section being '-120', I don't want this '-120', it should be '80'. I need to find a place where I can insert a sum in order to make the 'minus' sign and the 'red' font disappear... In other words the 'Checking account' possessing the '100' all by itself so that I can do what you said i.e., Supplies 20 (which will automatically deduct from the 'checking account' as -20 that's if i insert 'Checking account' in the 'Transfer' columns row field.
Let me know if you can help.
Anyway, thank you for the tutorial information/link. I'll go through it when time comes, right now I'm just using the software for personal use.
Regards.

Sorry, I'm just not that familiar with the software: I only used it for a few months several years ago. Good luck! OldTimeNESter (talk) 15:32, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! Thank you anyway. I appreciate it... Take care friend! -- (SuperGirlsVibrator (talk) 06:18, 25 March 2015 (UTC))[reply]
