Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Obversa! Your additions to Guccio Gucci have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 22:20, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What was removed specifically? Looking at the page now, I don't see any major changes or removals. Obversa (talk) 14:58, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem icon Your edit to Eclipse (horse) has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. All such contributions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, and persistent violators of our copyright policy will be blocked from editing. See Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources for more information. — Diannaa (talk) 01:46, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please explain how the article is copyrighted, and what I need to do to use the article as a citation? Thank you. Obversa (talk) 14:57, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Content was copied from this webpage. You can tell that the webpage is copyright because there's a message at the bottom that reads "Equine Chronicle ® All Rights Reserved. Copyright © 2022". It's okay to use the website as a source of information, but it's not okay to copy their prose. The way you cited your source and formatted your citationb was perfect; that's not the issue. — Diannaa (talk) 18:43, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution[edit]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Thomas de Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk into John de Mowbray, 4th Baron Mowbray. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 22:39, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions. It seems that you may have added public domain content to one or more Wikipedia articles, such as Banker horse. You are welcome to import appropriate public domain content to articles, but in order to meet the Wikipedia guideline on plagiarism, such content must be fully attributed. This requires not only acknowledging the source, but acknowledging that the source is copied. There are several methods to do this described at Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Public-domain sources, including the usage of an attribution template. Please make sure that any public domain content you have already imported is fully attributed. Thank you. — Ninja Diannaa (Talk) 14:43, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for June 30[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Friesian Sporthorse, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Clydesdale. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:03, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm confused. What copyright material did I post? And why is this my "final warning"? Looking back on my talk page, I've only had one other warning for 2023, so saying "this is your final warning" seems excessive. Obversa (talk) 00:41, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Therew was some content copied from https://www.eurodressage.com/index.php/2010/10/22/jubilee-post-war-dressage-hero; the description of the horse. And no, you do not get to make a certain number of copyright violations per year. Final warning stands. — Diannaa (talk) 02:19, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"And no, you do not get to make a certain number of copyright violations per year. Final warning stands." Is a rude response, especially how you phrased it. Not everyone makes edits in bad faith, or with malicious intents, but you're acting here like I'm trying to manipulate you or something here. Can you please be a little nicer to newer users who may not be as familiar with the platform as a Wikipedia veteran or admin is? Obversa (talk) 17:18, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why should this page be deleted when I spent an entire day writing and editing it? I vote against it. There needs to be a good reason for deleting something another user spent lots of hours and hard work on. Obversa (talk) 15:19, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As an update, after seeing the edit and Talk page history, I retract my statement above, and agree with the page deletion. Obversa (talk) 16:44, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Lennox 1st Duke of Richmond[edit]

Why did you remove the original Coat of arms that depicted a inescutcheon with three buckles? Your description says it was before his mother became Duke of Aubigny, but why is that relevant to what his coat of arms should look like now? (Also do you know where I can find a reliable primary or secondary source of what his Coat of Arn looked like?) Wogmath (talk) 09:28, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reaching out to me on this issue. According to the sources I could find in print and online, sources indicated that the escutcheon of pretence with the three buckles for the Duke of Aubigny was added to the coat-of-arms for the grandson of Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond - Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond - as opposed to the 1st Duke. This was also later confirmed with cross-referencing the coat-of-arms of Louise de Kérouaille, Duchess of Portsmouth, which was recorded and displayed as Barry of 6, Argent and Azure, as opposed to Gules, three Buckles Or. Thus, I updated my file to revise and correct the original error.
The revision history on the file itself also has this note: "Removed escutcheon of pretence for the Dukedom of Aubigny, as that did not appear until the 3rd Duke of Lennox." The original coat-of-arms with the escutcheon of pretence will be re-uploaded as a separate file for Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond. Obversa (talk) 16:43, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Aw that stinks, I was making a redesign for the flag of Staten Island as a fun project and wanted to display the Buckles on the flag in reference to Charles Lennox, since his namesake is why it’s called Richmond County, but I guess I will do something else since it wouldn’t be accurate. 2A01:73C0:66E:9F9A:4DFD:C496:68DF:F13 (talk) 17:42, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You may still include the Gules, three Buckles Or if it suits you, as Richmond County, New York is still named for the Duke of Richmond, a title not just held by Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, but also his subsequent male heirs. However, you may want to clarify that the coat of arms for the Dukedom of Aubigny was not added until the Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond was confirmed by King Louis XVI of France and the Kingdom of France to have inherited the Duchy from his great-grandmother, Louise de Kérouaille, Duchess of Portsmouth, who was also Duchess of Aubigny, in 1777. However, as the Province of New York declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence, I would advise against using Gules, three Buckles Or on the flag of Staten Island, as was awarded to the 3rd Duke of Richmond one year after New York declared its independence. However, as the 3rd Duke supported the colonists in the American Revolutionary War, you might include his coat of arms with the explanation that he supported independence. Obversa (talk) 23:21, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, also do you happen to know what the significance of three buckles are as supposed to any other amount? 2A01:73C0:66E:7C54:3839:AC90:ABF6:DE82 (talk) 08:25, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. After consulting with the r/heraldry Discord on Reddit: "Three is one of the common numbers of compact charges to put on arms; I'd assume it was that." According to the 1420 armorial "PETITJEAN DE MARANSANGE - Dictionnaire des familles du Berry", the coat of arms of Gules, three Buckles Or appears to be simplified version of the coat of arms of the earlier Stuart Lords of Aubigny: "Stuart of Aubigny, lords of Darnley in Scotland, Concressault, Aubigny, le Crote, in Berry, Comtes de Beaumont-de-Roger (Eure): Quarterly, 1&4 France with a bordure gules charged with eight Buckles Or; 2&3 a fess chequy of three argent and azure; a bordure engrailed gules. Overall argent a saltire gules cantonned by four quatrefoils of the same." This coat of arms was held by the previous title holder, Charles Stewart, 3rd Duke of Richmond, also 11th Lord of Aubigny (died 1672). Obversa (talk) 23:32, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Note that your 'Keep' !vote at the U.S. Grant horsemanship page is tucked well into your comment so the closer may miss it, best to put the 'Keep' or 'Delete' at or near the front of comments.
