DYK nomination[edit]

Hi, I've nominated an article you worked on, Wasantha Karannagoda, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created on May 18 where you can improve it if you see fit. MeegsC | Talk 01:12, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sri Lanka (Republic date)[edit]

Thank you for adding a Republic date to the Sri Lanka article under Independence. Becoming a Republic is certainly an important part of Independence, and adding it has brought it into line with other country articles. My previous attempt in February to do so proved to be in vain, as it was removed almost immediately by a user without any justification or consensus whatsoever. Hopefully it will stick this time! Fair use rationale for Image:SLN 5.jpg[edit]

Hi Natraven. The article still needs a detailed fair use rationale, saying what that particular image is needed for that specific page. Basically, it needs an explanation (the template {{Non-free use rationale}} helps) for why it should be allowed given all the criteria. Overall, the question is why would it be so difficult for someone to take a free (copyright-wise) picture of the Sri Lankan Navy that Wikipedia needs to use a copyrighted image? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:16, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I fixed the fairuse rationale but try to add the exact source URL. Chrees --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie | tool box 10:11, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your new articles[edit]

Hello. I see that you added two new articles as Ultra fast attack boat and Super Dvora class fast patrol boat. But I see that you copied those articles entirely from http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/naval/super_dvora2/SuperDvora2.html and from the http://www.naval-technology.com/contractors/patrol/colombo/. Vandalism[edit]

Hi,

Some one trying to vandalise the article Anura Bandaranaike also removed the citations from RS. --Vimukthi (talk) 21:47, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From the perspective of categorisation guidelines, I think that the Terrorist attacks and Terrorist incidents categories should not appear on these two biographical articles. Note #9 of Wikipedia:Categorization#Guidelines:

Generally, the relationship between an article and its categories should be definable as "(Article) is (category)".

So, while Algama may be a terrorism victim, he can't really be classified as a terrorist incident or attack.

The above was a comment made by an admin on WT:SLR Watchdogb (talk) 15:02, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nitraven! Probably, we will really have to do something about that Fitz Mackins ... we'll get him with 3RR as a start if he goes on like this ... Talk to you soon, cheers, Krankman (talk) 14:22, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While I certainly think Fitz Mackins actions are out of line, be very careful about violating the three revert rule yourself Nitraven. Meanwhile, I am investigating the matter myself per a request for admin intervention.--Esprit15d • talkcontribs 16:57, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1RR reminder for WP:SLR[edit]

In light of your recent edits to Alfred Duraiappah ([1][2]), 2007 Sri Lankan bus bombs ([3][4]), and C.V. Gunaratne ([5][6]), I would like to remind you to please remain mindful of the 1RR restriction that applies to all articles within the scope of WikiProject Sri Lanka Reconciliation. Although revert restrictions are generally waived across Wikipedia if reverting is uncontroversial, restores a consensus version, or improves an article (see e.g. Wikipedia:Three-revert rule#Exceptions), they do apply in the case of good-faith content disputes. For details, please see Sebastian's clarification of what 1RR means to us. Thanks, Black Falcon (Talk) 19:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:RC main hall.jpg[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:RC main hall.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:27, 7 July 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Geniac (talk) 17:27, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Royal Thomian Stamp.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Royal Thomian Stamp.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Geniac (talk) 17:30, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Rani_Wickremasinghe_Kalutara_Rally.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Garion96 (talk) 15:22, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:SLAF_C130_pic.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:SLAF_C130_pic.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:SLAF_kfir_pic.JPG.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Slac parade pic2.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Slac parade pic2.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:01, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Slafcrest1.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Slafcrest1.gif.

Colombo[edit]

Hi, regarding your edits to the Colombo article, I only restored my edits which you reverted with a very childish style of writing without providing a any proper reason. And most of your claims do not have sources and all most all of the points you highlight are POV pushing and Original Research. For example your claim of Royal College to be the oldest school in Sri Lanka is an Original research. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and it most of the time adheres to academic style of writing as opposed to your newspaper reporting style. You sure dont need to get my permission to edit anything in wikipedia and nor do I to revert false claims and original research that do not have a place in wikipedia. Image source problem with Image:Slac parade pic1.jpg[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Slac parade pic1.jpg.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:50, 28 July 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. hello, i have done some searching regarding above category. i found that Category:Indian terrorists, Category:Iraqi terrorists also nominated for deletion. but Category:Fugitives wanted by Sri Lanka, Category:Fugitives wanted on terrorism charges exists. so one can use last two categories instead of Category:Sri Lankan terrorists. let me know what you think. Thenmuli Rajaratnam[edit]

without being too familiar with the incident, a suicide bomber killing a head of state other than that where the rebellion is, therewith killing unrelated civilians seems to be employing terrorist techniques. There is no military target, no state of war, civilians are harmed, and there is a political message connected to it. As for now, I see no reason to oppose the inclusion of this article in the category (That is, if that category survives deletion) Jasy jatere (talk) 13:23, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:UoC main build.jpg[edit]

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:UoC main build.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 17:50, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:STF passing out.JPG[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:STF passing out.JPG.

Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 17:55, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (File:Sl police crest.jpg)[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Sl police crest.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. ZooFari 21:12, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File copyright problem with File:Crest bcey.gif[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Crest bcey.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. --Geniac (talk) 20:17, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Royal sat4.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Royal sat4.JPG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. File source problem with File:Department of Civil Defence (Sri Lanka).jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Department of Civil Defence (Sri Lanka).jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Western prov flag.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Western prov flag.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 23:28, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering, SLIIT, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

  • It is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. (See section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Wikipedia has standards for the minimum necessary information to be included in short articles; you can see these at Wikipedia:Stub. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.
  • It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 11:25, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka[edit]

Dear Nitraven,

Thank you for your contributions to the Wikimedia Projects. As an editor from Sri Lanka, you are warmly invited to join the official Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka and to subscribe to its mailing list, Wikimedia-LK.

The user group currently includes volunteers from Wikipedia and other projects, from the English, Sinhala, and Tamil speaking communities. It is the Wikimedia-approved platform for editors from Sri Lanka to enable wider collaboration, for both online and offline projects.

With your support, we hope to organize cross-project content improvement drives as part of online projects, as well as organize in-person edit-a-thons, training sessions, photowalks, and other such activities, in the near future. The ultimate goal(s) of these initiatives is to improve the overall coverage and quality of topics relating to Sri Lanka, as well as encourage new editors to join the Wikimedia community, while simultaneously empowering and retaining our existing team of editors.

There are no mandatory obligations for members who choose join the community, other than the usual editing rules for online projects, and the friendly space policy for in-person projects. You may also (or instead) subscribe to the mailing list, where any member could initiate discussions with volunteers across projects, notify members of events and meetings, stay up to date with competitions, organize your own events, and so on.

See you on board, and Happy Editing!

Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017.
